Brakesandwaterpumparetheonlythingswhichhave neededattentioninits120,000miles.Ithasbeen warrantedandregisteredallofitslife. At40yearsthecarbecameeligibletojointhecarclub, sothatiswhenIbecamealocalmember.

Ouraccountantatthetime(August1972)advisedusto buyanewcareach,thusbeingabletowritethemoffso mucheachtaxyear.
Ithasalwaysbeenafamilycar,drivenbymyselfand mywife.
ThedemiseoftheKowhai ThelargestofthethreeKowhaitreesinfrontoftheclubroomswasblowndown inoneofthestormsthatwehaveenjoyedinLevinthiswinter.Asitwasbeyond repair,evenbyallourexperts,itwasdecidedtoremoveitattheAugustworking bee.So,bentondestruction,severalclubmembersbroughtalongtheirmost maliciousgardeningtoolsand“hoed”intoit.Thesmallerbranchesweresoon dispatched,leavingthetrunkandrootstobesorted. OnSunday21AugustmeetattheNewWorldsupermarket carparkat8:30tostartsettingup.Thefirstjobwillbeplacing theorangeconestomarkthebordersoftheareathatwecanuse. Inadditiontotheconesownedbytheclub,arrangementshave beenmadetoborrowmorefromPaulIrelandDiggerHiremanythankstothem.
Wewillalsoneed,throughoutthemorning,clubmembers(in shiftsofmaybefouratatime)tocollectdonationsfromthe publictogototheCancerSociety.Collectionbucketsand identificationjacketswillbeprovidedbytheCancerSociety. Theeventisscheduledtostartat9:00,andifyouarebringing acartodisplay,pleasebringyourclubwindscreenbanner.

ThesunshonebrightlyinOtakitogreetagoodturnoutofKapitimidweektravellersarrivingfromWellingtonandHorowhenua.Onecan imaginethedrivefromWellington,whetheritbearoundthecoast roadinthemorningsunlightordrivingoverthenewTransmission GullyStateHighway1.Theexpansiveviewsoverthecountrysideand acrossthewaterwouldalsohavebeenbreathtaking.Thescenery comingdownfromHorowhenuawouldn’tbetoobadeither. ItwassogoodtohavenewmidweektravellersfromWellingtonand HorowhenuacomingtogethertovisittheOtakiMuseumandtothe luncheonattheSaltandPepperCafé,southofLevin.Onlyonecouple ofournumbercruisedonpassedtheCafé,whichleadtoaspeedy chasetocatchthemupandpointthemintherightdirection.For thosewholookoutforthe“Salt&Pepper”signforgetaboutthe muchlarger“BenniksEggs”signalongsideit. ThevisittotheOtakiMuseumpictorialexhibitiondidnotdisappoint ourgroupofviewersastherewasalsoamixofexhibits.JudithMiller andSueCarolwereourhosts.JudithSpokeatlengthaboutthe historicalnatureoftheHeritageBankBuilding,thebeginningsofthe OtakiMuseumandwentontospeakoftheworkinvolvedinmounting anexhibitionandtheareasandscopeofactivitywithintheMuseum setting.Thesignificancealsoofthenumberofvolunteerswho contributeinhavingamuseumopenfortheOtakiCommunityand alsovisitorstotheregion. EversinceIboughtthe1937ModelYFord,Ihavebeencurioustofindthe reasonwhythebottomoftherearbodyhasbeen“bogged”.Withthe backseatoutandviewedinternally,thebodyappearstobesoundwith nosignofrustpenetrationorbodydamage.Icouldseeexternallythatthe boghadcrackedinplaces,allowingrainwatertopenetrate.Ichippedout someofthefillerandcouldseesmallpatchesofsurfacerustforming beneath,which,ifleftalone,wouldrotoutthebottomofthebodyin time.Thebogappearstobeverythin,about23mm.
Theundersideoftherear bodyworkhassomesurfacerust whichneedsfixing.Themudguard pipingisidealtoallowrainwaterto penetratebetweenthepipingand mudguardandhelppromotethe formationofrust.Thebodywork, wherethemudguardattaches,is alsoshowingsurfacerustforming.
Todealwiththeproblem,thewholeofthebackofthecarneededtobe strippeddown,includingtherearmudguardsandthevalenceholdingthe sparewheel.

PriortothepublicationoftheAugust/SeptembereditionofBeaded Wheels,thesecretarysentusacopyofthelistofproposedbranchevents. Justaswellthattheydid,becauseweweresurprisedtonoticeacoupleof errorsinthattwoeventswerelistedforHorowhenuaBranchthatweknew nothingabout.
Thesecondeventlistedwasaclubrunon18thSeptember.At committeemeetingwedecidedthatwecouldorganisesomethingonthis date,soaswewerealreadysurprised,wenamedtheevent“SurpriseRun”. LUCASGENERATORPROBLEMSANDREPAIRS.
Thearmaturewiringwillneedtoberesolderedtothecommutator.Make surethecommutatorandarmaturewindingarethoroughlycleanedprior toresoldering.
Thesolderedconnectionwillpartbetweenthecommutatorandthe armaturewindingifnotsubstantiallysoldered. Totestforthisproblem,thegeneratorrearendplatecompletewiththe generatorbrushesfittedcorrectly,shouldbeattachedtothecommutator endofthearmature.
Lucasgeneratorarmaturesusuallyfailduetooneoftwofaults: Thefirstisashortinthearmaturewindingtoearth,whichshouldbe checkedusinganohmmeterbetweenthecommutatorsegmentsand earthonthearmatureshaft.Noresistancereadingshouldbeobserved. Ifaresistanceisobserved,duetoinsulationbreakdownbetweenthe armaturewindings,thenthearmatureshouldbesenttoanarmature rewinderordumped.(ThereisanarmaturerewinderinPetone.) Thesecond,morecommon,failureoccurswithfaultysolderingofthe armaturewindingontothecommutator.Thecentrifugalforceappliedto thesolderedconnectionisconsiderable,particularlyattheratedpeak speedof6,000r.p.m.(themaximumforaLucasgenerator.)
Anohmmetersetonthelowestresistancerangeisconnectedbetween thearmatureterminaloftheendplateandearthontheendplateitself. Thearmatureisthenturnedaroundonecommutatorsegmentatatime andtheresistancereadingnotedoneachstep.Afaultisindicatedbya highresistanceoropencircuitreading.
NewarmaturesarenowunavailableforanyLucasgeneratorasthey arwellandtrulyobsolete,butthisrepairwilldomuchinsalvagingan armaturewhichwouldotherwisebedumped. IhavenotfoundanyU.S.generatorssufferingfromarmaturewindings cominglooseonthecommutator,possiblybecauseoftheirmorerugged construction,buthavefoundsomewithshortstoearthonarmatures, duringmyservicingcareer.Theseservicinginstructionsareequally applicabletoU.S.generators.
