Printing Tips
Although you can print this magazine to A4 (either actual size or scaled to A4), this magazine has been set up in A5 format. This allows you to print 2 pages up on an A4 or even a booklet if your printer supports it.
If you open the magazine file in Acrobat Reader, and select file>print, under Page Size and Handling (see image below), you can print multiple pages per sheet. Click File>Print>Multiple>Pages per sheet> 2
If your printer supports printing both sides of the paper, you can also print a ‘Booklet’. Which allows you to print, then staple and fold up into an A5 magazine.

Chairman’s Report for January 2022
Belated Seasonal Felicitations To You All!
Whilst the weather may not be ideal for summer-time stuff, I can commence the year by imparting some very good news. An application to the Lion Foundation has resulted in a grant of over $10,000 for the replacement of the clubroom carpet. This application was lodged in the latter part of last year, and the good news came through on the 24th of January.
My thinking is that we will form a small group to make a recommendation to your management committee. Having selected a carpet, we then have to figure out when the hall can be emptied out and the new carpet laid. We can look forward to all that with a degree of pleasure. We will keep you informed of what is to happen and when.
The year’s activities commenced with Breakfast at The Hub on New Year’s Day. A good crowd of about 30 (or so I am told) participated in this event. Members should note that there has been a small increase in the charges for us at The Hub. Costs, like everything but our incomes, are slowly rising, and shopkeepers are forced to pass those costs on. Unfortunate, but understandable.
The monthly Committee Meeting took place without any fanfare or controversy. Bills paid, investments shifted from here to there to get a better rate, coming activities discussed, etc. There was no blood on the floor, and we didn’t need Peter Lockie’s skills. There was a brief review of the Christmas Dinner at the Cosmopolitan Club and its success or otherwise discussed. Various ideas were discussed for 2023, although we do have plenty of time to plan any changes. It was very nice
to have Diane Quarrie with us and to learn of plans and aspirations for the future. The Christmas Morning Tea that followed on the 16th was not one of the more successful events undertaken, with a very disappointing attendance.
Once again, the Petrolheads Morning Tea, this time at Café Lacos out at The Landing, was a very successful gathering. Barry Hoffman is to be congratulated for this initiative. About 30 attended and enjoyed Lacos’ hospitality and were amused by the robot that delivered food to the various table. I’m not sure how effective it may be, but it is fascinating to watch it “do its thing.” Members obviously enjoyed the chatter and the fellowship. Some of those attending are not comfortable venturing out at night, so this option is really suited for them.
A reminder to you all that Owen and his planners have organised a rally for 11th March. All the plotting and scheming is done, and the Rally Secretary eagerly awaits a flood of entries. While you still have plenty of time, please do not leave it to the last minute. Do not forget that one lucky local is going to win a $250 fuel card !!
Travel safely, Eric

Captain’s Report for January 2022
Heather and I were disappointed to miss the Christmas Dinner and presentations at the beginning of December last year, but by all accounts, it was an outstanding evening. Thank you to those of you who participated in this event, and congratulations to those who received membership awards.
As we look to 2023, the New Year’s Day breakfast was a smash hit, with over twenty in attendance. We left around midday after a second coffee on the deck, chatting with each other.
Barry Hoffman arranged for us to meet at L’Arte Café for the Coffee and Cars morning tea on the 11th, with another fantastic turnout, including our patron, Graham Mock, and June. It was great catching up with everyone.
Planning is well underway for the Country Roads Rally on Saturday, 11th March. Please get your entries in. Let’s get as many as possible to compete. Share the entry form with your VCC friends. Remember there’s a petrol voucher draw for locals. Wanganui had 70 entries for the Burma Run during their recent Vintage Weekend, so it can be done. If you need an entry form, text Heather at 027 232 4866.
Now for the events coming up. Firstly breakfast at The Hub on Sunday 6th February at 8.30 am onwards. Please ring me with your booking, as the folk at The Hub require numbers to ensure they have sufficient staffing. We have an increase in cost to $17.00 for breakfast – this is eggs any way, with bread of your choice plus one side, and a coffee, but this is still awesome value compared to some charges around town.
Wednesday 8th February 10.00 am is the Coffee and Cars morning tea. This one is being held at the Wairakei International Golf Course, a beautiful venue with great views.
That night is our summer BBQ which is to be held at the clubrooms starting at 6.00pm. The cost to you will be $5.00 per head. Bring a salad or desert, and the club will provide the meat. A committee member will ring you closer to the day for catering purposes.
Sunday 19th, is our club run. I have arranged a ‘barn raid’. Turn up to the clubrooms at 10.00, and I will give you more information then. Bring a plate of your favourite snack food for shared morning tea. Tea and coffee will be supplied.
Well, that’s enough from me, but don’t forget to enter the rally. The shutoff date is 28th February.
Additionally, don’t forget to contact me for breakfast at The Hub - 07 3788 327, or 027 448 2484.
Keep an eye on the programme for further exciting events, as we look forward to a year without cancellations.
Drive safe and stay safe.

John Harvey’s Ford Model T Sedan
by Eric Foley and Murray StanleyNot only has John Harvey reached the significant milestone of 50 years of VCC membership, his car has also achieved the even more significant milestone of turning 100 this year! Perhaps a congratulatory letter from King Charles is on the way?
Those members who attended our club’s Christmas party at the Cosmopolitan Club in December would have seen our National President Dianne Quarrie present John with his 50-year membership award and heard Taupo President Eric’s supporting address.
The story of John and his Model T began way back in 1958 when he was in his late teens and working as an apprentice motor mechanic in Levin. One of the lady customers at
the garage had the 1923 Model T Sedan but was finding the ongoing maintenance of the car a bit too much given its advancing age. John had worked on this car several times during his employment, including replacing the differential assembly. At the prompting of the garage owner, John made an offer to buy the car and promised the owner that he would restore it to “as new” condition. So on the 27th of January 1958, for the grand sum of £5 plus a £20 donation to the Salvation Army, John became the proud owner of the Model T –even though the cost of the purchase cleaned out a month of his apprentice’s wages!
A year into the restoration, John had a visit from Len Southward, who had heard of the restoration. Len had just finished the restoration of a 1926 Ford Model T New Beauty. He advised John that he had Model T parts over from his restoration, and John was welcome to them if he took a trailer to Len’s Seaview workshop, which was promptly undertaken. Once the running gear was complete, John started on the body woodwork with assistance from his father, a furniture manufacturer. A lot of the rear wood-
work, including the roof slats were in poor condition. The doors and the framing were in good condition, although a panel beater was required to make some new rear body panels and repair the four mudguards. The wheels also were in good condition, and the car is still running on its original 100-year-old spokes.
At some stage in the car’s life, it had been painted cream and brown – and the standard of the paint job left a lot to be desired. In fact, John thought that perhaps it had been painted with a broom! So as the bodywork was progressively being restored, John attacked each panel with a paint stripper to get rid of the offending colour scheme. It is part of automotive folklore that Henry Ford apparently said that customers could have a Model T in any colour they liked as long as it’s black. The truth of the matter is that initially, Model T’s came in red, grey, or green (and later blue). Black was only added as an available colour in 1912. The black-only policy began in 1914, primarily because it was also the year that Ford fired up his new moving assembly line. The new line reduced the time to build each car from more than 12 hours to just 90 minutes. Black paint was the cheapest, and using a single shade meant the line didn’t have to stop while workers cleaned the equipment to change the paint colours. Black remained the sole choice until 1926, when
some models were offered in green, maroon, or grey, all with black fenders. But when it came time for John to choose the colour scheme for his car, to him it was obvious – it had to be the traditional black.
On completion of the restoration, the car was registered on 7th December 1960. John joined the nearest branch of VCC NZ, which was Whanganui, in 1962. He has used it in 3 Burma Rallies, and he also entered the 1965 International Rally in the South Island. The car had its 15 minutes of fame in the 1960’s when it was used by Caltex in an advertising campaign for their new “Boron” fuel. This was a profitable arrangement given that they paid John for the use of his car with a 44-gallon drum of Caltex petrol!
John subsequently transferred to the Manawatu Branch before becoming a foundation member of the Horowhenua Branch. He transferred to Taupo in 2010. The Model T is still his prized possession, although he doesn’t drive it much these days.

Memo to all Car Clubs
Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains
Classic Car Run 30th April 2023
You are asked to keep this date free as the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains are once again organising our annual Classic car run. This event is part of the Ashburton Wheels Week festivities. Note that the swap meet is to be held on Saturday 7 th May and not the previous day as normal.
This is the 30th running of this hugely popular event and we ask you for your participation. Entry fee will be $20/car with profits going to a local organisation. The event will start from the Ashburton Showgrounds at 10.30am and will finish near Peel Forest approximately 1 hour later. Registrations will be from 9.am.
You will be given ins tructions like a car trial, and carry on the designated route to finish. There will be no shingle roads , except for a 1km graded driveway into the historic farm property and the instructions will be very straight forward.
There will be prizes for various vehicles that will be chosen by our independent judges, Roger Hart and Bernard Egan, two very well known identities in the Mid Canterbury area who have had many years experience of classic cars.
Last year due to Covid we moved away from supplying lunches and this year will be the same but your own picnic lunches are still encouraged.
The venue is situ ated 10 km off the scenic inland route 72, offering participants from outside Ashburton County an alternative route home.
We ask all Car Clubs to make their members aware of this fun low key event in your club bulletins or notice board.
