Robert E. Bourke was born in Chicago on June 15, 1916. From an early age, Bourke had a passion for airplane designs and would occasionally build airplane models as a hobby. Later, that pastime led to his passion for drawing, where he would come up with creative ideas for sketching in lead pencil. His teachers at the time noted his talent.

Bourke became very good friends with E.M. Laird, who would later teach him about the importance of airplane design and how airplanes were constructed and engineered. He enrolled at the Chicago Art Institute, where he took oil painting and design courses to further his education. Bourke would later develop a skill for mechanical objects and how they would function together.

Remembering Robert Bourke—Great Designer for Studebaker—By Robert Tate A 1953 Studebaker

Also, Bourke’s father owned and operated an architectural firm, and Robert would work there during the summer. He also worked for Sears and Roebuck in the merchandise development division.

During the 1930s, the Great Depression brought many changes to American lives, including Bourke, who dealt with layoffs and cutbacks. After years of working in the industrial design industry, he started working with Perry Sullivan, who would introduce him to designer Virgil Exner. After reviewing Bourke’s drawings, Exner asked, “How would you like to work here?” Bourke responded, “I would be very much interested.”

Bourke was offered $75 a week in 1940 to work for Studebaker design, a great deal of money for that time. Studebaker’s design studio was led by Raymond Loewy. Around this time, Bourke was introduced to a talented modelling sculptor named Frank Alhroth, who was an automotive modeler. During the 1940s, Loewy had a talented team working on Studebaker, including Bourke, Gordon Buehrig (who was responsible for the great-looking Cord models), Virgil Exner, Vince Gardner and others.

After World War II ended, Studebaker began to create and sell many great-looking models. Some models that changed the course of automotive styling were the new 1947 Studebakers from the Loewy design studio. Automotive historians have said it was Bourke, along with Virgil Exner, who were responsible for the styling for the 1947 Studebakers. They were a radical departure from anything previously seen on American roads, introducing the first of the post-war slab-sided bodies. KaiserFrazer also created great-looking post-war designs as well. Historians have noted that the new Studebaker designs in 1947 received a mixed reception from the public.

For 1950, there were also a lot of media and consumer concerns about the new Studebaker’s frontend styling. As noted in the book, A Century of Automotive Style.

“At Loewy’s suggestion, Bob Bourke patterned Studebaker’s 1950 frontend facelift after the P-38 fighter plane.”

Remembering Robert Bourke—Great Designer for Studebaker—By Robert Tate

It was a simple front-end pencil sketch by Bourke that helped create and design the 1950 Studebaker front end design and put it into production.

In contrast, the 1953 Studebaker models were introduced to great enthusiasm by the public. The styling on these cars is among my favourites of 1950s design.

Bourke’s sketch was one of the original concepts for the car that became the great-looking 1953 hardtop model.

The 1953 Studebakers were on display at the beautiful Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, and the January 31,1953 edition of Business Week magazine featured a cover story on the new Studebaker model.

Sunday 23rd July 2023—CHB Branch Run to Norsewood

Participants to make their on way, to Pip and Jenny Halford's place arriving there around 11.00am. To get there either travel down SH2 turning left into Kopua Road or travel down Takapau/ Ormondville Road to turn right into Kopua Road. Pip and Jenny's is number 376, Kopua Road. Turn into this driveway. From there you will go to Hermanson's Contracting, to view various machinery.

This includes the off road "truck" they race. This is also our lunch stop so BYO lunch, chairs and drinks.

From there we will travel through to Norsewood to view Graham and Heather Cheers vehicles and sheds at 106, Pedersen Road. Heather is providing tea and scones. Thank you Heather. After this it is homeward bound. We hope you enjoy the day and safe travels home.

Norsewood was founded by mainly Norwegian settlers in 1872 as a loggers’ settlement and retains a Scandinavian tenor. The village was carved out of the forest, and was subsequently destroyed in a fire in 1888.

The government of New Zealand requested Norwegian immigrants and made an agreement with Winge & Co. in Christiania, which would allow for 3,000 emigrants to New Zealand. In the years 1870 –76, nearly 1,000 Norwegians moved to the Norsewood area.

Neil and Pat Malcolm—Presented with their—25 year membership badges

At the CHB VCC AGM on 21st June, Neil and Pat Malcolm were each awarded the club’s 25 year badge, which was presented to them by the National President, Diane Quarrie.

Neil and Pat received the club’s “25 year badge” having been members for that period of time, starting out in the Hawke’s Bay Branch of the VCC before the CHB Branch began operations.

They have enjoyed owning their 1929 Ford Model A Tudor over those years and have travelled widely throughout New Zealand making many friends and contacts along the way.

They continue to contribute to the running of the CHB branch being involved with the committee, and have organised several runs for the branch in the past.

John and Shirley Foot—Moving to Feilding — by Rod McKenzie

John and Shirley Foot moved to Central Hawke’s Bay from the Waikato about 12 years ago bringing their 1937 Buick Sedan with them. They are both very competitive rallyists and have picked up numerous placings at events throughout the country. John had a stint at the North Island Club Captain’s position for the National organisation, and arranged a major trip from north in the Waikato to Hawke’s Bay some years ago, culminating in the entrants on that event entering the North Island Easter Rally held in Hastings that year. The Buick was sold a few years ago to be eventually replaced by a 1990 Ford Falcon Sedan which is also used as their everyday car. John and Shirley were awarded the club’s “35 year Badge” for their long service to the running of the club a few years ago too.

Both the Clelands and the Foots are moving shortly to be closer to family in the Manawatu, and will be missed by their many friends in Central Hawke’s Bay.

Both the Clelands and the Foots are moving shortly to be closer to family in the Manawatu, and will be missed by their many friends in Central Hawke’s Bay.

John and Margaret Cleland also received the club’s “25 year Badge” a few years ago having joined the VCC with a 1924 Ford Model T in the mid 1990’s. They have owned about five Model T’s during their membership of the club and now motor in a 1928 Ford Model A Tudor.

John and Margaret got a lot of pleasure out of restoring a 1913 Ford T Tourer and used it a lot once it was road-worthy. John didn’t know how to drive a Model T to begin with and it was rather a lot of fun teaching him, as it is with any newcomer to the delights of the vehicle. They have travelled widely with their Ford T’s both in the North Island and down South Island too, both with the VCC and the Model T Ford Club. Both the Clelands and the Foots are moving shortly to be closer to family in the Manawatu, and will be missed by their many friends in Central Hawke’s Bay.

Diane Quarrie extends an invitation to those members who have been associated with Geoff Quarrie during his 50 years of involvement with the VCC Club for a presentation celebrating Geoff Quarries' 50 year membership of the Vintage Car Club

Chairman's Report—July—2023

Got though June ok! Still a lot of covid hanging around. Keith and Jean Hopping have succumbed with Jean ending up in ICU in Hastings she is improving by the day.

Keith has taken on the job of Vehicle Identification and Valuations from John Foot.

The trip to Napier to the Faraday Centre had to be called off due to health concerns, we will revisit.

Rod and I attended meetings in Napier for support for the HBVCC and CHBVCC hosting the 2026 Vero Rally, at this stage we are in the process of putting in a bid to host this event, two other clubs around NZ will be putting in a bid as well.

We are losing 4 very valuable members from our club, John and Shirley Foot who are moving to Fielding, and John and Margaret Cleland are also moving South to Palmerston North. Over 25 years plus, both couples have been heavily involved with the development of our CHB Branch, after transferring from other branches around NZ, both couples have also contributed to Management at National Level. Your knowledge and participation will be missed. Our very best wishes to you all.

The CHB Daffodil Rally for Cancer on the 20th August 2023 being held at Oruawharo Homestead grounds. The organization of this event is well underway. SAVE THIS DATE

Our AGM was held at the Waipukurau Bowling Club with about 50 in attendance. The committee has remained the same with no one wanting to take up the challenge, congratulations to the committee. I’m looking forward to working with you all for another year.

At the AGM Neil and Pat Malcolm were presented with their 25year Membership Badges, presented by VCC National President Diane Quarrie. Neil and Pat have always been very enthusiastic members, congratulations to you both.

The Torque Heads gatherings are continuing to be well supported.

Club Captains Report—Laurie's Lot—July—2023

After 8 years, Rod McKenzie gave up the Club Captains position, so someone new had big shoes to fill. That person turned out to be me and my shoes aren't all that big. After struggling for a while things have become easier.

Our first run for the branch year was a quiz type run to Dannevirke and lunch in Merv's shed.

August was the Annual Daffodil run, again organised by Kay and her girls. A great turnout of about 70 cars. The run took us to an afternoon tea and wine tasting venue, very enjoyable and well planned. The event raised $4,000 for the Cancer Society.

In September Henk and Ella organised an interesting historical and geographical run in the Norsewood area.

October saw Rod's run round East Cape, with many stories being told about that very adventurous trip. Breakdowns and potholes top of the list ,the potholes proving rather difficult for low slung Spitfires to negotiate.

Oruawharo Homestead hosted our Christmas Party.

Into the New Year and we had a beach run to Kairakau Beach.

February was the gymkhana at Elsthorpe Domain Also in February a very successful hoe down was held at the Waipukurau Race Course. The main feature was the appearance of some ragamuffins from nowhere in particular singing a couple of songs.

Our twilight run was over roads between Waipukurau and Dannevirke which had been affected by Cyclone Gabrielle which made travel interesting.

May's run was a soggy one to Tokomaru Steam Museum, an impressive display of some big machinery. After that we went to John Callesen's property to view his veteran collection and his restoration of a Newton Bennet. Very talented man.

During the year we had a quiz night and a bingo night, both of which seemed well received. A repeat is on the cards.

In November 11 veteran vehicles assembled in Dannevirke for a rally put on by Dannevirke members.

A big thank you to all those who organised events and supported our monthly meetings. Thank you to fellow committee members for the work they have done.

A very successful year and hopefully the branch will prosper in the coming year

Manawatu held their night trail on Saturday 17th June 2023. Four cars from our CHB branch joined them, John and Shirley Foot, Rod and Peter McKenzie, Bruce Poole and Neil Cox and Laurie and myself.

Driving over to Palmerston North in driving rain was interesting !! Arriving there about 7.30pm.

It was a timed run, so we all started after 8.00pm noting the time we started. Our 1 and 1/2 hour run took us along SH3, across the Manawatu River turning right towards Aokautere, and over the Pahiatua Track. From there it was onto Balance Valley Road, over the Balance Bridge and right towards Woodville, left into Woodlands Road and over the Saddle Road. Through Ashurst and out on the road towards Colyton, turning into Watershed Road and back to the clubrooms. Once there we noted our finish time to calculate our time for the run.

Soup and savouries for supper was put on by the branch.

The closest to the required time was John and Shirley Foot with Laurie and I second.

It was difficult driving in the heavy rain but what an interesting way to spend a grotty Saturday evening.

I would like to thank Glyn and Cathy Clements and helpers for a great night. It was nice to catch up with other club members.

MID WEEK RUN 10th 11th 12th OCTOBER 2023—withRodandScarlett

Once again, Rod and Scarlett McKenzie are arranging a mid-week tour/run for mid-October. If you are coming along, you will need to arrange to stay two nights at the “Raceway Court Motel” which is at 20 Awahuri Road, on the outskirts of Feilding, being the nights of Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th October.

As this motel is very popular with truckies to stay, you are strongly advised to make your booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. We have spoken to the manager [Paul} who is aware we are coming as a group.

There is a restaurant on site which we will quite probably utilise one night. Scarlett and Rod will be heading across to the Manawatu to do some reconnaissance work in the next couple of months to check out some places of interest.

At this early stage, entrants will likely meet up in Woodville for morning tea/coffee on the morning of 10th October before heading across the “Saddle Road” to Ashurst. On Thursday 12th, the final day, we will have a picnic lunch [BYO] at a pretty garden where you can wander about and admire the plants, the homestead and other interesting things before heading back to CHB. There will probably be some costs involved at places we stop at, so expect to pay some fees so bring cash for that.

It would assist in the planning if you would advise us that you will be coming along as some places need numbers of people arriving on their doorstep. Email:

Company Profile

NZ’s finest & most experienced Carburettor Sales and team. Weber, Dellorto, SU, Solex, Stromberg & most other makes, serviced, restored and repaired.

• New carburettors supplied and fitted.

• Worn carburettors serviced to new condition.

• Restoration of carburettors to the highest concours standards.

• Damaged carburettors repaired.

• Obsolete & hard to find components manufactured.

Restoration

Our workshop is set up with repair processes for each type of worn or damaged component. The carburettor is stripped right down to the body, each piece is examined for wear, corrosion and, in the case of calibrated parts, tested for compliance with the original specifications and replaced where necessary with new parts. All the components are put through our cleaning procedure, separated into related groups for processing, restored to original finish and reassembled to bring the carburettor back to as near to original condition as is feasible. There are many variables so there is no set price for a restoration.

All jobs are individually priced before we start the process so we do need to see the carburettor before giving you an estimate. Usually there is no charge for assessing your carburettor except for any freight involved.
