Printing Tips
Although you can print this magazine to A4 (either actual size or scaled to A4), this magazine has been set up in A5 format. This allows you to print 2 pages up on an A4 or even a booklet if your printer supports it.
If you open the magazine file in Acrobat Reader, and select file>print, under Page Size and Handling (see image below), you can print multiple pages per sheet. Click File>Print>Multiple>Pages per sheet> 2
If your printer supports printing both sides of the paper, you can also print a ‘Booklet’. Which allows you to print, then staple and fold up into an A5 magazine.

Chairman’s Report for April 2023
This month has seen a range of activities, some better attended than others. As usual, the month started off with breakfast at The Hub. About 30 people turned up at 8.30 to partake of the usual goodies – bacon and eggs, mince on toast, etc. The usual chatter took place over a cup of coffee before the crew left an hour and a half or so later. This gathering was followed by the Petrolheads gathering at Lava Glass. On this occasion, there was a smaller number than usual, but still lots of chatter. I enjoy this spot as I never tire of admiring the glass works that Lyndon Over and his colleagues produce. It is quite magnificent stuff!
Club Night was a well-attended evening with a meal of fish and chips preceding a quiz. About 50 members participated in this event. The food was tasty, and the quiz, presented by a Dame Edna Everage look-alike, went down well. As usual, in an event like this, members are encouraged to bring their own refreshments. As usual, though, there were one or two members who chose to leave the empties behind. Very disappointing. Your committee has a strong desire that you take your empties home with you!
The monthly club run was an interesting affair, with the convoy setting out from the club rooms, traversing local country roads before heading into the back blocks around and above Reporoa. It was an interesting drive that was originally plotted as Stage One of last year’s Country Roads Rally. Some of the rural outlooks were quite delightful. The run finished about 3 hours later with a shared lunch in the Broadlands Hall. Altogether, it was a very pleasant day out. My thanks to Owen, Heather, and their crew for plotting the route in the first place and for organising the lunch venue.
The new carpet issue bubbles along quietly. The product is now with Midway, and they have set dates in mid - June for the carpet to be laid. Closer to the time, we will have to arrange for the hall to be emptied out. Neil has warned the tenants of the pending chaos. Your committee has high hopes for a splendid outcome. Also on our radar is a thorough review of the curtaining situation. The present curtains have been there for many years, and we will need to look carefully at the options of repairs and cleaning versus replacement. Neil has also been dealing with some problems with rubbish being left behind after various tenancies.
By the time the May magazine goes to print, the A G M will be over, and you will have new officers managing your club’s affairs for the 2023-24 period. I am grateful for the support provided by all the committee members over the past 12 months. I am conceited enough to think that things went reasonably smoothly. I certainly cannot recall any unpleasant exchanges.
Take care out there – there are some idiots about.

Captain’s Report for April-May 2023
Firstly I wish to thank Dame Edna Everage for her special appearance at our Fish and Chip Quiz Night, which we held recently. She mesmerised us with her fashion and entertained us with her sense of humour with some tough questions. I hope that you will return again and grace us with your presence.
With the programme sorted for the remainder of the year, I can relax with my resignation from my post. The new events committee can use this plan as a guide for future events if they wish, and I am sure they will come up with some fun things for us to do. I have given the last three years as Club Captain my best shot and am happy to assist the events and main committee in any way possible moving forward. Heather and I have enjoyed arranging past events for you, and we thank you, the club members, for supporting us in doing so. I hope you have enjoyed them.
I have already organised our club run for Sunday, 21st May, and am planning to travel to Tihoi Tavern for lunch. I am still fine-tuning the details with them on
what they will have available for us in the way of food. This will be advised to you in an emailed reminder. In the meantime, consider coming along for the drive and enjoy the day. It should take about three-quarters of an hour one way, so I was planning on leaving the clubrooms in convoy around 10.30 am via Poihipi Road. I may hand out some ‘guff’ sheets as we leave the clubrooms on the exact route we can take if you wish to go in convoy. Hope you can join us.
Moving forward, I wish the events committee all the best for the coming year and thank all of you again for your support. When finalised, the amended programme will be published in the magazine, so keep an eye out for it.

Taupo Funeral Services Ltd, Member of Funeral Director’s Assn. of NZ.AGM 2023 Review
by Eric FoleyThe 2023 Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday, 10th May. A rather cold, unpleasant evening saw a reasonable turnout of members to review the past year and select officers to carry our club forward. The meeting commenced with members upstanding for a moment’s silence for the recent death of our colleague, Noel Henderson. Following this, the meeting moved quietly forward. The various reports were received without discussion, so it can be assumed that the group was reasonably happy with events and actions in the last 12 months. The election of officers for the coming year saw the following -
• Chairman: Eric Foley
• Secretary: Elaine Taylor
• Treasurer: John Searle
• Club Captain: Vacant (no, that’s not a person. No one put their hand up.)
• Committee: Murray Stanley, Peter Lockie, Owen Duncan, Maureen Ransley, Fiona Holliday, Andrew Birkbeck.
In addition, in order to foster new ideas for events and functions, there has been an Events Sub-committee formed of volunteers: Murray Hutton, Murray Stanley, Tony Mannington, Fiona Holliday, and Trish Poupard. We look forward to the options that this group may put before us. What we currently do, what it costs, and various alternatives were discussed as part of a reasonably vigorous debate.
The issue of subscriptions was discussed briefly. Our branch subs ($35.00) are part of the subs we pay to VCC NZ. The branch sub is then remitted to us. The decision was made to leave things at the present level.
The age of vehicles written about in Beaded Wheels also received some discussion. There was a view that with much older vehicles being featured, an owner of a more recently-qualifying vehicle may be put off joining VCC. There was a feeling that Beaded Wheels could only print the articles that had been presented to them for publication.

Here’s Why Your Car’s Tires Are Black
by Robert BaconYou removed your errors in elementary school with pink and blue erasers. And if your high school was anything like mine, every shade of the rainbow flew past your head (if you were lucky) in the form of elastic rubber bands. So, as a gearhead, when I look at cars, motorcycles, and trucks, I wonder why the tires are always black.
Couldn’t automakers spruce them up and add some spice to the scene? Well, no, Goodyear once attempted to make a colored tire to match any occasion but failed. And here’s why.
The rubber that forms the base of your tires’ compound starts life with a milky white color and is made from a mixture of sap from a rubber tree and synthetic rubber. It’s interesting to imagine, but I wouldn’t fancy trying to keep it clean. But aesthetics have nothing to do with the fact that your tires are black by the end of the manufacturing process. The reasoning is far more practical.
In the late 1800s, cars were finding the limits of grip provided by their wooden wheels with a band of iron around the rim. So, in 1895, the rubber tire was born to help lay down the four horsepower most models were putting out around then. Unfortunately, the white tires would get soft and tacky when hot and rigid when cold. Something needed to change.
Tiremakers experimented with various techniques until Sidney Charles Moteand, a team of experimenters in England, discovered the reinforcing effect that a substance called carbon black adds to rubber in 1904. They learned this by taking soot, which contains black carbon, from different industrial processes and blending it with the rubber mixture, turning it black.
Carbon black is a pigment derived from the incomplete combustion of crude oil or natural gas in a limited-oxygen environment. The process produces fine soot, which is kept in silos at tire plants. Regular soot is no longer necessary, and carbon black is added directly to the manufacturing process. And more than a century later, it’s as important as ever.
Firstly, adding carbon black to the rubber mix helps to stabilize more than 20 chemical compounds in tire rubber. These chemicals help to ensure tires stay flexible and provide strength under load. But the benefits you notice daily are improved performance and longevity.
Have you ever found an elastic band on the ground during the summer? The slightest stretch, and it snaps. Carbon black protects tires from harmful UV rays that cause the rubber to become brittle and disintegrate. We don’t want our tires to be too hard, as it decreases performance, but in the same vein, we don’t want them to get too hot.
When your tires get too hot, performance drops, but more importantly, their lifespan decreases tremendously. You don’t need to tear around a race track to get your tires hot around the tread and belt areas, as regular highway driving on a hot day is more than enough. The carbon black in your tires works to disperse and not trap the heat generated while driving. Without it, the wear-and-tear would guarantee you’d be replacing your rubber at a financially alarming rate.
In short, carbon black keeps tires performing better for longer and, as a by-product, turns them black. And, honestly, would you want them in any other color?
Petrolheads Coffee Morning – 10th
May 2023
by Fiona HollidayThe rain and wind didn’t put off the hardy souls who craved their coffee fix this morning.
We gathered at the Clubrooms and then set off in convoy for The Hub. The staff at The Hub must be used to us by now, as we were there only last Sunday for breakfast.
As usual, there was a big turnout of about thirty at this month’s Petrolheads morning tea, which is always popular and clearly not just about car chat. Barry rolled up in his Alvis, which has no side windows, and it started to really rain hard once we left the Clubrooms, but he seemed happy. The staff at The Hub churned out coffee and muffins in record time.
After coffee, we headed over to Barry’s “shed” on Spa Road. As we all now know, this is clearly not just a shed as it was crammed full of a wonderful eclectic collection of classic British and European sports cars. It was great to see so many of the chaps purring over the cars, taking pictures and selfies, and chatting.
We stayed for an hour or so while it poured outside until Barry practically had to kick us out. Looking at his collection of cars was just a pure treat for everyone, and there were even a few red leather interiors!

All About Books
Did you know we have a well-stocked library?
Did you know that you could borrow books?
by Fiona HollidayDid you know that the library would be open every time we meet at the clubrooms for an event?
The library has undergone a bit of TLC and the books are arranged in a logical manner. There is a new catalogue on the table so you can see at a glance by manufacturer if there is anything of interest.
There are many Haynes, Gregory’s and Autobooks workshop manuals.
There is also a great collection of glossy pictorial coffee table books on motor racing, sports cars, veterans, vintage and classic cars. There is even some humour so there should be something for everyone.
Come and have a look round!
Bird’s Eye View
by Fiona HollidayHave you ever wandered around a car park looking for your car because you can’t remember where you parked it? It can’t be just me, can it?
I was wondering what the most popular car colour is, so I Googled it and found that it’s white; of course it is!
I can very well remember walking around a car park in Hamilton on a very hot day, looking for my white car. I eventually spotted it, trudged over, and pressed the remote. Nothing happened, so I just kept pressing it like an idiot and pleading with the car to open the doors because it was really hot. Finally, after a few choice words and wondering whether I needed to phone someone, I glanced in the back window and spotted a box of tissues on the parcel shelf, which was odd because I didn’t remember having tissues in the car. It took an embarrassingly long time for the penny to drop and for me to realise that this was indeed not my car. I slunk over the few spaces to my own car.
Airport car parks are the worst, especially when you leave the car there for a while. I always think I’ll remember the aisle and space number, but days or weeks later, of course, I can’t, and I’m yet again wondering around a much bigger car park, this time with a suitcase, hand luggage, duty-free and a coat looking for my white car in a sea of other white cars.
I recently read an article filled with those super-efficient little things that can be of assistance when undertaking air travel. One such hateful idea is that it’s a good idea to take a picture with your phone of your parking space and aisle number so that on your return, you can go directly to your car when you’re all jet lagged and fed up. The upside of this is that you can be smug when you see others wandering around looking for their cars.
So white cars, we’ve all had one, got one, or are thinking of buying one. Don’t do it – get a yellow one instead.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom III was the final large pre-war Rolls-Royce. Introduced in 1936, it replaced the Phantom II and it was the only V12 Rolls-Royce until the 1998 introduction of the Silver Seraph. It is the first of the three V12-powered Rolls-Royce Phantoms, with the 2003-2017 Rolls-Royce Phantom VII and 2018 – Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII being the other two. 727 V12 Phantom III chassis were constructed from 1936 to 1939, and approximately 650 have survived. Although chassis production ceased in 1939 (with one final chassis being built in 1940), cars were still being bodied and delivered in 1940 and 1941. The last car, though the rolling chassis was completed in 1941, was not delivered with a body to its owner until 1947.
The Phantom III was the last car that Henry Royce worked on – he died, aged 70, a year into the Phantom III’s development.
