Chairman’s Report

Eric Foley Chairman’s Report for November 2023 Christmas is almost upon us, folks! Next Saturday, 2nd December, is the Christmas Parade, and from that point on, it all gets a bit frantic. However, I’m not here to tell you about what is coming, but what we have done and/or anything of great moment. The month started in its usual manner with breakfast at The Hub. About 30 people participated in this event. Something must be going right, as much of the same group turns up month after month. It is a great spot to have a tasty, reasonably priced breakfast and to catch up with your VCC friends. Club night was a really interesting evening. Murray Stanley spoke of his day at the Goodwood Revival motor racing event. Apparently, dressing in period costume is a requirement for entry. Murray and Barbara spent some time browsing through the tents and stalls that are set up for this 3-day event. Murray gave an entertaining description of their day’s activities, all of which was supported by a range of photographs of the day at the races. Murray’s address was followed by Peter Lockie giving us the rundown on his trip to Bathurst for the Bathurst 1000. Peter and his companions were there for DECEMBER 2023

the whole event – the practice days, the behind-the-scenes activities, the support events, and the big race itself. It was during the practice sessions for this race that Shane Van Gisbergen hit 300.5 km/hr on Conrod Straight! This address was also illustrated with a number of photographs of his experience. I found both addresses informative and entertaining. Question time followed each of the addresses. The Petrolheads Coffee Morning took place at Wairakei Golf Course this month. It is a lovely venue, and noise is a bit less of a problem here. As in the breakfast session, a representative group of members turned out for this event. It is a great opportunity to spend a little quiet time with members who have similar interests. Unfortunately, the weather played a major role in the monthly run. A wet morning with a forecast of heavy rain deterred most members from going on the run to Okoroire. Three couples and a solo member turned up at the club rooms, all in their moderns, and after a brief discussion, retired to a local coffee shop for a cuppa and a sticky bun. It was regrettable, but the run is still there for another day. For all that, I enjoyed the moment. The other issue that has landed on my plate is reporting back to our committee on the restructuring of the VCC NZ constitution. It’s wildly exciting stuff, but someone has to do it. At the AGM in Christchurch in March, there will be a lot of discussion on this, including workshops and group discussions. Oh, the excitement !! Unfortunately, the AGM falls on the same weekend as our Country Roads rally. I certainly hope you have all got your hearts, minds, and wallets set on this event. We need your participation. It will start mid-morning and finish early afternoon. Fill in the entry form as soon as it hits your In-Box, please. Finally, I wish you all Seasonal Felicitations and safe travels. Eric

A Step Back in Time at the Goodwood Revival

by Murray Stanley

The Goodwood Revival is well known to car enthusiasts as a “bucket list” celebration of the glamorous days of vintage racing and classic elegance. Given that Barbara and I were going to be in the UK this past year, we made sure that we were able to tick that event off our bucket list. The Goodwood track is located in the south of England near the city of Chichester, which is approximately a 200-mile drive down from London. The historic circuit is part of the Duke of Richmond’s Goodwood Estate, hosted its first race in 1948, and has seen many iconic events during its heyday, including many Formula 1 races. But by 1966, the ever-increasing speeds of racing cars required the installation of track safety measures, and the owners chose to retire the track. DECEMBER 2023

11

Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

However, this all changed in 1998 with the inaugural Goodwood Revival race meeting. It is a three-day festival held each September for the types of racing cars and motorcycles that would have competed during the circuit’s original period—1948–1966. The circuit is unchanged from its heyday, remaining in its 1952 configuration when the chicane was added. No modern vehicles are allowed within the circuit perimeter throughout the weekend, except for modern fire and rescue vehicles. This year’s event was the 25th running of the Revival.

The Revival features a variety of races, each showcasing different classes of vehicles, including sports cars, saloons, and motorcycles. There is even a pedal car race along the pit straight for youngsters in restored Austin J40 pedal cars. One of the interesting races while we were there was a class for Ferrari 250 GTs – cars that these days are worth millions of dollars each. The Ferrari of ex-formula one driver Karun Chandock, said to be valued at $118M, caught fire during that race! The Goodwood Revival is not just about the cars; it’s a celebration of the entire vintage lifestyle. Spectators and participants alike don periodappropriate costumes, transforming the event into a kind of time capsule. From gents in three-piece suits and mechanics in vintage overalls to elegant ladies in flowing dresses and wide-brimmed hats, the fashion at the Goodwood Revival is as much a highlight as the racing itself. But the Revival goes beyond the racetrack, offering a myriad of attractions for visitors. The Revival High Street, a recreation of a typical 1960s shopping street, features vintage shops and boutiques offering everything from classic attire to retro accessories. A vintage funfair, complete with traditional rides and amusements, adds a touch of nostalgia and fun for the whole family. Given that the circuit started off as a World War II airfield, historic aircraft also fly in for the event. For a fan of classic aircraft, it was a thrill to get up close to a Hawker Hurricane fighter and a rare Fairey DECEMBER 2023

Swordfish torpedo bomber parked beside the grass airstrip in the infield. So, going to the Goodwood Revival was an amazing experience for a classic car (and plane) enthusiast. If you are planning to go so that you can tick that event off your bucket list, here is my advice for you to make the most of your experience. • Make sure that you go in period dress (although clothes are available at the Revival High Street at the track – or you can hire costumes from nearby towns. You will feel out of it if you just go in regular clothes. • Go for more than one day. There is just too much to see in one day alone. • Get there very, very, very early as the traffic is horrendous. We were at the track by 8 am, and yet there were still plenty of people ahead of us. • Spend the money to buy passes into the paddock stand tickets. You’ve gone all that way, so don’t skimp. • Bring your camera with a decent telephoto lens – a phone camera is just not sufficient to get good photos of the racing. Hospice Run – Tuesday 21st November 2023

by Fiona Holliday

Today was the second time out in our VCC cars this year for the Hospice patients. We joined them for morning tea at their weekly Tuesday Club, and once they were fortified with tea and a piece of cake, they were ready to decide which car to ride in. There were two veteran Model As owned by Bill and Tony, and they proved to be very popular, with Bill disappearing for ages with a car full of ladies to the point where we thought he had absconded with them. Just before we sent out a DECEMBER 2023

search party, he arrived back at Izard House, so all was well. One of the ladies said the car was the same age as she was. I don’t know if she was kidding or not, though.

The Jaguars were favourites, too, as was Ray’s red MG. He took a couple of brave hearts out for a chilly drive, including Daphne, who is always looking for a ride in a sports car. The Morris Minor stirred up memories of times gone by. There were fewer cars than we had in March, but there were enough to make it enjoyable for the patients and nurses.

It was lovely to see the Club members with their much-loved and very shiny cars. Many thanks to all of the VCC members who came along with their cars and to the hospice staff and volunteers. The Hospice would definitely like to hold this event twice a year now, in Spring and Autumn, as it’s so popular. Check out our Facebook page, too, for more pictures. DECEMBER 2023

Petrolheads Coffee Morning – 15 November 2023

The petrolheads and coffeeheads met up in the carpark at Wairakei Golf Club this morning and there was another great turnout of 17 cars and 32 people.

We had our own area in the Golf Club to sit this time, which did make hearing what people near you were saying much easier as this has been bit of a problem in other locations.

It’s very comfortable and spacious at Wairakei and it just goes to prove what we’ve been thinking and that is that we all love eating and drinking!

Parts Shed With the passing of our dear friend, Club mate, and Spare Parts Coordinator, Mr. Bruce Jefferies, I have offered my services to continue on a temporary basis to look after the Club’s Parts Shed. The Club is always looking for good used parts, which the Club can onsell, and remember, if you need something out of the Parts Shed, call me on 027-494 2445. Bruce and I spent a number of hours together in the Parts Shed over a number of months before Bruce’s passing. At this stage, I would like to continue and finish off what we started: a massive cleanup (probably another load to the dump) and re-carpeting the floors. (carpet is done) When the new carpet was installed in the Club Rooms, Bruce said it would be a good idea to use the old carpet for the Parts Shed. It’s probably now the only carpeted Parts Shed in NZ! There are still a few things that need attending to, e.g., Bruce would have liked a small workbench setup with a small wire wheel/ grinder for cleaning purposes. If you have a small bench and no longer use it, we would be grateful if you donated it to the Club. With Christmas approaching fast and time running out, I would like to do something in the new year. Finish it off and have the best-looking VCC Parts Shed. If you wish to be part of a small team and help finish off what Bruce started, I would be grateful. Cheers, Tony Mannington. 027-494 2445

Aston Martin DBR1/300, Le Mans 1959 (Drivers: Roy Salvadori & Carroll Shelby) Original oil on canvas by NZ Artist, Don Packwood www.donpackwood.co.nz

The 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 27th 24 Hours of Le Mans, Grand Prix of Endurance, and took place on 20 and 21 June 1959, on Circuit de la Sarthe. It was also the fourth round of the F.I.A. World Sports Car Championship. The prospect of an exciting duel between Ferrari, Aston Martin and giantkillers Porsche was enough to draw large crowds and some 150,000 spectators gathered for France’s classic sports car race, around the 8.38-mile course. In the end Shelby brought the Aston Martin home a lap ahead of Trintignant in a formation finish. The marque had first entered the Le Mans race in 1928, running every race since 1931 and had finished second three times and third twice before this victory.

Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque

Taupo’s 2024 annual national rally has a date change for a number of reasons, the main one being that three of our neighbouring clubs had events listed on the NZ Vintage Car Club calendar, which would have impacted on our entries. This was done at the recent AGM where our club was represented by Owen Duncan, and required a snap decision so the yearly calendar could be published. The new date is: Saturday 16 March 2024

Put this date in your diaries!

What is this rally? For those who don’t know, this date is our club’s chance to host entries from out of town to join our own members in a fun day of motoring. In the competitive section vehicles are classified in the year of manufacture: • Veteran Vehicles (VET) Motor Vehicles constructed prior to 31 December 1918. • Vintage Vehicles (VV) Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1919 and 31 December 1931. • Post Vintage Vehicles (PVV) Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1932 and 31 December 1945. Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

• Post War Vehicles (PWV) Motor Vehicles constructed between 1 January 1946 and 31 December 1960. • Post 1960 Vehicles (P60V) Motor Vehicles constructed between 1st January 1961 and 31st December 1980, such vehicles to be known as Post 1960 Vehicles • Post 1980 Vehicles (P80V) Motor Vehicles constructed on or after the 1st January 1981 provided that no vehicle is deemed eligible for this category until the day immediately following the 30th anniversary of its original date of construction as determined in accordance with Section 2 of the Club Vehicle Technical Code, such vehicles to be known as Post 1980 Vehicles. (Refer By-laws) The above classes are eligible for prizes. To enter these one member of the vehicle must be a full member of the NZVCC. We also run a non-competitive class called touring section for those who wish to participate with no pressure and for those who are not full members of the NZVCC. This does not negate you from receiving spot prizes. All entrants are recommended to have a navigator to make it safer to travel the course. If you have a car and need a navigator let the organisers know, and you don’t have a vehicle available or running we can put you with someone who does. Last year we cancelled the rally due to poor interest. We dearly wish to run this event so we don’t let anyone down. Our out of town entrants go to a lot of trouble in arranging accommodation and transporting vehicles to Taupo plus there is a lot of work that goes into organising these types of events. We want it to be fun and successful. We encourage you to support our club hopefully by entering, or helping if needed, and encourage you to talk to those members from other clubs to join us.

Plans are in place to get this organised and entry forms will be out soon. We will call for helpers closer to the time. We plan for the rally to be easy to participate in with minimal questions, but we do need some points of difference or difficulty in the day to determine our winners. I would like to relinquish the secretarial part of the rally. Is there anyone who wishes to take it on for this year? I have a folder that I can handover to help you. That will leave me free to help plot the course, or even enter. If you have any questions give Heather a ring on 027 232 4866 or Owen, Rally Director on 0274 482 484 or either of us on 07 378 8327.
