As we inch towards Spring it is great to see the daylight hours slowly increasing, the spring flowers coming into bloom and as I look out my window the lambs are enjoying some sunshine.
Winter Deco- this went really well, it was a great weekend my report is elsewhere in the MAG
Rally for Cancer-The big day is Sunday the 20th of August so come along and join us on the day, refer elsewhere in the MAG for details, to allow more people to support this cause we will also be using our August Mix and Mingle as a fundraiser for this event.
Regarding the 2026 Vero Festival of Motoring, as I sit down to write this report we still have had no word about National office saying which branch has been awarded the hosting rights. So fingers crossed. The public announcement will be made at the next AGM and we were told that the successful branch would be asked to make a presentation, so Larry Morgan who has agreed to be our Rally Director should Hawke’s Bay be selected is sitting poised to book his flights at a moment’s notice.
The VCC National AGM is to be held in Nelson on the 11>13th of August. I will be attending this as branch delegate, so will be able to give you feedback in the next issue if the MAG.
It will be interesting times with Diane Quarrie finishing her term as National President after eight years in the role, Diane will be replaced by George Kear who hails
from Christchurch and who we had the opportunity to meet when he was here at our Branch AGM. Kaaren Symlie is also finishing her term as North Island Club Captain and she will be replaced by Glyn Clements who is well known to this branch.
VCC Annual Report- This was recently posted out to all members. Please remember to return the ballot paper regarding the Clubs name, this voting paper was attached to the back of the report.
Keep an eye out for upcoming events been run by our neighbouring VCC branches’ there are a few coming up which we will let you know about. Graham and I recently participated in the R’oil Can rally which is organised by the Waitemata Branch it is essentially for top down cars but they span the decades. We took the 29 Chev and were joined by other VCC members Pat Bren and Mike Stuart in their 1926 Alvis also Tony Prebensen and Tom Davey in Tony’s Model A. On the actual rally day we covered 300km’s and in total about 1400kms over the 4 days we were away it was quite a mission.
Talking about upcoming events. The club is making plans to hold a vehicle Show and Shine at the Clubrooms and surrounding park to which all local car clubs will be invited. We are thinking of holding it in mid-October and are looking to partner with another service organisation such as Rotary who would organise the Public aspects of the event.
I look forward to catching up with you all at our various upcoming events.
Your Club needs someone to fill the role of Club Captain

August Mid-Week Run.
Wednesday August 2nd let’s do something a little different and with the rather cold weather we are experiencing at the moment a nice warm place to finish our run will be welcome.
The Run will commence as per usual gathering at the club rooms by 10am.
An interesting but fairly short drive will follow with the finish back at the club rooms for lunch and a movie, Buena Vista Social Club, the movie as a result of this guy. In the late 1990s Cooder played a significant role in the increased appreciation of traditional Cuban music, due to his collaboration as producer of the Buena Vista Social Club (1997) recording, which became a worldwide hit and revived the careers of some of the greatest surviving exponents of 20th century Cuban music.
“When they had finished recording, Ry Cooder knew that he had been privileged to be part of a unique musical experience. “This is the best thing I was ever involved in,” he said prior to Buena Vista’s release in June 1997. “It’s the peak, a music that takes care of you and nurtures you. I felt that I had trained all my life for this experience and it was a blessed thing.”
In Cuba, Ry noted, he had found the kind of deeply rooted musical context that he had been searching for all his life. “These are the greatest musicians alive on the planet today,” he enthused. “In my experience Cuban musicians are unique. The organisation of the musical group is perfectly understood. There is no ego,no jockeying for position so they have evolved the perfect ensemble concept.” Sadly, several of the group’s aging stars, including Compay Segundo, Rubén González, Ibrahim Ferrer, Cachaíto López, Puntillita Licea and Angá Diaz are no longer with us. But the timeless, magical music that created the Buena Vista legend lives on.
This movie will allow us to chat over lunch while the rhythms of Cuban music might just make your hips wiggle and toes to tap a little. See you on the 2nd, bring your lunch, Cubans love pulled pork sandwiches, and of course tea coffee or perhaps another beverage to warm your inner spirit.
adios el amigo’s
A big Thank You to all the brave and hardy souls who ventured out on a wet and chilly day to support this event.
Particularly Tom and Helen White for bringing the Model T which was the standout car in the display and they came dressed in period.
Well done all for flying the VCC flag at this event
I am very pleased with how the weekend went, and wasn’t it great to be featured on the TVNZ news on the Sunday night. I may be slightly biased but again I think the cars were the star of the show. We had about 40 vehicles entered for the parade and they really set the tone for that event so thanks to all those entrants both locals and visitors from other VCC branches who no doubt spent hours washing and polishing their vehicles as they certainly gleamed on the day, for some reason Graham had an obsession with keeping the wheels clean no mean feat with the state of our local roads. With the clearing weather we made a rash decision and took the hood down thank goodness the rain stayed away although there was certainly a Winter chill in the air, usually we would blow our horn for the kids lining the route but for some reason our horn currently sounds more like a strangled cat than a healthy OOgah despite a bit of tinkering it still sounds rather sick.
Thanks to those members who turned up and did car rides for the public from outside the information centre which was also a success, even though we ask for a donation it’s as much about showcasing the club talking to everyone and giving people of all ages an opportunity to go for a ride in an older car.
The rest of the weekend’s events also went well, the Saturday night dinner saw the Clubrooms decorated in style, it was a fun and entertaining evening a lot of thanks goes to our MC for the evening Ian Elmsly who definitely isn’t a paid up member of the PC brigade and also to Sandra Marsh and her group of singers.
Sunday Morning tea meant an earlier start than a lot of us would have liked, but that set us up for a couple of shed visits, quite different in content which just shows the wide and varied interests of the motoring fraternity.

First of all a big thank you to Ross Culver, who dropped some tools of which we had some success in selling. We found this attached photo in the library & thought people may be interested in the history of it.
The photo was taken in 1929 on Railway Road in Hastings, The officer on the left in Jim Dunnett, a traffic officer employed by the Hasting Borough Council, and on the right is a policeman Bill Craigie, he retired from the police as the assistant commissioner but die later that year in 1965. Both these men are riding (Phenin & Moore Panthers 600cc Motor Cycles) they were manufactured in England in 1928 and were near new when this photo was taken, they had 4 speeds & were capable of 75mph. Apparently Bills motor cycle was owned by him personally, and Jim’s was owned by the Hastings Borough Council. Bills head wear is known as a (Shako), and was worn by NZ police in the years from 1927 to 1929. If being chased by Jim people recalled that the best means of avoiding him when chased was to head to a shingle or gravel road, these bike were unsuitable for these types of conditions.
Until next time.
For any enquiries phone Brian Taylor on 027 443 6009 or John Durry 022 676 9401 on Tuesday mornings between 9am & 11am on 06 835 1483.

Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O'Leary's apartment when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table.
Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue playing standing up.
Michael O'Connor looks around and asks, 'Oh, me boys, someone got's to tell Paddy's wife. Who will it be?'
They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse.
'Discreet??? I'm the most discreet Irishmen you'll ever meet.
Discretion is me middle name. Leave it to me.'
Gallagher goes over to Murphy's house and knocks on the door.
Mrs. Murphy answers, and asks what he wants.
Gallagher declares, 'Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home.'
'Tell that useless bastard of a man to drop dead!', says Murphy's wife..
'I'll go tell him.' says Gallagher.
Into a Belfast pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he'd just been run over by a train.
His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut, and bruised, and he's walking with a limp.
'What happened to you?' asks Sean, the bartender.
'Micheal O'Connor and me had a fight,' says Paddy.
'That little O'Connor,' says Sean,
'He couldn't do that to you, he must have had something in his hand.'
'That he did,' says Paddy, 'a shovel is what he had, and a terrible lickin' he gave me with it.'
'Well,' says Sean, 'you should have defended yourself. Didn't you have something in your hand?'
That I did,' said Paddy, 'Mrs. O'Connor's breast, and a thing of beauty it was; but useless in a fight.'
An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road.
A cop pulls him over. 'So,' says the cop to the driver, 'where have ya been?'
'Why, I've been to the pub of course,' slurs the drunk.
'Well,' says the cop, 'it looks like you've had quite a few to drink this evening.'
'I did all right,' the drunk says with a smile.
'Did you know,' says the cop, standing straight, and folding his arms across his chest, 'that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?'
'Oh, thank heavens,' sighs the drunk. 'for a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf..'
A drunk staggers into a Catholic Church, enters a confessional booth, sits down, but says nothing.
The Priest coughs a few times to get his attention, but the drunk continues to sit there.
Finally, the Priest pounds three times on the wall.
The drunk mumbles, 'Ain't no use knockin, there's no paper on this side either.
