Chairman’s Report: Another fun year of vintage motoring is fast coming to an end, and it seems that everybody is looking forward to our summer holidays and hoping for plenty of sunshine. As we head into the festive season, I would like to thank all the EPOP branch members who have supported me through my first few months as your branch chairman. I have found that it’s a job that certainly comes with its fair share of challenges, however many enjoyable hours on the road with likeminded club members makes it worth the effort. We are lucky to have an active branch full of interesting vehicles and in many cases those vehicles have equally interesting owners. I would also like to thank all the members who supported our annual gettogether with Gisborne Branch this month. We had a great turnout at Ohiwa this year and had a very enjoyable weekend both on and off the roads. Phil and Margaret were worthy winners of the rally with a perfect score on the run and a magnificent selfie taken at the bridge ensuring the trophy remains in the Eastern Bay of Plenty for another 12 months. Finally, a big thank you to Harry and Gay who once again have kindly offered to host our members for a Christmas lunch following the Kawerau Christmas parade. I’m sure this will be a great way to finish off 2023 and maybe even hatch a few plans for the new year ahead. Merry Christmas everyone. FAR NORTH TOUR 2023 in our 1973 MBG Roadster

Barry and Tessa Keene

On Friday 3rd November we had a very wet trip north until Auckland when the weather improved but the traffic did not. The weather for the rest of the time was lovely and fine. The new motorway from Puhoi to Warkworth is fantastic. There were 33 Entrants mainly from Northland, Wellsford and Auckland Clubs with one each from Taranaki, Waikato and EBOP. This years Tour had a slightly different format in that after the lunch there were four options to choose from. As usual we started at the Northland VCC Club Rooms and headed to Dargaville for morning tea. From there we continued to travel on Northlands tarsealed roads and through the Waipoua Forest where we checked out Tane Mahuta. There is a good wide board walk with hand rails to get there and at the start are foot baths and sprays against Kauri Die Back. The lunch stop at Opononi was an enjoyable laid back casual one. The four routes from there had two using the Rawene Ferry and two going via Kaikohe. Both had a tarseal and a gravel choice. The Kaikohe tarseal route went across to Kerikeri and up HW10 to Manganui. The gravel route went through Okaihau then right then 6kms north turned into Puketi Road to the Puketi Forest then left onto Waiere Road to Kaeo and then to Manganui. The Rawene Ferry option for tarseal went via Brodwood, Herekino, Ahipara, Kaitaia and then to Manganui. The Gravel option went to Mangamuka Bridge then north to turn right into Iwitaua Road then left into Fern Flat Road did a few more turns to end up at Taipa and then Manganui. (When we took a group from EBOP to Taipa several years ago we used these gravel roads). The dinner on the Saturday night was at the Manganui Cruising Club which was an excellent venue right on the waterfront at Mill bay. On Sunday we headed back to Whangarei via Paihia, Opua, Russell and Oakura. On the way up we got to Auckland on Friday afternoon with the usual stops and starts and delays. We had allowed an extra hour to cope with them and needed most of it. On the way home on Monday we took HW16 and HW20 and got to Auckland just before lunch and had a smooth trip through with no stops, which was great. Photos in order: 1 At the start , Northland Club Rooms 2 Tane Mahuta 3 Lunch at Opononi 4 Opononi from the wharf
