March 2023

A cooler few days lately and the welcome addition of a few rain showers. Autumn is bringing some clean up jobs around the garden as the leaves start to fall and I have been splitting firewood and getting it in the shed ready for the winter, perhaps others are doing the same.

What changing times we are living in. We once had an AA travelling map in our vehicles to show us where to go when off on holiday etc now they have decided not to print these anymore and people must rely on electronic aides to assist. Many people who visit the Info Centre still ask for a printed version. February meeting night there were reports on Model T’s visiting on their way to Cromwell. Often the Punt is not running unfortunately Suggestion that the Clubrooms could do with the addition of some memorabilia to display.

Paul spoke of several Model A’s damaged in the Esk Valley flooding and several entrants will not be able to make the upcoming Model A Rally.

Gore Rally reported on. Winner John & Jan Cook, 2nd Vintage Class Robin & Margaret McCall and 2nd P60 Ian & Wilma McDonald.

Wednesday Run this month participants met at the Clubrooms for a 1.30 p.m. start. 8 vehicles and 16 people journeyed through Te Houka, S.H. 1, Clifton, Waipahi Station Road through to the Mataura – Clinton highway then back to Clinton to Crossroads for some welcome refreshments. Thank you to Allison Ollerenshaw for organising this run.

Motorcycle Rally

Roger and the team ran another successful Motorcycle Rally on Saturday 11th March. The weather was fine and all went well for the 24 entrants and it was great to see them arrive at the Clubrooms looking forward to the day’s ride which took them to Clutha Valley to Tuapeka Mouth, then over the hills on the Tuapeka Lawrence Road to the junction with Highway 8 just outside Lawrence then to Beaumont for lunch. The timed section for the rally was just over 47 kilometres

An adventure for a 1929 4 door Sedan – and two travellers.

Kaye and Paul McNabb recently attended the 16th National Ford Model A Rally, held this time in Methven. The public show day was cancelled due to rain. Welcomed by farmers, but not rally attendees. The car judging was held in a large seed store, which was great, as it was pouring down. The first rally tour was through the Rakaia Gorge, Windwhistle and Hororata to Terrace Station. Next day was a visit to the Rolls Royce/Bentley workshops just out of Ashburton. You can keep your Roller, we will keep our Ford. Too scared to breathe! Our next tour was in to the Canterbury foothills, accompanied by more rain. The first stop was to some restored farm buildings at Hakatere Town, then a drive through desolate country to Lake Terrace Station. The station operators use an aircraft and a helicopter to go shopping, as the homestead is so remote. At one event, it was brought to our attention by another rally entrant that our car was used at their wedding in 1979, so a photo shoot was called for to re-enact the occasion. We come second in the rally gymkhana, and Paul got second in the men's evening wear. When the rally had ended, we went to the Opuke Thermal pools in Methven for a dip. Heated by solar panels, the pools give Methven a purpose in summer, as winter is for the ski bunnies. The car performed very well and knocked off the hills easily. Covered 850 miles, at 20 mpg.
