Chairman’s Report

Eric Foley Chairman’s Report for March 2023 It is particularly galling to commence my report on a sour note, but the need to cancel the long-planned Country Roads Rally was bitterly disappointing. Owen, Heather, and their team had planned a route, refreshments and lunches were arranged, dinner was booked, and then only a handful bothered to send in their entries. With Craig and Lynise Morrison of Taupo Brake and Clutch having stumped up with a $700 sponsorship for the event, having them present the prizes at the dinner would not have been a good look. Craig, to his credit, has told Owen to retain the sponsorship and put the money to some good use. When discussing the cancel/proceed options, the Rally Committee was acutely aware of the impression that cancelation would create. It was not a decision made lightly. What does arise from this decision is a need to do a bit of navel-gazing in an effort to find out just what the club members want in the way of motoring experiences. Your views will be canvassed in due course. In the meantime, please support Craig and Lynise at Taupo Brake and Clutch, 2/89 Tauhara Rd. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, I was unable to attend neither the Petrolheads morning tea at Licorice Café, Motu-o-apa or the club night at The Landing. I gather both went off well, and I understand Owen is to report on these events on my behalf. The Hospice Run is scheduled for 28th March, so I cannot report on that yet. I am well aware that Hospice clients enjoy the experience of travelling in older cars - the cars of their youth. On more domestic matters, the carpet which was selected was not available from the warehouse. It is to be manufactured shortly. Once it is available, laying will need to be scheduled. Therefore, it could be some weeks before the new carpet APRIL 2023

7

goes down. Neil had the slightly messy job of evicting tenants during the planned laying period, so he will have to go through this process once again. The major event that is only a few weeks off is the Annual General Meeting. There was a discussion about this at the Committee meeting last week. Most of the current officeholders are willing to stand again for re-election. It is my strongly-held view that any committee needs a slow, steady turnover of members. New blood, new ideas, please! Unfortunately, Owen will not be seeking re-election. He has done an excellent job whilst holding the Club Captains’ position, and I am sure we are all grateful for his contribution. Of course, this commitment is only possible with support at home, and Heather has willingly provided that. A great big ”Thank you “ to you both from all of us. The question I would ask then is “which one of you is going to put your hand up to be the new Club Captain ?” Take care out there. Eric

Captain’s Report

Owen Duncan Captain’s Report for March 2023 I want to start this report with comments about the impromptu club night at The Landing at the beginning of March, as Eric was unable to attend. We had a good turnout from both players and non-players, along with Craig, our sponsor from Taupo Brake and Clutch, and his father. Some came along early and enjoyed a meal before the serious stuff started. With the assistance of Dean and Kathy, teams were sorted, and the competition began. There was much fun and laughter amongst the members, which made for an interesting night. Strangely I finished with the highest score of the night, and no, I haven’t been secretly practising. I’ve only ever bowled twice before. Not sure how that happened.

Anyway, on with the events coming up. Firstly, there is breakfast at The Hub on Sunday, 3 April, from 8.30 am onwards. As we’re getting good attendance, please call or text me by 3.00 pm on Friday, 31 March, so I can give The Hub numbers, and they will ensure they have sufficient staff working. My numbers are 07 378 8327 or 027 448 2484. See you there. On the morning of Wednesday, 12 April, we have our Petrolheads Coffee n Cars morning tea at the new Airport Terminal, leaving the Clubrooms at about 9.30 am to travel in convoy. Barry will be away, but I’ve been tasked to check out the venue, and if the Airport Authority is charging for parking, I will change it, so keep an eye on your emails for notification. I am hoping they aren’t as the café has been upgraded very nicely. During the evening, we are holding our popular Fish and Chip Quiz night starting at 6.00 pm. This has been very well patronised in the past and is heaps of fun. The quiz master is all sorted and preparing questions. I will be doing some research into the cost of fish and chips (two fish and chips per pack) and will email details to you. Dinner is the only cost, and you are welcome to bring along alcohol. (Take your empties home with you). Tea and coffee will be supplied. A committee member will ring you prior to the night to get your orders. Sunday 16th, is a club run and shared lunch. This is going to be a fun event, and you will need a navigator. Assemble at the clubrooms at 9.15 am for a 9.30 am departure to see some of the district’s roads. Bring along a pen, a navigator, and some food to share. If this is anything like the morning tea at the barn raid at Ivan and Honey’s, you won’t be disappointed. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. It should be a great day and a nice drive. As winter approaches, we can look forward to coming events such as the Brass Monkey run and mid-year pot-luck Christmas dinner. That’s it from me but don’t forget the AGM on Wednesday 10 May at 7.30 am. This is your chance to have your say and come onto the committee. I look forward to seeing you at all the upcoming events. Drive safe and stay safe. Owen

Four Wheels Good: Six Wheels Better!

by Murray Stanley

The Crazy World of Six-Wheel Cars Six-wheel cars have always been a rare sight on the roads. But with the neverending technological advances in the automotive industry over the years, six-wheel cars did occasionally appear – from both specialist and mainstream manufacturers. In this article, we will take a look at some of the most iconic six-wheel cars and explore what makes them unique.

The Tyrell P34, the first six-wheeled Formula One car, was introduced in 1976. It featured two pairs of smaller front wheels in addition to the traditional rear wheels. This design aimed to increase the contact area with the road, thereby improving grip and traction. Despite initial scepticism, the Tyrell P34 was a success, winning the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix and securing several podium finishes.

In the world of luxury cars, the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 is a standout. This behemoth of a vehicle features six wheels and a massive 5.5-liter V8 engine that produces 536 horsepower. The G63 AMG 6x6 was built for military use, but Mercedes-Benz decided to produce a limited run of civilian models in 2013. With a price tag of around $600,000, this car was not for the faint of heart.

Another iconic six-wheel car was the Covini C6W. This Italian sports car, produced between 2004 and 2016, featured four small wheels at the front and two

larger rear wheels, giving it a unique and aggressive look. The Covini C6W was powered by a 4.2-liter Audi V8 engine that produced 434 horsepower and could reach a top speed of 186 miles per hour.

The Panther 6 was a British six-wheel car that was produced in the late 1970s. It featured a mid-mounted 8.2-liter V8 engine that produced a staggering 600 horsepower. Despite its impressive power, the Panther 6 was never mass-produced, with only two prototypes ever being built.

One of the most unique six-wheel cars is the Hennessey VelociRaptor 6x6. Based on the Ford F-150 Raptor, the VelociRaptor 6x6 features six wheels, a cusAPRIL 2023

tom off-road suspension, and a supercharged 600 horsepower V8 engine. This monster of a truck can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 4.9 seconds.

Way back in the 1920s there was the luxurious Hispano-Suiza H6A which may well have been the world’s first six-wheeled car. La Hispane Suiza Fabrica de Autommobiles produced many innovative racing cars and engines before switching their focus to aeroplanes for the Allies in the war effort. It was this knowledge that enabled them to later build the gargantuan H6, which featured a heaving 6.5-litre straight-six engine and, in an industry-first, mechanical servo-assisted brakes on all four wheels. An H6A was reportedly ordered by the King of Greece. However, after his abdication, it was purchased by the motion picture director D. W. Griffith for $35,000, later appearing in several films from the 1930s. No story about 6-wheel motoring would be complete without a reference to Lady Penelope’s FAB1 Rolls-Royce, which starred in the Thunderbirds TV series from the 1960s. Rolls-Royce consented to the use of its brand, saying that the company “couldn’t see any harm as the series was aimed at children. We thought it would be good for

14

Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque

the cars – give them a modern image and, you never know, inspire a child to own one, one day”. To distinguish the look from that of real-life cars, designer Derek Meddings gave FAB1 a six-wheel drive. He said that his decision to place two sets of wheels at the front instead of at the back was motivated purely by aesthetics: “My excuse was that the engine was so big and powerful it needed them, but it wasn’t done for any technical reason. In conclusion, six-wheel cars were a fascinating and unique aspect of the automotive industry. They allegedly offered improved traction, stability, and appearance, making them an option for car enthusiasts looking for something a bit different. While they were never practical for everyday use, they were an impressive feats of engineering and design.

Petrolheads Coffee Morning – 15th March 2023

by Fiona Holliday

Another lovely sunny autumn morning saw a group of us meeting at the Club Rooms so that we could drive in convoy down to Licorice Café in Motuoapa. That was the plan anyway, but alas, when we arrived, Licorice was closed due to a power cut. After a bit of debate, we set off again down to Turangi in search of a café there. We happened upon a nice café called Hydro that was busy, but the wait was worth it because the coffee was lovely, and the muffins and scones were huge. Some of us were out on the deck under an umbrella, but most grouped ourselves around a large table to chat and eat our morning tea. What could have been a non-starter turned into a very pleasant morning and a nice drive. Barry’s coffee mornings are very popular now, and people certainly like to stay for a while. We are looking forward to the next one Barry!

Bird’s Eye View by Fiona Holliday

Has anyone ever wondered what all those numbers and letters (otherwise known as trim level designators) mean on the rear end of some cars? You know, you are the passenger and being driven around by the man only because he can’t bear sitting in the passenger seat without telling you a better route to take or making “helpful” comments on your driving! So you stare ahead at the back end of the car in front whilst waiting at a Stop sign for the interminable time it takes for the front car to finally decide to go (are they waiting for the right colour car to pass by maybe). Your mental wheels start to turn on important things like: do you like the colour or not? Is the car being driven by the headrest because you can’t see the driver’s head or any body parts? How many dings are there in the back end? In the good old days, there used to be the manufacturer’s badge plonked in the middle of the boot lid above the lock and the model on the left or right-hand side with simple additions like “GT” or, if you had a posh car, “Ghia.” Strings of numbers and letters are littered everywhere, and unless you are in the know and probably not a girl, they could mean absolutely anything. Are they important or just there for show or to impress? Do they do anything, or even matter? Then there is the added complexity that some totally posh cars are de-badged, and you don’t have any of that information at all. So if those drivers are happy to drive around incognito, why are all the numbers and letters there? Fiona

The existing owner and winning car (as they appear today), but placed back in time to when it was actually Jo Siffert who raced this Porsche 907 at Nűrburgring 1000 in the late 60’s. Original oil on canvas by NZ Artist, Don Packwood www.donpackwood.co.nz

The 907 was introduced at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following a suggestion by Ferdinand Piëch, the position of the driver was moved from the traditional left (as in German road cars) to the right as this gives advantages on the predominant clockwise race tracks. With a new longtail body, the 907s reached 302 km/h (190 mph) on the straight, even though it used the reliable 220 hp Porsche 910 2000cc 6-cyl rather than the more powerful 8-cyl. Vented brake disks were being used as standard from that point on. The best Porsche 907 finished 5th, beaten only by Ford and Ferrari with their much bigger engines. As the record-breaking performances of the 7.0l V8-powered Ford had triggered rumors about a future rule change, Porsche started to prepare themselves in summer of 1967. The 907 was equipped with the 270 hp 2200cc Type 771/1 8-cyl which was then modified for the rules of the new 3 litre prototype category that was announced in late 1967 to come in effect already in 1968. From 1968, the big V8 and V12 prototypes of Ford and Ferrari were banned. APRIL 2023
