May 2023

Frosty mornings here again and time to have the heating on indoors. The Milton Info Centre held their Book Sale on Sunday so people were stocking up on reading for the winter days ahead.

At the Milton Museum on the afternoon of Saturday 20th May several visitors from the Southland Daimler Club enjoyed the collections and learned of the Milton Pottery and other items of history to the town.

The Diner was also catering to some Hot Rod Club enthusiasts so it was good to look outside and see the variety of vehicles parked up. On display at the Museum there is a cabinet with a variety of pieces of Milton Pottery. This little shoe is an unusual piece and very attractive in rich colours. Sitting by this is a commemorative plate and cup from Queen Victoria’s 1887 Golden Jubilee. These pieces are part of a larger collection of the late Fulton Finch.

At the April meeting we learned of the passing of Angus Katon, all stood for a moments silence. We extend our condolences Angus’s family. Memories were shared of Margaret and Angus’s years at our branch.

ANZAC afternoon several keen Moped enthusiasts took a ride from Stirling to Lovells Flat via Kaitangata with some interesting adventures along the way, stopping for a spell at the Bridge Tavern – good to see this happy group using their mopeds and enjoying great company too.

Following the business Neville showed footage of the 2010 Annual Clutha Rally where entrants stopped for a visit to David Mackie’s art works at his

Clinton home studio following the lunch stop at the local Rugby Clubrooms.

Last month’s information on a proposed Auction with the Vintage Machinery Club – this was incorrect and more details will come to hand.

Wednesday Run Report – Neville King

Chairman Robin pieced together an interesting afternoon for 24 members in the Greenfield / Clydevale area.

Two private collections were opened for us to view and Gaynor Falconer captured on her camera the people, vehicles and autumn colours at the farm. Families are working hard to preserve our history and showing it in great surroundings. The outing concluded with afternoon tea in the Greenfield Tavern. Thank you to Robin for organising that and to Paul for joining the group in his Model A.

Wednesday Run – 7th June

Meet at the Clubrooms 1.30 p.m. for the monthly outing. No confirmed route yet but will be discussed at the meeting.

June meeting A.G.M. Time for the members to think about how you can contribute to the Club. Newsletters are getting difficult for me to put together – I enjoy this each month but cannot make a good job if I do not have information to put in them.

Don’t miss the upcoming monthly meeting at your Club – the following has been organised for us to enjoy.

Neville King and Paul McNabb have been playing around with some old 8mm movie films, and have agreed to put on a short screening of some of them when the next branch meeting has ended.

These include some old clips of various car races, and items of local historical interest.

Coming Events:

May 30th Monthly Meeting 7.30 p.m.

June 7th Wednesday Run 1.30 p.m. Clubrooms

27th A.G.M. Meeting 7.30 p.m.
