Chairmans Chatter for Topical Torque Hello Folks We all have different things that we collect and it’s great that our members can share their passions with not only their motor vehicles that we seem to concentrate on but to see and hear about the diversity of collections like that of Patrick Adams who brought along some of his amazing collections of radios and explained how he was able to build up the collection and how he can restore them back to their day when they were brand new. Patrick gave us some idea of how he has come to collect up radios that are advertised through trade me and by word of mouth and the valuations of some of the radios on display was worth looking in the back of the shed to see if one had been put there and forgotten about. Thank you, Patrick, for bringing a part of you collection for us to see and hear about your passion of radios. We also heard from the club’s registrar Neil Beckenham who gave us a two-hour update on the clubs VIC/DOMS application procedure. This was well attended by members and quite a few questions were asked and answered giving as a better understanding of why we all need to fill in the details and apply for the vehicle identification certificate which is compulsory for attending National and International rally’s and also officially dates your vehicle and registers it within the National clubs’ records. This late afternoon meeting gave the members an opportunity to stay on at the clubrooms and partake in a fish and chip meal and stay on for the Noggin and Natter night meeting. Nyall and Joylene Simkin have confirmed their attendance at the Posh Picnic with their two Rolls Royce’s that is to be held on January 21st next year at the Wind Wand Grassed area in support for the Cancer Society and our support for the National Cancer Appeal that some club branches throughout New Zealand held in August. please keep this date free for this event. You will see a notice elsewhere in this newsletter about the Silent Auction that will be running over the next three months. This is some tools and interesting parts and items from Des Cornwall’s shed. A big thank you to Lynette and Harvey for donating these parts and books that are available at the clubrooms for a donation to club funds. The silent auction gives you an opportunity to look and put your bid in to the box and if you are the highest bidder at the December Noggin and natter you will win that auction. It’s good to see that some members attended the Journey Through Time rally held recently in Taumarunui. It’s time to get out and about in you vehicles. There is the Garden Festival run and the Potters Paddock Gymkana coming up so let’s have some fun. So keep the passion ……….. get out and about………check out the parts auctions…… keep to the left and enjoy your outings. Cheers Chairman Colin.

BRANCH NEWS We are intending to run a Silent Auction over the next few months, for a collection of workshop items kindly donated to the Branch by long-time member Des Cornwall. These items will be on display at our clubrooms, so come along to our club nights and register your interest. All funds raised will be going towards the Branch. Thank you, Des, for your support, much appreciated.

We are also planning a fund raiser for the Cancer Society on January 21. This will be in the form of a Posh Picnic event for all our members to attend. It will be held on the grassed reserve at the Wind wand, further details to follow.

Taranaki VCC Garden Festival Run Sunday 29th October. {see calendar page for details}

Polo shirts with our Branch logo are still available, $36 each in various colours. NOTE that Rob Thomson is now the go-to person for these.

EDITORS REPORT Spring has sprung, if current topsy turvy weather can be believed. That means Summer can’t be far away, right? Time to shake off those winter blues and get out and enjoy our hobby. Next event will be our Garden Run, see details on our Calendar page. In November we are having our Potters Paddock event, at a new location, the Dudley Road Hall on Bedford Rd, just off Upper Dudley Rd. To see you at one of these upcoming events soon. Jim Logan

The Breakfast Run Thanks to everyone who turned out on a brisk Sunday morning for the Breakfast Run especially those who drove the extra miles from Hawera. Nine cars took part and everyone finished the course in good time with twenty-one sitting down to an enjoyable breakfast at the Autolodge. So, despite three teams getting all the correct answers, Rob and Helen Stenning were the lucky winners of the Breakfast Run Trophy, well done them. A view of Taranaki Maunga on the Breakfast Run last month. Thanks, Danny and Sue.

SILENT AUCTION. The family of Des Cornwall, in finalising the disposal of his vehicle collecon, have, very generously, passed on to the Branch workshop tools, vehicle parts, vehicle manuals, and books with the suggeson they be sold with the proceeds being used to supplement the Branch Funds. The selecon of automove manuals will be retained for the Branch Library, with the other items being ‘put up for sale’. The Branch Commitee have decided a SILENT AUCTION will be held to dispose of a selecon of the items, the format of which will be: * To have all auction items on display for the next three Noggin and Natters, that is October, November, and December 2023. * All the items for auction will be numbered. * Bids are to be made on the chit supplied, with final bids to be made by 8.00pm of the evening of our December Noggin and Natter. he large assortment of books are available to purchase by donaon only, they are not included in the Silent Aucon. Rob T, Secretary.

A TECHNICAL TEASER At our recent Nog N Nater evening we were treated to a brain teaser demonstraon by Albie Gorge who set up a Villiers engine outside the parts shed. We all were wondering just what he was up to when he put a steel stake into the ground on one side and a wooden stake with a long-insulated wire from the spark plug threaded through it. He then proceeded to spread the individual wire end strands into a fan like patern poking out into midair. Interesng we thought but to what purpose? Making sure we were all out of range from the starng rope, Albie then started the engine and once running sweetly disconnected the high-tension spark plug lead and connected it to the metal stake. So, there was no longer any current from the magneto to the spark plug but the engine connued to run. So how did the high-tension spark now get from the magneto to the spark plug via the stake in the ground to the plug? Bearing in mind that the wooden stake is naturally insulated and the ends of the insulated cable from the spark plug are 1 meter above the ground? We didn’t know. Albie said he didn’t know but I’m not certain he didn’t. Ken Maul offered that it only works with that parcular Villiers engine. ( see next page ). Thanks Mark! – ED.
