At our June meeting, a motion was passed directing that “Upon joining the Taranaki Branch, a new member is to be given a VCC name badge with their name engraved on it, without charge to the new member”. Any new member should approach Kevin Fabish, on committee, to action this change to ensure the correct details are supplied.

COMMITTEE CHATTER

Hello members. I hope you have been out and about in your vehicles as we have had some pretty good summer weather over the last few weeks.

There are vehicles required for the annual Xmas parades around our district starting with the New Plymouth parade date to be confirmed and Bell Block on 3rd Dec at 3.00pm, Waitara on Sat 10th Dec at 10.00am, Inglewood on Sun 11th Dec at 12.00pm and no doubt down Stratford , Kaponga and Hawera will have parades. Please support these when you can as this is a good way to show our club will support our communities.

A quiz night was held at the last Noggin and Natter which was organized by Trevor Cole. It was a very entertaining night and enjoyed by all who attended. Thank You Trevor for putting some time into arranging the questions. Members really appreciated your effort for our club night.

We have had a new member join our branch recently and we warmly welcome Peter George from Bell Block who owns a 1922 Stanley Steamer Tourer. I understand that some of our members joined the Morris Minor Car Club and visited six Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival Gardens. It is a great way to view these gardens and it was reported that all enjoyed the run and the gardens.

The Mid week run organised by Bryan Morris took members who were able to go, to see the new Sheep milking venture by PKW on his old farm. Could someone who went to this farm outing please send a write up of the visit as by all accounts it was very interesting venture.

The annual Combined Motoring Clubs BBQ is to be held at the clubrooms on Sunday December 4th. As we are not able to loan the Toyota BBQ that we had in previous years could some members help by bringing their BBQs

Patrick Stieller and I (Dodge Coupe) along with Kevin and Christine Fabish (Essex Coupe), Danny and Sue Pattinson (Essex Sedan), Lois and Bob Butchart (Nash Tourer) and Danny and Sharyn Hurley (Dodge Sedan) all joined 7 other entrants at Blenheim and attended the Mt Cook Rally hosted by the South Canterbury Branch in the South Island. Also, Beryl and Jim Watson (Chrysler Roadster) from our branch was in attendance.

Patrick and Myself and Danny and Sharyn in our Dodges joined the Hudson, Essex, Terraplane, incorporating Nash and Rambler Club on their tour to this event ending up after at Nelson for their clubs 50th AGM This enthusiastic club was formed in 1972 at the Nelson International Vintage Car Rally. What a fantastic time we had driving to the Mt Cook Rally and the AGM as we were not only driving the main arterial routes but went on country roads through metal dusty farm roads with gates to open and close down in the valleys and up into the hills and went through a number of fords all making this tour a very interesting and exciting way to see amazing scenery that one would not normally see. Mt Cook was

standing proud in all its glory, and we had clear views of the all the mountain ranges as the weather was clear and fine. Just to add to it all the night before we travelled over the Lewis Pass from Methven it snowed and what a great sight that was at the top of the Lewis pass. We stopped to have lunch and saw the snow all around then carried onto Greymouth.

We were also joined by Canadian Karl and son Paul Hanson a past member of our branch who joined in 1966 and returned to Canada in 1972. We older members of the branch will remember Karl who owned a 1929 Hudson Sedan and Essex motor cars of which he took back to his home on Vancouver Island in Canada and Paul now owns the Hudson Sedan. Karl was able to visit some older members of the club as he came through Taranaki on his way to participate in the Mt Cook rally and AGM as he was loaned a Hudson Railton car owned by Phil Kidd from the Wellington branch.

Patrick and I won the Owen Jones Memorial Trophy for the Veteran of Vintage Vehicle Furthest Distance Driven to the rally.

All of us Taranaki entrants travelled just over 1800 miles (2896.3 kms) on this tour and our vintage cars all returned home safely driving on Monday 31st October from the Bluebridge Ferry in Wellington at 12.00pm and arriving home at 7.30pm. Many thanks to all who went for their camaraderie and the Vintage motoring that we all enjoyed at its best.

We are still trying to find the leak in the clubrooms roof. We need to get this sorted before our ceiling gets damaged. We are also trying to get Whaka Kohati to fix our gateway entrance off state highway 3A as it is unacceptable to have to drive through large potholes filled with water to get onto our clubroom’s property. It is becoming dangerous for members turning into the clubrooms from both North and South approaches

So, with all this fine, warm and sunny weather that is coming let’s get out and about in our vehicles and enjoy the motoring before the petrol price goes up. Cheers....... safe motoring.........Keep to the Left......watch out for potholes... Enjoy....Take Care.

2022 Garden Festival Run

The morning of the run a half dozen cars and passengers set off from the Hillsborough Hall towards the first of the six gardens we were to visit. Lepperton was our first stop, where we were joined by another six cars, members of the Morris Minor Club. This was an amazing garden, all on a town sized section, lots of plants, seeds for sale. Next garden was a short drive away on Te Arei Rd East, a large rural garden, big trees, and being a plant nursery, lots of lovely plants to buy. Our third garden was another short drive to Kairau Rd West, I have been to this garden before but am still amazed with it now with new owners who have kept it looking lovely, this was our lunch stop. Following lunch, we were off to our next stop on Airport Drive, Bell Block, another big garden and avo’ orchard, also with some very healthy plants for sale and some lovely avo’s. Garden 5 was on Paraite Rd, a shop with home grown produce was part of this garden. Our final garden was just round the corner from Garden 5. This garden was set around an old homestead with an amazing view across an adjacent gully, we didn’t stay long enough to sample the jam and cream scones, but they looked delicious.

Thanks to Alie and Brian for your time and effort in making our day so enjoyable.

From the Editor

Our October midweek run took, us to the Normanby Hall where we were met by Bryan Morris for a pre run briefing. We were joined by a good group of members, twelve cars and their passengers. After a short circular drive, we arrived at our destination, the farm run for the P K W corporation (Parininihi ki Waitotara). The farm forms part of the twenty thousand hectares which P K W manage for its 10,000 plus shareholders. Currently running 1600 milking sheep, plus replacements, the sheep are milked twice a day through a 36 per side herringbone shed, that means 72 sheep being milked about every 5 minutes. Alongside the milking shed has been built an open sided wintering barn, only 2,400 sq metres in area. (You could store a lot of cars in there!!)

The farm manager was very forthcoming with info’ about the operation, telling us that the milk is collected twice a week by tanker and transported to a processing plant in the Waikato where it is dried and formulated into products mainly going to Asia as baby food, I think. One interesting fact was that sheep milk protein is naturally of the A2 variety, which is an important factor in its appeal to Asian consumers.

Thanks, Bryan, for a very interesting run and I am sure you are pleased at the way part of your farm is being put to good use. Thanks also to all the members who turned up to make the day a success.

That’s all for now, safe travels, Jim Logan
