AtaFordshareholders’meetingpriorto1906,theshareholdersdecided thatFordneededtobuilda6-cylindercarthatHenryobjectedtobuild, buttheshareholdersinsistedsohebuiltone,theModelKFord. ThisannoyedHenryandhegotoffsidewithhisshareholdersbecauseof thisissue.Henrywantedtobuild cheapcarsthatwould concentrateonvolumesalesand stayawayfromluxurymodels.In fact,theModelKFordsoldquite well,withover500builtinthe years1906-1908,financingthe introductionoftheModelTFord in1908.
Atanothershareholders’meetingHenrysuggestedthatFordshouldbuild tractors,buttheshareholdersoverruledHenryonceagain,which infuriatedHenryashefelttherewasamarketfortractors,soHenry devisedaplantogetridofhisshareholders’influence.
HefirstannouncedhewasgoingtoretirefromtheFordMotorCoand handtherunningovertohissonEdsel,whowasinhisearly20s.TheFord sharesdroppedinprice.ThenHenryannouncedhewasgoingtocome outof"retirement"andformanotherFordMotorCotorunalongsidethe onemangedbyEdsel.TheFordsharesplummeted.Secretly,Henryand Edselwentandboughtupallthecheapshares,thenoncethatwas accomplishedHenryannouncedhewasgoingtocomebacktorunthe FordMotorCoonceagain.
Atthenextshareholders’meeting,HenryannouncedthatFordwasgoing tobuildtractors.Theshareholdersobjectedonceagainandreminded Henrythatthismatterwasdecidedbeforeandrejectedbythe shareholders.

OnWednesday26AprilthirtyfivemembersfromHorowhenuaandWellington branchesvisitedtheMuseumofAudioVisualArtsandSciencesatCoronation HallinFoxton.Thehallwasbuiltin1911tocommemoratethecoronationof KingGeorgeV.
Currentlyitisundergoingearthquakestrengthening,whichwasappropriate withalarge5.9magnitudeearthquake(andonly21kmsdeep,near PorangahauintheWairarapa)rockingFoxtoninthemorning.Atleastitwasn’t raining!
Thehallwasbuiltasapicturetheatre,anornatecinemawithasinglegiant screen.Thehallhas200artdecoseatsintheupstairsdresscircle.Withover5 millionfeet(over947 miles!)offilmintheir archivesthere’salways somethingnewtoscreen. WemetatCoronationHall at11.00amandJim Harperofthemuseum showedusthefilmThisIs NewZealand,madefor Osaka,Japan’sExpo70. Thiswasabeautifully scenicviewofNew Zealandover50yearsago.
Theguywearingwalk shortsandlongsockswas asighttobehold!WewerealsoshowntwoveryearlyWarnerBrothers cartoonsstarringPorkyPigandSylvesterCat.
Afterthefilmswetouredthemuseum,andenjoyedtheplayingofarestored pianola.AlongwithThisisNewZealandthepianolawasverypopularwiththe group.
FollowingourvisittothemuseumwelunchedatMrsNubbsCafe,inMainRoad, Foxton.We’vedinedtherebeforeandagainthequalityofthefoodwas excellent.
AfterlunchsomemembersvisitedTheRosengeurExhibition"SmellsLike Roses"attheMapunaKabinetArtGallerywithintheDeMolenWindmill complex.Thisisanexhibitionof"OlfactoryArt"or"MultidimensionalArt", whichisapparentlyalltherageintheUSAandJapan.Inessenceyougetthe relatedaromasaswellasthevisualimage.

Henrywasquitetakenwiththesix-cylinderFranklincar,whichusedan aeronauticalLycomingair-cooledengineandthoughthisV8enginecould bebuiltthesameway.Anair-cooledprototypeV8wasmadeandran,but itdevelopedproblemswithconstantoverheatingoftherearcylinders,so theair-cooledconceptwasscrapped. Instead,theV8wasredesignedtobewatercooled.
Problemsdevelopedduringthecastingprocessthough,withblowholes causedbytrappedpocketsofairduringcasting.
ArotatingcastingtablewasdesignedtocastsixV8engineblocksatatime, todriveairpocketsoutofthemoltencastiron.Italsomadethecastiron denserandstrongerintheprocess.
