Celebrating 50 Years membership of the VCC of NZ

It all started for Geoff in 1971 when he viewed the 1965 International Haast Rally on TV. He was looking for a ‘hobby’ that was family friendly and so Geoff joined the Auckland Branch of the Vintage Car Club in May 1972 becoming a ‘provisional’ member as he didn’t have a VCC eligible vehicle. In those days the Branch charged 50cents to participate in a modern on their Sunday runs.

After searching around the Auckland area for a vehicle, on the 22nd of March 1972 Geoff brought an unrestored 1931 Chevrolet Sedan for $475 from an advertisement in the NZ Herald. Geoff and a mate towed the vehicle home to Howick from Pakuranga and when he pushed it into the garage he said to himself “Geoff what the hell have you done!”

Restoration of the 1931 Chev was completed on 10 August 1974. Geoff did all the panel beating himself at the Manukau Tech night school class run by the late Wilbur Brown. Geoff went on to the Auckland Branch committee in 1974. During the next year Geoff brought a 1927 unrestored Model A Tourer for $350, that car is now restored and is owned by Alan Jones, a HB Branch member. Geoff bought the remains of a 1915 GWK sports roadster on 15 March 1975 for $300. Again, this vehicle was advertised in the NZ Herald and Geoff was 2nd in line for purchasing it with Wilbur Brown having 1st option. A deal was made with Wilbur, and the rest is history.

Geoff moved to Hawke’s Bay in 1976 and started restoration of the GWK with the help of friend Jim McFadyen. It was completed just in time for the 1980 International Rally in Rotorua. The GWK was also entered in the 1992 Pan Pacific International Rally held in Palmerston North and the 2012 Vero International Rally in Whanganui. In 2005 Geoff and Diane also took part in the 6-day Veteran Thermal Triangle Tour organised by Rob Knight. This was a mean feat for such a little car and with the capacity of the boot being no bigger than a small suitcase. Geoff was Hawke’s Bay Branch Chairman from 1979 to 1981 when the Branch had its 21st Birthday.

In 1983 Geoff and Diane moved to Tamahere, Hamilton and transferred to the Waikato Branch. Geoff was Club Captain from 1985 to 1986. They won and plotted several Double 50s as well as the Auckland Hunua which they won two years in a row. In the middle of 1986 Geoff and Diane moved back to Hastings, transferring back to Hawke’s Bay Branch. Geoff took on the role of Club Captain for the branch and together with Diane, organised the Art Deco Rally for 10 years.

In 1997 Geoff purchased a 1924 Studebaker Roadster from Warren Hastings in Hastings. It was restored and on the road in 2003. Geoff and Diane travelled extensively in the Studebaker touring in both the North and South Island and participating in the 2022 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring. Geoff and Diane helped organise three Easter Rallies, one National Veteran Rally, and Geoff was on the organising committee for the Vero International Rally in Wanganui in 2012 as venue co-ordinator.

In 2013 Geoff and Diane rallied their 1930 Model A Bus to the National Commercial Rally driving it from Hastings to Gisborne and return conveying the then National President John Coomber and his wife Chris to the event. Later on, the bus was also driven to Fielding and return for the National Commercial Rally organised by Manawatu Branch. It now resides in Blenheim. Geoff has also owned a 1927 Dodge tourer, 1952 Bedford bus and the remains of 1901 US Long Distance. Geoff is currently working on a 1931 Chevrolet Pickup and next on the list is Diane’s first car, a 1957 A35.Geoff said one of the great things in belonging to the VCC is that he has made many long-lasting friendships throughout New Zealand.

Congratulations Geoff and thank you for your over 50 years of work and support to the Vintage Car Club.

Chairman's Report—August—2023

Here we are over half way through the year. The major event for the year for us is the National Daffodil Rally for Cancer which we will celebrate at Oruawharo Homestead. The planning is well underway, Will and Bianca are right with us for this Show and Shine event which should be quite spectacular. Various car clubs will have cars on display, just hope the weather will be on our side. There will be stalls, sausage sizzle run by the Local Rotary Club, Devonshire tea, Hot yummy soup and buns by Oruawharo, quick fire raffles and a very interesting Tradie Auction, such as Painter, builder, Gardening, bob cat (earth works) and more up for auction, a reserve will be set on the auction. A car airbag demonstration, this is a must see. Members, friends and family come along for a fun day.

This is a cash only event and please NO DOGS.

Congratulations to Geoff Quarrie on receiving an award for 50years of continues membership of the Vintage Car Club.

The AGM of the VCC of NZ will be held on the 12th August 2023. Dianne Quarrie will be standing down as National President after 8years in the chair, thank you for your contribution and dedication.

Not a lot of events this month, the weather has kept people inside brrrr

Sunday 23rd July we took a run to Norsewood and enjoyed the company of the Halfords, Hermansons and the Cheers, A great day out.

A swap meet is on at Manfield on the 5th August. One could find some bargins or maybe just a hotdog.

Our August meeting will be in Dannevirke with a quiz challenge starting at 5.30pm.

Club Captains Report—Laurie's Lot—August—2023

A very quiet month with our June run to Napier being cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

The status quo was almost restored at the AGM with the only two changes being Heather Cheer to now write the club report for the Beaded Wheels magazine, and Keith Hopping to now do the VIC certificates. Both of these positions were previously organised by John Foot, who gave a long and valuable service to these role for our club.

The July run was in the Norsewood area with the first stop at Pip and Jenny Halford's property, followed by a visit to Hermanson's Contracting. This was our lunch stop, and then it was on to Graeme and Heather Cheer's property, thank you all for opening up your properties.

August is the National Daffodil Day event run in conjunction with all other branches. The CHB Branch event is being held at Oruawharo in the form of a show and shine with lots of other activities planned.

Also on Thursday 24th August there is a trip being organised to go to the ten pin bowling in Hastings, open to all branch members male and female. Ken Lyons has put out information on this.

In September our branch dinner and meeting will be held in Dannevirke, the Manawatu Branch is joining us. This will be a Quiz Night between the two branches. Those coming are asked to be there about 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start with the Quiz.

Also in September on the 23rd is Bruce and Kens 1st vintage run, which is open to all, but only vintage participants have claim to the spoils.

October is Rod and Scarlets Manawatu Adventure, and at Labour Weekend, Norsewood School is having 150 year celebrations. This will be a chance to dress up in period costumes.

Till next month, safe motoring..

After a wet few days, the sun shone for our Club run to Norsewood. About 15 cars travelled to Pip and Jenny Halfords and met at their workshop where many hours are spent on car restorations by Pip and his sons. Pip recently purchased a 1974 Valiant Charger from a Panel beater in Tauranga, and it is now completely stripped down for a full restoration, quite daunting but a hobby the Halfords enjoy.

Brett purchased a 1974 XB Falcon Coupe a few years ago, and other than the upholstery & painting, they have completely restored it certainly a credit to them all. Craig owns a 1990 Ford Sierra that he is restoring and is also going to paint the car. Their neighbour, Casey Drake, displayed his 1955 Sunbeam Talbot and it has also occupied the hoist for maintenance work.

While the men were checking out the cars the ladies admired Ella Domper’s lovely display of art work, cross stitch items and her patchwork quilts, you are very talented Ella, thank you.

We continued on to visit Kevin Hermansen of “Hermansen’s Contracting”. Kevin has built up large fleet of John Deere tractors and has a very successful Contracting Business. He explained the difficulties he is having with huge increases in the cost of the machinery he uses with these increases needing to be passed on, but also needing to keep his clients happy, it’s a very fine line. The wet weather has made for a very difficult contracting season.

Kevin’s hobby that he LOVES, is off road mud racing in his truck “the Gambler”. It is a Cowper truck running a LS3 super charged engine (a photo shows his appearance after his last race). The huge motor sits between him and his navigator. The racing season runs from October through to April with about 9 events. They are held at different venues around the North Island and are well worth watching on TV (nerve wracking).

It was a very informative visit and Kevin is keen for the Club to return next season and see the large machines in operation.

CLUB RUN TO NORSEWOOD—23rd July 2023—
written by Pat Malcolm

From there we went to Heather & Graham Cheers where the men checked out Graham’s shed and the ladies enjoyed Heather’s garden. Graham had a very interesting work of art, the “Wim Wam” which was made by a retired engineer in Dannevirke, Arthur Tacon. After his death it was bequeathed to the Dannevirke Gallery of History, but due to storage difficulties they let the Dannevirke Fantasy Cave display it.

Graham spent many hours getting the hundreds of moving parts working and it certainly kept our members entertained. It was quite amazing and a credit to Graham. Graham & Heather are storing it until the new Fantasy Cave is built. Heather provided a very yummy afternoon tea for everyone and talked to the ladies on how her gardens developed.

The ladies enjoyed a garden walk and Heather is happy to have us back in the spring for another garden walk and to take any cuttings we want. It was great to visit these three places of interest in Norsewood and thanks to Laurie, Gloria, Mervyn and Sandra for organising a very enjoyable day.

RomanRoadConstruction

Without a single degree, they built us roads that have lasted an eternity

There was no ‘one-size-fits-all’ ancient Roman technique for building roads. Their construction method varied depending on the geographical location, terrain morphology, geological structure and available material. For example, different technical solutions were required to build roads in marshy areas or in areas where the road passed through a bedrock. Nevertheless, there were certain standard rules that were followed.

The average width of an ancient Roman road was between 5.5 to 6.0m, and they consisted of several characteristic load-bearing layers, regardless of the base on which they were built. Ancient Roman roads consisted of several layers:

Foundation soil – the base on which a road was build was compressed to be compact and to avoid structure settlement and then covered with sand or mortar.

Statumen – a layer that was laid on compacted foundation soil, consisting of crushed rock of minimum granularity of 5 cm. The thickness of this layer ranged from 25 to 60 cm.

Rudus – a 20 cm thick layer consisting of crushed rock 5 cm in diameter in cement mortar.

Nucleus – a concrete base layer made of cement, sand and gravel; 30 cm thick.

Summum dorsum – the final layer consisting of large 15cm thick rock blocks

Then the engineers arrived!

Diversions prove no match for Tutaekuri River By Michael Fowler

If you stood on the area of what is now Napier’s Marine Parade in the later part of the 19th century, chances are you would get a strong, odorous smell. When the wind was coming from the direction of the Whare-oMaraenui swamp containing most of Napier’s sewage disposal, this was especially true. This was not ideal for an aspiring tourist town promoting the health qualities of a relaxing seaside walk taking in the fresh, sea air. A solution to this problem was found in 1886 when the Tutaekuri River was proposed to be dammed and diverted from an area southwest of Meeanee called Beatson’s fellmongery. The Tūtaekurī’s new path would go into the south side of the Whare-o-Maraenui swamp (instead of directly into the Ahuriri inner harbour lagoon), skirting Wellesley Rd, with the objective to carry the sewage in the swamp out to sea, and in times of flood, silt deposits would go into the swamp, assisting with its reclamation, and prevent the inner harbour from silting up. And of course, the smell would disappear and “convert what threatened to become a fever-breeding swamp into a flowing river of sweet water”.

The cost of the project, completed in 1891, was shared with the Napier Borough Council and the Napier Harbour Board, with the Hawke’s Bay Herald reporting the cost blowout for the project was “like most engineering estimates when water has to be dealt with this proved fallacious”. The diversion was apparently successful until the flood in 1897 caused the Tutaekuri to abandon this course and once again flow directly to the Ahuriri lagoon. A system using ejector pumps was developed in 1908 to push the sewage, which was concentrated at the eastern part of the Inner Harbour into the outgoing tide. Another diversion of the Tūtaekurī took place in 1921, when a cut was made past the Meeanee township to take the river in a straight line, before travelling along a path alongside George’s Drive, and then into the Ahuriri lagoon. A cut was made in 1922 to divert the Tūtaekurī away from what was then Scinde Island (Mataruahou) and into the Ahuriri lagoon, further south.

Napier Boys’ High School which used to be on Scinde Island, had shifted to its present location in Chambers St when the plan to divert the Tūtaekurī to a route that would travel directly behind the school, before turning into George’s Drive. This naturally worried Napier Boys’ High School, and they were concerned about inadequate protection from the Tūtaekurī and raised their concerns with the Napier Harbour Board to keep “the course of the Tūtaekurī as clean and straight as possible”. Unfortunately, their worst fears were realised on Saturday, July 2, 1927, when at 5.30pm, the stop bank behind them gave way, and within almost an hour the grounds were three feet (9m) under water.

15
Napier Boys’ High School surrounded by flood waters in July 1927

Diversions prove no match for Tutaekuri River—By Michael Fowler

The 60 boarders, at Napier Boys High of which one was Hugh Baird, went from their ground-floor dormitories to the first floor when water invaded the building. Hugh tells the story that headmaster W A Armour, on the afternoon of July 3 took him first in the rowing boat to a mound and told him to stand in that spot and yell out if the water started to move higher up his body. Standing up to his knees in water, he watched Mr Armour rowing the other boys in groups away to higher ground, with him occasionally yelling out to Hugh “Is the water getting higher?” Hugh took the photo shown of Napier Boys’ High School underwater and as a newspaper report stated, “The great brick buildings stood out as an island.” Understandably, the Board of Governors of Napier Boys’ High School did not want a repeat of the flood, and asked engineer C D Kennedy to report protection measures, and to inform the Education Department of the school’s plight.

The Napier Harbour Board informed the board in 1928 that protective works done at Awatoto should protect the school which they appeared to have done, with no major flooding occurring before the Tūtaekurī would once again be diverted.

The diversion of the Tūtaekurī to a mouth at Waitangi had been talked about for more than 60 years, until finally in 1936 this occurred, with a new course formed at Powdrell’s bend (near Powdrell Rd). It wouldn’t however, be the last of disastrous floods, and only two years later, the Tūtaekurī in flood during April 1938, nearly wrecked the new road bridge at Waitangi.

A cohesive approach to river flood control was sought by forming four river boards, Taradale (1877), Clive (1891), Meeanee (1894) and Pukahu (1895). These boards did not act with each other’s best interests, and could be described as “dysfunctional”.

The 1897 Good Friday floods devastated not only Clive again, but also Napier and Hastings.

Neil and Pat Malcolm—Presented with their—25 year membership badges

At the CHB VCC AGM on 21st June, Neil and Pat Malcolm were each awarded the club’s 25 year badge, which was presented to them by the National President, Diane Quarrie.

Neil and Pat received the club’s “25 year badge” having been members for that period of time, starting out in the Hawke’s Bay Branch of the VCC before the CHB Branch began operations.

They have enjoyed owning their 1929 Ford Model A Tudor over those years and have travelled widely throughout New Zealand making many friends and contacts along the way.

They continue to contribute to the running of the CHB branch being involved with the committee, and have organised several runs for the branch in the past.

John and Margaret Cleland also received the club’s “25 year Badge” a few years ago having joined the VCC with a 1924 Ford Model T in the mid 1990’s. They have owned about five Model T’s during their membership of the club and now motor in a 1928 Ford Model A Tudor.

John and Margaret got a lot of pleasure out of restoring a 1913 Ford T Tourer and used it a lot once it was road-worthy. John didn’t know how to drive a Model T to begin with and it was rather a lot of fun teaching him, as it is with any newcomer to the delights of the vehicle. They have travelled widely with their Ford T’s both in the North Island and down South Island too, both with the VCC and the Model T Ford Club. Both the Clelands and the Foots are moving shortly to be closer to family in the Manawatu, and will be missed by their many friends in Central Hawke’s Bay.

John and Shirley Foot—Moving to Feilding — by Rod McKenzie

John and Shirley Foot moved to Central Hawke’s Bay from the Waikato about 12 years ago bringing their 1937 Buick Sedan with them. They are both very competitive rallyists and have picked up numerous placings at events throughout the country. John had a stint at the North Island Club Captain’s position for the National organisation, and arranged a major trip from north in the Waikato to Hawke’s Bay some years ago, culminating in the entrants on that event entering the North Island Easter Rally held in Hastings that year. The Buick was sold a few years ago to be eventually replaced by a 1990 Ford Falcon Sedan which is also used as their everyday car. John and Shirley were awarded the club’s “35 year Badge” for their long service to the running of the club a few years ago too.

Both the Cleland's and the Foots are moving shortly to be closer to family in the Manawatu,

Restoration

Our workshop is set up with repair processes for each type of worn or damaged component. The carburettor is stripped right down to the body, each piece is examined for wear, corrosion and, in the case of calibrated parts, tested for compliance with the original specifications and replaced where necessary with new parts. All the components are put through our cleaning procedure, separated into related groups for processing, restored to original finish and reassembled to bring the carburettor back to as near to original condition as is feasible. There are many variables so there is no set price for a restoration.

All jobs are individually priced before we start the process so we do need to see the carburettor before giving you an estimate. Usually there is no charge for assessing your carburettor except for any freight involved.

Bruce Turner a member of the CHB Branch of the VCC, has invited members to meet every Thursdays for coffee, a scone and a catch up. A very good excuse to get your very special vehicle out of the shed and go for a nice drive to meet like minded people.

Bruce has made this a regular event inviting everyone to just turn up every Thursday morning, meeting around 10.00am.
