At our June meeting, a motion was passed directing that “Upon joining the Taranaki Branch, a new member is to be given a VCC name badge with their name engraved on it, without charge to the new member”. Any new member should approach Kevin Fabish, on committee, to action this change to ensure the correct details are supplied.
Editors report
Hi folks, another month has slid by, only just over two months to end of year, can you believe. Following on from a busy September, with the running of a successful Rubber Duckie Rally, we have a couple of Branch events to look forward to this month.
On the 27th we have a Midweek run organized by Bryan, we will visit a sheep milking operation run by P K W, sounds pretty interesting. Then, on Sunday the 30th, we can join members of the Morris Minor club on a tour of some Fringe Festival Gardens. Details of both events on this month’s Events Calendar page
It has been decided in Committee to cancel the charity car show that was planned for November 6 in Hawera. This is disappointing, especially for the organizing team who had put in so much effort to make it happen.
Saturday the 5th November the Kaponga Primary School are holding a Classic Car Show fund raiser from 10 am to 3 pm at the school, there will be stalls etc, sounds like a good opportunity to give your classic a run in aid of a worthwhile cause.
Thank you, Beryl, for your newsy report on your time spent on the recent North Island Club Captains Tour, also the photos that you took, it was good to share some stories with a few of the entrants on Saturday as they set off home after the run, at our clubrooms over a cup of tea
Also, see Les Bognuda’s notice below regarding cars wanted. This might just be the chance to get your classic into the public eye.
Safe travels, Jim loganSET IN THE 80’S
Jack Edward is shooting a music video sometime before the end of the year. Its set in the 80’s and I’m wondering if there is any one that would be keen to have their vintage or classic family car in the video. Contact can be made via Les Bognuda 021 084 82 323, and he will pass your info onto Jack.
NORTH ISLAND CLUB CAPTAIN’S TOUR - 2022
The Tour began with a BBQ tea at the Bay of Plenty VCC Clubrooms. A chance to see who was on Tour, what they were driving and a general catchup. The next morning the Tour began in sunny weather and headed North driving through the self proclaimed Mural Capital of New Zealand (another one) Katikati. Before long we were turning right to drive through Waihi Beach, the morning tea stop for some Tourists. A further 5.5 miles took us to Waihi township and a chance to view the open cast pit from the Cornish Pump building. Interesting gold mining history in this area and in the Karangahake Gorge which we passed through on our way to Te Aroha and our lunch stop at the RSA Club. A help yourself roast was enjoyed by all, then a tour of Adrian Worsley’s workshop. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. He creates all manner of creatures from scrap metal, and his “storehouse” is a wonder to behold. From here we made our way through some back roads to a very high elevation where we turned off the road to “Gudex Reserve,” the site of the Maungakawa Sanitorium opened in 1903 for TB patients. Closed in 1921, the site has been cleared and kept as a Reserve from which, on a clear day, Mount Ruapehu and Taranaki can be seen. A very steep descent led us to our first overnight stop, Cambridge.
Day Two: After a 9.15 am pep talk (Keep left, let fast traffic through, be aware of what is behind you) you know the drill, we were treated to a visit to the Ross Bros. Museum of Big Toys for the Boys. Not only great classic cars, bikes, peddle cars and scooters, etc, there was also huge earth moving equipment ones you need a ladder to get into. An interesting morning. There was no timing on this Tour, so we made our own time through country roads passing some horse studs before finding the main highway toward Ohaupo then turning off to head for Raglan, viewing the Te Uku wind farm on the way.
Day Three: Raglan to Taumaranui. Today we left sealed roads behind for some time and found ourselves on Whaanga Rd, the iconic NZ Rally Road. Bushclad with surprising maritime vistas here and there and lovely groves of flowering Kowhai dotted with white clematis. Tuis and wood pidgeons serenaded us through this section, then to seal again through farming country heading towards Kawhia. We skirted around this harbour before heading inland to our lunch stop, the Otorohanga Club. After lunch we paid our respects by parading through town and tooting at the iconic menswear shop, Haddad’s, as the senior brother had unfortunately lost his life through a road accident a few days prior. Flowers outside the shop left by the locals almost surpassed those left for Queen Elizabeth.
The Old Te Kuiti Road took us through King Country dairy farms and into Te Kuiti, where we carried on through SH 30 to Kopaki Rd and almost to Bennydale. A right turn into Waimiha Rd meant we were now approaching the area where native timber sawmilling was once a thriving industry but sadly the villages of Waimiha and Ongarue are mere shadows of their former days. A left turn on to SH 4 soon had us at our destination for the day, Taumarunui.
Day Four: Discussions at times during the previous two days had raised the question re Kiwi Road. Do we, or don’t we? Will it be too wet? Will there be slips? Will there be dropouts?
What’s the alternative? And talk of “a nervous one” before leaving added to the tension. Overnight rain did not help either, but after a quick joke at the briefing, we headed to Ohura via SH 4 and Saddle Rd. The toilets at Ohura are great, not to be missed. We regrouped here, had a bite to eat then headed off through SH 40 on to Waitaanga Rd, then right at T into Akau Rd. We had to get our tunnel fix for the day before u turning and backtracking to Kiwi Rd. Kiwi Rd was in pretty good condition, no slips, or dropouts to speak of, just a couple of gates to be opened and closed and yes, another tunnel. From here it was a slow but interesting drive along the Moki Rd to Uruti Rd. Before too long we were back on SH 3 to proceed to Urenui for a lunch stop. Great scones there!
Moving on towards New Plymouth, we soon turned off SH 3 driving through more dairy country and also gas/condensate production facilities and a drilling rig. Another tunnel took us to Tarata Country, then to Kaimata and Ratapiko. A few more right turns, then a left which took us to Tariki and the busy SH 3. What a contrast after the quiet country roads, so noticeable in an open car.
By now home was calling, to we turned down the offer of afternoon tea at Dudley Hall and headed to New Plymouth, passing through Inglewood and Egmont Village.
Dinner at Plymouth International topped off a great 4 days. Many thanks to Kaaren Smylie and Alistair Jones for such an enjoyable tour

THE HEARING AID
An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to fit a set of hearing aids that improved his hearing 100%. The gentleman went back a month later and the doctor said
“Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again”. The gentleman replied, “Oh, I haven’t told them yet. I just sit around listening to their conversations.
I’ve changed my will three times!”
