November 2023
Austin 7 special McLeans Island Swapmeet 2023
The North Otago Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Inc.
Secretary’s Corner – November Hi Everyone Having some computer skills is a requirement in the role of Secretary these days and this skill set is not readily available within our Branch, so I have put my hand up to return to the role of Secretary. however, I will stick to administration only. I want to acknowledge the benefit our Branch has when the Club Captain role is filled. And I encourage members to submit items of interest for our newsletter directly to our Editor Graeme Simpson (gsimpsonyyy@gmail.com). New Members Welcome to new members Mike Lilly of Weston who has a 1948 Ford Super Delux 8, and Ken Read of Herbert who has a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro. Also in the membership process are Gordon and Janice Mackay of Beach Road who have several Ford V8s and a Nissan. Name badges are on order and I look forward to handing these to our new members. So, a friendly reminder to wear name badges at club events. While lots of us know each other, not all of us do. Look out for our new members and help them to feel welcome. Afterall, it is the main reason we exist, to enjoy each others company and share our interest in older vehicles. Membership Renewals It is that time again when we receive our membership renewals. Here is a note from Linda our National Administrator. The invoice renewals for the subscription year 1 November 2023 – 31 October 2024 have now been emailed to all members with an email address and posted to the remainder of our members. For those members who have had the invoices emailed to them, please remind them to check their spam/folder as our National Office bulk emails tend to end up there. If members add our bulk email address nationaloffice@vccnz.nz to their safe addresses list, then this should prevent this occurring again in the future. I have had a number of invoice emails bounce back as undeliverable, and I am steadily working my way through them. We have had some email clients reject our emails as they suspect them as spam due to recent tightening of their spam filters. For those members I am resending the invoice from my admin@vcc.org.nz email address and they seem to be getting through. Where the invoice bounces back us undeliverable due to the email address not existing etc, then the invoice is being printed and posted. If you have any concerns about renewing your membership, please don’t hesitate to contact me 027 695 66 44. I will be sent a list soon of our members who have not yet paid to follow up on. Regards Lee Brehaut
Chairman's Comments. I am glad to report that Gilbert Ellery is now home from Hospital and is being well looked after by his Daughters, we wish him a good recovery. I would like to thank Wanda Kent for her great help in taking down the minutes at the committee meetings for the last five months, we would have been lost without her, thank you Wanda. We now have a secretary, Lee Brehaut volunteered to do it again, and was elected as Secretary at the last committee meeting, Thank you Lee. We also welcome two new committee members, Gordon Hay and John Adamson thank you gentlemen. As you may know I finished the Vauxhall/Bedford ute and sold her to a chap in Nelson, I have had a few people question why I don't keep the vehicles I renovate, my enjoyment is in working on them, watching them go from near scrap to the finished article, I always like to be working on something, Jen describes it as Old Age Therapy and it also keeps the mind active, looking through some old pictures the other day we came across a picture of an Anglia 100e with the bottom half blue from the waist line down, the red stripe I put on last year has now gone and the colour blue has been bought, I have finished one side and am now doing the other side. We will have her ready for the Teapot Rally on the 12th of November. Is there anybody else out there that has a project on the go, I would very much like to hear from you, and if you are willing, I could do a write up on it for the Distributor, Please let me know, send to blunden@slingshot.co.nz. There is quite a lot happening in November, 12th Teapot Rally, 18th Swap Meet in the morning and grand parade in the afternoon. There is the Windsor Rally on the 2nd December. Happy Motoring to you all, All the best, Clive, [Chairman]

St John visit October Club night
The October Club evening was an interesting informative talk and discussion from two members from St John Ambulance personnel. Maria Dickie, the St John Regional Manager based in Oamaru talked about all the various activities of the organisation. The most visible is the actual ambulances which are manned by paid personnel and volunteers. The Government pays the wages of the paid members and the supplies in the ambulance but not the ambulance vehicles. The local Ambulance committee supply the vehicles etc. The Cadet section trains children in first aid and other related activities, whilst encouraging participating in various community activities all designed to gain their Grand Prior Badges. This is the only civilian award that can be worn on the uniforms of our Armed Service Members. Many Cadets over the years have become Ambulance Officers, nurses and other medical and caregiving personnel. There are many community activities St John organise with volunteers such as phone calls to elderly people, helping the hospital staff, providing outings for the elderly and lonely people. Another activity in the pipeline is a shuttle service to Dunedin Hospital which they hope to get up and running in the near future so are looking for volunteer drivers for this service. All of this is hopefully going to have all activities and office at the new Ambulance Station building in Weston Road. Carolyn Collett the St John Ambulance Alarm Manager for this area. The VCC members present were able to inspect the various alarms that are available, how they are installed and the area they will cover. The backup systems that are put in place at the time of installation and reassurance that an ambulance will be dispatched if you do not respond to the voice communication or your backup people are not available. There is a super model alarm which is available for people who are very mobile which gives the co-ordinates of where you are when you push the button and depending where you are you can talk to the alarm service. This is of course a more expensive than the homebased alarm but certainly a good option for active older people. The most important message from Carolyn was wear the alarm all the time! They are waterproof! So bath, shower or swim you have it where you can press the button without trying to find or reach it at the other side of the bathroom. It can also be pressed to help someone else if you see an accident outside or need police or fire services. And don’t hesitate to press the button if you are feeling at all “not quite right” and you will be talking to a human ambulance officer who will advise you
or reassure you. Depending on your circumstances WINZ may fund your alarm and St John will never knock on your door to try to sell you an alarm system, you must contact them. Door knocking is practiced by some alarm systems. We were also able to inspect the display of First Aid Kits which are available from St John shop and also how to always check the contents to be sure the contents are not passed the use by date. Nothing worse than a sticking plaster with no stickability. At the conclusion Ernest George presented Maria with the proceeds of the Shiny Bits Auction held at the previous Club Meeting. Supper was enjoyed by all present and a lively discussion continued amongst those present. Thank you to those who attended and we hope everyone will remember you are never too old to volunteer for some aspect of the St John Organisation and contribute to your community.
