Chairman’s Report:

Well it’s that time of the month again to write a few lines, while Gail is toiling away on the magazine, I’ve been playing in the garage with the car’s getting a couple ready for their WOF’s which seems to be getting harder to pass, is it the testers getting more picky or does somebody want our old cars off the road.

The old MGB failed it’s WOF a while ago the tester said “there is something wrong with the steering rack” I asked him what it was, he “didn’t know, just something was wrong”. I took the car home, checked the oil and the preload on the bearings and the rack and took it back “still not right” according to him and his boss agreed with him. So home again, removed the rack and pinion steering assembly, stripped down totally and presented it back to the garage, they looked over it very carefully and said “there was nothing wrong with it”. I presented the car back for a check and received the WOF sticker.

What was the problem here, were they concerned that the steering rack and pinion was faulty or were they fishing for a bit of work, or are the powers that be getting harder on the WOF testing. Whatever it is, it cost me about 6 hours to prove there was nothing wrong with the steering. Unfortunately I have heard from other people with older cars similar stories. Maybe the modern mechanics/WOF testers don’t understand older vehicles.

October has been a bit of a quiet month. We had the Classic Car Breakfast where we had only 3 of our member cars and maybe 6 or so other classic cars there, it wasn’t raining but the forecast was for rain, so perhaps that was the reason for the small attendance, or is it losing its appeal, summer will tell.

On October 12th Harry and Gay took 3 other cars for a trip to Rotorua, we were supposed to go to the luge for lunch but we couldn’t make our minds up over the $24 per person for seniors to go up and back down. So we went to a cafe in town for lunch. Then Barry and Marianne took us for a tiki tour of the Rotorua Gardens then out to Lake Tarawera to a couple of interesting spots.

On Monday the 17th we hosted the Central Hawkes Bay touring group for dinner at the Paroa Rugby Clubrooms, a great evening was had and for some of us a good catch up with old friends and acquaintances.

Many thanks to all of our Club Members who helped in some way, preparing food, setting tables, washing dishes, cleaning etc and I know they were happy doing all of this work, because of the laughing and noise that was coming out of the kitchen.

We hosted 28 of Central Hawkes Bay for the dinner and 26 of our own Members. The visitors thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality and meal and many remarked that it was worth more than the $15 that they paid. I could go on and on... but I won’t, except to say that we have a great Branch with many Members ready to jump in and help in any way that they can. What a great bunch. This is what being a Club is all about.

Drive safe and enjoy life, Les. .2.
