OurbranchhasbeenapproachedbythePNHospice tohelpoutwiththeirtreeofremembranceatthe entrancetoFarmersinthePlazainPalmerston North.

Thisisbeingheldfromthe1stDecemberthroughto the24thDecemberduringthePlaza'sopeninghours.

Every Christmas, outside the Farmers Department Store in the Plaza, the Arohanui HospiceTreeofRemembranceisadornedwithheartfeltmessages.Thesehavebeen leftbymembersofourcommunitytohonourtheirlovedoneswhohavepassedawayin exchangeforachosendonationtoArohanuiHospice.AfterChristmas,thesemessages areblessed,burned,andtheashesarescatteredinArohanuiHospice'sgarden.

ArohanuiHospiceisacharityorganisationdedicatedtoprovidingspecialistpalliative caretoover1100patientseachyearacrossManawatu,Rangitikei,Tararua, Horowhenua,andOtaki.Ourservicesareonlymadepossiblethroughthegenerous supportofourcommunity,whohelpcoverourfundingshortfall,whichforthisfinancial yearisjustover$4million.

ForOurManawatuChildCancerFoundationChristmasEventthisyearinlate NovemberourThemeisWinterWonderland.TogetherwiththeRongotea LionswearecreatingaSantaCave,haveplannedafantasticmeal-andeven afewgiftstoo.Thedaygenerallyconsistsofactivities,foodandSantafor upwardsof60families(150+people)chatting,connectingandallcoming togetherduetotheirchildrenbeingdiagnosedwithsomeformofChild Cancer.

Wouldanyofyourmembersperhapsliketoparticipateinthefestivitiesfor severalhoursontheday?TheeventthisyearwillbeattheTeKawau RecreationCentreinRongotea,Sunday24thNovember10.30am-1pm.

Hieveryone,ithasbeenaverywetmonththismonth.Ihope youarenotunderwaterareyourplace.

ItwasagoodturnoutfortheSundayrunatthebeginningof themonth.Themotorcyclecollectionwasverylargeandthere werealotofdifferentmakesofbikesIhadnotheardof.

Iwouldliketothankthemembersthathavebeenturningup everyworkingbee.Iwassoproudofhowtheclubrooms lookedforthedaffodilday.Wehadalotofthepublicturnup forafternoontea.Therewasalotofinterestinclubrooms.Somedidn’tevenknow thatwehadclubroomsthere.

AtleastwehadgreatweatherforDaffodildayinFeilding.Therewerearound160 cars,motorbikesandevenacaravan.Wehavehadalotofinterestintheclubsince thatdaywithnewmembers.AbigthankyoutoAnnetteforallthehardworkin organizingtheDaffodilDay.

IwasintroducedtosomeoneonDaffodilDaythatwaslookingforacartobuy.So,the nextweekendmycarwassoldtosomeoneinthedistrict.Itwillbegreattoseeit aroundontheroadagain.

ItwasverysadthatwelostthebrokenpistontrophytoCentralHawkesBaybranchon Wednesdaynight.Thequestionswerequitehardthisyear.Ihaveputmyhandupfor nextyeartodothequiz.

Theladiesfellowshipisgoinggreat.Wehadanawesometimeattheposhnosh morningtea.Wewouldloveformoreladiestocomealongandjoininwithus.

WinterWon’tLetGo-It’sLikeThatGuestWhoWon’tLeave… Youknowthatfeelingwhenaparty’sover,thesnacksaregone, andeveryone’sleft,butthere’sthatoneguestwhojustwon’t takethehint?That’sWinterrightnow.We’vepolitelyhintedit’s timetogo.Springiswaitingoutside,tappingitsfoot,butWinter isstillsittingonourcouch,eatingthelastofthechipsand showingnosignofmoving.Sure,wewerehappytoseeWinter atfirst.Thesnowwaspretty,thecosyjumperswerefun,and hotchocolatebecameitsownfoodgroup.Butnow,we’reready Forsunshine,flowers,andtheabilitytogooutsidewithoutthreelayersofclothing. Yet,Winterislike,“Nope,IthinkI’llstayalittlelonger.Howaboutonemorebadweather

bombforoldtime'ssake?”Atthispoint,we’vetriedeverythingshortofkickingitoutthe door.Butmaybethere’sasilverlining-atleastit’sagoodexcusetostayinside,bingewatchyourfavouriteseries,andavoidtheexerciseforafewmoreweeks.So,here’sto Winter,theseasonthatjustdoesn’tknowwhentoleave!

Thismonth’sSundayruntoPeterThomson’sMotorcycle Collectionwasslightlydownonnumbersfromtheprevious coupleofmonthswithitlandingonFather’sDayandafewof theregularsunabletomakeit.Ihadforgottenhowgreatthe collectionwasandalsohowpassionatePeterwasabout passingonthehistoryofthemagnificentmachineshousedin hiscollection.

TherewillbenoSundayJauntinOctoberasit’sthefollowingdayaftertheswapmeet, buttheclubroomswillbeopenonthe6thforthosewhowanttocomedownandhave adrinkandstayonfordinner.

Onthe7thofSeptembertwocarsfromManawatubranchventuredoverthehillto WaipukuraufortheirVintagerally,againitwasagreatdayoutexploringtheCentral HawkesBayIwasaccompaniedbymyfatherLenandsonRoanwithAlistairandMary HowardintheirlovelyEssexboattailmakinguptheotherhalfoftheManawatu contingent.AbigthankstotheCentralHawkesBayBranchforagreatdayout. FastforwardaweekandahalfwewerebackinthecompanyoftheCHBbranchfor theannualinterbranchquiznightandasalways,anothergreatnight-but unfortunatelythisyearweweredefeatedbyourhosts.

OurnextmajoreventistheVintageOnlyrallyandatthetimeofwritingthiswehave 15entriesand4daystogobeforetheclosingdate.Therallyrouteisbasicallythe sameastheNightTrialbutgoingthroughWoodvilleforahalfsectioncomfortstop. HopetoseeyouallattheSwapmeet.

Welcometoourbranchandwelookforwardtoseeingyoubothatfutureclub activities.

TheManawatuBranchoftheVCChostedthe DaffodilDayClassicCarDisplayattheWrite PriceCarparkinFeildingon25th August.

VCCmembers,localcarclubsandmembers ofthepublicwereinvitedtobringavehicle todisplay–andapproximately160cars, trucks,vansandmotorcyclespackedthe carparkraisingalittleover$2000.00forthe CancerSociety.

Agreateffortandresult,andathankyoutoall branchmemberswhoparticipatedandhelpedin whateverwaytheydidtowardsmakingthisa successfulday.

Themuseumissetoutovertwolevels withtheupperlevelgivinga commandingviewofthewhole museum.

TheSeptemberSundayJauntvisited ThomsonsMotorcycleMuseumin RongoteaRoad.

LEFT:Firstinthedooristhisc1916 MilitaireCar.Itis1000ccandhasthree forwardspeedsandreverse. Maybethereversegeargaveit justificationforcallingitacar?

Therearerowsofmotorcyclesofevery typeandeveryeraondisplayinalarge andimmaculatelypresentedshedadorned withsignageandothermemorabilia.

Memorabiliaontheupperlevel includesnumberplatesandcaps,oil andpetrolvessels,aswellasmore signage.

TheorganisersoftherecentFeildingMilitaryTattoomadearequesttoourbranchto provideaboutadozenvintagecarsandcommercialvehiclestoparticipateinthe MilitaryTattoo.

Theywerelookingforanexamplefromeachera-from1900to1980.

Thirteenvehiclesweredecidedontosupplementasmallnumberofvehicleswhichhad beenselectedfromtheCoachHouseMuseum.

Thevehicleswereparkedup intheManfieldStadium beforetheparade.

Thevehicleswere usheredin-tocrossthe flooroneatatimetakingapproximatelya minutepervehicle.

Aseachvehiclecrossedthefloor,acommentary providingabitofmotoringhistoryand informationabouttheera,andofthevehicle, wasreadout.

1906CadillacDeliveryVan- LaurieCocker

In1906MrRPSmithbroughtthefirstcarto cometoFeilding-aCadillac.

AroundthistimeaCadillacdeliveryvanwould havebeenseenaroundthestreetsofFeilding. Asinglecylindergettinguptoabout30mph ontheflatandalittleslowerwhenloaded withgrocerieswhichgavethetwo-speedrear differentialagoodworkout.

1918CadillacTourer- JohnCallesen

Cartechnologydevelopedrapidly,andthis 1918CadillacTourerwasafivelitreV8 monstercomparedtothesinglecylinder Caddys.V8meantthatithadeightcylinders, fouroneachsideandshapedlikea‘V’. Thismodelwaspopularwiththewaroffices andtheambulances.AfterthewarNewmans coachlinesand AARD Motorcompanybrought sometoNewZealandforpassengers.Thisisaseven-seaterandstillpopularinNew Zealandfortouringaround.

1926Austin7- MauriceWasley

TheAustin7Tourer,oftenknownasthe Chummy,wasbuiltinvariousformsinBritain between1922and1930.Theysoldin1922 for£165intheUKandsoonreplacedthe motorcycleandsidecarforfamilytransport. ThiscarwasoriginallyownedbytheAvery familyfromFeilding.Itwaslaterrebuiltby MauriceWasleyofFeilding.

1927ChevroletCoupe- LenHaycock IncontrasttotheAustins,theChevrolet Coupewasalsobuiltin1927butdesignedfor longerjourneysandbetterroadsinthe developedUnitedStates. ThisonewasrestoredinBullsandistypicalof abusinesscarthatmighthavehadatrunk. ItwasAmericanandfullofsalesgear. TheDickieseatwasanoptioninthebackif theweatherwasfine.

1929 HudsonHearse- PeterBeachamp driverfortheparade-AlistairHoward Luxuryvehicleslikethis1929Hudsonwere oftenfittedoutforspecialistuse,thisone beingusedasaHearse.

TheHudsonwassolidandreliable-witha powerfulsupersixengine,andskilled coachbuildersaddedadignifiedtouchforthat finaljourney.

1924AustinPostOfficeVan- DennisMilne Fromaround1922theAustinMotorCompany suppliedchassistoGovernmentagencies,and ontheWellingtonwaterfrontthePostOffice garagebuiltbodies.

ThisAustinwasbuiltin1930andservedinthe PostOfficeuntil1943whenitwasusedfor farmworkintheRangiwahiaarea. ItwasparkedunderaMacrocarpatreein 1960,recoveredin2000,andrestoredtoits currentstate.

1936Austin12- DaveLivingston

TheAustinmodelsadvanced.TheAustin12 providedalargerandmorecomfortableride, butitwasstillsmallerandunderpowered comparedtoitsAmericancousins.

ThiscarwasfoundinaBunnythorpeswamp fiftyyearsagoandwaslovinglyrestored. Itisafuncartodrivebutrather underpoweredformoderntraffic,butitalways camehomeunderitsownpower.

1936ChevroletMaster - KeithHughes GeneralMotorsopenedaplantinPetonein 1926producingChevrolet,PontiacandBuick cars.

This1939ChevroletMasterwasafavouritefor farmersandfarmservicepersonnelespecially ontheruggedcountryroadsaroundhere. Withoutcellphonestheagentswouldvisit farmsinpersonandcoversubstantialmiles.

1936 ChevroletCoupe- BrianJames Therounderlinesofthe1941Chevrolet Coupegivewitnesstotheevolutionofthe motorcarandhintsofourmoderncarfleet. ImportsfromAmericagrewinthewaryears alongwiththetroopsthatboughtaspectsof Americanculturetoourshores.

1951AustinDevon- BryanAbraham Inthe1950’sAustinproducedacarseries namedaftersoutherncountiesinEnglandtheDevon,DorsetandSomerset.

This1951AustinDevonwasareliable,safe, butsomewhatdulltransportformanyfamilies. TheBritishdesignechoedthejellymould stylingmanyAmericancars-adeveloping trendimmediatelyfollowingthewar.

1960MorrisMinor- JanisJeffers

Inthemidstofflowerpower,miniskirtsand theBeatles,Morrisdevelopedtheveryoriginal MorrisMinor.Thedesignwasaradicalrethink ofpost-warcardesignandover1.6million weremadebetween1948and1968. Itwasverypracticalifsomewhataustere insideandservedasbasictransportformany familiesduringthebabyboom. ThiscarhasbelongedtothesameFeilding familythroughoutitslife.

1973FordXAFalcon- AllanHardacre Inthelate1960sAustralianplantsbeganto assembleAmericanmodels-Holden,Falcon andValiant.

This1973XAFordFalconisinitsoriginalKelly Greenwithacreamvinyltopmakingita luxuryV8.TheFalcon,HoldenandValiant modelswereworkhorsesforNewZealand farmers.ThisonewassoldnewinPateathen onsoldtoaFeildingcouplebeforecomingto itscurrentowner.

1980Jaguar- JohnIreland

Therehasalwaysbeenroomforluxury vehiclesandnothingcomparedtoBritish luxury.

SMALLESTPETROLENGINE

SCIENTISTShavebuiltthesmallestpetrolengine,tinyenoughtopoweraWATCH. Themini-motor,whichrunsfortwoyearsonasinglesquirtoflighterfuel,issetto revolutionizeworldtechnology.Itproduces700timesmoreenergythanaconventional batterydespitebeinglessthanacentimetrelong(Notevenhalfaninch!).Itcouldbe usedtooperatelaptopsandmobilephonesformonthsdoingawaywiththeneedfor recharging.Expertsbelieveitcouldbephasingoutbatteriesinsuchitemswithinjustsix years.Theengine,minuteenoughtobebalancedonafingertip,hasbeenproducedby engineersattheUniversityofBirmingham.

DrKyleJiang,leadinvestigatorfromtheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineering,said:“We arelookingatanindustrialrevolutionhappeninginpeoples’pockets.Thebreakthroughis anenormousstepforward.Deviceswhichneedre-chargingornewbatteriesarea problembutinsixyearswillbeathingofthepast.”Otherapplicationsfortheengine couldincludemedicalandmilitaryuses,suchasrunningheartpacemakersormini reconnaissancerobots.Atpresent,charginganordinarybatterytodeliveroneunitof energyinvolvesputting2,000unitsintoit.Thelittleengine,becauseenergyisproduced locally,isfarmoreeffective.Oneofthemainproblemsfacedbyengineerswhohavetried toproducemicromotorsinthepasthasbeenthelevelsofheatproduced.Theengines gotsohottheyburnedthemselvesoutandcouldnotbere-used.TheBirminghamteam overcamethisbyusingheat-resistantmaterialssuchasceramicandsiliconcarbide.

ProfessorGrahamDavies,headoftheuniversity’sengineeringschool,said:“We've broughttogetheralltheengineeringdisciplines,materials,chemicalengineering,civil engineering,andmechanicalengineering.
