Ithasbeenoneofthosemonthswhentheredidnotseemtobeenoughtimetodo allthatwasrequired.Itwastheproblemwiththecomputerthatgotmeofftoa slowstart,thenitwasgettingittobehave,andthatwasfollowedbythenewlyelectedsecretarygettingstuckintheSouthIslandbyferrycancellationsdueto stormsandhavingtomissclubnight.That,alongwithallthatwasgoingonin myprivatelife,meanttherewasnotagreatdealoftimelefttodomuchatall.

Theonlyconsolationwasthatthetimewentsofastthatitwasalloverbeforeit seemedtobestarting.IhopeIamnottheonlypersoninthisworldwhojustruns outofdayseverymonth,andthatisjustafternotenoughdaysintheweek,orfor thatmatter,notenoughhoursintheday.

Allthataside,wedidgetthere,Ithink.Theclubmeeting,followedbythe46th AGM,wassuchasuccessandtobeabletoshowsuchrespecttooneofourown wastheclimax.ItiswithmanythankstoDianeQuarrie,presidentofVCCNZ, thatshewasabletocomedownforthenightandattendtotheactualpresentation oftheaward.

Thefollowingsupperwasagodsendanditputtheicingonthecakeastheysay.I, forone,liketheopportunitytohangaboutand‘kickatyreortwo’withothersof alikemind.Iamsopleasedtoseesomanypeopleattendingthemeetingsthese daysandIhopethatIreaditrightinasmuchasIfeelthemembersareenjoying themeetingsandthegettogethersthatweareworkingon.Icanonlyrepeatthat itisuptoeachofustogetthebestoutofwhatthereistopartakein.

Lookingahead,thereareanumberofactivitiesplanned.Weareintendingtodo differentthingssothereissomesortofinterestforeverybody.Iunderstandthat theWorkingBeeonSaturdaywaswellattended,andsoontherewillbethe garageraidmidweek,sokeepthemidweekdayavailable.Seedetailslaterinthis issue,andaremindere-mailwillalsobesent.Stilllookingforwardtoanyideas thatwecangetoutanddo,orbepartof.Getthethinkingcapsonanddon’tbe backwardcomingforward.

Iwouldliketodoashortrecapofsomeoflastyear'sactivitiesthatthe branchenjoyed,astherewasonlyaverbalpresentationattherecentAGM.

Firstly,Iwouldliketowelcomethenewcommittee,knowingtheywill guideourbranchinthesameenthusiasticmannerithasbeenmanagedin thepast.

DuringthelasttwelvemonthswehaveemergedfromtheCovidshadow fairlysuccessfullyasmostorganizedrunsandrallieshavebeenwell attended.SomeofthehighlightshavebeenannualTararuaTrundle,Night OwlRally,TramsatQE2Park,HorseshoeBendRallyandtheTedGreen MemorialMotorcycleRally.Wehavealsohadsuccessfulsocialevents includingluncheonsandinterestingmeetingspeakers.Itwouldberemiss ofmenotthementiontheannualswapmeet,whichwasagainnotonly goodforthefinancialreturn,butmoreimportantlybroughttogetherso manyclubmembersworkingasagreatteamtomaketheeventso successful.

Forsomeofourmemberswantingmorechallengingralliesour neighbouringBranchesprovidedthesespreadthroughouttheyear.We havebeenwellrepresentedandusuallycomeawaywithsomeprizeevenif itisonlyBestDressedLadyorGentleman!

AFiftyYearMembershipAward.Tomostpeopleitwouldbean impossibledreamtobeamemberofaclub,Idon’tcareofwhat,forthat periodoftimeandstillhavetheenthusiasmthatisstillshownbythis recipient,PeterDriesNightingale.

Iwouldgoasfarastosaythattherewouldbeveryfewmembersinvolved inthecompleteVintageCarClubofNewZealandformorethantwenty years,whohadnotmet,experiencedinonewayoranother,orattheleast haveheardofthisman,PeterNightingale.

Forme,Icanonlyboasttohavehadthepleasureofmeeting,andthen gettingtoknowPeteronapersonalbasis,overmyshorttermof membershipattheHorowhenuaBranchoftheVCC.Iwasverysoonto experiencethatnomatterwhattheexerciseoractivitythatwastaking placeattheclub,Peterwouldbethereanditwasagainobviousthathis inputwasalwaysconsideredandrespected.

Itwaswithagreatdealofpridethatweasaclubcould,atthe46thAnnual GeneralMeeting,makeaspecialpresentationofthisfiftyyearmembership awardtoPeter,whoisactuallyinhisfiftythirdyearofmembershipofthe NewZealandVintageCarClub.With theassistanceoftheNationalPresident, DianeQuarrie,andinthepresenceofhis daughterLarkinandhissonTony,Peter receivedhisawardwiththeusual ‘what’sallthefussabout’attitudethat seemstobepartofhisnormal demeanour.Itwasveryinterestingto listentotheaddressgivenbyDiane(see transcript)duringthepresentationand thentohearwhatPeterhadtosayinhis addressofreply.

TheinvolvementandinputbyPeterover theyearsisfartoolongtoincorporatein thisreportbutletmesaythatwhatI havelearnedofhisworkinmyshort timehere,ismind-bogglingtosaythe least,andIwouldgoasfarastosaythat Iamonlyawareofasmallportionof whatcouldbeoutthere.

IoffermycongratulationstoPeter,andIamsurethatIspeakforall membersoftheHorowhenuaVintagecarClubinsodoing.Weallvalue yourcontinuedmembershipandwishyouallthebestforthefuture.

PeterNightingale-50yearsmembership

Peterfirstbecameinterestedincarswhenhewasnineteenandneededto gettoDannevirkefromPalmerstonNorthtomeethisgirl-friendShona.He purchaseda1928FordModelATudorwhichhecalled“Gertrude”.Many hair-raisingtripsthroughtheManawatuGorgeensued!

TimepassedandPeterandhisbrideShonamovedintothefamilyfarmin Dannevirkeasshare-milkers. In1969Petersawanadvert foracarwithwarrantand registrationinWoodvillefor $125,sowentdownand bought“Matilda”,a1931 FordModelA.BothPeter andShonadroveitasitwas roomierthantheir100E Prefect.Aftersome modificationsand improvements,“Matilda”is stillgoingwelltoday.

PeterjoinedtheManawatuBranchoftheNewZealandVintageCarClub inSeptember1971andwasinvolvedasamarshalontheDannevirke sectionofthe1972InternationalRally.In1973thefamilymovedtoLevin. Peterandafewotherenthusiaststravelledforsomeyearstomeetingsin Manawatu,andeventuallyasub-branchwasformedinLevin.Thefirst MotorShowwasheldon22ndNovember1975attheLevinShowgrounds. MoneyraisedwenttotheThorneycroftRestorationFund.Thiswasthe firstlocaleventasasub-branchofManawatu.“Matilda”wasondisplay forthefirsttime.OntheformationoftheHorowhenuaBranchinOctober 1977PeterandShonacompletedthefirstBranchRally.Thiswasthestart ofthe“TararuaTrundle”,whichisstillheldeveryyear.

Peterwasinstrumentalinsettinguptwoorthreedifferenthomesforthe Branch,allexistingbuildingswhichneededtobemodifiedtotheBranch’s needs.AstheBranchwasgrowingquiteconsiderably,by2006itwas decidedthatbiggerpremiseswereneededwithbetteraccessfromtheroad toaccommodateallthecars.PeterwasontheboardoftheAP&I ShowgroundsandwasabletoconvincethemtolettheBranchuseacorner onwhichtoerectabuildingasitsclubrooms.Withalotofhardworkfrom

manymembers,thenewbuildingwasopenedin2007,andisacredittoall involved.

PeterservedontheBranchcommitteeasChairman,ClubCaptain,Branch Delegate,BeadedWheelsScribeand“Spark”Editor.Healsoranseveral motorshows,organisednumerousrallies,andwasinvolvedinseveral historicaleventsincludingtheLevinCentenaryin2006andthededication ofCenotaphParadein2010.Healsoplayedapartinsourcingvehiclesand driversfortheCentenaryoftheendofWorldWar1heldinWellingtonin 2018.Allinall,iftherewasanythingthatneededdoing,findingorfixing, Peterwasthemanforthejob.Hewasthepowerbehindtherestorationand erectionofthehistoric1895windmillonlandbesidetheclubroomsin 2008,followedin2013bytheinstallationofthePoroutawhaoFlourMill, whichwasoriginallybuiltin1850onPaeroaRoad,Levinandnowstands inanewbuildingbesidethewindmill.

Inrecognitionofhisconsiderableeffortsovertheyears,Peterwasmadea LifeMemberoftheHorowhenuaBranchin2006.

Peterhasrestoredseveralvehiclesovertheyears,includingaTTFord truck.Healsoowneda1924TTHucksterbutdecidedtosellthatoneand concentrateonthetruck.Ofcourse,hestillhas“Matilda”whichhe restoredbacktoitsoriginal“Phaeton”waybackintheearly1970s.Peter hashelpedmanypeoplewiththeirrestorationsandisamineof informationonallkindsofsubjects.Hehasalwaysbeenwillingtohelp anybody.

HorowhenuaBranchconsidersitselfveryfortunatethat,allthoseyearsago whenPeterwasateenagerinEngland,hemetamancalledEdmund HillarynotlongafterhehadconqueredEverest.Hewasvisitingfamilyat afarmnextdoortowherePeterlivedandinspiredhimtocometoNew Zealandtoseekhisfortune.ForsomereasonPetercametotheNorth IslandtoafarmintheManawatu.Therest,astheysay,ishistory.

IamalsoworkingonatripuptoOhakeaBigginHillMuseum,whereBrendon Deerehasquiteacollectionofwarbirds.Aweeproblemwiththesecurityup there,nowtheairforcehavesomebrandnewaircrafttoplaywith,theyhave lockedthejointuplikeFortKnox!Thismeansthatwewillnotbeabletodrive ourowncarsontothebase,sowewillhireabustotakeusthere.Wewillboard thebusatourclubroom,datetobeconfirmedforsometimeinSeptember.

CHRYSLERGASTURBINECAR

IwasonanautomotiveblockcourseatPetoneTechnicalInstitutewhen oneoftheChryslerTurbinecarsarrivedherein1964andtheclasswent toseeitatToddMotorsinPetone.Weweretoldbytheaccompanying Chryslertechnician,thatturbinepoweredcarsweregoingtobetheway ofthefuture"verysoon."Whenwe returnedtoclass,ourinstructor askedusforouropinions.

Isaidthatitwasnotgoingtohappen! Why?Becauseofthehighcostof themotortomanufacture!

Interestingly,thisdocumentary(link below)makesthesamepointasI madeatthattime.

Theotherfactor,whichwasn't aroundin1964,butwhichcame inlater,wastheU.S.exhaust emissionsstandard,whichkilled thedealaltogether.Theturbine wasa"dirty"motorinthat regardbeingmulti-fuelled,assomefuelsburntcreatedmuchmore harmfulfumesthanothers.

Thiswasagreatevent,withagoodturnoutofclubmembers,andweallenjoyedaneasy runandanafternoonteaservedatDaveandDebbieHobbs’sremarkablemuseum/shed. Ourladiesgottodrive,orweredrivenbyhusbandsdressedindrag!Abitofaworry there?

Theonlyonewhodidn’tshowupattheendpointwasLindaGill,whomaywellstillbe outtheresomewhere.AnyoneseeingthesilverBeamertellherit’ssafetocomehome! Theweatherwasnottoobad,exceptforatorrentialshoweronthewayuptoFoxton. MytinyMGLucaswiperswerestrugglingabit!Otherwisejustaseriesofshortsharp frontsgoingthrough.

TheoverallwinnerswereBevandBasilGowenlock.Congratulationstoyouboth.Aprize forbestafternoonteacakewastakenbyGregOliver,whoswearshebakedithimself! Andtherewasaspecialpointsprizeforroadkillcollectedontheway:yes,nokidding! ThiswaswonbyKerryandJohnRapley.Ithinkitwasjudgedonpurestinkyness!

Theonlyotherproblemwasthatwelosttworallymarkers,takenbypersonsunknown. Onewastossedoverthefenceatthegraveyard.Thankspeople!!! Thereweresomelovelyladies(??)present.TheMiss HorowhenuaVCCprizehadtogotoMissVeronicaHeath,very svelteinasilksheathdresstoppedbyafurwrap(Thefurwas notroadkill).

Around40peopleenjoyedalookbehindthescenesatSouthward Museumonalovelysunnyday.Manyarrivedearlyandhadanhourorso inthemainmuseumbeforeourtouroftheworkshopsandshedswhich storethevehicles,sparepartsandartefactsnotnormallyshowntothe public.

WorkshopManagerJohnBellamoreprovidedlotsofamusinganecdotes andansweredaconstantstreamofquestions.

Completewithafully-equippedmachineshop,woodworkshopand panel/paintarea,thereusedtobeastaffof6carryingoutfullrestorations, butnowadaysjust2peoplearekeptbusymaintainingaround50ofthe museum'scollectioninrunningorder.

Southward'sstocksofsparepartsaretrulymind-bogglingand,bywayof anexample,JohnBellamorehadlaidoutonatrestletableaselectionof theirbrass-eraheadlampsforustosee.

ReceivingsomeroutinemaintenanceatthetimeofourvisitwasaTata Nano,presentedtothemuseumbytheBritishHighCommissioner.Ithad beengiventoherduringapreviouspostinginIndiabutitcan'tbeused onNZroadsbecauseitdoesn'tmeetoursafetystandards.TheTataNano waslaunchedinIndiain2008atapriceequivalenttoNZ$2,500,aimedat buyerswhohadpreviouslyonlybeenabletoaffordamotorcycleor scooter.ItlooksjustlikeamodernJapanesecitycarandhasanallaluminium624cc,2-cylinder,OHCengineundertherearseats.However, itwasn'tasalessuccessandlessthan300,000weremadebefore productionendedin2018.

Thesunnydayencouragedagoodturnoutofclub-eligiblecarsranging fromanAustin7toanArmstrongSiddeleyandanE-TypeJaguar,andthe daywasroundedoffwithanexcellentlunchattheAnzilHungarian RestaurantatnearbyLindale.

Twoofthemostinterestingvehicleswereonecladincoppercoatingand theotheraPhilippine's"Jeepny"overlydecoratedwiththebiggest collectionofrear-viewmirrorsallmountedonthebonnet.Notforany usefulpurpose,butjustasaformofdecoration!

AnOHVconversion foraModelTFord wasondisplay. Ithinkitwascalled the"RedDevil" conversion,used formotorracingin thatera.

Wealsowenttoviewthe workshops,partsstorage andothervehiclesnoton displayheldinshedsout theback.

Averywell-equipped workshopwasondisplay, largelynotusednowas norestorationistaking place.Theplaceis stockedtofullcapacity withvehiclesnow.

Adjacenttotheworkshopswasa sparessectionwherepartswere stored.Mostofthesparesappeared tobepre-orjustpost-WWIvintage. Alargecollectionofkeroseneor acetyleneheadlampsandotherlamps wereonshelves.

Theywillsellsparesfromoutoftheir sparescollection,Iwasadvised. ItlookslikeCallumhassome competitionnow!

FiveFordSheadedofffromHorowhenuatoparticipateinthe2023version ofWanganui’sAnnualRally.ThereasonforFordSisthatleadingortrailing fiveFORDswasthesingleSAABhandledbythe“V”team.Bloodygood mixersthatlot,astheypouroilintothepetrol,whereusFordershave beenknowntodripitinmostinappropriateplaceslikeMILdriveways. Anyway,backtoabrightSundaymorningattheracecourse.AnIsleof ManTTstartwasusedwherecarscouldroll,roarorwhimperawayat1 minuteintervalsonauptothreehourcruiseofroadstothewestoftown. Theorganiserachievedaroutewhichincludedonlyoneshortsectionof StateHighway.Thisallowedhimtocreateasingletimedsectionlasting 2.5hoursforthosetootlingalongattheirprescribedspeedof26mph. Thosefastunits,doing36mph,hadfinishedlunch(attheclubrooms)and wereoffontheafternoonrunbeforewe,Matildaandco,arrived.Outto KaiIwiinthewestwithapleasantrunbacktotheriverpasttheoldFert Work.Attheclubroomsagainwedroppedoffourfilledsilentcheckcard (all7).Thetraditionalcuppawasmissingsowewenttothe accommodationforarestandpretty-upbeforeareturntotheracecourse fordinner.Sadlywe,SaabandFords,failedtocomeuptoscratchinthe competitionbutwedidhaveonesuccess.Car37’snavigator,JulieRiepen, wasselectedastheBestDressedLadyinherversionofthe30sfrock,fur andhat.Sheknowshowtomakehermark.

SomeheadedhomeonSaturday,withtheremainderleavingonSunday. Theonlyexcitementwasseeingthreefireappliancestendingtoasingle carfireaboveDunningsLake.Nope,itwasn’tahotvintage,justaverysad blackenedmodern.
