TheyearstartedoffwithagreatdayoutforLen’sNewYear’sDaypicnicandthe normalbigturnoutofnearlyfiftycarsfromasfarawayasWellingtonandTaranaki enjoyedarelaxingtimeatMtLeesReserve.

ThenexteventfortheyearistheRestorationrunonthe11th.Wehaven’thadone oftheseforquiteawhile.GlyntellsmethatmyplaceisfirstsoIbetterhavea cleanupsopeoplecanactuallygetaroundmyVeteranFiattolookatit!!Thenthe nextdayistheVeteranandTwowheelbrakerally.Thisalwaysgetsalotofoutof townsupportaswellbutitwouldbenicetoseefewmorelocalsjoininginthathave eligiblevehiclesforthisrun.

AttheendoflastyearthebranchreceivedarequestfromWinchesterSchooltobring somevehiclestotheir‘WheelsDay’. Belowisanemailreceivedfromtheschoolthankingthoseinvolvedfortheirtime.

ISETTA - 1953-1955

Iso,Milan

ThecaroriginatedwiththeItalianfirmofIsoSpA.Intheearly1950sthecompany wasbuildingrefrigerators,motorscootersandsmallthree-wheeledtrucks.The Isettawasamicrocarbuiltunderlicenseinanumberofdifferentcountries, includingArgentina,Spain,Belgium,France,Brazil,Germany,andtheUnited Kingdom. Itcausedasensationwhenitwasintroducedtothemotoringpressin TurininNovember1953asitwasunlikeanythingseenbefore. Becauseofitsegg shapeandbubble-likewindows,itbecameknownasabubblecar,anamealso giventoothersimilarvehicles.

Forallitsshortspanofthree seasons,theIsettawasthecar thatstartedthe‘bubble’fashion andwasmadebyafirmusually associatedwithmotorcyclesand scooters.It'sproportionswere exceptionallycompact:the overalllengthwasonly7ft4½ inches,andthenarrowrear trackoflessthan2feetwas chaindriven-adifferential unnecessary.Therearmountedenginewasanaircooled236cctwin2-strokewith commoncombustionchamber, ratheronTrojanlines,butthespecificationincludedindependentfrontsuspension, hydraulicbrakes,anda4speedforwardandareverseall-synchromeshgearbox. TheIsettatookover30secondstoreach50km/h(31mph)fromrestandtop speedwasonlyabout75km/h(47mph). Thefueltankheld13litres(2.9impgal) -theIsettawouldgetsomewherearound5.6L/100km(42mpg). Thelargeswing-updoorwasacharacteristicoftheegg-shapedbody.Thesteering wheelandcolumnswungwithittogiveeasyaccess.

Afterconstructingsome1,000units,productionoftheItalianbuiltcarsceasedin 1955. After1955carswerebuiltunderlicencebyVELAMinFrance,butthefirm whoreallyputtheIsettaonthemapwereBMWofGermany,whomarketeda versionwiththeirownsingle-cylinder4-strokeenginein1954andcontinuedto makeitupto1963.IsettaofGreatBritainLtdbuilt3and4wheelmodelsunder BMWlicencefrom1957to1964.

WALKER TRUCKS - RONGOTEA, & ELECTRIC VEHICLES

WithmembersinvitedtodisplaytheircarsattheAprilRongoteaCarShowDay, thefollowingarticle,abitofRongoteaHistory,maybeofinteresttosome:

InAugust1917twoelectriclorriesdrovesilentlyintoTheSquare,”creatingagreat dealofinterest-especiallyfrommeninterestedinup-to-datetraction”.Rongoteawas thefirstdairyfactoryinNew Zealandtoinvestinelectric vehicles.Electricitywasall therageintheearly20th century.LikeIT100years later,itwasseenasaforce thatwouldtransformthe future.Allthestreetscould belitatnight,industry revolutionisedandhousework wouldbecomeabreeze.

AChristchurchstarcolumnist suggested“theelectriciron hasmadeironingapleasure”

andbuyinghiswifeanelectricoven,ahusbandcouldconservehiswife's“youthand energy”.

ChristchurchCityledtheadoptionofthisnewtechnologyonaccountofthenewly openedLakeColeridgehydroelectricstation.By1920councilbuses,servicevehicles andeventhedogcatcher’s‘paddywagon’wereelectricallypoweredusing rechargeableEdisonnickel/ironbatteries.Thecitycouncilpromotedelectricvehicles, promising“poweratpriceswhichwouldmakepetrollookpositivelysilly”.

TheWalkertrucksboughtby Rongotea’sCo-opDairy Companywerebuiltin Chicago.Whiletheyhad onlyatopspeedof22kph andarangeofabout65km, theWalker’ssimplicityand reliabilitymadeitapractical solutionfordeliveringand collectinggoodswithina limitedarea.Thismadeit idealforaco-operativedairy factorybasedinasmalltown servingfarmswithina20to 30kmradius.

RongoteaCo-operativeDairyCompany’sWalkertrucks,1918. Thepressedsteelwheelsranonsolidrubbertyres.

TheywerethemostpopularelectrictruckinNewZealandandwereusedbydairy factories,localgovernmentandprivatefirmssuchascoalmerchants,bakersandhome milksuppliers.PalmerstonNorthrananelectrictruckrefusecollectionuntilthemid1930s.Bytheearly20th centurydairyinghadbecomethemainsourceofincomefor Rongoteafarmers.By1911thefarmer-ownedco-operativedairycompanybuiltthe substantialbrickbuilding,whichstillstandsinthecentreofthetownship.Initially farmersbroughttheirmilkinmetalchurnstothefactorybyhorseandcart.Thecream wasthenseparatedtomakebutter.By1914manyfarmerswereusinghome separatorsandfeedingtheskimmilktotheirpigs.Thisinturnledtothedairyfactory collectingthecreambytruck.TheRongoteaDairycompany’sfirstmotorvehicleswere twopetrol-driventrucks,aDionandanArgyll.

Thesewerereplacedin1917by3Walkers,whichreducedthecostofcreamcollection from£868poundsperannumto£478.

TheimpulsetochangetoelectricpowermayhavecomefromtheCompanySecretary AlexanderSinclair.HeleftRongoteatotakeupthepositionofGeneralManagerofthe EdisonbatteryagencyinChristchurch.Fromherehewouldpreachthegospelof electricvehiclesandEdisonbatteriestolocalbodiesthroughoutthecountry.“Sixty milesfor2d!”,hetoldagroupofbusinessmenandBoroughCouncillorsinWhangarei, quotingRongotea’sannualsavingsbywayofexample

Liketoday’selectricvehicles,theWalkerhadnogearboxorclutchbecauseitcould developpeakpowerat0rpm.

Theelectricmotorwascontainedinthedifferentialhousingonthebackaxleand transmitteditspowerdirectlyviaasimplereductiongearinginsideeachbackwheel. Thecontrolswerebasic-asteeringwheel,twobrakepedalsonothersideofthe steeringcolumn,aspeedcontrolleverandafootpedaltoreversethemotor.Power camefromabankofEdisonbatteriesheldinacontainerbeneaththetray.These wouldbechargedovernight.Thecompanyevensolditssurpluspowertothelocal counciltopowerthetown’sstreetlights.Likemosttruckstoday,Walkerswere suppliedtothebuyerasa chassistowhichasuitable bodyandcabcouldbefitted, usuallybyalocal coachbuilder.Rongotea’s truckshadareasonably comprehensivecabwith rolledcanvas‘blinds’above eachdoorway.Thesewere builtbyGlover’sblacksmiths andcoachbuilderswhose premisesstoodoppositethe dairyfactoryonDouglasSquare.

rudimentaryarrangementofafoldinghoodofthekindusedonhorse-drawnvehicles andearlyopencars.

Presumablythedriver’sexperiencewasnoworsethanthatofacarteronhiswagonor dray.TheheydayofelectriccommercialvehiclesinNewZealandlastedwellintothe 1920s.Thiswastrueofmanycountiesatthetime,particularlytheUnitedStates. HarrodsdepartmentstoreinLondonoperatedafleetofelectricdeliveryvehicles,which accordingtoAlexanderSinclairinoneofhispromotionalspeeches-wereoperatedby ‘ladydrivers”.Withthepromiseoffurtherhydroelectricschemeshebelieved“thedays ofpetrol-drivenvehicleswouldbeover,oratleastseriouslycurtailed.Despitethis,the pendulumswungagainstelectricvehicles.

Withtheadventofcheap,mass-producedcarsandtheopeningofnewoilfields,the economicadvantageheldbyelectricvehicleswasreduced.Startermotorsreplaced thecrankhandleandpetrolstationsbeganappearing,offeringaflexibilitythatelectric vehicleslacked.Electrictruckscontinuedtobeusedforshort-haulworkwherethey couldberecharged overnight,butthewriting wasonthewall.

RongoteaCo-opDairy Companyreplacedit's electrictruckswithpetrolpoweredvehiclesin1935. Theyhadbeenontheroad formorethan19yearsand, apartfromcartingcream hadbeenusedforvarious dutiesrangingfromlighting achurchtopoweringa movieprojectorinthe RongoteaHall.

OnoneofmyRallyPlaqueBoardsisasmallwoodenplaquewithahand engravedKowhaiFlowerandTaihape1985.Ithinkthismayhavebeenthefirst “Gumboot”RallyorganisedbyRobertBainesandthelateGraemeSutherland. Itprovedsopopularthatfutureralliesattractedmembersfrommanybranches oftheNorthIsland.Therewas,formanyyears,acontingentfromWhangarei whomadethetripdown.Inthoseearlyyears,wecampedattheABBAMotor CampinAbattoirRoad(nowheadquartersforaShearingGang).Itwasso popularthateveninMillenniumYearwhenpeoplewereflockingtotheEast Coasttoseethesuncomeup.Wehadagreatturnout.Oneyearwemeta youngAmericancoupleontheirhoneymooninthecampkitchen.Adiscussion aboutoldcarsledustoinvitethemtoourcommunalfoodtentfora“flagon” beforetheyweretoheadoffthenextday.They,alongwiththeWhangarei CrewleftmyhomeinNapieraweeklater!

Fastforwardmanyyears,wemotelthesedaysandalthoughGraemehaspassed awayalongwhileback,RobertBainesisstillactivelyinvolvedinrunningthe event(alongwithagoodteamfromtheWhanganuiBranch).Thisyear’srally sawaround30carsstartonNewYear’sDayattheTaihapeDomain.

NewYear’sDayhappenedto beCath’s60thBirthdayand shedidnotwantafusstobe made.However,somehowa largebannerpromotingthe factseemedtobeflyinghigh whenwegottothestart!As alwayswiththeGumbootRally therewaslotsofgreatback roadmotoring,lotsofgravel, lotsofdustandlotsofgreat company.Weheadedto Whanganuiforthetriphome viaWaiouruandFieldsTrack, andthensomebackroadsinto Marton.

Allupjustunder400milesforthe3days-Both“OldGirls”performedwell!
