September 7th 1896—Starting Electric Cars—The start of the race

On an electric car built by the Riker Electric Motor Company of Elizabeth, NJ won the first auto race in the United States. The race was hosted at the Narragansett Trotting Park on a mile long dirt oval at the state fairgrounds that was normally used for horse racing in Cranston, RI.

Automobile companies had sponsored the race to show off their new fangled electric. steam, and gas powered vehicles to an awestruck audience. About 60,000 state fairgoers attended the event, and many more people read about it in newspapers and magazines.

September 7th 1896—Starting Electric Cars—The start of the race

Seven cars entered the race. Along with the Riker Electric, there were five internal combustion cars and one other battery powered machine, built by the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company of New York City.

The race began slowly with spectators shouting "Get a horse!” as the early cars struggled at the starting line.

The Riker soon pulled ahead and won the race easily, finishing its five laps in about 15 minutes. The other electric car came in second, and a gas powered Duryea took third.

It’s hard to pinpoint the invention of the electric car to one inventor or country. Instead it was a series of breakthroughs from the battery to the electric motor. In the 1800s that led to the first electric vehicle on the road.

In the early part of the century, innovators in Hungary, the Netherlands and the United States including a blacksmith from Vermont began toying with the concept of a battery powered vehicle and created some of the first small scale electric cars. And while Robert Anderson, a British inventor, developed the first crude electric carriage around this same time, it wasn’t until the second half of the 19th century that French and English inventors built some of the first practical electric cars.

In the U.S., the first successful electric car made its debut around 1890 thanks to William Morrison, a chemist who lived in Des Moines, Iowa. His six passenger vehicle capable of a top speed of 14 miles per hour was little more than an electrified wagon, but it helped spark interest in electric vehicles.

Over the next few years, electric vehicles from different automakers began popping up across the U.S. New York City even had a fleet of more than 60 electric taxis. By 1900, electric cars were at their heyday, accounting for around a third of all vehicles on the road. During the next 10 years, they continued to show strong sales. It’s hard to pinpoint the invention of the electric car to one inventor or country. Instead it was a series of breakthroughs from the battery to the electric motor in the 1800s that led to the first electric vehicle on the road.

Thomas Edison takes on electric vehicle batteries. Many innovators take note of the electric cars high demand, exploring ways to improve the technology. Thomas Edison thought the electric vehicles were a superior mode of transportation and worked to build a better battery.

Electric cars reach their heyday, and by the turn of the Century electric vehicles are all the rage in the US, accounting for around a third of all vehicles on the Road. Picture above is Fifth Avenue in New York City showing the range of vehicle options available.

All entrants for this tour will be sent a note by email from us about a week before departure, which will detail a few things you will need and to watch out for on the trip. We look forward to a few days of fun and comradery with our old car driving friends.

The Starter Motor

On August 17, 1915, Charles F. Kettering received his patent for the electric self starter.

When many early car owners wanted to go for a drive, they had to pull a hand crank to initiate engine rotation. These cranks were heavy and sometimes dangerous, even deadly, if not timed correctly. Many owners had their arm broken when a vehicle “back fired”. To solve this problem, Henry Leland, who was running a Cadillac at the time, called upon Kettering’s help.

A man named Clyde Coleman received a patent for an electric self starter in 1903, but it was too large. Coleman sold his patent to Delco, which was co founded by Kettering. As a result, Kettering began his project looking to improve on Coleman’s design. In 1911, Kettering completed a working starter small enough to fit in the car while providing enough power for the engine, and it was introduced in the 1912 Cadillac. Charles Franklin Kettering born August 29, 1876 and died November 25, 1958 sometimes known as Charles Fredrick Kettering was an American inventor, engineer, businessman, and the holder of 186 patents. He was a founder of Delco, and was head of research at General Motors from 1920 to 1947. Among his most widely used automotive developments were the electrical starting motor and leaded gasoline. In association with the DuPont Chemical Company, he was also responsible for the invention of Freon refrigerant for refrigeration and air conditioning systems. At DuPont he also was responsible for the development of Duco lacquers and enamels, the first practical coloured paints for mass produced automobiles. While working with the Dayton Wright Company he developed the Bug, aerial torpedo, considered the world's first aerial missile.

He led the advancement of practical, lightweight two stroke diesel engines, revolutionizing the locomotive and heavy equipment industries. In 1927, he founded the Kettering Foundation, a non partisan research foundation, and was featured on the cover of Time magazine in January 1933 Charles was born in Loudonville, Ohio, United States, the fourth of five children of Jacob Henry Kettering and Martha (Hunter) Kettering's poor eyesight gave him headaches in school. After graduation he followed his sister Emma into a teaching position at Bunker Hill School. By all accounts he was an engaging and innovative teacher. He attracted students to evening scientific demonstrations on electricity, heat, magnetism, and gravity.

He took classes at the College of Wooster, before transferring to Ohio State University He was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. Eye problems forced him to withdraw, and he took a job as foreman of a telephone line crew. At first, the termination of his studies caused him to be depressed. Then he found ways to apply his electrical engineering skills on the job, and his spirits revived. He also met his future wife, Olive Williams. When his eye condition improved, he was able to return to his studies and graduated from OSU in 1904 with an electrical engineering degree.

Chairman's Report—October 2022

I said in last Months report ‘Spring had Sprung’ It hasn’t sprung that well, plenty of mud under foot at the moment.

Events such as Taniwha Daffodil run never happened due to the Rain. Taniwha closed early this year.

Wayne McDonagh had some engine problems of his won which required some alterations to his main pump. But is recovering well.

Lyn and Sandra Cross lost a brother and sister recently, our thoughts are with you at this sad time.

The main event of this month was the 150 year Jubilee Norsewood Rally organised and well run by the Domper’s, the Halfords and the Cheers, 29 cars and 65 people enjoyed the run. The day was damp and a little muddy underfoot, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of all who attended. Like true early explorers we experienced what they went through 150 years ago. Many places of interest were visited. A lunch break was held at the Makotuku Hall, soup and buns, great on a day like that. This was a fundraiser for the hall maintenance.

The October Meal and Meeting will be held at the Waipukurau bowling Club on Tuesday 11th due to the large number of our members going on Rod and Scarlets East Cape Adventure.

A reminder the CHB VCC Annual Veteran Rally is on Saturday 19th November, entries close on Friday, October 21st.

Hopefully soon we will need our sun hats. Keith Hopping is negotiating a supply of these with the VCC Logo embroidered on, if you are interested please contact Keith at keithhopping@gmail.com

That’s all for BLUE September

Greetings everyone,

The bid event in the last few weeks was the Daffodil Rally for Cancer, a big day it was too for the CHB branch with around 70 cars participating. The weather played ball as well, which lately you wouldn't put your money on it doing so. Ken Lyons gave an excellent report in the Bleat along with many supporting photos. Thank you Ken. Our total funds raised was over $4000, so a big thank you to all involved.

From that day there were some prospective new members so hopefully they liked what they saw and heard and will join the club.

Sunday 25th September there was a club run around the Norsewood area incorporating several places of interest for us to call on. Lunch was at the Makotoku Hall.

Rod's run around the East Coast is now only a few days away, hopefully all entrants have a trouble free and fun time.

The Torque Heads coffee group is going strong supporting cafés around CHB.

The Veteran Rally in Dannevirke has around a dozen entries which is on a par with other years, so looking forward to that in November. The Homestead run will be held for all members on the Sunday.

The Manawatu Branch has its 60th anniversary run on October 22 24, the entry form for that is in the Bleat.

Our October branch Meal and meeting is to be held on Tuesday 11th October which is a week earlier than usual. Any ideas for a run in October for those not going up the coast will be appreciated.

Stay Safe and Drive Carefully.

Hebley, who lives in Upper Hutt, drives from Wellington up to New Plymouth and back six days a week for his job, which includes delivering the Whanganui Chronicle.

National Veteran Rally

Registration is open to all Veteran Vehicles manufactured before 31 Dec.1918 VIC required.

The rally is based in the expansive grounds of LaValla Estate less than 2km from the historical small township of Tuakau. Tuakau is located in the district of Franklin. Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the west coast and is known as the breadbasket of Auckland, growing potatoes, vegetables, and other products on its rich volcanic soils. The area offers great motoring country for veteran vehicles. To reach Tuakau and LaValla, those coming from the South can leave the Waikato Expressway (SH1) at Pokeno, just South of the Bombay Hills. Those coming from the north exit the motorway at Bombay. The registration fee covers: ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast; light refreshments at start and finish of each day’s run; three lunches; final banquet dinner; Movie Night (in the small cinema at LaValla); Rally Pack and plaque.

Key Dates

The event runs over the last weekend of February, the weekend following the Art Deco Festival in Napier. The rally commences on Friday morning with registration from 8.30am and breakfast and rally briefing from 9.00am to 10.00am ready to depart on the first day’s run at 10.30am. The rally concludes with a celebratory dinner and awards on Sunday Evening.

Rally Headquarters

The rally is based at LaValla. Registration, the first ‘Meet & Greet’ breakfast and the final dinner are held at LaValla. Each day’s run departs and finishes at LaValla with light refreshments. There will be ample opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new friends in a beautiful, relaxing setting. LaValla has an interesting history as a former Marist college, now in private ownership. It is less than 2km out of the township of Tuakau, made up of well maintained and expansive grounds (109 acres) overlooking rural countryside. LaValla provides a secure site where veteran vehicles, modern cars and trailers can be safely parked for the duration. There is limited accommodation at LaValla, and more accommodation is also available at the nearby boutique Tuakau Hotel. Other options are the motels in Pukekohe and Pokeno.

Rally Programme

Franklin lies between State Highway 1 and the West Coast, bounded to its South by the Waikato River. Built up areas, busy roads and steep roads will be avoided. There are short and long routes each day.

Day 1. The route uses roads criss crossing the Bombay Hills including the old main roads before the mo torway was opened.

Day 2. The route crosses the Waikato River on the iconic Tuakau Bridge and follows the river to its mouth at Port Waikato.

Day 3. The destination is the historical port town of Waiuku, taking in Glenbrook Vintage railway close by.

VERO INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF HISTORIC MOTORING

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

The Management Committee is seeking expressions of interest from Branches who think their corner of New Zealand would be ideal for the next Festival.

By way of background, the Festival is not hosted or organised by a Branch. A Festival Director would be appointed by the Management Committee to run the event who would then select a committee for organising it. Closer to the time some assistance from Branch members may be required for specific tasks.

What we are looking for

A region which has a variety of accommodation predominantly in reasonably close proximity to the festival venue (such as hotels, motels, Air BnB, camping grounds, school hostels). Realistically we would be looking for enough accommodation for say 1000 people (most of them couples) so approximately 450 to 500 accommodation units.

A venue that could hold up to 1000 people for opening & closing ceremonies and entertainment nights. Alternatively if this is not available, marquees could be used.

A wide variety of roads (mainly off main highways) with interesting destinations. Ideally the Festival would be held within the next 5 years.

What do we need from you

• We invite Branches to put together a proposal showcasing their region and setting out information regarding accommodation, venues, roads and destinations as above.

• Send it to president@vcc.org.nz for consideration by 30 October 2022.

• Please feel free to have a chat with either myself, Greg or Gaynor Terrill at the AGM in August, or by phone if you’d like to know more.

The 2022 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring held in Taranaki was very successful on all counts, feedback from participants and the Executive of the VCC is that we should hold another.

For Sale

The story behind this sale is Philip Krueger and his wife Judy who hail from Texas, have a house in Napier and they have been coming here since the mid nineties for several months each year around Art Deco time. Both are keen swimmers and in 2018 they made a unique contribution to the Napier Aquatic Centre, meaning that over 65s who are Super Gold cardholders would be able to use the Napier Aquatic Centre for just $1 a time , however as Philip and Judy have not been able to get back for two and a half years the Council have now handed them a substantial bill, hence selling the car. They are open to offers and need to finalise the sale by mid Sept, when they head home.

In Philip’s words “and as I say, any offer will be considered and all will go to pay our bill for the "Super Swim" with the Council”.

My phone here is: 029 0209 2562 if there are any questions. Ta for your help! Cheers!

Philip Krueger has a Sunbeam Talbot 90 offered for a quick sale. Refer Attached photo
