The North Otago Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Inc.

Chairperson Report

Normally at this time of the year I would be telling you about how its June and I am ready to go on the Irishman Rally. Sadly, this year I will spend the time at home as the wee Chrysler tourer broke down on her last outing in April. Though it is always nice to have a long weekend at home.

This month is our AGM on Sunday 11th June 1.30 pm at our clubrooms, please make sure you put this date in your calendar and come along. Nominations for Committee will close on Wednesday 7th June, so if you are thinking about standing for a position on the committee then make sure you send your nomination in before this date.

As we our holding our AGM this month then we will not be having a club night. Recently I received an email with an update on the proposed changes to the National Management Structure for the Vintage Car Club. The update summarised all the feedback from the branches at Executive meeting and then asked for feedback on the 3 options for the Management committee. Based on the feedback from our members in March and more recently from the committee we have decided that we would support the structure of 12 members on the National Management committee. This is the option that was strongly supported by our branch at our club night in March when these options were discussed. If anybody would like to have a read of the email with the feedback and options for Management committee then, please get in touch with me.

On Saturday 10th June we will have members of the Ashburton branch visit us while they are on Tour in Oamaru for the weekend. Please come up to the Clubrooms on Saturday at 3.30 pm for a coffee and a chat. The parts shed will be open.

As this is my final report as Chairperson for our branch, I would like to say Thank You to everyone for your support during this time, especially those who have been on the committee with me. I have very much enjoyed my time as Chairperson and certainly have grown during my time. I look forward to remaining on the committee for the next year as Immediate Past Chairperson.

Happy Motoring

Rebecca

"A Trip back in time."

The May mid month run was a visit to Pen-y-Bryn (pronounced Pennybrin) which is welsh for 'Top of the Hill'. It was a good turnout in spite of the gloomy weather and in all 28 club members came on the run.

We arrived at the house at about 2pm and were welcomed by James Glucksman - one of the owners, who with his partner, James Boosey, have owned the place since 2010. The original house was built in 1889 for John and Fanny Bullied and was designed by Forrester and Lemon.

The house has a category one classification with the Historic Places Trust, and is believed to be the largest single story house of this age in New Zealand. The extensive gardens were full of autumn colours, but a slight drizzle prevented us from exploring outside.

Inside we were free to explore the huge rooms and couldn't help but look in admiration at the beautiful woodwork and ornate ceilings. The great billiard room with a full sized billiard table is a joy to behold. A superb job of restoration and improvement has been achieved by the two James' without losing any of the original ambience of the place.

The club would like to thank James and James for showing us around and providing afternoon tea in the dining room. We understand that they are selling Pen-y-Bryn, and are having a beautiful new house built in peaceful Kakanui with great views of the sea and mountains. We wish them well.

If you go into Google, type in Pen-y-Bryn Lodge Oamaru NZ, and then click on 'See Photos', you will be able to see the true splendour of the the place. Or Click Here
