Chairman’s Report Hi everyone,

Greetings from Lower Hutt hospital…a word of advice from the Chairman… in old age don’t climb ladders. That’s all you are getting this month… see you all at Daffodil Day. From the Plaster Cast Chairman. Cheers

Rob Galloway

Club Captain’s Report Well another month has slipped by. We did however get a break in the weather at the Rai Valley on our combined meet with Nelson Branch (Snow Run). A great turnout from both Clubs made it an enjoyable time. Rob Galloway organised a Turkey game for a Club challenge, with Margie Wilson, Marlborough Branch being the quickest. Also, thanks to Diane and Kevin Payton for their help organising the hall for this event. Our Mid Winter dinner and Annual Prize giving was also well attended but we are still catching up with some of the trophy recipients. Congratulations to all winners. New Members. We extend you all a warm welcome to the Club. Please come along and join us either on a Wednesday morning 10am at the Clubrooms for morning tea, or come along to a Noggin and Natter on the last Friday night of the month about 5pm, or any of our Events. We would love to see you. To Members that have not been feeling well, or have had family with health issues we wish you all the best for your recovery.

Catherine Millar.

Update from Your Kitchen

Custodian

Spring is here hard to believe that seven months of the year has passed us by already with July being a rather wet and depressing one. But the daffodils are starting to flower and the lawns will be starting to grow so hopefully, the weather is going to improve. The kitchen had a couple of functions on, during the month, a surprise 80th Birthday and a luncheon for the College old Girls. These were very successful and enjoyed by all. Also had Mid Winter dinner at the clubs of Marlborough which was also our prize giving. August is looking to be a busy one as we have Daffodill Day on Sunday the 21st. We would like donations of baking also if you could spare an hour during the day to help in the kitchen it would be much appreciated. I will be at the park on Saturday afternoon from 1.30 to 4pm if you wish to deliver your baking then. Also if you would like to join in with us when catering for functions please come along we have a lot of fun and meet some interesting people. Just give me a call. Noggin and Natter this month is Friday the 26th and its a Pot Luck.

Cheers Dale Our local doctor's wife was experiencing car trouble, but the garage was unable to make any immediate repairs. The doctor himself rang and asked when the job could be done. Said the man at the garage "Sorry, I can't manage it until the boss is back. He's away sick and I'm the only one here." "Well, when will he be back?" asked the doctor. Well I don't know, replied the mechanic. "But you ought to -you're his doctor!" Joke Submitted by Dale

Secretary’s Scribblings Let’s hope that the month of August is a bit drier than July, and we can get some drying around the grounds, especially with Daffodil Day coming up on the 21 st of August. I hope you have been able to keep dry, and that you haven’t been flooded out. From our committee meeting on Wednesday. The annual Mud Plug event, organised by Peter Thwaites, is being held on the 14th August. I am sure it will go well, as there is heaps of mud around this year. Cath has organised a run out to see this interesting event so come along, it might be something you could bet involved in. Daffodil day is all go, and Kelly has had his fundraising hat on again, and the coffers are filling quite nicely, even though he has had to step back a bit because of his health. Volunteers will be needed for the day, and there will be a roster sheet in the Redman room for you to put your name down for gate duty and car allocation spaces. Please don’t be shy, as the more people involved the easier it will be. We have some 320 members of the branch, so please don’t leave it all to the dozen or so people who are always there to help. We also need baking to be sold in the kitchen for smokos and lunches, and some more help in this department. Maybe some of our newer members could help out, so come along and see what we do as a group of older vehicle enthusiasts. Bring your vehicle along for display from 7.30 am but prior to 9am when the gates open for the public. If you can’t get in to put your name down, either email me at marlborough@vcc.org.nz or ring me on 0272471089. This is the Vintage Car Clubs National Day, and we have done very well over the past 6 years so let’s make it a very successful day again with all funds raised go to the local Cancer Society. The next major event coming up is our Biennial rally on 14 th to 16th October. This event clashes with the Targa Rally based in Nelson this year, as they decided to change their date from Labour weekend, after we had set our dates. We run this event every two years with Nelson running it in alternative years. Organisation is well advanced, and entry forms will be out soon. There will be the need for some helpers in Marshalling on the Saturday, so once again, don ’t be shy. The more you put into any group, the more you will get out of it. I had an email form Don Anderson who has 7, 1952 Prefect cars for sale. These all need restoring so look out for the advertisement. Maybe a suitable car for the mud plug? Around the grounds, our crew has been busy with more tidying up and older plants removed and will be replaced with new plantings. The rest of the large She Oaks are on the list to be removed, probably in the summer.

10

You may notice a new VCC sign at the intersection of Arthur Baker Place and New Renwick Road, installed by Rob Galloway. There has been a comment from a member of the public to us about how great the grounds around our complex are looking, so it is nice to know that the work done is appreciated. I am heading to Auckland for the Clubs AGM and Executive meetings on the 12th and 13th August. If there is anything you want me to mention at these meetings, please let me know. Have a great month of Heritage motoring.

Chris Bird New Members David Oddie, 1954 MG Colin and Jane McKenzie,1957 Austin, and 1932 Chevrolet Stephen Pellett, Bridget Ennals and Xavier Ennals-Pellett, 1973 BMW Welcome to our branch, and we hope to see you at our events.

From the Blokes in the Shed… Due to July being the wettest since records began, a search of the compound has unfortunately failed to unearth any amphibious vehicle parts for another project, however should August produce a similar quantity of rain a pile of timber has been located and likely suitable for the construction of an ark !!. They say it pays to advertise, well last month we advertised a large quantity of car doors which have been languishing in a very dark corner gathering dust for possibly 50 years, well almost half have been sold, totally filling the proud new owners Ute!. With the sorting and disposal to scrap of many axle assemblies some which may be of interest after identification and are not duplicated many times over are to be retained. We often receive accolades for our parts sheds operation and not withstanding many from our friendly Nelson members who not only purchase parts but often contribute to our inventory as well. It is considered to be a valuable resource and it would be remiss of me not to attribute the success of our operation to our willing, able and reliable assistants, thank you one and all guys. Daffodil Day Support Our support of this event in the past has always been of a high standard and hopefully we can respond again this year. Several motorcycle members, past and present have had cancer problems as have a larger number of our other branch members. Past chairman Kelly Landon Lane has already put in a lot of effort obtaining sponsorship and the branch committee also has put in a lot of time with multiple tasks associated with staging the event, now it is up to us.

Once again, our motorcycles will be displayed in the area adjacent to the electrical shed. Some of us will be there early to get set up and a helping hand would be appreciated. If you wish to leave your machine and return home, we can supply a ride. If you have a motorcycle which is not mobile or registered remember we have a trailer which is available. Unrestored originals are always interesting. Non member friends are welcome as are non vcc eligible machines. There is always a lot of interesting cars and bikes to look at and it is good to have a day off sitting around having a yarn. Times and charges are elsewhere in this newsletter.

Trev

Motorcycle Report Giving up on going to Picton and heading to Havelock paid dividend’s, fine weather, road open and a good turnout of bikes. Thanks to Ben for doing the backup, last time he hauled the trailer to Havelock he had 2 bikes loaded by lunchtime but got no takers this trip. On the restoration front a couple of bikes have been through certification recently and at least one more is off the bike stand and has its feet on the ground for the first time. Take note the garage run is now on the 18 th September after the third Sunday clashing with the club presentation lunch and now daffodil day, we have reorganised it for the September run.

MARLBOROUGH SPORTING TRIAL MARLBOROUGH BRANCH VINTAGE CAR CLUB OF NEW ZEALAND SUNDAY 14th AUGUST 2022 AT BLENHEIM We have a new venue this year in the Kaituna Valley between Renwick and Havelock. Bring your gumboots! Members of the Vintage Car Club are invited to participate in our Sporting Trial. The event follows the style of “Trials” events which were popular in the UK in the 1950s, where drivers and their crews endeavor to get their cars as far as possible up steep and slippery farm tracks and through other difficult courses. A number of these courses will be set out and points are awarded for the distance attained. The cumulative score at the end of the event will determine the winners of the various classes. The event will conclude with a prize giving at the Woodbourne Tavern Renwick where nibbles will be provided.

Eligibility • All entrants must be members of the Vintage Car Club of NZ (Inc)

and hold a current Membership card and drivers license.

• The event is for pre 1960, front engined, two wheel drive, VCC

eligible vehicles. The maximum number of entries per car is two drivers.

• Entered vehicles must be in a safe mechanical condition and will be

inspected prior to the Event. Normal road tyre’s only can be used. No snow or mud grip tyre’s. Space saver tyre’s will be permitted. Please check your tyre’s to make sure they comply. • The event officials have the final say in this matter. Differentials will be checked to ensure they are working.

Classes  Class one

Short wheelbase - 90” or less  Class two Long wheelbase - over 90” Other prize categories; First Lady, Best Dressed and the coveted “Balls-up” trophy. The event organizers will have the final say in this matter. Each class will be judged separately and have a class winner. The overall highest points scorer will be declared the winner.

15

Rules and Regulations 1. Cars must be pre 1960, front engine two wheel drive. 2. Distance from centre of front axle to the front spark plug must not exceed 1/5th (20%) of the wheelbase 3. Differentials must not be locked or of limited slip type. 4. Please do not cause embarrassment to everyone by turning up with a stiff diffy. 5. Brakes must not operate independently on individual wheels, i.e. fiddle brakes are not allowed. 6. Seating for driver and passenger must face forward and the back of the front row of seats must be between the axles. 7. Dual wheels are not allowed. 8. Centre pivoted front axles, if used, must have stops fitted to limit the travel to +/- 15 deg? (this is to reduce the chance of a car rolling when a rear wheel lifts on a hillside) 9. Tyre bead clamps are permitted. 10. Road tyres only can be used; these must be of a width and section appropriate to the pre 1960 style of car used, and to the spirit of the event. Tyres designed for off road use are not permitted, for example - dual purpose, mud grip, town and country trail bike etc. Tyres must have a tread pattern such that the blocks are not more than 10mm deep nor more than 10mm apart laterally or circumferentially. 11. There must not be an uninterrupted lateral gap between the side blocks i.e. from side to side. The enhancing of the tread pattern by re-cutting is unacceptable. 12. Cars must meet an acceptable safety standard, including - secure battery, seats and fuel tank, safe steering and suspension, double throttle return springs, easily identifiable ignition on/off switch. All entrants must agree to abide by the rules and regulations for the event and sign the indemnity form on the back of the entry form. The object of the event is to get as far as possible through the courses which are set out for the event. Black numbered markers, which must be kept on the right of the car, indicate the achieved score. White markers indicate the left side of the course. If you stray off course, or touch a marker, the previous marker will be the score achieved. Some discretion will be given by the marshals, to alter the course slightly, to assist long wheelbase cars through any tight corners. As the event is being held on the private property, and a working dairy farm, entrants, their friends, crew members and spectators must be respectful of the

16

owners property and be sure all rubbish is taken with you. You will therefore confine yourself to the area of the event. When traveling around the property do not exceed 10kph and stay on the defined tracks. Leave stock gates as you have found them. There is to be no practicing or hooning around on other open areas. Passengers may be carried provided there are passenger seats in the vehicle. Passengers must be in the normal forward facing, seated position. Passengers must be over the age of 16 years and have signed the indemnity form which will be available at the event. Your vehicle is to be driven in a safe and sensible manner and with care at all times, taking into account the conditions for each individual test. The organisers will exclude entrants from the event if they fail to do so. Entries will be accepted or declined at the discretion of the organising committee. This includes late arrivals.

Directions to the Venue We are using the same property as last year. Parking will be around the woolshed and out buildings. National Veteran Rally 2023 Friday 24-Sunday 26 February Hosted by Auckland Branch Based in rural Franklin in Tuakau, 56km south of Metro Auckland Registration open to all veteran vehicles manufactured before 31 Dec.1918 VIC required. The rally is based in the expansive grounds of LaValla Estate less than 2km from the historical small township of Tuakau. Tuakau is located in the district of Franklin. Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the west coast and is known as the breadbasket of Auckland, growing potatoes, vegetables, and other products on its rich volcanic soils. The area offers great motoring country for veteran vehicles. To reach Tuakau and LaValla, those coming from the south can leave the Waikato Expressway (SH1) at Pokeno, just south of the Bombay Hills. Those coming from the north exit the motorway at Bombay. The registration fee covers: ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast; light refreshments at start and finish of each day’s run; three lunches; final banquet dinner; Movie Night (in the small cinema at LaValla); Rally Pack and plaque.

Key Dates The event runs over the last weekend of February, the weekend following the Art Deco Festival in Napier. The rally commences on Friday morning with registration from 8.30 and breakfast and rally briefing from 9.00 to 10.00, ready to depart on the first day’s run at 10.30. The rally concludes with a celebratory dinner and awards on Sunday evening. Rally Headquarters The rally is based at LaValla. Registration, the first ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast and the final dinner are held at LaValla. Each day’s run departs and finishes at LaValla with light refreshments. There will be ample opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new friends in a beautiful, relaxing setting. LaValla has an interesting history as a former Marist college, now in private

24

ownership. It is less than 2km out of the township of Tuakau, made up of well-maintained and expansive grounds (109 acres) overlooking rural countryside. LaValla provides a secure site where veteran vehicles, modern cars and trailers can be safely parked for the duration. There is limited accommodation at LaValla, and more accommodation is also available at the nearby boutique Tuakau Hotel. Other options are the motels in Pukekohe and Pokeno.

Rally Programme Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the west coast, bounded to its south by the Waikato River. Built-up areas, busy roads and steep roads will be avoided. There are short and long routes each day. Day 1: The route uses roads criss-crossing the Bombay Hills including the old main roads before the motorway was opened. Day 2: The route crosses the Waikato River on the iconic Tuakau Bridge and follows the river to its mouth at Port Waikato. Day 3: The destination is the historical port town of Waiuku, taking in Glenbrook Vintage railway close by.
