If the weather permits there is still some tree trimming to be finished off. If you can please bring along saws and chainsaws, and of course, trailers for free firewood. And if you are unable to help with the trees, there will always be some gardening that needs attention.

A volunteer is also sought to run the vacuum cleaner over the Members’ Room floor - please contact Cliff if you can help.

If the weather is wet, work will continue indoors on recovering the chairs. Please bring a staple gun, staples and screwdrivers so that we can progress with that task. And naturally, there will be the morning tea break which allows time for some convivial socialising.

An Invitation to join in the fun at Cross Hills Gardens in Kimbolton

Hello everyone,

Having just realised it’s the 19th of the month again and nearly 11pm I better get this report sorted after Becky and I have spent the last couple of hours finishing off the entry forms for the Highland Fling for next year. Everything for this event is falling into place quite nicely but one thing I do require for the weekend is a decent backup 4x4 that would be capable of pulling a dead vintage car out of grass farm tracks. If anyone has one and could help out on the 27th of April please contact me.

With Glyn in the UK, Cliff had the Vintage Rally fully under control on the 9th of September with a beautiful blue sky day. We started off from Memorial Park heading over Pahiatua track to take in the great roads the Tararua has to offer and a very pleasant lunch at the Eketahuna pub followed by more great roads on the way back to the Club Rooms for prize giving and a BBQ dinner. A fantastic day was had by all those who attended. It would have been nice to have seen a few more entries from our local members!!!!!

The combined Central Hawkes Bay Manawatu Dinner and Quiz night was on the 20th. Hopefully I get home in time to get some photos to Bryan for this issue. The 1st CHB Vintage Rally is on the 23rd. Dad and I are heading over to Waipukurau to support this event as they are great supporters of our events. Next up is the major event of the year our annual swapmeet, this is always a great event and a big thanks to John Ireland and all the helpers for making this event a must do for people from all over the country.

Our now annual Motorcycle rally is on the 14/15th of October and no doubt Glyn has another great event planned with riders from far and wide coming to this event. October Club Night, please bring something interesting along out of your shed for a show and tell night. It doesn't have to be motoring related and if last year’s was anything to go by it will be an entertaining night.

Safe Travels

OUR CLUB CAPTAIN AND SECRETARY’S TRAVELS

This month, no Club Captain’s Corner or Secretary’s Scribbles, but a combined effort from our Club Captain and Secretary who have been kind enough to share with us some photographs from their travels on the Isle of Man and other parts of the UK.

A visit to Thornton le Dale, Pickering.

If you have watched the TV series ‘Bangers and Cash’ you will know who we are talking about when we say Mathewsons Classic Cars and Auctions.

So you can guess who needed to go there, apparently for more research!

No vehicles purchased, just some souvenirs and the tee shirt!.

‘Pensioner Day Out’ on the TT Circuit, and around most of the island, covering 235 miles for the day. Notice our Club Captain grinning from ear to ear - and he apparently wore a mini video camera so that he can prove he had ridden the circuit, and will probably share it with all his mates when he returns to New Zealand.

At Beaulieu Motor Museum, 2023 International Auto Jumble.

Vehicles Glyn wanted to purchase in the Bonham’s Auction!

Unfortunately no room left in the stable at home!.

Hello everyone

Thank you to those who provided feedback on our proposal to email The Tourer. There was a wide range of responses varying from complete agreement to agreement with some reservations to disagreement.

The majority were in agreement. To cover off some of the queries and suggestions sent through -

Look for a cheaper printer

▪ We have obtained quotes from a number of printers.

▪ All were dearer than current provider, and also, postage is a significant portion of the cost which no printer can change.

Storing The Tourer on a Web Site

▪ There was a suggestion to store The Tourer on a web site.

▪ We already do this - the latest issue of the Tourer is available on the VCC websitehttps://vcc.org.nz/news-from-our-branches/ . You can see the branch newsletters from all branches there. Downside is that only the latest issue is available.

▪ A web site for Manawatu VCC is a potential option but there will be a cost. While this is an option, it is something that the committee would need to consider regarding what would be on the site, etc.

▪ The PDF files could be saved to online storage like Google or Microsoft One Drive. This is potentially free. This option will be investigated.

▪ In all the above options, you would still require a computer to access.

Printing less copies and sharing them

▪ We still have the cost of printing and posting to initial people. Those people would incur any cost of getting the Tourer to the next person on the list. And of course the Tourer could be months old before the last person gets it.

Based on the feedback, the committee have resolved to move to emailing the Tourer to all members who have an email address held by National Office. The options for those who do not have an email address are:

1) Update their details to include an email address by contacting the club secretary. It does not necessarily have to be their email address, it could be a friend or family member.

2) Picking up a printed copy from the club rooms. These will be available on the first Wednesday of each month between 9.30 am and 12 noon. The working bee is being moved to the first weekend of each month so that someone will be there. If you want a printed copy, please advise the secretary so that we have enough printed.

3) Do not receive a Tourer.

ENGLAND’S BEST DEAD CAR COMPANIES

Talbot

Talbot was an early 20th century Anglo-French enterprise that would end up being paired with and owned by a myriad of marques. It went to sleep in 1960 before its 1978/9 revival by Peugeot on a motley assortment of one-time Chrysler UK and Simca models. The name was finally snuffed out in 1992 - the name last being used on a van.

The Innisfail Section of the Northern Tour.

The first day of the Innisfail section began with heavy rain which resulted in most participants choosing to set off in their moderns. The day started with a drive south to Paronella Park and Gardens. These are not just ordinary gardens. There are waterfalls, a hydro-electric system, tennis courts, bridges and a tunnel all set amongst an amazing range of over 7000 tropical plants and trees which have grown into a stunning rainforest. Then it was out to the coast followed by a stop at the Sugar Heritage Centre which provided a good display on the history of the sugar industry in the area.

Day 2 in Innisfail started late - delayed a little because of wet weather. But when the sun appeared the tour headed into banana plantations and cane fields. Light rain started as the tour entered the rain forest, but it wasn’t heavy enough to upset plans and the group made it to lunch at an old pub which was set among the cane fields.

The last day in Innisfail (and of the Northern Tour) started with good weather which was just as well since the veteran vehicles were out on display for the public to appreciate. Then it was off to the Wet Tropics Agricultural Centre at South Johnstone for morning tea and a talk from some of the staff. The rally ended with a final dinner - a very delicious dinner in fact, followed by tales, yarns and stories.

DAFFODIL DAY FUNDRAISER AND RUN

Many thanks to all club members who attended the daffodil car show and run.

We woke about 7am to rain and despair. So, shower, breakfast, packed the car and off to Manchester Square. Even before we had started to set up we had cars arriving. The car park was getting quite full and still they kept coming and still no rain. In the end we had approximately 70 plus cars on display and a wonderful range on display.

Then the little Morris arrives along with the crew from Seven Sharp. They both drew a lot of attention. About 1pm the cars started to leave and some participated in a short run we had arranged and still no rain.

When all donations were counted, we had collected just over $1,100 so well done team. A special thanks to Ken for all his help. At the end of the auction for the Morris it was sold for $29,600 to a lady from Tauranga. Hope she enjoys her motoring.

Cheers

MANAWATU VINTAGE RALLY REPORT - ROB EASON

On a picturesque and clear spring morning on Saturday 9th of September 2023, car enthusiasts gathered at Memorial Park for the Manawatu Vintage Car Rally. This event brought together 16 vintage cars and 34 people eager to embark on a memorable journey through scenic routes. The rally didn’t include timed sections or questions; instead, participants were challenged to collect letters hidden along the route.

9.30am: With instructions from Cliff, the first car set off from Memorial Park, marking the official start of the rally. The rally route took participants through the city before heading over the Pahiatua Track, down the hill into Ballance Valley, progressing toward Woodville. A right turn onto Troup Road led them south toward Masterton. The journey continued along Bluff Rd, running south along the east side of SH2.

An interesting incident occurred when Rodger Broadbent, driving his Lancia, attempted to avoid a gravel road. He encountered a mob of cattle, resulting in a somewhat messy situation on the road.

The rally proceeded to Eketahuna, where participants convened at a local Pub. Everyone was punctual for a fabulous buffet lunch, enjoyed by all. Some also took the opportunity to refuel at the GAS station, which was greatly appreciated by the community.

By 2pm, the rally was back on the road, following the west side of SH2 northward. Although the route was straightforward, Cliff decided to take a shortcut, inadvertently ending up on a gravel road. This detour allowed him to demonstrate his off-road skills, albeit leaving his passenger with white knuckles. However, the trusty Model A handled the terrain with ease. The rally concluded back at the car club, where participants gathered to enjoy a BBQ dinner and the prize-giving ceremony.

Acknowledgments:

The success of the Manawatu Vintage Car Rally on September 9th 2023, was made possible through the diligent efforts of Cliff, the organiser. Participants had a fantastic day exploring scenic routes, overcoming unexpected challenges, and enjoying great company. The rally showcased the enduring charm and resilience of vintage cars and their owners.

A beautiful clear sunny day start from Taranaki Rally HQ at the Top 10 Holiday Park in New Plymouth with 41 entrants riding vehicles ranging from 1924 Harley Davidson FE, with no front brake, to a 1982 Honda XL 250 and a cross section of bikes in between.

The Straight Ahead rule applied and No Exit roads were to be ignored, so a few of us lost time back tracking to get back on course. The route was all on predominantly rural tar seal with a section requiring negotiation of pot holes. The scariest part was roads running along ridges with step rises & falls where you couldn’t see what was coming over the next brow of the road, or which direction it followed on the other side as there were no power poles to even indicate potential direction until you got to the crest.

The rally Route had us crossing Stratford to Whangamomona - Taumaranui closed railway track that still has compulsory stop signs at each of the eleven crossings. Morning tea and Lunch stop at Ratapiko Hall meant that we did a number 8 style circuit with Mt Egmont only visible through the low cloud when we then had a chilly side wind.

After lunch stop the roads had good visibility and were flowing. Good food and chin wags throughout the weekend with riders coming from Whangarei to Thames to Wellington and all places in between.

A well planned event by the Taranaki team and for me no running out of fuel this time with the CZ doing 56 mpg. Overall winner was Robert Young on his 1948 Ariel KH, our Errol Gray on his Norton Commando 8th place and yours truly in 39th out of 41 entrants.

Brands represented were: Ambassador, AJS, Ariel, BSA, CZ, Douglas, Harley Davidson, Honda, Matchless, Morgan, Moto Guzzi, Norton, Scott, Suzuki, Triumph, Yamaha.

Subject: Subscription Invoices

Dear Branch Secretaries

The invoice renewals for the subscription year 1 November 2023 - 31 October 2024 have now been emailed to all members with an email address and posted to the remainder of our members.

For those members who have had the invoices emailed to them, please remind them to check their spam/folder as our National Office bulk emails tend to end up there. If members add our bulk email address nationaloffice@vccnz.nz <mailto:nationaloffice@vccnz.nz> to their safe addresses list, then this should prevent this occurring again in the future.

I have had a number of invoice emails bounce back as undeliverable, and I am steadily working my way through them. We have had some email clients reject our emails as they suspect them as spam due to recent tightening of their spam filters. For those members I am resending the invoice from my admin@vcc.org.nz <mailto:admin@vcc.org.nz> email address and they seem to be getting through. Where the invoice bounces back us undeliverable due to the email address not existing etc, then the invoice is being printed and posted.

Kind regards,

The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Incorporated

The Historic Vehicle Authority of New Zealand
