Carroll Shelby's first race car—1949 MG TC—by Kurt Ernst Before Texan Carroll Shelby built the Shelby Cobra or helped Ford to defeat Ferrari at Le Mans (and Sebring and Daytona, for those keeping score), he was a racer who competed at the highest levels of motorsport. A heart condition ended his driving career in 1960, after just nine amazing seasons behind the wheel. the car that began the legend of Carroll Shelby was a borrowed 1949 MG TC. In May of 1952, Shelby joined a friend from Dallas, Ed Wilkins, at the Grand Prairie Naval Air Station drag meetsports car race in Norman, Oklahoma. Though Shelby had no formal road racing experience, Wilkins let him drive his 1949 MG TC in a race for small-displacement sports cars. I had no idea of what to do but just drive fast and I won it.

Beating similar cars piloted by experienced drivers is one thing, but Shelby's victory also qualified him for a second race, where he'd be pitted against faster and more powerful cars from manufacturers like Jaguar. Despite the handicap of inexperience, Shelby took victory in the afternoon event as well, and the seeds of a driving career were planted. Because it was early his my career, he still had a lot to learn but knew how to go fast. This 1949 MG TC changed my life, because from that point forward, I knew that I wanted to be involved with racing and sport cars. In 1953, Shelby raced Brown's Cad-Allard, followed by Roy Cherryhomes' Cad-Allard, winning 8 or 9 races. Then in 1954, he drove in the Mil Kilometros de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, sponsored by the Automobile Club of Argentina and the Sports Car Club of America. This is where he met John Wyer, Aston Martin's team manager, who asked Shelby to drive their DBR3 at Sebring. The DBR3 did not finish Sebring in 1954 due to a broken rear axle. Shelby travelled to Europe in April 1954, where he raced a DBR3 for John Wyer at Aintree, followed by Le Mans. Teaming up with Graham Whitehead, their Aston Martin took fifth at the thousand kilometres at Monza on 27 June.

Carroll Shelby's first race car—1949 MG TC—by Kurt Ernst

He then drove in the 3-car factory team effort at Silverstone on 17 July with Peter Collins and Roy Salvadori, all three cars taking the three top places. Shelby racing an Aston Martin DBR1/300 at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1958. In August 1954, Shelby drove with Donald Healey, and his team in a Austin-Healey 100S and supercharged 100S, they set Class D National speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Shelby, Healey, Captain G.E.T. Eyston, Mortimer Morris Goodall, and Roy Jackson-Moore set about 70 new records, with Shelby setting 17 on his own. Shelby was severely injured in a crash while racing an Austin-Healey in the Carrera Panamericana. Though he underwent eight months of operations, he continued to drive in 1955, winning about ten races, and a second-place showing at Sebring driving Allen Guiberson's Ferrari Monza. He then started driving Tony Paravano's Ferraris in August 1955. He won a further 30 races with the Ferrari in 1956, started driving for John Edgar, and opened Carroll Shelby Sports Cars in Dallas.

He drove in the Mount Washington Hillclimb Auto Race in a specially prepared Ferrari 375 GP roadster, to a record run of 10 minutes, 21.8 seconds on his way to victory in 1956. He also set records at Giants Despair Hillclimb, and raced at Brynfan Tyddyn. He was sports Illustrated magazine's driver of the year in 1956 and 1957. Racing John Edgar's 4.5-litre Maserati at the Riverside International Raceway in September 1957, he was involved in a crash that caused injuries requiring 72 stitches and plastic surgery for broken bones in his nose and cheekbones. However, he returned in November, winning with the same car at the same course, against Masten Gregory and Dan Gurney. Shelby joined John Wyer and the Aston Martin team in Europe and drove a DBR3 at the Belgian Sports Car Grand Prix on 18 May 1958, followed by a DBR1 at the Nür2 burgring 1000 km with co-driver Salvadori.

Carroll Shelby's first race car—1949 MG TC—by Kurt Ernst Shelby was teamed up with Salvadori at Le Mans, but Shelby came down with dysentery and had to be replaced by Stuart Lewis-Evans after a few hours into the race. Shelby then drove a Maserati 250F for Mimo Dei's Scuderia Centro Sud in 3 Grand Prix races to gain Formula 1 and open-wheel car experience, including the Portuguese Grand Prix. Shelby finished the year driving John Edgar's 4.5L Maserati in the Tourist Trophy at Nassau. Shelby and Salvadori started the 1959 sports car season by driving the DBR1/300 at Sebring in March. In June, Shelby drove Wolfgang Seidel's Porsche in the Nürburgring 1000km. The highlight of his racing career came in June 1959 when he co-drove an Aston Martin DBR1 with Englishman Roy Salvadori) to victory in the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans. In September, Shelby drove with Jack Fairman in the Goodwood Tourist Trophy. The 1959 Grand Prix season saw Shelby driving the Aston Martin DBR4 in the Dutch Grand Prix in May, followed by the British Grand Prix at Aintree in July. Shelby then drove in the Portuguese Grand Prix in August, followed by the Italian Grand Prix in September. Shelby finished the 1959 racing season driving Casner Motor Racing Division's Birdcage Maserati at the Nassau races in December. In January 1960, he drove Temple Buell's Maserati 250F in the New Zealand Grand Prix, then Camoradi's Porsche in the Cuban Gran Premio Libertad, then their 2.9-liter Birdcage Maserati at Sebring. He won the Grand Prix at Riverside driving one of "Lucky" Cassner's Birdcage Maseratis, and then won the Castle Rock race in June, driving a Scarab. He finished the year driving Max Balchowsky's "Old Yeller II" in the Road America, then a Birdcage Maserati in the Pacific Grand Prix and the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix, which was his last race. According to Shelby, winning the Twenty-four Hours was probably the greatest thrill I ever got out of racing. I can think of plenty of other races that carry their quota of thrills for the winner, but when you win this one it kind of gives you a license to go out and tell people you're good, and that often helps get some other deals together. In 1961, Shelby, along with Pete Brock, opened the Shelby School of High Performance Driving at the Riverside track.

The King of all Kings, was the Cobra of all Cobras. The only surviving 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra Super Snake, custom-made for legendary race car driver Carroll Shelby. It was the most powerful sports car that he and his benefactor, Henry "The Deuce" Ford II, ever built together to battle Ferrari in the 1960s. This was considered his bad boy, an ultimate driving machine that ate that Ferrari alive. The vehicle uses a 427-cubic inch Ford big block engine, it's pure power. He installed an automatic transmission and added twin Paxton superchargers to the V-8 engine and mated it to a 3-speed automatic transmission that could handle the massive 800 horsepower, 0 to 60 mph in three seconds and had a top speed of 200 mph. The car was wick3 edly fast and became a cultural icon.

Club Captains Report—Laurie's Lot—February—2024 Our CHB Branch Christmas party at Oruawharo was well attended and enjoyed by all. A very special night for five of our members receiving their Long Service Awards. Over New Year seven branch members went to the Gumboot Rally in Taihape. A great two days travelling on roads John Foot would have been proud of. Coming up we have our Car Gymkhana at Elsthorpe Domain on Sunday 11th February, once again being organised by Seton and Iain. On Saturday March 16th, I have organised a trip to the Tikokino Sheepdog Trials at 1704 Makaroro Road. The Secretary said the best viewing time is between 10 00am and lunch time. So those coming make your own way to the mentioned address. Bring your chairs, umbrellas and lunch. Then after maybe 3 hours or so make our way to the Tiko Pub for a lemonade etc. For our March dinner and meeting on Wednesday 20th March, Gloria is asking that you bring along a baby photo, these will be mounted on a board and at the April dinner and meeting the challenge will be to identify who the photo’s belong to. GUMBOOT RALLY—31st DECEMBER 2023—1st JANUARY 2024—by Gloria Malcolmson Seven Members of our CHB Club met around 10.00am at the Windmill Cafe in Woodville for morning tea on 31st December 2023. After morning tea. We headed over the Saddle Road towards Kimbolton to Glyn and Cathy Clements place for lunch. Unfortunately it had started to rain before we left for Kimbolton which was a pain. After lunch we headed out onto the back country roads which Glyn Clements had organised to Taihape. With our instruction sheet in hand, which was great, however the rain made for some interesting driving. The organiser hadn't first driven a pre run check and relied on a map and said it is fine. We all ended up going down a road that had a farm gate at the end. It made for some laughing and ribbing of the organiser. A good start for our new North Island Club Captain!! Once in Taihape we went to our motels and settled in, then we met up with the others in theirs for a few drinks and friendship. Talking to the members from Manawatu made it great for Laurie and I as we got to know them better. Laurie and I were known as the Gumboot Rally virgins. Dinner was at a Chinese restaurant where we were joined by members from the Whanganui Branch. On the morning of the 1st of January we all gathered for the start of the rally which was to start at 10.15am. This stage started in Taihape then down to Mangaweka through some amazing back country roads. The views were amazing and breathtaking, deep valleys and beautiful country views. We stopped for lunch at the River Valley Lodge which is by the Rangitikei River. With the sound of the river and the waterfall, made for a relaxing lunch. We continued on our way back to Taihape for a BBQ dinner and prize giving. On our travels we had to collect six playing cards and hand them in at the end. Laurie and I missed our last card and had to go back to get it. These were added up and worked out for our scores. There were only 5 cars that got all six. We were number 5 from 5 but still got an amazing prize. The BBQ and prize giving was held at Robert Baines workshop. Amazing people, amazing roads and scenery, all made for a couple of wonderful days. We will be going back again next year.

027-437-1511 Some Oil Industry History On January 10, 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produced a "gusher" of crude oil, coating the surrounding area and signaling the start of the American oil industry. After this discovery, petroleum, which had only been used in the U.S. as a lubricant or in kerosene for lamps, would become the primary fuel source for new inventions like cars and airplanes. Eventually, coal-powered forms of transportation, such as ships and trains, would also begin using the liquid fuel. Over the course of 1901, more than 285 active wells became operational at Spindletop and an estimated 500 oil and land companies were established, including some familiar giants still in business today: Humble (later Exxon), the Texas Company (Texaco) and Magnolia Petroleum Company (Mobil). 20

WEBER SPECIALTIES LTD Company Profile NZ’s finest & most experienced Carburettor Sales and team. Weber, Dellorto, SU, Solex, Stromberg & most other makes, serviced, restored and repaired. •

New carburettors supplied and fitted.

Worn carburettors serviced to new condition.

Restoration of carburettors to the highest concours standards.

Damaged carburettors repaired.

Obsolete & hard to find components manufactured.

Restoration Our workshop is set up with repair processes for each type of worn or damaged component. The carburettor is stripped right down to the body, each piece is examined for wear, corrosion and, in the case of calibrated parts, tested for compliance with the original specifications and replaced where necessary with new parts. All the components are put through our

cleaning procedure, separated into related groups for processing, restored to original finish and reassembled to bring the carburettor back to as near to original condition as is feasible. There are many variables so there is no set price for a restoration. All jobs are individually priced before we start the process so we do need to see the carburettor before giving you an estimate. Usually there is no charge for assessing your carburettor except for any freight involved.

Weber Specialty 1/12 Anvil Road Silverdale Auckland 0932 Email: Weberspx@gmail.com Website: www.weberspecialties.co.nz I can very much recommend this company, Weber Specialty. After years of carburettor instability with my 1974 Triumph Spitfire twin carburettors, my son in-law took it into Weber specialty where the twin carburettors were over hauled and refitted. The difference is amazing, she starts easily now and is running very sweetly. Joyce Calder, Bleat Editor. 25
