Chairman’s Report:

July Club Runs: We have had a couple of very interesting runs this month, the first one was Harry and Gay’s trip to Opotiki to view the new Harbour Development which is a huge undertaking with a new outlet to the sea with 400 metre groins on each side made up of rocks in different sizes up to 3 ton and concrete blocks up to 15 ton. With an all weather entrance and a new marina this will be an asset not only to Opotiki but the whole of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. We couldn’t get too close to the worksite but from the sand dunes we were able to see and hear the goings on. Thanks to Phil for arranging John Galbraith, Project Director of the development for giving us a guided tour and explaining the whole development to us. After all the walking we were hungry, Karen and Mark had arranged for us to go to the “Kapai Kai Cafe” for lunch. A great lunch and service, we should go back.

Continued

Anyway we started at Bob and Annette Townsend’s on Domain Road. Usually very dark and torches were needed to find the questions, of course most of the cars were 1920’s to 1950’s models, so the lights weren’t too flash, so the torch was quite handy.

Later we moved to the Athletic Clubrooms and much later to the Watchorn Museum. In those early years most if not all of the Night Owl Runs were plotted by Lorolei Pollard and Tom Needham and I know that on more than one occasion Lorolei walked the route to check it out and to make sure the instructions were correct. Then some time in the mid 2000’s the winner on the night was asked to set the next years run if they were able to. In the year 2000 the “Lorolei Pollard Night Owl Trophy” was competed for, which is the trophy we compete for today. Fortunately most of the winners saw fit to write their name on the underside of the base, so we do have a bit of a record of the winners. However on going through back issues of the Running Board we were able to fill in a few gaps, but there are three years we can’t find a winner for the years of 2002, 2003 and 2005.

Night Owl Run and Trophy: Since about the mid 1980’s as far as I can remember, we have had a “Night Owl Run”, maybe even before that as my memory is getting a bit fuzzy.

The intention is to have a plaque or plate installed on the trophy with the names of all the winners inscribed on it. Further down in my report is a list of the winners, missing the years 2002, 2003 and 2005. If you know the winners of these years, let me know.

Noel and Lois for a great day out.

On Sunday 24th Noel and Lois took us on a trip to Mount Maunganui. First we looked at the American Retro Shop with all sorts of Retro Clothing, car parts and the like and out the back were three drag cars, a great place of interest.

From our Secretary Karen: Membership We welcome one new member this month, Mr Keith Rawlinson who lives at Mount Maunganui, and whose parents are also members of our Branch. If you know of anyone interested in joining it is very easy to do so now by going to the Vintage Car Club of NZ website and you will find a heading How To Join. This is a simplified process to the old days of having proposers and seconders.

Then after that we found our way to Noel & Lois’ nephew Clint’s Panel and Paint Shop. The cars that were being worked on was an HQ Holden, Fiat Bambino and a Nash Metropolitan. Then there were the cars that were on show for us Then there was the $5 BBQ lunch, it was the best $5 lunch I have had.

After lunch Noel and Clint told us what he had done and where he had worked and about his business. We then toured the premises and marvelled at the cars, especially the RS ThanksEscort.
