The committee meeting, which was scheduled for the following Monday, had to be postponed also for health reasons. It is that time of the year with COVID and influenza floating around.

The Daffodil Rally for Cancer on Sunday 21st, saw a good representation of club vehicles lined up in the car park. Members mingled and chatted for an hour or so before drizzle arrived and scared off some of the participants. However, our efforts raised $795 for the Taupo Branch of the Cancer Society. This money will

Regrettably, I (along with several of my colleagues) missed Peter’s presentation due to poor health, which was a little ironic.

The past week or so has probably been the busiest period on the club calendar for quite some time. Club night saw a presentation from one of our members, Peter Lockie, who is an important part of St John’s ambulance service here in Taupo. Peter gave a very interesting address about St John’s, which was appreciated by those in attendance.

be spent locally supporting the good work that the Society and its staff do in our community. The advertising that was done in the Weekender resulted in a small surplus, and the committee decided to top this surplus up and make a donation of $100 to the Society. The lack of representation from the Classic Car Club and the hot rod fraternity resulted in a lower income than the last event. Hopefully, we can encourage their participation next year. One thing that did become apparent was that the departure of vehicles and the subsequent proposed parade route need to be much better controlled next year. This part of the day did not go quite as well as we had hoped. Huge thanks to Owen for driving the advertising campaign and keeping the day flowing.

Eric

The following day, Monday 22nd, saw about a number of willing members deliver 80 or so bundles of pre-ordered daffodils to various business premises around town. This task was undertaken in the early afternoon, was completed promptly, and was followed by a cuppa and a chat back at the club rooms. A big thank you to Neil Chave for coordinating this process. Neil has willingly undertaken this job for several years now, and it all goes like clockwork. I would also take this opportunity to mention that a couple of our members are in Rotorua Hospital at the time of writing. Brian Healey was admitted to hospital after collapsing, and I do not know his condition. The other member, Noel Henderson, has been quite poorly but is due to be discharged and return home. Do your best to stay healthy folks!

Thank you to everyone who supported the recent Daffodil Run to raise funds for the local Cancer Society. As Eric has reported, it was pleasing to see we raised much the same as last year, even though we had fewer vehicles. Great work We’veeveryone.hadenough rain for now, so let’s hope we can hold club events on sunny days, starting with Breakfast at The Hub on Sunday, 4th September at 8.30 am. You should also remember that this is Father’s Day. Good numbers are enjoying this outing so don’t forget to ring me for your booking by lunchtime Friday 3rd September if you can. On Wednesday the 12th starts with the Petrolheads Coffee ‘n Cars. This month we go to The Hub for our morning tea with a 10.00 am start. For any further particulars, give Barry Hoffman a ring or text on 027 443 5479. Club night is on the same day with a presentation from Cory Wynne or one of his project management colleagues from Contact Energy, who will give us an overview of the Tauhara Power Station development programme. This starts at 7.30 pm at the Clubrooms and should be an interesting evening followed by Q&A and a cuppa. I hope you can support us with your attendance. Ladies welcome.

Now for the club run on Sunday 18th September. This is time to dust off the cobwebs and bust the boredom and join us for the annual Brass Monkey Run.

Heather and I have put together a trip out and about Taupo with a few teaser questions, along with a mystery destination for dinner. Yes, we do have to have some questions because you will be competing for the Club’s prestigious Brass Monkey trophy. Early indications are that we will assemble at the clubrooms around 3.00 pm for a 3.30 pm departure. This may change, but we will be in contact with you by email with further details. The committee will also contact you to get numbers for the dinner booking. Dinner will be around 5.30 pm, and if you cannot make the run but want to join us for dinner, please contact me so I can book you a seat. There is a range of prices from around $10.00 upwards, but the price depends entirely upon what you order. It is not expensive.

Check out the attached photo. I spotted these two old cars getting their WOF’s the other day. The white one is a 1959 Austin A35 Countryman, one owner only. The blue one is a 1947 Morris Series E, which I think may belong to a club Here’smember.another date to put in your diary. Sunday, 30th October, is the Annual Rotorua Lakefront Car Show on the Rotorua Village Green. More about that next month as we could have a day out and travel in convoy.

Talking about ladies, the next movie we plan to see (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) is coming to Starlight Cinema around October, we think.

Unfortunately, due to family commitments, I have had to shelve the Club Captains run in January 2023 as I will be unavailable. I may look at alternative dates for a Sotrip.that’s it from me, drive safe and stay safe.

Rodney Hutchison’s Birthday Bentley

He initially thought about getting a 1953 R Type (which is essentially a largerboot version of the Mk VI that he saw in Greymouth), but then he encountered a “Derby Bentley” in Ashburton in 2011 and knew that was the car for him. Rodney tried to buy it, but sadly the owner was not prepared to part with it.

by Murray Stanley

SEPTEMBER 2022 11 Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque

Rodney Hutchison’s 60th birthday present was a 1934 3½ litre Bentley. It’s a present that would be the envy of any classic car enthusiast, and it’s neither here nor there that he had to buy the present himself.

Rodney is a retired geotechnical engineer who has recently moved to Taupo. He is still a member of the North Shore VCC – but is also a friend of the Taupo club. His interest in Bentleys stems from a family holiday in 1969 when he encountered a Mark VI Bentley at a Greymouth camping ground. That was the start of a dream that took until 2013 to realise. During the intervening years, he worked in many countries around the world as his geotechnical career developed, but the Bentley dream never faded.

Given his disappointment at not being able to acquire the Bentley from Ashburton, Rodney then began an international search for a similar car. One initially turned up in Cheshire, England but was deemed unsuitable after an inspection by a contact from the UK Bentley Drivers Club. That same contact (a helpful gentleman that Rodney has not yet met) then advised him of another Derby Bentley for sale in Stuttgart, Germany. That car was a 3½ litre with a Park Ward body that

Derby Bentleys are notable in they were the first Bentleys produced after RollsRoyce had acquired the assets of Bentley Motors from the receiver in 1931. They are known as Derby Bentleys because they were all built at the Rolls-Royce factory in Derby rather than at the original Bentley works in Cricklewood. The Derby Bentleys had considerably more powerful engines (3½ litres, or later, 4½ litres) than their Rolls-Royce equivalents but also had an excellent lower and lighter chassis. Thus the Derby Bentleys enjoyed all the benefits of the quality RollsRoyce engineering together with the sporting heritage of Bentley (which included five victories at Le Mans). These Bentleys are very different from either the earlier Cricklewood Bentleys or the small horsepower Rolls-Royce. Rodney’s opinion (shared by W.O. Bentley) is that they are better than both!

SEPTEMBER 202212 Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

The chassis and engines were built in Derby and then delivered to coachbuilders for a body to be built to each customer’s specifications. Many are outstandingly beautiful and often unique examples from firms such as Barker, Freestone & Webb, J. Gurney Nutting, Mann Egerton, Mulliner, Park Ward, Thrupp & Maberly, James Young, Vanden Plas, Vanvooren and Erdmann & Rossi.

was originally purchased in 1934 by Colonel Hugh Campbell, whose family continued to own it until 1985. It then passed through another three owners until being purchased by a German gentleman who only ever drove it a total of 35 miles!

Rodney says that the international shipping to get the car from Stuttgart to NZ was a breeze. Although Auckland was his home, in 2013, he was spending much of his time working in Christchurch on earthquake recovery matters, and so the Bentley was landed there. Well-known Rolls-Royce and Bentley Heritage expert Bruce McIlroy of Ashburton directed the car through its NZ compliance without too much trouble. Rodney says that Bruce has been a gold mine of knowledge and expertise for all things associated with Bentleys. In fact, whenever the Bentley needs a major service, it goes down to Ashburton for the work to be done.

SEPTEMBER 2022 13 Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque

It seems that the car had a rebuild in the mid-1980s because it appeared as a show car at several concourse events in the UK in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This car met all of Rodney’s requirements, and so the Bentley became his 60th birthday present to himself – arriving serendipitously in Christchurch on the day itself!

During the nine years that Rodney has owned his car, it has proved to be relatively trouble-free for a vehicle of its age. One notable improvement has been the installation of a Laycock J-type overdrive unit that allows the car to cruise comfortably at NZ open road speeds. He has done approximately 16,000 miles up and down the length of the country at an average of 24 MPG. The car is fitted with a sunroof, but Rodney says it is best not to rely on it being watertight, so he tends to only drive the car on fine days.

Rodney concludes by observing that his Derby Bentley is not a show car – it is a driving enthusiast’s car – it’s fun, it’s not ostentatious, and it’s delightfully different.

SEPTEMBER 202214 Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

Rodney’s other car is also a Bentley - a red 1992 Continental R, with a 6¾ litre Garrett-turbocharged V8 engine. Interestingly, this car has just had its 30th birthday, and so he is in the enviable situation of having two VCC-eligible Bentleys in his garage. It’s obvious that Rodney loves his Bentleys, and he is active in the NZ Rolls-Royce and Bentley Club. He says that it’s a great car club to be part of as the members are a great bunch of people, not at all pretentious! Rodney and his wife Anne are active in club events, and he has recently “volunteered” to become the editor of their club magazine.

Service by Tony and Pam August Club Nights are not the warmest time of the year, and numbers were down, but with a warm welcome from past Chairman Neil, our Club Night got underway with Club Member Peter Lockie speaking on his 50-plus years of experience with the St John Ambulance Service.

August Club NightSt John Ambulance

Starting off, Peter talked about how the St John came about many, many years ago and was established in NZ in 1855... it has been around for a long time.

Peter brought along some of the equipment that the Ambulances carry and explained their use. Equipment to monitor our body functions and keep us alive.

SEPTEMBER 202218 Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

Cheers, Tony and Pam

Peter did a great job in explaining what happens when you dial the emergency service, dialing 111 Call centres based in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, so you won’t be talking to someone in a far away land not speaking English. As Peter explained, all incoming calls require the caller to give as much information as possible so the Call Centre can prioritise your call. No, you won’t be forgotten, lifethreatening events take priority over toothache at 2.00 am in the morning, and you will possibly be told to take some painkillers and call your dentist in the morning. Call Centres are also manned by experienced medical staff to assist the call centre Thankoperators.you, Peter, for giving us a very informative evening telling us about your experience with St John, and I am sure we went away more informed on how the Ambulance Service operates. Anybody with a spare $300.000 to donate can fund one new AmbuThankslance. to Maureen and Heather for supper.

Thursday morning brings on relaxing activities before we head out to Kinloch where the Kinloch Volunteer Fire Brigade are putting on a BBQ meal. A fund-raiser for the Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Later cars in production got the Marles steering box and full steel bodies. In 1938, M-Seires cars were fitted with overdrive that could reach 100 mph at 4000 rpm. Only around 200 cars came with overdrive. The 4¼ Litre was scheduled to be replaced by the Mark V, but the intervening war cancelled production.

After producing the 3½ Litre for several years, Rolls-Royce wanted a solution to the heavier bodies which were being installed on their chassis. As a result, they increased engine capacity to 4257cc or 4.25 litres. The larger version was initially offered as an option and became regular equipment in 1937. To cope with the increased internal engine load, the white metal bearings were upgraded to the AC9 and AC7 alloy bearings from Halls with more oil grooves
