Itneverceasestoamazemehowtimeseemstogobysofastthesedays. WhenIwasjustayoungbuck,IcouldnotwaituntilIgottobe21andit seemedtotakeanage.Today,timejustseemstoslipawayandallthe thingsthatIintendtodojustdon’tgetdone.MaybeIamjustlosingitbut Idon’tseemtogetenoughdonebeforethesungoesdown,evenwith daylightsavinginplace.
TheClubCaptain’sTriptotheTramswasthemainactivityforthismonth andfromallaccounts,itwasarealsuccess.Nothingtoostrenuousor involvedintherallytogetthere,justabitoftroublewithsomeofthe spellingwhenitcametothenamesofbusinesses,etc.Mindyou,thatwas neveragreatpointinmyeducationatthebestoftimes,anditappearsthat thefiveyearsinStandardThreeobviouslydidnothelpthecause.The TramwaypreservationhasalwaysbeenaninterestofmineinasmuchasI wasayoungpolicemanatthetimewhenthelasttramranfromthe RailwayStationtotheNewtownDepot.Alongwithanotherofmy colleagues,wehadtotravelonthetramtoensurethatitgottoits destinationinonepiece,inthattherewerenottoomanysouvenirsorother keepsakesremovedfromthetram.Itwasstrangetolearnthatthemajority ofthetramswerethendeliberatelysetonfireandthemetallaterdealtwith asscrap.Ithinkthatwhattheyhavedone,andarestilldoing,topreserve thesemachinesisjustmagic.Takeabow!Icannothelpmakinga comparisontowhatalotofourpeoplearedoingwiththeautomobile. Therehasbeenagooddealofactivityintheneighbourhoodwithother clubs’ralliesandalsoaSwapMeetortwothrowninforgoodluck.The HotRodShowinLevinapparentlywasagreatsuccessandtheboysinour Partsdidagreatjobopeningupforthedayaswell. IhavebeenapproachedbyGlennPeach,thecoordinatorofourSwap MeetinMarch,andheislookingtofindoutjustwhattheresponseof membersisgoingtobewhenitcomestothedayofthemeet.Atthisstage heisalittledisappointedwiththeresponsesthathegettingtohisrequests formemberstoputtheirhanduptobeaworker,ahelperortotakeonany taskthatthedaywillrequirefromusall.Ashepointsout,theSwapMeet
istheonerealactivityperyearthatmakesitsomucheasiertofinancethe club.Whatheisaskingforisthateverymemberoftheclubcould,and should,beinapositiontodosomethingsothattheclubdoesnotneedto putoutthehattokeepitrunning.Whatelsecanwedo?Ifallofusdoa bitthenthewholejobwillbedoneandeveryonewillbenefitfromjust givingalittleofyourtime.Thinkaboutit,makethedecisionandlet Glennknowwhereyouare.Surelythatisnotaskingtoomuch. WhileBruceisenjoyingsomewellearnedR&R,anotherpeniswriting thismonth'sreport.Withthechangetodaylightsavingthereissupposedly alotmoreusabledaytimetogetjobsdone.Soallthosecarandmotorcycle jobsshouldbewellinhand.
TheManawatuSwapmeetingandtheHotRodShowattheAPIhallhave takenplaceinthelastcoupleofweeks.Nodoubtyouattendedboth.Our lastclubnightspeaker,DerrickHaycockfromPalmerstonNorth,presented aninterestingshowofhisparticipationinthisyear'sIrishmanRallyinthe SouthIsland.Within-carvideooftheroads,tracksanddrivingtests,what awonderfuldisplaytotakeustherewithoutfeelingthevibrations. Welldone,andthankyouDerrick. SomememberspaidavisittoRossChurchCarSalesatParaparaumu,with awideselectionofcars,fromAlfaRomeo,Jaguar,Rover,MazdatoMorgan. ThanksRossforlettingusvisityourworld.

On18thSeptemberweenjoyedasimple“notricks”(accordingtothe organiser)rallytothetrammuseumatPaekakariki.Thereweremorethan twentycarsattheclubroomsforthestart,andthecrewsembarkedona coursethatmeanderedaroundtheeasternareaofHorowhenuaandKapiti.
Uponarrivalatthetrammuseum,weweregivenamostinterestingtalk aboutthehistoryofthetramserviceinWellington.Thenwewereableto inspectthemuseumandtheworkshops.Itisgreatthatsomanyofthese oldtramshavebeensavedandarenowintheprocessofbeingrestored. Manyspentyearsparkedoutsidebeforethelargeshedscouldbebuilt,and nowallthetramsaresheltered.
Therearefourinrunningcondition,andwewereabletotakeatripon thelinedowntothebeach.Oh,thememoriescamefloodingbackof clatteringaroundthestreetsofWellington.Orperhaps,ofslidingoffour motorcyclesandpushbikesonthewettramlines.
NearthetrammuseuminQueenElizabethParkisadisplayto commemoratethevisitofthousandsofAmericansoldierswhowere campedherewhiletrainingforbattleinthePacificIslandsduringWorld War2.Noteworthyisareplicaofahut,fullyfurnishedwithtypical militaryitemsoftheperiod,whichhousedfourmen.Therehadbeen hundredsofthesehutsspreadoveralargeareaofthesandhills.

AsourownDaffodilDayeventwascancelledduetobadweather,Murraywas advisedbytheHumberHillmanClubthattheWanganuiVCCrallywasstillon.He tookhisHillmanHunteralongtothisevent,whichwassponsoredbyFord,who donatedalotofprizes.Iwentashisnavigatorandwhatafuntimewehad.96 vehiclesofeveryageandmakemetattheMemorialParkat12:30pmtohear therules.Rallytobe2hoursintotal,lossof1pointperminuteoverallotted time,nilpointsif30minutesormorelate!!Withstillnoideaofwherewewere going,wepassedthetimewithcoffee,rafflesandcar“ohhingandarrhring”until timeofdeparture.Aseachvehicleleft,wewereonlythengiventhreeA4pages ofaddressesanddetailswehadtocollectfromeach,withthegreaterdistance travelledhavingahigherpointsvalue,eg:WanganuitoHalcombe,collecta playingcardandreturntostartontimewasworth158points.Quiteanumber ofpoints,althoughlowinvalue(10,20etc),couldbegainedbyjustwalking aroundtheCBD.Notforusthough,wewantedtodrive!KaiIwibeach, Castlecliffe,andjustabouteverywhereinbetweenallworthmid30tohigh50s inpoints!Can'ttellyouhowmanytimeswesawthesamecars,eithercoming towardsus,orthenfollowingus.TwoyoungwomeninabeautifulFiatBambina wesawmanytimes,withthepoorlittlemotorscreamingastheyspedalong.All greatfun.Idothinktheorganisersweretryingtoshowcasetheirresthomesto usolderfolks(includeme)aswehadtodriveintofourormorearoundthe wholedistrict,tocollectdetailsofspeedlimitsinsidethegroundsorwhenthe mailwascollected,sonojustdrivingbythegate.Atoneofthemallthe "residents"weresittingontheverandahandwaving,bitofexcitementforthem asmuchasus.Well,enoughsaid.Itwasanawesomeafternoonandthe organisersputonaterrificevent,whichmusthaveraisedagoodamountof $$foraworthycharity.Oh,bestbittoendwith;MurrayandIcamein42ndwith 363points!1stplacescored715points.SoabigthankstoMurrayfor(a)inviting meand(b)forhisgoodmemory,becauseassoonasItoldhimwhatwewere lookingfor,Ihadforgottenit!Hopeyouenjoyreadingthisasmuchaswedid doingtheevent.

Afterashort welcomeand introductiontothe business,Ross invitedustowander aroundandviewhis currentstockofcars whichincludeda 1951Jaguar XK120,a1960Mk2 Jaguar3.4,a1973 Fiat125T,a1974 MorganPlus8,a1976MGBGTanda1998AlfaRomeoSpyder. Therewasalsoabigscreenshowingsomegreatfootagefromthe Goodwood Revival,anda hugedisplay ofold motoring signsand posters coveringmost ofthe showroom walls.
Healsoshowedushisprideandjoy,a1955Rover90,whichhasnowbeen inthefamilyfor67yearsandisdefinitelynotforsale.Itwasboughtbrand newbyhisgrandfatherandRosshashappymemoriesofslidingabouton theredleatherupholsteryasasmallboyduringmanytripsinthecarwith hisgrandad.
Whilewanderingaroundchattingwithotherclubmembersandinspecting thecarsforsale,wealsohadtocompleteaquizsetbyRosscomprising bothmotoringandgeneralknowledgequestions.Theworthywinners wereRitaandMartinPurdywhowerepresentedwithabottleofbubblyby ourhost.
Icalledanoldschoolfriendandaskedwhatwashewasdoing.Hereplied thathewasworkingon"Aqua-thermaltreatmentofceramics,aluminiumand steelunderaconstrainedenvironment."Iwasimpressed,butonfurther enquiring,Ilearnedthathewaswashingdisheswithhotwaterunderhis wife'ssupervision.

Helicalcutgearsarequieterinoperationincomparisontospurgears,but dohaveaproblemofaxialthrustdevelopingalongtheshaft. InthecaseofsecondgearengagementonearlyEnglishFords,thiscan causethegearboxtoslipoutof2ndgearwhenthetwothrustwashers eithersideof2ndgear,and/or2ndgearitself,becomeworn. Theactioniscausedby2ndgearmovingtowardstheoutersynchromesh hubin"drivemode"andawayfromthesynchromeshhubonthe "overrun"wherethewheelsaredrivingthemotor. Sincethepressureappliedbetween2ndgearengagement&theouter synchrohubisgreaterin"drive"thanonthe”overrun”,a"nudging"effect occurs,pushingtheoutersynchromeshhubgraduallyawayfrom2ndgear andintime,disengagesthe2ndgeardrive. Thetestforthisproblemistodrivethevehicleandobservethe movementofthe gearleverin
2ndgearwhenthe throttleisopened andclosed,which isindicatedbya verticalmovement ofthegearleverup anddownifthe thrustwashers and/or2ndgear areworn.
Normally,thethrustwashers,andmaybe2ndgear,wouldbereplaced,but an"ElCheapo"repairistosimplyincreasethedetentpressureonthe 2ndandtopgearselectorspring,bypackingoutthedetentspring.

ThiswastheopeningparagraphfromaSparesReportinJuly2017,thatwouldgo ontopaintapoorpictureofmotoringauctionsinNewZealand.Sincethenthere hasbeenamajorimprovementonmanyfronts,whichisfantastic,howeveritonly takesoneClassicMotorcycleClubintheTaranakiareatoputeverythingback years.
Lastmonthonclubnightitcametomynoticethatthisclubwashavingan EnglishMotorcycleGarageSale(ofalatemember’scollection)inUrenui(North Taranaki). Thatverynightane-mailwassentofftotheirsecretary,askingformore informationandphotos,butIreceivedoneverybluntandveryrudereply. Whichwastoorudetoeventhinkaboutwritingithere.Attheendoftheday,if theydon’twishtodoitproperly,thendon’tdoitatall.
