WhatwasthefirstChryslerAirflow?
TheAirflowwasatechnologicalmarvelwithautomaticoverdriveandraked “safetyglass”windshield.Introducedatthe 1934NewYorkAutoShow,the eight-cylinderAirflowcausedasensation.Ordersfortherevolutionarycar pouredin,andtheAirflow'scomplexconstructionwasrushed.

Rightwellherewego.Firstofall,thankstoStuartBatterbyforhandingover tometheEditor’sroleandbeingpreparedtomentormeintothisposition. ThoughtIwouldstartoffmyfirsteditorialwithabitaboutmyself.Iam66 yearsold.IwasborninKawakawabutwasbroughtuponthefamilyfarm inWaihouValley,Okaihauwithtwoolderandoneyoungerbrotherplusthe youngestofallmysister.Forthosewhodon'tknowthearea,ourfarmwas splitbythenorthernBayofIslandsandHokiangaBoundaries.
Ileftschoolattheageof15,havinggotfedupwithunionsastwiceI appliedforanapprenticeshipatTHCWaitangiandDBNorthlandHotel wheremanagementwerehappytotakemeonbuttheunionwouldnot allowmetoaswewereundertheAucklandumbrellaoftheunionandthey hadalonglistofpeoplewantingapprenticeshipsbutofcoursetheywere notpreparedtogoNorth.
IwalkedthestreetsofKaikohetryingtogetajobinakitchenandthelast placeItriedwasLen’sPies,thebestpiesintheNorthlandespeciallyinthe 2.5yearsIwasthere.IlefttherethinkingIneededtogetqualifications, somethingmyparentshadsaidweneededtodoifleavingschoolandI wasnotgoingtogetthemthere,howeverbeingyoungIdidnotrealizeLen waspreparingmetotakeoverthebusiness.AnywayIwasacceptedinto theRNZNandenlistedinJanuary1975.
IenjoyedtheNavylife,wasoneoftheyoungesttoqualifywithmytrade papers,sawtheworld,experienceswedonottalkaboutthesedaysand met
mybestmateataFleetwoodMacconcertatWesternSpringsin1980.She stuckwithmeafterIwasmedicallydischargedfromtheNavyafteramotor vehicleaccidentinTristramAve,NorthshorewherethedriverofthecarI wasincollidedwithapetroltankerwhichhadtherightofwayatlightswe shouldofstoppedat.NeedlesstosayIcameoffsecondbestandasweall knowwhenyougetolderwhatyoudidwhenyouwereyoungercomes backtohauntyou.IcontinuedcheffinginAucklandandinMarch1982 ,TriciaandIgotmarried.AyearlaterweboughtourhomeinWaiakeand havebeenthereeversincebringinguptwodaughters,oneson,onedog andthreecats.Whoallhaveflownthenestonewayortheother.Currently theoldestofall,adaughterlivesinDunedin,soninWellingtonand youngestdaughterinAlgiesbaywhohasouronlygrandchild,Wade,atthis stage.
SincethestartofcovidIhadtomakesomeadjustmenttomyemployment planssteppingoutintoabusinessthatwasbadlyaffectedbythe regulations.SoTriciaandIdecidedIwouldstayathomeandrenovateour home,andlastyearsheretiredandnowweareathomeplayingDarbyand Jonesstillrenovatingbutlastsummerwedidfinishpaintingtheoutsideof thehouse.
Wehavea1929ModelAFordTudorthatwassadlyneglectedasthe childrengotolderandwewerebusywithwork.TheModelApeople probablytiredofhearingthisbutitwillbeonroadsoon.Youget2feet forwardthenastepbackwitholdcarsbutatleastyoucanworkonthem. ToTricia’sdisgustIhaveahulkofamark1cortinawithpartsinshedand underhouseandshellwithrustonatrailerindrivewayanotherproject takenonforoneofthekids.
Thatshouldbemorethanenoughaboutme,anythingelseyouwillhaveto askoverThursdaymorningcoffeewhenIamthere. Donotbesurprisedifyougetaskedbymeforanitemforour magazinesandallcontributionsaregreatlyaccepted. Thankstoallcontributorstothisissue.

WecontinuetobattletheAucklandTransport–NZTAbureaucracy: AucklandTransport–NZTAWhakaKotahi–TeTupuNgatahi–Supporting Growth.Bythetimeyouarereadingthiswewillhavepresentedourcase tothethreeCommissionersatthepublichearing.Othersubmittershave alsobeenputtingtheirviewsforwardontheproposedSH1upgradeand roadsandcombinedwalkandcyclewaysfromAlbanytoSilverdale.
Wecontendthereisnoneedforanyofourpropertytobeaffected. Whattheyareproposingistoremovethenearnewwalkandcycleway runningbesideourwesternboundaryfromjustbelowthelargeNSVCC signboardandreplaceit(inthesamelocation)withanevenhigheroneso thatitwillmeetupwithabridgeoverOtehaValleyRoadandLucasCreek beyond.AssociatedwiththatistoreconstructtheMasonsRoad connectionontothewalkandcyclewaywithanewrampthatstartsonthe MasonsRoadbermaboutonethirdthewayupournorthernfield.
Wehavenotbeenprovidedwithanydetailofthebridge,possiblybecause noneexists.Howhighisthatbridgeexpectedtobe?Perhapsitisgoingto competewiththePontDuGardbuiltbytheRomansinsouthernFrance andbecomeaworldwideattraction.
Notonlywillitapparentlybehigh,itwillalsobeveryexpensive.Maybe thosefewpeoplethatusethewalkandcyclewaymightjustexitatOteha ValleyRoadfromtheexistingfacility,crossatthelightsandthengoontheir wayintheyettobebuiltnorthernsectioninstead?
Anissueisthatthecartisbeforethehorse.Thelandrequirementsare beingsetoutinstoneforanupto30yearperiodbasedonanappraisal fromoutofdateaerialphotographs.Notfromgroundon-siteinspectionsor engineeringanalysis.
Withregardtoourproperty,andseeminglymanyothersalongtheroute, thiswholeexercisehasbeenanutterwasteofeveryone’stime.Hopefully theCommissioners,whoseemtobequitelevel-headedandenquiringinto thelackofdetail,willseethefollythatthisisandreleaseusfromfurther obligations.
Wecanonlywaitandhopethatsensewillprevail.

Averysmallcontingentofcarsfromour branchwentdowntoCambridgefortheir branch’sannualDoubleFiftyRallyheldthe weekendof7-9thJune-infactjusttwo!!! (JulieCroftandGrahamDarbyinJulie’s1954 MGTFandBarbandPeteStubbsintheir1959 GalaxieSkyliner).Followingaveryleisurely mainlybackroadstriptoCambridgeonthe Friday,wewoketoamagnificent,thoughvery cool,Saturdayreadyforourrally.Thebranch wasexpectingabout50cars,buttherewereinfact68whichtheywere superhappywith!
Departingat30secondintervals(orthereabouts!!!),wedrovethrough magnificentbackroadspasttheHobbitonMovieFarm(andthebusesof tourists!),toHinuera,almosttoMatamata,Okoroire(abeautifuloldpub andhotpools),makingourlunchstopdestinationatthePutaruruTimber Museum.Itwasastunningwinter’sdaywithhardlyacloudintheskyand warmedupconsiderablyasthedayworeon.
UnfortunatelywhenwegottotheMuseum,the Galaxiedecidedtoletgomostofitsradiator fluidwhichcausedsomeconsternation,sothe Stubbsmissedtheafternoonrallywhilstwaiting fortheAAmantocomeandcheckitout.After heandPetedecidedthatthecarjustneededto benursedasitwasn’ttoooomajor,wedrove backtoCambridge-thebrandnewradiator’s smallheadertankwhichhadbeensolderedto theradiatorhadsplitGRRR.
Theafternoondrivewasjustaspleasantanditwasthenoffforafternoon tea,ourdinnerandprizegivingattheClubRooms-afabulousmealwith greatcompany,meetingnewfaces,catchingupwitholdfriendsand enjoyingthecamaraderieoftheWaikatobranch.TheGalaxiebehaved andwedroveittodinnerandallthewayhome withnoissuesotherthanmakingsurethere wasplentyofwaterintheradiator!!
Justoutofinterest,therewere11vehicles fromAucklandbranch,1fromWellsford,2 fromNorthShore,3fromBayofPlenty,1from TaupoandtherestscatteredbetweenSouth WaikatoandWaikatobranches.
AnotherveryleisurelytripbackthroughMatamata(andTHEBEST BAKERYEVER)andSH26and27beforehittingthatawfulAuckland motorwaywhichisalwayssobusy,evenonaSunday.

AtourrecentAGMthesubjectofHealthandSafetywasraisedandquite correctlyitwaspointedoutthatwehavemoretodointhisarea.
PersonalHealthandSafetyisaresponsibilitythatsitswitheveryindividual whenvisitingourclub.AsanIncorporatedSocietywedoNOThavelegal responsibilitytoensurethesafetyofmembersorvisitors.Nonethelessitis importantthateachofustakesthesafetyofourcolleaguesandvisitors seriously.WedonotwantANYinjuriesattheclub.
Therestorationworkshopsandsparesshedarehighriskareasthatrequire specificcaretobetaken.Theclubprovides,earprotectors,eyeprotectors andmaskspleaseusethemwhenappropriate.Regularhelpersinthe workshopsandsparesshedshouldalsobewearingprotectivefootwear. Pleasenoteallsafetysignage.
Theclubisfortunatetohavemanygenerousmembersandweoften receivedonationsofelectricalequipment,drills,sandersandthelike.We wouldliketotestourelectricalequipmentonaregularbasistojusthelp ensurethesafetyofourmembers.Doyouhavetheexperience,skilland equipmenttohelptestourtools?Ifyoucanhelp,thenpleasecontactany memberofthecommittee.
Finally,rememberthatHealthandSafetyisasharedresponsibilityofall members;ifyouseesomebody,notusingsafetyequipment,usingtoolsor machinesinadangerousmannerormaybejusttakinganunnecessaryrisk thenpleasetellthemorraisetheissuewithaseniormember.

A:Theyalwayscomeinclutch.
Youwillallbefamiliarwiththecertificationissuesthatwehavehad withtheWolseleythathasresultedinusdecidingtocutourlosses andsellthecar.Wellits notgettinganybetter! Arecentinspectionofthe Bedfordhasrevealedsome significantissuesthatwill needtobeaddressedprior tomovingforwards.The inspectorhasnotedthat thetwochassiswelds prettymuchinthemiddleof bothchassissiderails(the gapbetweenthecaband cranetray)areunacceptable.Hehasalsoidentifiedsomechassis pittingonthefrontright-siderailsupportingtheengineandsteering box.
Wehavebeengivenfulldetailsofhowtoweldthechassisandbeen toldthattheweldingmustbedonebyanISO9606qualifiedwelderon allfacesofthe‘C’shapedchassisrail.(photoattached).Topreparefor thisworkwewillneedtoremovethecab,backdeckandperhapsthe enginetocutoutalltracesofthepreviousweldandpreparetherails forrepair.
Theinspectorhassaidthathewillmakeadecisiononthechassis pittingafterwehavehadtheleftandrightrailsrepaired.Evenifwedo allthisworkhehasconfirmedthatwewillnotbeabletoloadthecrane andwindinggearontothebackofthetruck.
TheprojectteamlookingaftertheBedfordseethreewaysforward:
●Undertaketherepairworkasdescribed.
●Obtainagoodqualityreplacementchassisandtransferall runninggearandbodyworkacrosstothenewchassis.
●Acceptthatthevehiclewillneverberoad-worthythatwillseeout itsdaysasamuseumpiece,neverrunningonpublicroads
Both(BedfordandWolseley)oftheserecentinspectionshavecaused ustofocusontheBus,theBSAandtheSinger.Allthreeofthese vehicleshavehadthechassisinspectedandreceivedaverbal go-ahead.ThechassisInspectionsonthebuswerecompleteda companythathasnow movedawayfromtharbusiness andsowewillprobablyneedto startagain.ChassisInspections on theBSAwereverypositiveand the companyholdsthosereportsstill. Untilsuchtimeaswemanageto get ourvehicles,certified,vinnedand registeredweareatriskfrom changingregulationsand changingpersonnel.Thisriskis normalforanyrestorationproject but acommercialrestorerwillfinish theirprojectin3to4months;we mighttake3to4yearsduring whichtimewemayseeachangeinregulationsorinspectors.We havetobeawareofandmanagethatrisk.

Irishman’sRally OverKing’sBirthdayweekendJennyandItookpartin theVCCIrishman’sRun,butdoingbackupdutiesagaininourFordRanger ratherthantakingpartintheeventinaveterancar.Whatagreatweekend itwas.FridaywasatripupintoNorthCanterbury,windingourwayup throughmostlygravelroadsandafewfarmpaddocksasfarnorthasthe LakeSumnerRoad,andthenreturningthroughthePyramidValley, McDonaldDownsStationandthenbacktoRangioraaftercrossingoverthe foothillsthroughAshleyForestandLoburn.Therewereanumberof breakdownstoattendto,butwegotacoupleofcarsgoingagainwith sparepartsI’dtakenwithus(acoil,condenserandanelectricfuelpump foundnewhomes),andnobodywasleftstrandedinthemiddleofnowhere wherethecarcouldn’tbeeasilyretrievedlater.WetowedaModelAFord thathadstrippedatiminggearabout10kmtothelunchstop,buttheowner wasofferedareplacementgearthatsomeonehadwiththem,andanother personjusthappenedtobecarryingthespecialtoolrequiredforthejob anditwasreplacedinanhourandahalfonthesideoftheroadbyafellow ModelAexpertatlunchtime.Thecarstartedfirstpop,andgavenofurther troubleduringthewholeweekend.Saturday’srunstartedjustoutof SheffieldatdawnwithapumpkincannonsaluteovertheWaimakaririRiver (you’dhadtohavebeenthere…..),andthenheadedsouththroughRakaia Gorgeandtheinlandhighway72totheRangitataRiver,divertingdowna numberofsideroadstostayongravelandcrosstheoccasionalfordonthe way.AhowlingNWwindwithhorizontalraingreetedeveryonealongthis leg,butbythetimewe’dreachedtheRangitataRiverithadclearedupin timeforastunningonehourdriveintoMesopotamiaStation(westofPeel Forest)onadamp-to-wetgravelroad.Oncewegottothestationwewere wellandtrulyatthebackoftheconvoy,soweimmediatelyturnedbackto gotothefordovertheOrariRivernearPeelForesttobereadytohelp anyonegettingstuckintheriverthere.Aboutadozencarsdidgetstuck,so thetow-ropeand4WDcameinusefulextractingthemfromtheriver.Itwas easytopickthosewhowereexperiencedIrishman’sveteransandknewa thingortwoaboutwhichlinetotakeandhowtokeepwateroutofthe enginebay.Wethencarriedonthroughsomebackroads,toemergeon theGeraldinetoFairliehighwaywherewestayedonthesealtoarrivein Fairlieabout6pm.13Thenextdaywewereupearlyagain,meeting
outsidethepubinthemainstreetofFairlieat8.30am,Themainstreetand sideroadswerelinedwithdirtyvintagecars,resemblingascenefromthe late1930’s.TheplanforthedaywastomotortoBurkesPassthroughthe RollesbyValley(gravel)road,thenontoIrishman’sstationafterTekapoto arrivebyabout10.30am.Thestationownershadkindlygrantedaccessto thestationfortheday,includingalookthroughtheirmuseum(whichhas twooftheoriginalHamiltondesignedjetboatsondisplay),andthenaftera quicklunch,totheaccessroads(ormorecorrectly‘tracks’)rightthrough themiddleofthestation.Weweresoluckytheweatherwasperfectforthe day,asifithadofbeenrainingmostofthecarswouldhaveneededchains togetthroughthepaddocks.Thereweresomeveryroughpartswithsteep (luckilymostlydownhill)grades,andacoupleofdecentstreamstocrossas well.Ononeofthestreamcrossingsa1920’sSunbeamhadamajorhole punchedintothesump,butoneresourcefulparticipanthadtakenatubeof “Kneadit”withhim,andoncetheholewascleaneduphemanagedtopatch itup.Thesumpwasre-filledwithoilandthecargotbacktoFairlieand thenthenextdayreturnedtohomeinRangiora(believeitornotwithout anyoilleaks!).ThefarmtrackseventuallyjoinedontotheTekapocanal roadabout5kmfromSH8,andfromtherewemotoredbacktotheentrance tothestation,andthenbacktoFairlieonthehighway.Thelastpartofthe afternoonwasspentatStrathconanStationjusteastofFairliewherea grasskhanawasheld.Weonlyencounteredacoupleofbreakdownsonthis day,andtheownerswereabletosortthemselvesout.Thedaywas finishedoffwithaprize-givingandsupperintheFairliecommunitycentre, wheresomeveryfunnystoriesweretoldabouttheearlyIrishman’sRally days,andsomeofthemoreinteresting‘happenings’fromthisyear’sevent wererecounted.14Andyes,thereweresomeveterancarsonIrishman’s–hatsofftoJosephMcClintockandhispassengerPaulAinsworth(1914 ModelTRaceabout),andtoAllanDippiewhodrovehis1914Talbot Boat-tailalltheway.MyapologiesiftherewereothersImissed
