Chairman’s Report: January 2024 Happy New Year everybody. I hope 2024 is already off to a good start for you all. It feels like December just disappeared in a flash. I’m told it was good fun and I’m inclined to believe that is true based on the few bits that I can remember clearly. Another very enjoyable classic car breakfast got the month off to a good start and as usual this was well attended by VCC members. It seems that the event has settled in well to the new location and is continuing to attract new and interesting vehicles for us all to check out. Our annual Christmas celebration was an excellent day out. The Kawerau Christmas parade was well supported by our club members and the crowds that gathered to watch the parade certainly appreciated seeing the classic and vintage cars participating in the community event. Following the parade, it was off to Gay and Harry’s house for lunch in the garden. As they have done for several years now Gay and Harry did a wonderful job hosting our club members for a very enjoyable afternoon. My boys enjoyed a swim in the pool even if it wasn’t quite as warm as I told them it would be. Now summer is in full swing we should be all set to get out and make the most of the warm weather. I’m looking forward to seeing you all again soon for summer motoring here in the Eastern Bay and beyond. ____________________________________________________________________________Bevan

Morris Million Winner
Bruce Seddon
If you are a regular reader of the Whakatane Beacon you will recall two articles about John and his Morrie in early December celebrating another show win. This is to record John’s efforts in the branch’s archive. John Twaddle and his lilac Morris Minor have proudly succeeded in winning Best Car in Show at the 2023 Morris Minor National Convention held in Tauranga last Labour Weekend. John was determined to defend the title won at the previous convention and did so this year with a perfect 500 point score. This Morris is one of 350 two door saloons built by BMC to celebrate the Minor being the first British car to reach a million sales. Built for release in 1961 these cars were all to the standard specification for the high light 2-doors and were all finished in lilac paintwork. John’s car is #197 of the 350. 30 were built as LHD, and the remainder 320 were for RHD markets. Many of us know that John is a Morris Minor tragic and this car was acquired on the basis that one is never enough. It was purchased through eBay from Ireland on the assurance that it was in concours condition and shipped out to New Zealand in May 2012. On arrival it was apparent that John was the victim of Irish blarney and his “sight unseen” purchase had significant rust issues. Determined to restore a milestone car John has over the years with the help of a number of Whakatane’s best automotive tradesmen returned the Morrie to its original glory, and then continued to work on improving its condition for judging at successive Morris Minor National Conventions as targets. Over the years John and the lilac Morris have achieved some of the higher scores in judging until two years ago he won Best in Show. This year he has repeated the win, but with a perfect score. I saw the car occupying a hoist at Hub Auto Clinic prior to the October show and every bolt shone, there was no dirt or grime to be seen, and the traditional British oil leaks were nowhere to be seen. How do you know if there is oil in the engine if it isn’t leaking out? Well done John, I could see you had a super clean winner.
John Twaddle and lilac Morris Million. Does the Morris own John or is it the other way round?
