The legendary Ryder’s movie evening on the 4th of September, orchestrated by Team Goldingham, will involve the usual start at the Albany site looking at a 15.30hrs start with the expected small tour to the site. The cost is $35 for film and dinner, or $39 for ice cream included. Support our loyal hospitality. Stan’s TBA Run in October involves the well-executed tour of some discovered and unknown roads starts at the Albany site and will lead to a place of wellprepared sustenance.

The longed for Hillclimb at Manunui on the 17th of November with a joint event with the Historic Racing Club is the time of testing man and machine. Please work furiously on the car to enter. Remember that the spirit that sparked Chelsea was to encourage the use of basic and standard cars of members. I note a lot of non-attending members are not seen at events and club nights, time to come clean and try this as exercise for the car.

Two activities for December, 8th is the club night with our BBQ/ Christmas function and the 31st for the Grass Gymkhana and spit roast at the Hacienda of Mike Hope-Cross in Taupaki. ‘’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’

THE 2022 R’OIL CAN

Kevin Beesley Reports on the Rally…. It was a great event. The 2022 R’Oilcan Rally. Great roads. A route that took us from our start at Ararimu down through central Waikato to morning tea at Waiterimu, across to Morrinsville, on to lunch at Kiwitahi, then by devious means south towards Matamata, west towards Cambridge, then back eastwards again to finish at Okoroire. Uncluttered rural byways, sufficient metal, off road through the Maramarua forest, proving, again, you don’t need venture far from Auckland to find the roads less travelled. Great organisation. Clear instructions. No one AWOL en route. Kevin, Elizabeth, Hamish and the wider Andrew family had every base covered and did us proud. Surely, tackling a tree with a chain saw to clear our path, as Kevin did whilst we enjoyed morning tea, went above and beyond! Great weather. Apart from a solid shower on the motorway heading for the start and a shower or two in the mid-afternoon, the day held fair, if cloudy, and not cold. Great entry. Such a line-up of quality vintage machinery is rarely seen on N.Z. roads these days. With: - A shining of Sunbeams. That splendid ship of the highway, Oliver and Nicola Midgley’s 1925 20/60, which has responded well to Oliver’s sympathetic improvements. Edward and Mrs Simpson’s trusty 1927 20.9, not long returned P a g e |6

from campaigning on the Irishman. David Adams, vigorous as always in his 1932 20, Ryan Winterbottom conducting. - A twosome of Talbots. The 1931 AM90 with Kevin and Mariette Beesley aboard and the 1930 AO70 Special conveying Tracy and Stephen Winterbottom. - A rabble of Rileys. Harold Booth’s immaculate 1930 9HP Tourer that performs so indecently well and the sleek 1936 15/6 Special of last year’s winners, Steve and Megan Cranch. Plus, our revered President Rob Chapman in his 1931 9hp Special, complete with hood. - A dash of Delage. Max and granddaughter Saskia Jamieson 1925 DI mounted. A proven team in a well proven vehicle. - A hint of Hotchkiss. Smooth and powerful, Vaughan Beesley’s 1930 AM80, with Dean Salter and Mike Greig in attendance. - A modicum of Model A’s. Tony Prebensen and Tom Davey all the way from Hawke’s Bay in Tony’s ’28 Tourer. The 1930 Roadster of Jim and Kaaren Smylie from Tauranga. And Les and Helen Duggan, also from Tauranga, in 1930 Roadster. - A dab of Daimler Dart. Keith and Di Humphrey’s in SP250. Always impeccably turned out. - An adequacy of Alvis. Pat Bren and Mike Stuart, from Napier in Pat’s 1926 12/50, running sweetly. A trustworthy performer. - A mix of MX. The delightfully original 1989 MX5 of Peter and Julie Benbrook. - A blush of Bugatti. Terry Roycroft and Patrick McMahon in the Roycroft 1925/48 Bugatti/Jaguar Type 35A. - A minimum of MG. Just one. Stan Smith and Scott Hunter in 1998 MGF - And not only but also Norm and Pat Dewhurst in classic Triumph Dolomite. The Skoda Felicia they had entered spent the weekend at home. Mentioned in despatches - Ryan McDonald and Graeme Brayshaw whose participation was curtailed by Covid. A great good time was had by all. Even Terry Roycroft, despite the fact he won. Great big Thanks to the Andrew Team, outstanding!

The Chairman’s Report. A big congratulations to Terry Roycroft for winning the 2022 edition of the R'oil Can. Well done to the Andrews family for a thoroughly enjoyable event. A couple of branch members had said they would have entered but for the fact the vintage was off the road and or sold. The committee has discussed this and though it is a vintage open top event and always will be there are occasions where circumstances have changed for members Taken on as a case-to- it is most likely that the odd entry will be looked at favourably, that is entered by a branch member as a courtesy. Dee has organised this month’s Daffodil run in conjunction with Wellsford, Warkworth and North Shore Branches. An event well worth supporting and selection of upmarket shops and restaurants. Rob Short statement from the Editor: Driving a Sportscar with hand controls come from kind permission from The Bulletin of the Vintage Sportscar Club. Many thanks to the photographers on the R’oil Can, Alastair Jones, Brian Pratt, Ian and Jacqui Goldingham, Keith Humphreys, Liz Andrew, Nicole Midgley, Pat Bren, Shelly Simpson, Steven Cranch and Tracey Winterbottom. To all of you, many, many thanks. Image on last page from Keith H. P a g e | 11

Team Midgley always well presented in the Sunbeam 20/60. The editor crewed in this car in the early 70’s to Irishman’s. They were the Viceroys choice in pre-war Burma for up country touring to the Shan States. The Chairmans Riley 9 Special with happy passenger.
