Thereisa$10cashperheaddoorchargetogetinbutwortheverycenttovisitoneof thebestprivatemotorcyclecollectionsintheNorthIsland.

ADodgeambulancewascalledtothesceneofthisaccident,whichinvolveda1060FordGalaxie four-doorsedan.Thefrontofthecariscompletelywrecked,requiringaratherlargetowtruckfor haulingitaway.
Itlookslikesomeonetriedtorestylethe1962PlymouthValiantbyrollingitend-over-endseveral times.TheaccidentoccurrednearOhioonJuly19th,1962.

HostLakeSpeedJr.setouttoshowwhetheroldoil,whenshaken,couldbebrought backtoausablestate.Hedugoutacoupleofoldsealedoilcontainers - oneina plasticcontainerandanotherinametalcan - toseewhetheragoodshakecouldbring thembacktolife.
Thelabresultsaren'tsurprising. Whetherwe'retalkingaboutthe20-year-oldValvoline oilorthe50-year-oldMobil1,bothshowedsignificantsignsofoxidation,shakenornot. Essentially,thatmeanstheoilitself,aswellasthesetofadditivesputintotheoilwhen itwasnew - Zinc,Phosphorus,Sulphur,etc. - havechemicallydegradedtothepoint wheretheycannolongerlubricateanenginesufficiently.
TheplasticbottleofValvolinewastheworstofthetwo.Itshowedsignsofwater presentintheoil,gatheredoverthecourseoftwodecadessimplythroughtheheating andcoolingofthecontainer.Soweadviseagainstusingthatoldbottleofoilinyour garage,evenifit'sforatop-off.
PartssupplierslikeAutozoneandCarParts.comsaymostmotoroilshaveashelflifeof aboutfiveyears.Afterthat,oxidationbeginstooccur,degradingthequalityofthe lubricant.

THE 1924 MORRIS COWLEY
Sourcedfrom‘AnEraofMotoring–ThevehiclesofaPastAge’. BasedonthecollectionattheNationalMotorMuseum,Beaulieu.
IfstrugglingstudentsdroveAustinSevensinthe1930s,lesswell-to-dofamilymen optedforsecond-handMorrisCowleys. Thisexamplebelongedtoaladyownerin Wimborne,andwhenthechassiscrackedher remedywassimple;sheboughtapairofscrap Cowleysfor£5apiece,andcannibalisedthe threeintoonegoodcar.
Technicallythemodelwasasorthodoxasthe Rolls-Roycehadbeenin1906.Theaverage Britishfamilycarof1924wasratedat12 horsepower,andhadafour-cylinderside-valve engine,magnetoignition,three-speedunit gearbox,gravityfeed,spiralbevelfinaldrive, AMorrisCowleyonDartmoor,Devonin1922 andbrakesontherearwheelsonly;allofthesefeatureswerefoundontheMorris. Itsbrakeswerepronetosqueal,allegedlybecauseMr.Morrislikedpeopletorecognise thesoundofhiscars,butthewet-plateclutchwasuncommonlysweetinaction, renderingtheCowleyeasytodrive.Startingbysilentdynamotorwasanother unexpectedrefinement. Herewassoundrather thaninspiredengineering. WilliamMorriswas, howeverasalesmanas wellasamechanic. Startingwithan assembledproduct-the originalCowleyof1915 wasatleast80percent American,withits Continentalengine, DetroitGeartransmission, andTimkenaxles-he madehisfortuneby loweringpricesinaslumpwhileothersraisedtheirs.Whatretailedfor£465in1921 couldbeboughtfor£225in1924,and£160by1926. Morrisusedhisprofitstoacquirehiscompetentsuppliers.AftertheWarHotchkissof CoventryhadreplacedContinentalashissourceofengines,transmissionscamefrom Wrigley,bodiesfromHollickandPratt,andradiatorsfromOsbertonofOxford.By 1924allweredivisionsoftheMorrisempire,andin1926theS.U.carburettorfirmwas added.Moreimportant,hebackedasoundproductbyanationwidedealernetwork; nowonderhewasabletosell55,000carsin1925.

ThiswasthelastyearoftheBullnoseradiator,andthoughasimplifiedCowleycouldbe boughtfor£142in1927,thegloryhaddeparted.TheCowleysurvivedasanameuntil 1934,butthedepressiontookaheavytollofsalesintheoncepopular12horsepower class,anditwasnotuntil1935thatMorrisonceagainhadabest-sellertomatch Austin'sSevenandTen.
