Chairman’s Report

Eric Foley Chairman’s Report for July 2022 I have no doubt the current cold weather has deterred many of you from tackling the outdoor chores and, no doubt, chores in the garage. I am pecking this message out at a time that the Met Service assures me it is 6 degrees Celsius outside. Eek! That is not really conducive to doing anything but staying near a heater. Despite the fact that some days are decidedly “fresh,” there is still a good turnout at The Hub for breakfast on the first Sunday of the month. Just remember that it is $15.00 for eggs anyway plus one option ( bacon or hash browns or whatever) plus a coffee.

The Hobby Expo on 16th and 17th July proved to be a useful exercise in regard to getting our cars in front of the public. The theme this year was cars manufactured in Australia and New Zealand, and I would like to thank those of you that put your cars forward for display. Regrettably, there was some panel damage inflicted on Heather Duncan’s Valiant – most likely by the adjacent disaffected stall holders. Heather is rightly annoyed, and Owen is figuring out how to get the damage fixed without affecting the original paintwork. Our display was overseen by teams of 2 or 3 working a series of shifts over the weekend. There was considerable interest shown, and we hope to get several new members as a result. AUGUST 2022

Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

A few days after this event, the club night Pot Luck meal saw a crowd of over 40 participants. There was a very interesting range of main options along with a good range of desserts. I have no doubt that all of the participants departed replete. The members who beavered away in the kitchen preparing food or washing dishes deserve our thanks. The branch’s financial situation is currently in a good position. However, we have just learned that the Church of Christ group have elected to take their congregation elsewhere. This is very disappointing and will leave a significant hole of several hundred dollars in our monthly income. The committee will do their utmost to address this shortfall and will discuss options at our next committee meeting. Several of our members are putting in a lot of work in developing advertising for the upcoming Daffodil Run for Cancer on Sunday 21st August. With support from local businesses, it is intended to have substantial newspaper advertisement along the lines of last year’s ad. Hopefully, it will be a fine day, and I have no doubt that the event will be well supported by our members. Anyone can participate in the run, and the aim is to exceed last year’s $800+ contribution to the Cancer Society. Just remember that funds raised in Taupo stay in Taupo to support those affected by this life-changing disease. On that note, I wish you all safe travels. Eric

Captain’s Report

Owen Duncan Captain’s Report for July 2022 Club activities start this month with breakfast at The Hub at 8.30 am on Sunday 7th August. As we have experienced good attendance in the past, don’t forget to give me a call to book for you before 3.00 pm Friday 5th August. This will ensure The Hub have enough staff working in the morning to cater for us. Now that there’s a total ban on cars at the lakefront on Roberts Reserve, some of the Hot Rod and Classic Car Club members turn up to join us out at the Hub. They are most welcome, and by all accounts, those who turned up enjoyed our company. On Wednesday 10th August Barry Hoffman has made arrangements for the Petrolheads Coffee and Cars to call on the Tipsy Trout at Kinloch with a 10.00 am start. Come and join us for this enjoyable morning get-together. Our club night is also on 10th August at 7.30 pm. We have Peter Lockie presenting on St Johns and the services they provide. I’m sure this will be of great interest to all members. Do you know where the nearest defibrillator is? Come and find out. Sunday 21st August is our annual Daffodil Day run for the Taupo Cancer Society. We will start the day with a show ‘n shine at 10.30 am at the Club Rooms, where members can make a donation to the Cancer Society, who will be with us to hand out stickers and pins. Invite your family and friends as any car, truck, or motorbike are welcome. The usual donation is $10.00 per vehicle. A short run through town will be undertaken to your favourite coffee house or restaurant. It would be nice to support the sponsors who are advertising in our press release – Kefi, The Hub, and Feast at the Airport.

If you have not had your club car out lately, fire it up because in the next couple of months, we have some great events sorted for your enjoyment. The next movie night has been partially sorted. The movie chosen is ‘Mrs Harris Goes to Paris’ and is probably more inclined to be suited for the ladies, but gents are more than welcome. The dates this is to be screened at the cinema are yet to be announced, so keep an eye out for your email notification. So that’s it from me, drive safe and stay safe. Owen

John Godfrey – A Tale of Two Javelins by Murray Stanley

John Godfrey had already driven 32 different types of cars before getting his licence at the age of 16. Given this early start as a car enthusiast, it is somewhat surprising that it took him so long to get into classic and vintage cars. After 28 years as a banker and then another 20 as a happy tour bus driver (after being made redundant by the bank), freshly retired John was at a loose end and looking for a new interest. In 2010, a neighbour convinced him to come along to the Jowett Car Club in Auckland, and his petrol-head interest was re-kindled. Before long, a club contact offered him a deal too good to pass up – a 1952 Jowett Javelin for the AUGUST 2022

grand sum of $200 – although it “needed a little work.” And so John’s Javelin story began – but the Jowett story itself goes back much further. Jowett Cars manufactured light vehicles in Bradford, Yorkshire, from 1906 to 1954. The vehicle Jowett was most dependent on for its business over the years was the Bradford van, a 1946 rework of a 1932 design that nevertheless found 38,000 buyers in the UK and around the world. The Javelin was the last model produced by the company and was a revelation when it was launched in 1947. Compared to most of the offerings from car makers at the time, the Javelin showed the way of the future for the war-weary British motorist. Among its many innovative features were its fastback shape and the fact that it was the first British car with a curved windscreen. But what made the Javelin special was a lot more than its windscreen and its shape.

The car was designed during World war II - the brainchild of one man, Gerald Palmer, whose considerable engineering skills enabled him to design the entire car, engine included. He wanted an aerodynamic car with plenty of passenger space. It was said that there should be enough room in the back seat for three men to sit comfortably with their top hats on! The roomy cabin was achieved by mounting

the Javelin’s 1.5 litre flat four horizontally-opposed boxer engine well forward and low – so low that the engine is mounted beneath the radiator. Unlike most cars of that period which had live axles and cart springs, the Javelin had torsion bar suspension on each corner to give excellent road holding. The top speed of 80mph was remarkable for a 1.5-litre engine producing 50 BHP and was better than many other cars with larger engines. It was essentially an executive car with performance car pretensions. Competition successes included the 1949 Monte Carlo rally, the Spa 24-Hour Race, the 1952 International RAC Rally, and the 1953 International Tulip Rally.

Given these credentials, John was convinced that the $200 Javelin was the project for him, and so he joined the Jowett Car Club. The club was formed in 1923 and claims to be the oldest one-make car club in the world. John says that it is a great club and is able to provide members with a range of parts and lots of experienced advice. The club facilities even include a vehicle hoist. The help he received from other club members was invaluable in bringing the old Javelin back to life. It took AUGUST 2022

13

Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

John and his friends about six months of club night workshop sessions to complete the necessary work. Once the work was done, John used that car for about five years, but he was never really satisfied with the standard of the restoration. Eventually, the car disgraced itself by breaking down in the South Island on the way to a Jowett Club Rally. It needed to come home on the back of a vehicle recovery truck (an ignominy known to many old car fans), and John knew that it had to go. So he sold it and replaced it with a Rover P4 (which is now for sale if anyone is interested). However, a Jowett addiction is an itch that never goes away. After a couple of years of being without a Javelin, a friend gave him the inside word about a 1951 Deluxe model in really good condition that was available in Rangiora. An excited John purchased it sight unseen and immediately set off on an InterCity Bus to go down south and pick it up. That Javelin turned out to be a much better car than his earlier one. It was originally shipped new to Australia in 1951 and then re-exported to NZ in 1954. An earlier owner had already done a nice job restoring it in the 1970s to a standard good enough to win several Concours events. With just attention to normal routine maintenance, it has proven to be a good runner ever since John drove it back up to Taupo in 2020.

14

AUGUST 2022

Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque

If given a choice to have his dream vintage car, John says that he would choose a Mark 2 Zephyr. He recalls that his father progressively owned all of the Zephyr models from the Mk1 through to the Mk4, but John’s nostalgic favourite was always the Mk2. Interestingly, when the Javelin was released, it was aimed at a more upmarket segment than the early Zephyrs. Back in those days, a new Javelin in NZ was £1,250 (provided you had overseas funds), whereas a Zephyr was a much cheaper proposition at just £950. COVID restrictions have limited opportunities for him to use the Javelin over the past couple of years, but John has plans for next year. His ambition now is to make another attempt to go to the South Island Jowett Club Rally in Murchison - and he is confident that his new Javelin will make it this time.

Car Badge of the Month: Holden

by George Holliday

AUGUST 2022

19

Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

The Badge The Holden logo features a lion holding a stone. This image is based on the plot of an ancient fable that tells how people invented the wheel after seeing lions rolling on stones.

History James Alexander Holden immigrated to Australia from the British city of Walsall. Having arrived there in 1852, he opened a saddle and saddle workshop in Adelaide four years later. In 1879, the son of the founder, Henry James Holden, joined the family business. In 1885, the German H. A. Frost became a partner in the business, and later the company was named Holden & Frost Ltd. Many years later (in 1905), James’ grandson, Edward Holden, took up the job. He started the active development of the company and took on various orders, including the repair of car upholstery. Then the young industrialist began to re-equip the outdated chassis, install bodies, grind, and paint them. In 1917, the requirements of the war period forced the enterprise to switch completely to the manufacture of motor bodies. To do this, in 1919, Henry James Holden opened a new company and registered it as Holden’s Motor Body Builders Ltd. The company specialized in bodywork for a long time, building three factories for this, first in Adelaide, then in Geelong, and Woodville. As a result, it has become the exclusive bodywork supplier for General Motors. They were suitable platforms for a wide range of world-famous car brands. In 1926, an expanded structure of the Australian enterprise General Motors Limited appeared with production workshops in many continental cities. Only the Woodville plant, which produced body parts and cars, remained independent. In 1931, Holden’s Motor Body Builders Ltd merged with General Motors (Australia) Pty Ltd, which gave rise to General Motors-Holden Ltd. Then there were many more difficult transformations until, in the 2010s, production was shaken by the falling Australian dollar, and it became unprofitable. In the fall of 2017, the Elizabeth plant was closed, and the Holden Commodore was discontinued. In the winter of 2020, General Motors Corporation announced that by the beginning of 2021, Holden was completely liquidated. GM Specialty Vehicles appeared instead. Its tasks include the supply of Chevrolet Silverado and

The Holden Monaro is a rear-wheel drive coupé manufactured by General Motors Holden in Australia from 1968 to 1975 and later reintroduced from 2001 to 2005. It was also manufactured as a 4-door sedan from 1973 to 1977. Three generations of the Monaro coupe have been produced, the first covering the HK, HT, and HG series from 1968 to 1971, the second covering the HQ and HJ series from 1971 to 1975, and the third covering the V2 and VZ series from 2001 to 2005. The HT Monaro GTS350 was successful in Series Production racing. The Holden Dealer Team was formed in 1969 by longtime Ford Works Team boss Harry Firth with the team using the GTS350 in competition. Peter Brock made his debut at Bathurst in the 1969 Hardie-Ferodo 500 in a Holden HT Monaro GTS 350 alongside Des West, with the pair finishing third behind their winning HDT teammates Colin Bond and Tony Roberts. Brock won the Bathurst 500 for the first time in 1972 (the last year the race was run over 500 miles and the last year in which driving solo was permitted).
