Whataclub,whatamembership,whatateam,allmydoubts andworriesdisappearedonthatoneday.ImustconfessthatI wasgettingalittleworriedleadinguptotheSwapMeetasto theresponsewewouldgetfromthemembersingeneralforthe workandcommitmentonthatoneday.NowIhavetobevery honestandadmitthatthedayreallydidgivemeanenormous voteofconfidenceandIamagaininapositionwhereIcan wakeupeachdaywiththeknowledgethat,infact,thereisa greatmembershipwithintheclubandtheywillrespondtothe call.
Ihavenointentionofselectinganyonememberorevenagroup ofmemberswhenItalkaboutthanksforagreatjob.Itakea greatdealofprideinthankingyou,oneandall,foragreatday andanextremelywelcomeresultwhenitcomesdowntothe returninfinancesfortheclub.Letsseeifthereissomething thatwecandonowforthebettermentandsatisfactionofall memberswithintheclub,afterallitwastheireffortsthatputus inthisenviableposition.
SincetheaboveIhavebeenrequiredtotakeasidestepfora weekortwoandhavelefttherunningoftheclubinthehandsof ourViceChairman.Abigthankstoyou,John,fordoingthis.
No,youhavenotgotridofmeyet.Itwasmydutytobepresent atthegraduationofagrandsonatCanterburyUniversitywhen hereceived,ashedescribedit,theresultofseventeenyearsof
education.Finally,at22yearsofage,hehasprogressedintothe realworldandwillhopefullybeinapositionofenteringthe workforce,earnadecentwage,paytaxesandasIexplainedto him,(withtongueincheek)‘keepmeinthelifestyletowhichI havebecomeaccustomed’.

Whatagreatturnoutwehadofbothvendorsandbuyersforourannual SwapMeet.
Mostimportantlywe,thebranchmembers,workedwellasateamandkept upourreputationofbeingthemostfriendlyswapmeetinthelowerhalfof theNorthIsland.Ofcoursewereapthefinancialrewardsofthat teamwork.Afewyearsagoweconductedasurveytogaugethewantsof ourmembersandwhytheyweremembersofourbranch.Ithinkthebest thingthatweofferisdiversityandfriendship.
Someofourmembersjustwantaccesstosparepartsorthelibrary,others likemyself,likebeingtestedbychallengingrallies,whilesomeothersare quitehappytohaveanatterabouttheolddaysoveracupoftea.Thisis whatmakesupourbranch.Whatgotalotofustogetherrecentlywasthe swapmeet,soabigthankyoutoallourbranchmemberswhotookpart andespeciallythekeyorganisers.Youdidagreatjob.
Thesocialsideofourbranchisveryimportantandinthatveinremember wehaveamid-winterluncheoncomingupinJuneandtheAGMwhenwe shallmakesomespecialpresentations.
InMaywewillberunningaLadiesRally....blokesbebraveandchange sides,haveacrackatnavigating.It’snotaseasyasitlooks.Ladies,ifyou arenotcomfortableintheclubcarbringyourdailyrunner,itismore importantyoutakepartandhavefunthanthevehicleyouaredriving.

Actuallyitdidn’tfeellikedawnat 5am.Blackasinkandtherewe were,theswapmeetcrewallset togo,justhopingfortherainto stopandthecustomerstostart rollingin!.
Androllintheydid.Iwasawee bitconcernedaboutthewetgrass gettingchewedup,butonan after-playinspectionitwasall goodandAP&I,ourlandlordssotospeak,wereallhappy.
Ihavebeentoldthatthetraderswereaboutthesameinnumberasprevious years,butmaybethebuyerswerealittlefewer(weather?)butourtakingswere enoughtomakeourtreasurer,Jackie,smile.
Iammostimpressedatsomanyofourmembersturningupandgettingstuckin. Youalldidwell,people,sogiveyourselvesabigpatontheback.Ithinkweall musthavebeentiredlittleenergizerbunniesattheendoftheday,andthe after-cleanupbeerswentdownatreat!

IonceworkedwithachapwhojoinedtheN.Z.ArmyTerritorialsin1938. OnhisfirstdayatTrenthamCamp,hisgroupofsixwastoldtoboardaMorris 10armytruckandtheyweredrivento Wellingtonwharvesandtakentoa wharfshed.
InsidewereparkedsixnewMorris8 convertibles.Eachvehiclewasallocated adriverwhowastoldtogoandgasup, thendrivethemtoTrenthamCamp workshops.Whenallarrived,theywere toldtogotothestoreandgetoveralls, apaintbrushandacanofkhakipaint. Afterreturningwiththeseitems,theyhadtopaintthecarswiththekhakipaint, includingallthechromework.
Oncedried,theyhadtoremovethe rearseatandthepassenger'sseat.A woodenbenchwasinstalledinstead ofthebackseatandaNo11wireless setinstalledinplaceuponthebench. Thepassenger'sseatwasrefitted, butfacingrearwardsinstead,forthe wirelessoperatortositin.Awhip aerialwasmountedalongsidetheset onthebenchintheback,usedwith therooffoldeddown.Ifitcameonto raintheaerialwasdismantledand theroofputup,eliminatingany morewirelesscontacttoandfrom thevehicle.Communicationsinthe raintovehiclesceased,oncethishappened,obviously!(Nocombatintherain?)

Thedestinationforthiseventhadtobechangedatshortnotice,butavisitto KapitiVapourBlastingwasarrangedforademonstrationoftechniquesfor cleaningaged,corroded,weatheredordirtyobjects.Theproprietor,Nick Sparrow,hasadisplayofitems madeofaluminium,steel,copper, plasticandrubberwhichhehas cleanedonehalfofsothatthe differencecanbeseen.The aluminiumcastingsinthephotoat rightweremaskedoffsothatonlya partwascleaned.Alsoshownarea plasticandcopperelectrical terminalandtworubberengine mounts.
Theprocessinvolvesdirectingahighpressurejetofhotwater(vapour)andan abrasive(secret)sand-likematerialontotheobjectinsideanenclosedcabinet. Unlikewithsandblasting,thiscleanstheobjectbutdoesnoterodethematerial, soisidealfortreatingsofteritemslikealuminium,plasticandrubber.
TwentyorsomembersfromWellingtonandHorowhenuaclubsturnedup. Wehadbeeninvitedtobringasmall componenttobe“fixed”,andDon McAlpinefromourclubhadpartofa fuelpumpfromhisArmstrongSiddeley. Photoatleftshowstwominutes’worth ofblasting.Infiveminutesitlookedlike newagain.

Priortosynchromesh,slidingspurgearswereused,requiringgear changingskillstosynchronisethespeedbetweendrivenanddrivegears inthegearbox,amasterymanydriverscouldn'tmatch,resultingin graunchingandcrashingthegearstogetherwhichcausedexcessivewear anddamagetothetransmission.Hencetheterminologyofa"crash gearbox."

SometimeinAprilwewillpickupatrailer-loadofFord100E Anglia/Prefectparts,alsofromamemberofthepublic. AlsointhemixwasthelastoftheWarrenBirchEstatewhichincludedtwo ofWarren’schildhoodtricycles.ThesewerepurchasedbyaHorowhenua ClubMember.
WhatadifferenceachangeofvenuemadetotheManawatuClassic MotorcycleSwapMeet.Innormalyearstherewouldbe15-22siteholders; thisyear40-45.Mayitcontinuetogrowinsize?Ofinterest,ifyouwere lookingforMatchlesspartsforacurrentrestoration,thiswasagoodSwap Meettobeat.
Onafinalnote,theSparesDepartmentisgoingtohaveaMid-Winter SaleonSaturdaythe17thofJunefrom9amto3pm.Thisisbecauseafter twoyearswithoutaSwapMeetwearestillover-fullwithparts,andwe needtobalancethein-comingsandout-goings.
