Chairmans Report
As I write this report winter is officially over and spring is off to a magnificent start here in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. I have spent the day giving the Valiant a good once over to make sure it is all set for upcoming events.
During August I attended the VCC AGM hosted by the Nelson Branch. The club in Nelson did an excellent job of running the weekend making for an enjoyable trip south. There were many topics of discussion throughout the meeting, and I noted a few highlights that will be of interest to our branch members (some of you know what happened to my actual notes). The Goddard Trophy was awarded to Steve and Sue Keys for their 5-year restoration of a 1938 Texaco Tanker, taking it from a rusty hulk to the concours condition beauty it is today. This is an outstanding restoration and Steve and Sue are thoroughly deserving of recognition for their efforts. The 2026 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring has been awarded to Nelson Branch. I am sure this will be a wonderful event hosted in a beautiful part of New Zealand. The revised VCC budget and club annual subscription was a topic of hot debate with much to be considered by the executive. After consideration of the options available to us the matter was put to a vote and the executive voted in favour of increasing the annual subscription to cover the increased costs of producing the Beaded Wheels magazine. Changes to the Incorporated Societies Act were also on the agenda with a legal expert providing a presentation to the executive. Deciding on the best governance and management structure for the club will be a lengthy process however the changes to the act do represent a good opportunity for the club to consider the options and make any changes that may be necessary to ensure the organisation is set up well for the future.
During August the club also hosed our annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us this year with steady rain falling on the day. Despite the weather local car enthusiasts still came out to support the event and we were successful in raising much needed funds for our local Cancer Society. A big thanks to our members who supported the rally and an extra thanks to everyone who helped with running the event on the day.
Warmer weather is on the way so let’s get out and enjoy it!

Eastern Bay of Plenty - Gisborne Annual Inter-Club Weekend
How it all began:
In 1986 then Club Captain Lou Emeny suggested that our Branch join with the Gisborne Branch for a get-together weekend. Gisborne were approached and they thought it was a good idea.
A friend of Lou knew a sheep farmer up Te Wera Road at Matawai, who had a shearing shed with a toilet and a shower, with a large flat area, great for camping. Well the toilet worked but the shower was a different story! The first weekend in November 1986 was the date set.
After a cold beer we drove the dusty Te Wera Road to the campsite, where we set up our tents etc., getting wood for a bonfire to keep warm as it is cold up in those hills even in November and of course it was Guy Fawkes weekend and there were kids and grandkids to entertain.
Maybe after a few drinks 12.
After a BBQ Pot Luck type dinner, fire crackers for the kids and big kids, then off to our tentsNext morning the whole area was covered in fog.
After breakfast a gymkhana was set up to decide who was the winning Branch and after an early lunch we headed home after a great weekend and agreeing to do it again next year.
We had the campout for another two or three years before it ran its course, but because it was such a good idea for an inter-branch event, it was decided that on alternative years each Branch would host the other, alternating between Gisborne and the Eastern Bay.
There is a trophy for the winning Branch of the competition run, gymkhana or both and a trophy for the most "entertaining member". We start the weekend with a burger meal on Friday night and a full sit down meal on the Saturday night, followed by a quiz or two and then the results of the competitive run, which is entertainment in its self and announcement of who was the most entertaining.
Even though the first campout was 37 years ago, there are still a few members from both Branches who were there at the original campout and still participate in the event to this day, some driving the same cars 37 years later.
It has been a great social get-together for both Branches and may it continue for many years to come. Les.

Bathtub Test
During a visit to my Doctor, I asked him, “How do you determine whether an older person should be put in an old age home?”
“Well,” he said “we fill up a bathtub”
“Then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub.”
“Oh, I understand” I said.
“A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or teacup.”
“No” he said,
“A normal person would pull the plug. So do you want a bed near the window?”
