Committee Chatter for Topical Torque

Hello Folks

We have had a busy month of February and it looks like it will be just as busy in March. The 50th Celebration Rally of the Waitara Mini Vin Tour was held on the 26th of February with a very good attendance of 45 entrants. The weather held fine and everyone rally enjoyed the activities that were put on for them. Congratulations to Greg and Denise Carter for winning the rally driving their 1936 Chevrolet car. This was pretty special for these new members as it was the first time they had participated in the Mini Vin tour.

All 96 of the entrants really enjoyed the train trip up to Lepperton and return between the Morning and Afternoon rally sections.

The club supported the Fossil Fuels farm machinery show in Hawera over the first weekend in March and a special thank you to all members who helped park all the cars over the two days of the event. It was a job well done and profitable for our club collecting the $2 parking donation.

Thank You Jim Logan for arranging our members to help. The event was well run and the displays were very well put together with the huge Black Beauty Traction Engine all stoked up and giving plenty of people a ride in the specially built trailer. The scones that were made on site cooked in an old coal range that was all fired up and operational was a real draw card. There were very good crowds on both days.

Another Maunga Moana Rally is getting very close now and we urge you to get your entry in as soon as you can cause the rally is on the 24/25th March. Planning is well underway. Get your entry to the rally Secretary Rob Thomson. If you do not want to rally but want to attend the social side of the rally you are most welcome to come on the Friday and Saturday social/dinner nights at the Plymouth Hotel, but you must send in payment to Rob and let him know you are coming. The more the merrier so please give this urgent consideration.

Our Noggin and Natter night in March will have Harry Duynhoven as our guest speaker who will be talking to us as the President for the Federation of Motoring Clubs about the anticipated 12 month Warrant of Fitness for our over 40-year-old vehicles. So, hope to see a good attendance.

Remember its Maunga Moana Month. Safe Motoring

EDITORS REPORT

Well, been a busy few weeks, with the Mini Vin Rally now behind us and it was a great day out in Waitara, then a big thank you to members who turned up in Hawera last weekend for the Fossil Fuelled Extravaganza. Apart from an early morning downpour on Saturday, the rest of the weekend weather was splendid, ideal for haymaking displays and all the other outside activities that were on display there.

Treasurer Rob, reports that the club funds received a welcome injection from the car parking gate, which we ran for both days. Two weekends till our Maunga Moana, get your entry in by the 15th and help make it a memorable event.

That’s all, Jim

BRANCH NEWS

Thank You To all Entrants that attended the 50th Waitara Mini Vin Tour. What a great day we all had, and I hope you all enjoyed the program that was put together for you with a full day of activities with 45 entries motoring on two road rallies and in between having a train ride within walking distance of the venue followed by a BBQ lunch finishing with a afternoon tea.

Many thanks to all who brought afternoon tea and a very big special thank you to Rose Cox who made the beautiful 50th Celebration Fruit cake. It truly made the day for me to see everyone enjoying themselves.

Thank you to Rob Thomson for all your help and to Peter Croot who timed the event and produced the morning results on to the display TV at the Club and then the afternoon and final results with the placings shown.

Thank you to all my family members including my son Alexander who arranged the starting of the road rallies and sponsored a prize. And special thanks to Rhonda McFarlane who arranged the BBQ Lunch.

Congratulations to Greg and Denise Carter for winning this year’s event and to Willie Woods second placing and third Robert Tudor with Peter Hutton first motor cycle.

Many many Thanks Everyone. Let’s do number 51 next year.

Cheers

Taranaki Vintage Machinery Club event, “FOSSIL FUELED EXTRAVAGANZA”

HAWERA 4TH & 5TH MARCH 2023

What an event it was, and two sun drenched days added the ‘icing to the cake’. Vintage and classic cars, commercial vehicles older and new, tractors in all shapes and sizes old and young, big and small, farm implements of by-gone eras, a grand selection of stationary engines of all sizes, some actually driving farm machinery of similar age like a vertical draw saw actually cutting small logs, and the chaff cutter. To watch an old horizontal stationary engine with all its valve gear, governor mechanism and linkage, and its means of ignition, all working, exposed with liberal amounts of oil lubricating (and) preserving these power points of the past. My god, Work Safe would have had a field day in those times.

A Fair Ground organ on display and playing I found totally fascinating.

Amongst the display of vehicles was the Dennis Fire Engine previously owned by my late Aunt, Sue Matthews (an original founding committee member of the Taranaki Branch) in its now restored glory thanks to the Hawera Fire Brigade team who are now entrusted with the ‘beast’. My memory of taking it to a Piopio typical farming area gala day of the period, past member Jack Castle with me to do a share of driving, and ‘driving the siren’ all the way through the Awakino Gorge. Those were the days when the branch had its quota of ‘likely lads’. Sue and the Dennis partook of the 1966 Haast International Rally, crank handle start, and no such thing as power steering.

The Taranaki Machinery Club, who organised this fossil fuel event, gave our branch the opportunity to fund raise by organising and manning the parking of the general public to this event, suggesting we charge a gold coin for entry. We took up the challenge with Jim Logan organising the ‘manpower’ for the two days. The offers of help were not overly generous but suffice to say we managed, in fact, quite well.

Thanks to Jim who co-ordinated the team of Greg Carter, Brendhan Feek, Malcolm Harding, Mike Kruse, John Muter, Rob Gudopp, Colin Johnston, and myself over the two days. The result, over a grand banked.

To the Parking Team, thank you.
