CHAIRMAN’S REPORT//

Right here we go again, we will be resuming our normal program this month and hopefully there are no further “surprises” to come this year.

It’s been like a tale of two cities, there are those of our members for whom the onslaught of Cyclone Gabrielle was almost a non-event just some wind and a few drops of rain and those who were affected themselves or had family who were severely affected. Please continue to keep in touch and continue to offer support to the latter group as needs will change with the passing of time and you never know when a helping hand or a listening ear might be required.

The return of the Cruise ships has been a positive for the region, thanks to Colin Barnes who though flooded himself with both his vehicles and computer getting a soaking, he still managed to get the roster organised and it looks like we will have ships visiting until early April. Last Sunday I accompanied Graham on a wharf visit not sure if it was a good idea as it was very hot and the feet got a bit sore, however it is interesting talking to the passengers and to see how much they enjoy the cars being there, some were fascinated by my fox fur stole especially the children, I got talking to a couple of young Norwegian exchange students based in Brisbane, they had picked up a last minute

OBITUARY –PETER BALL

deal on an inside cabin $800 for a two week cruise, they reckoned they would eat that much worth in two weeks so were well pleased with the deal. Another couple I spoke to belonged to a car club and we got talking about the type of events they hold, he said they have a men’s only Monday coffee morning which is called “Secret Men’s Business” and a monthly outing for women which is for the “Handbrake’s”.

Early in March I attended the VCC Executive meeting which was held at the Christchurch VCC Clubrooms at McLean Island. I have a report later in the MAG and as you will see there are some changes coming, what with upcoming amendments to the Incorporated Societies Act where compliance will require a change to the Club constitution, also several members of the current Management committee are not standing for re-election including the VCC President Diane Quarrie, the new Management Committee will be voted in at the national AGM to be held in August. Don’t forget our Swap Meet to be held on Sunday 7th of May at the Speedway –Steve Donovan is again organising this event so note it in your diaries, past swap meets have been a hit with the Vintage/Classic car community and are also a great fundraiser for the club.

I look forward to catching up with you all as we get back into our usual programme of events.

It was with great sadness that we heard of Peter’s passing in mid-February. Peter and Helen have been stalwart members of this branch since they joined in 2005 upon moving to Hawke’s Bay, first with their Austin and more recently with the Vauxhall. As a team Peter and Helen were valued members who made a major contribution to the branch, Helen organised and ran the Cruise Ship Roster for many years and in recent times Peter had become more active in branch management by joining the committee and taking on the role of Secretary a position he held for four years, this following on from the many years he spent as an Art Deco walk guide and his involvement with the Art Deco Trust. Their enjoyment of things Art Deco was a pleasure to see and a great asset when they organised some of our Winter Art Deco events. We will miss Peter’s cheery face and his ready smile, our thoughts are with Helen and with their family.

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT//

As the Hawke’s Bay Region and more importantly all those affected by Tropical Cyclone Gabriel try to put the events of the last few weeks behind them, I cannot help but reflect on the major issues that have adversely affected our club over the past few years. No Art Deco for three years due to the Covid Pandemic and many Club events cancelled due to this or extreme weather events.

Fertile ground for a pessimist, but the club needs to move on and we need to strive to ensure that the future activities of the club provide exciting and entertaining events for members.

One event coming up on Friday 31 March, probably prior to these notes being published, is the presentation of 50 Year badges (recognition of 50 Years continuous membership) to five of our members by Diane Quarrie, our National President. Those receiving the awards are Digby Young, Alastair Aldridge, Lyn Gentry, Ernest Start and Fred Payne. The award ceremony will be preceded by a light meal and the event has reached maximum

attendance numbers.

Our next Sunday run is on Sunday 16 April and is a jaunt in the country organised by Steve Donovan. We will depart from the Rose and Shamrock car park in Havelock North at 10.00am, driving toward Dannevirke and visiting various car collections on the way.

The May Sunday run will be a “Shed Raid” day where we will catch up on the interesting projects members have going on. I have a few “sheds” in mind but if you know of any exciting project out there, let me know just in case I have not caught up with them.

We also have our Swap meet on the 7th of May which is the only fund-raising project that we have been able to rely on for the last few years. We will be asking for volunteers to assist on the day, so If you can, please make yourself available.

Happy Motoring.

DELEGATS REPORT//

National Executive Meeting March 2023

Delegate’s Report-National Executive Meeting March 2023-MAG

My report notes from the March Executive meeting , I have picked out those items that I think will be of general interest to members, please let me know if you have any comments

1. Revised Incorporated Societies Act- New Constitution for the VCC refer latest Beaded Wheels also as published in the MAG , this is still been debated as to what form the management of the VCC will look like in the future. We have until 2025 to make this decision and it will be discussed again at the August AGM

2. Several Management committee members are retiring including our current VCC President Diane Quarry, the North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie , Tony Bartleet, and Speed Steward Tony Haycock

3. We were given a talk by Tony Johnson CEO of LVVTA ( Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association). They are contracted to NZTA to manage these vehicles, Tony talked to us about definitions of Modified Production, Scratch Built Vehicles etc. Most interesting point was that they have now been contracted by NZTA to manage the Repair Certification of Vehicles, and will train specialist certifiers to deal with pre1990 Cars.

4. From the Registrar Neil Beckenham –The VIC’s Technical Manual is been updated this will be added to the Branch manual There will be a new online VIC System, our branch signatories who are Richard Anderson and Wayne Richards will receive updated training on what is required when doing the VIC checks

5. There was a Session from Garry Jackson regarding the NZ Federation of Motoring survey of the value to the economy of Historic and Classic motoring. A similar survey was done in the UK several years ago and it was worth 25 billion pounds annually, 18 b of which was commercial and business. The NZ survey is also to include motorhomes/caravans etc which the UK survey didn’t.

6. Annual vehicle warrants? is still working it’s way up through the system at NZTA, trying to get it through under existing legislation as a change in legislation would take ages. These 12 month Warranties would be for vehicles over 40 years old as per the reduced vehicle registration and they will have to have a VIC,

7. Branch Name Change to include the word “Classic” essentially there is nothing in the VCC Constitution that prevents individual branches of the VCC making their own decision as to what they are called.

8. Membership Awards how these are to be awarded and by who. Good debate, there was a general opinion that as per the status quo the VCC president or their delegate should present the 50 year awards.

12

VERO RALLY 2026/2027

Last year the Hawke’s Bay Branch submitted a Registration of Interest to host the next Vero Rally to be held in 2026 or 2027. Three VCC branches submitted a ROI they were Waikato, Nelson and ourselves.

Prior to making a selection The VCC Management Committee wish to travel to each branch to meet with a formative committee, and also to assess what each branch has to offer. I have suggested the National committee visit Hawke’s Bay in early May and so am seeking volunteers to join our formative Committee

If you are interested in being part of this committee please contact me on 027 464 7314 or at humber@xtra.co.nz

VISIT IN LATE JANUARY TO THE HOOD AERODROME//

A visit to Hood Aerodrome. Members travelled in convoy to the practice for the airshow. We stopped for coffee enroute and met up with the Manawatu branch members who had planned an “off the main road route “ through the back of Masterton to Hood. We were split into three groups of about 10 and taken on a guided tour of the vintage aircraft. Then into the hangers to more planes.

Then it was time for lunch which most had prepacked. An excellent Café also had Sandwiches, rolls and cakes etc.

Staffed by volunteers in the Cafe and ground support it was a great day out.

The airshow was fantastic with dog fighting in slow motion from a range of different single, Bi and Tri winged craft

The forecast was looking like a bit of a gamble when we left The Bay, but turned out bright n sunny and very warm.

We returned home at a leisurely pace.

FEBRUARY MID-WEEK ACTIVITIES//

MIDWEEK RUN TO AN INLAND RAILWAY SLEEPER STATION:

10am Wednesday and Barry starts the brief for our run today, and instructions are handed out to all navigators then it’s time to head out the clubroom gates and turn left (Right would have seen us end up with a U turn as Brookfield bridge was closed for repairs).{ Approx 16 vehicles set off}

Our travels took us up to Awatota via Waitangi Rd to travel on SH51, on through Fardon to take Pakowahi Rd and head south to take a left into Te Ara Kahikatea to travel to re-join SH51 with a left onto St Georges Rd, to take that tricky little cross over jink onto Mt Erin Rd.

Then we travelled through the fruit bowl area of South West Hastings enjoying the views and noting just how green the country side for this time of the year.

Our final destination to catch our inland sleeper carriage was Norton Rd, to the property of Trish and Colin Beswick and “NORTON

ROAD STATION”

We were introduced to Trish and Colin (who is a recently retired Fireman from Hastings).

If you were a follower of the TV programme “Moving Houses” hosted by Clarke Gayford, well this is the Railway carriage – which is 18 meters long and weighed 48 Tonne when loaded onto the removal transporter - the seats alone weighed over a tonne and were all in excellent condition. (They have plenty of spares if anyone was interested in some)

Rails for the carriage to be located on were sourced here in Hawke’s Bay in 6 meter sections.

16

The carriage has a good history being first used in Queensland in Brisbane and later in NSW on the zig zag rail network, before being purchased for the Auckland commuter network.

The carriage was parked up at Taumarunui along with many others which were taken out of service.

Colin gave a full run down on the whole purchase and transport to Hastings plus the upgrades they are doing to turn it into a home stay, and the work completed to date is a credit to them, Trish has done most of interior painting and fit out and when finished will be a pleasure to stay in.

This was a real pleasure to visit and even shelter out of the rain shower that came through.

They hope to have the whole station homestay open within the next 6 months, but like all things today will depend on local council sign off.

Leaving “NORTON ROAD STATION” we headed out through Havelock North to TeMata Rd, to cross Te Mata Mangateretere Rd onto River Rd, to the property of Morton Osborn who has lived on the property since the 1980’s. He gave us a talk about his ownership and the auction process when he brought the property {a certain well known HB business man was the last bidder against Morton, and he kept bidding until he thought the price was about right and then pulled out!! He later told Morton he only kept bidding to keep the local land values up as this chap has a large holding in the area!!!!}

Morton has on the site the old Presbyterian Church from Clive and he has used as a wine sales outlet in the past and now it gets the occasional use for family events and weddings etc.

17

This was our Lunch stop which was most enjoyable until the rain showers arrived.

For those car restorer’s there are 2 Triumph Mayflower vehicles parked up just waiting for an enthusiast to take on (if he would sell them?)

An excellent Mid-week run and well organised by Barry and Lyndsay.

WANTED//

WANTED: OLDER VEHICLE. Ideally we want a vehicle that is user friendly i e that will cruise at 95 – 100 kph as we will be using it for trips away and on daily trips out. We do not want a ‘show queen’ but something clean and tidy. Ideally it will be a coupe. It needs to be Registered and WOF. I am 73 and are past restoring vehicles but just want to drive and enjoy. I’m thinking a 1934 Chrysler, Dodge, Desoto, Plymouth coupe would be good. Possibly a Model A Ford but it would need to have period speed equipment and overdrive to attain the travel speed we need. 1932 33 34 Fords and Chevys are probably more than we want to spend. I’m aware of a ’34 Plymouth Roadster for sale on trade me which would be good but it’s a Roadster and we are both past being baked in the sun or getting wet and cold. Contact dave Goodman Ph: 027 4427325.

WANTED: 1 PINION SEAL FOR 1946 DODGE. Outside diameter 3 9/64” or 3 3/16”, Inside diameter 1 7/8”, Width ½” or 9/16”. Please phone Lance on 027 464 2018.

WANTED: Road wheel for Standard Vanguard car. Early to mid 1950s. Geoff Johnston 879 9700 or 0273421 696.
