Early Days of Driver’s Education—

I remember during my high school days eagerly awaiting my 16th birthday so I could sign up for driver’s education. Back then, driver’s education was a normal part of the school curriculum. Today, high school students seeking driver’s education must turn to a variety of privately owned driver training school. When funding is available the NZ Police offer their time to teach the NZ road code theory to secondary school students.

This is a story about the history of driver's education and the fond memories many of us still may have of sitting behind that steering wheel for the first time.

The year was 1920 when school districts in the U.S. first provided instruction for traffic safety. In the beginning, it was integrated with other subjects and taught in either or both secondary and high schools. The public school district in Gilbert, Minnesota first offered a separate course in driver training in 1927, and then in 1933 the late Mr. Amos Neyhart offered driver’s education including road instruction at a State College high school in Pennsylvania. In the following year, Mr. Newyart reported on this great program and its success to the National Safety Congress in Chicago. Clearwater High School in Delaware also reported success in their driver training classes in 1934. Two years later, a college-credit course for teachers was offered at the Pennsylvania State College.

In Michigan, the American Automobile Association (AAA) had provided a driver's education course to High School students with a successful program. In addition, several high schools offered textbooks that were published and used from the mid-1930s to 1950s. The books were titled, “Man and the Motor Car” printed by the National Conservation Bureau and later by the Centre for Safety Education at New York University. “Man and the Motor Car,” was first published in 1936 and marked the first time a book on driver training was widely used in U.S. high schools. The first edition was revised and made available to public schools in 1941.

Early Days of Driver’s Education—

The “Man and the Motor Car” textbook provided its students with many traffic problem details, and it was a challenge to young drivers on how to drive correctly. For many years, “Man and the Motor Car” helped millions of students all over the United States to become responsible and safe drivers for many years.

Another popular book among high schools during the 1960s and 1970s was “Sportsmanlike Driving,” published by the Driver Education Specialist American Automobile Association in Washington, D. C. The book highlighted pedestrian safety while driving as well as driving under adverse or special conditions. The textbook was successful for many years and had provided many students with needed information to become great drivers

Starting the 1940s, a hands-on driver training tool was developed called the Aetna Drivetrainer. Because of this invention, the student classroom all of a sudden became a behind-the-wheel training program. The Drivetrainers looked like bumper cars and a series of short films were produced covering many aspects of practice driving.

The small dummy cars were equipped with a variety of controls. As the students would view the film, their reaction and responses to driving situations were recorded electronically on individual cards. This multiple-type trainer had provided training for up to 20 students at a time. At the time, it served to supplement practice driving.

It should also be noted, that one of the first driving ranges for students and adults in this country was located at Mumford High School in Detroit, Michigan.

By the late 1990s, Michigan schools began to eliminate the driver’s educational programs. Most of the discontinuation for free driver’s education courses started in Macomb County with school district officials citing cost overruns. Today, a driver’s educational course can cost many parents between $250 to 300 dollars for training.

All participants who have advised us that they intend coming on the “Mid-week Run” in October, will receive an email in early October from us.

This will outline where we will be starting from and a few other things relevant to the run.

Combined Dinner and Meeting with the Manawatu Branch in Dannevirke 20th September

Our September dinner and meeting was held in Dannevirke which was combined with the Manawatu Branch, plus a couple from the Wairarapa, a good night was had by all. As soon as we walked in the door and while waiting for our meal Laurie Malcolmson had our brains working overtime with a quiz. It was a competition between the clubs with a trophy to be won.

The rather handsome trophy went to the Manawatu Branch which was accepted by Derek Haycock. Congratulations Manawatu. Make the most of it because CHB will be picking it up next year.

The Piston Trophy was supplied by CHB Chairman, Gary Weaver, and designed by Keith Hopping. Thank you both. “Gary” we're just wondering what happened to the other 7??

A “Big Thanks” to all the staff of the Dannevirke Citizens Club, for the fantastic meal.

For this year's event we want to encourage anyone with a veteran car, mobile or not, or even if you just have an interest in veteran cars to join in the weekend’s activities.

Friday 3rd

Saturday 4th

Is an easy run taking in a veteran restoration project, visit to the Faraday Centre, BYO picnic lunch at a splendid homestead, ending with a visit to my place for a shed inspection etc in the afternoon. Saturday evening will be dinner at a local club.

Sunday 5th

Well worth the trip through to join the veterans to view the Lemmon’s Trust Museum Collection. CHB participants will be leaving Tavistock Place at 9.30am to travel to Napier. The bridge at Waiohiki is all good so come through Korokipo Rd (HWY50) to Gloucester St in Taradale then left into Puketapu Road, right into Church Road, left into Puketitiri Rd, right into Seafield Rd, left into Hedgeley Rd. Your destination is 141 Hedgeley Road, near a civil Defence Assemble point sign, fairly steep drive up to the Museum. Leave the same way, turn right into Seafield Rd, left into Puketapu Rd to Tony’s place, he will let us know the number at Lemmon's. Bring you own lunch, chair etc, plenty of hot water, coffee, tea etc at Tony’s.

There is NO Entry Fee. There is a charge for the Faraday Centre and Lemmon’s Collection. Pay as you go.

Chairman's Report—October—2023

Fair to say some of us are catching our breathe after the fantastic CHB Daffodil fund-raising Rally for Cancer.

On the 20th September we had a combined meeting with the Manawatu Branch a the Dannevirke Services and Citizens club, well attended by both clubs. Laurie and Gloria Malcomson organized a quiz night. Keith Hopping made a Trophy for the event called. “The Piston Broke Trophy” A fabulous looking trophy, this year it was won by the Manawatu branch, “Congratulations”

On Saturday the 23rd September Bruce Poole and Ken Lyons had their CHB VCC 1st Vintage Rally, the results will be posted in a report.

Members are still taking about the 10 pin bowling event held in Hastings.

“Congratulations” to Maureen James the recipient of a CHB Community Services award for services to sport Tennis & Squash.

Well I have finally retired from being an electrician, this happened on Friday 22nd of September, 58 years of sparky working in CHB and with the last 43 years operating Weaver’s Electrical. Time to work for Janet now.

By the time you read this report Janet and I will be in America on a tour and visiting family and a tour of the Shelby Mustang Factory in Los Vegus Nevada, a highlight for me.

NO Thursday morning coffee and scones for a few weeks, I’m sure I’ll cope with this.

Interesting event coming up in October with Rod and Scarlett’s Manawatu adventure.

So members get out and support the events that others organise, a lot of work goes into putting these events together.

Club Captains Report—Laurie's Lot—October—2023

On August 24th 22 of our members with various degrees of competence took to the bowling alley in Hastings. A lot of laughs had by all, some frustration but seemingly the more we played the better we all got. The next day though wasn't so funny with aching muscles all over especially down one side.

Thanks go to Ken for organising the day, all concerned are up for more.

Daffodil Day has been and gone and what a huge success it was.

Saturday 23rd was Bruces Vintage Rally with all members invited.

Rod's tour of the Manawatu is in October with details in depth to follow via email.

The CHB Veteran Rally is being held on November 3rd 4th and 5th based in Taradale.

On Sunday 5th, all club members will enjoy a run to Lemmon's Museum in Napier. We will be leaving Tavistock Place at 9.30am to travel up to Napier. After the museum visit we will go to Tony Prebensen's place for a BYO lunch.

Later in November there is a cryptic cruise around Waipukurau and Waipawa, with lunch at a picturesque spot on a farm in the Waipukarau area.

The Christmas Party is at Oruawharo on 9th December. Club service awards to be presented. Christmas fairies and elves invited.

Till next time, stay safe

Manawatu Branch Vintage Rally 2023 written by Rod McKenzie

On Saturday 9th September Rod McKenzie and Bruce Poole set off from Waipukurau at 7:05am to go to the Manawatu Vintage Car Club’s Annual “Vintage Only Rally” in Bruce’s rather lovely 1930 Chrysler 77 Roadster.

Last year the number of entrants to the rally included 17 vintage cars and 10 other club eligible vehicles, totalling 27 entrants. There were not quite so many this year.

We arrived at Fitzroy Park which is at the eastern end of Main St, gassed up at the Caltex station bedside the park and then joined with the other entrants who were arriving to park up for the start. Entrants were from the Manawatu Branch, Wanganui and the CHB crew, which included four 1929-30 Chevrolets, three Ford Model A’s [including John and Margaret Cleland in their 1929 Tudor], 2 Austin Sevens and the CHB lads in the 1930 Chrysler. Also in attendance were a few later model club eligible cars including a very tidy Whanganui based Austin A35 from the late 1950’s.

After a short briefing from the organiser, Cliff Bennett, who explained it was to be a non-competitive run he added that there are number of cards with letters written on them for the crews to keep an eye out for enroute to be recorded. We were told that the first one would be at the top of the Pahiatua Track, which was found. The route took the entrants down to the Ballance Rd corner, past Ballance through to the old Manawatu Gorge. We had a quick look at the new road which is going to traverse the Ruahine Range replacing the Saddle Road before we turned right to follow Troop Rd back to Highway 2. Quiet back country roads lead us through Hopelands and back toward Mangatainoka before we took a left turn which sent us along a valley over country Bruce had not been through before. All the while the eyes were skinned looking for the cardboard checks. We found six checks altogether prior to arriving at the Ekatahuna Hotel where there was a fabulous lunch waiting for the 33 participants. We were joined there by a couple of cars from the Wairarapa including a Bull-nosed Morris and Laurie Cocker from Rongotea in his much-travelled 1906 Cadillac.

After lunch we set off at about 2:00pm along roads on the western side of SH2 coming out at the bottom of the Pahiatua Track before taking a winding metal road that lead us back toward the Track and a climb back over the hill again. We made our way back to the VCC clubrooms for a chat and the lovely BBQ dinner the club arranged for the entrants.

The combined 10 Silent Check letters were supposed to make up the phrase “Ford Model T” which were not put out in order. We found six, one ahead of the next best which meant the blokes from CHB brought home the winning plaque and the glory. So here we go again, with Bruce taking out another win at a Manawatu VCC Rally for the second time in a year.

Thank you to the Manawatu branch for another great event, pleasant company, and new roads not traversed before.

It would be commendable to have more CHB members entering these relatively local rallies, as if we support their branch events, their members will likely support our CHB events thus boosting numbers. Please consider entering your elderly vehicle into one of the neighbouring branches’ events in the future. You may even bring home the spoils!

Congratulations Bruce and Rod Winners

EMAIL RECEIVED FROM NATIONAL OFFICE (Abridged)

Dear Branch Member's

Subscription invoice renewals for the subscription year 1 November 2023 31 October 2024 have now been emailed to all members with an email address and posted to the remainder of our members. For those members who have had the invoices emailed to them, please check your spam/folder as our National Office bulk emails tend to end up there. If members add our bulk email address nationaloffice@vccnz.nz <mailto:nationaloffice@vccnz.nz> to their safe addresses list, then this should prevent this occurring again in the future.

I have had a number of invoice emails bounce back as undeliverable, and I am steadily working my way through them. We have had some email clients reject our emails as they suspect them as spam due to recent tightening of their spam filters. For those members I am resending the invoice from my admin@vcc.org.nz mailto:admin@vcc.org.nz email address and they seem to be getting through. Where the invoice bounces back us undeliverable due to the email address not existing etc, then the invoice is being printed and posted.

Company Profile

NZ’s finest & most experienced Carburettor Sales and team. Weber, Dellorto, SU, Solex, Stromberg & most other makes, serviced, restored and repaired.

• New carburettors supplied and fitted.

• Worn carburettors serviced to new condition.

• Restoration of carburettors to the highest concours standards.

• Damaged carburettors repaired.

• Obsolete & hard to find components manufactured.

Restoration

Our workshop is set up with repair processes for each type of worn or damaged component. The carburettor is stripped right down to the body, each piece is examined for wear, corrosion and, in the case of calibrated parts, tested for compliance with the original specifications and replaced where necessary with new parts. All the components are put through our cleaning procedure, separated into related groups for processing, restored to original finish and reassembled to bring the carburettor back to as near to original condition as is feasible. There are many variables so there is no set price for a restoration.

All jobs are individually priced before we start the process so we do need to see the carburettor before giving you an estimate. Usually there is no charge for assessing your carburettor except for any freight involved.

I can very much recommend this company, Weber Specialty. After years of carburettor instability with my 1974 Triumph Spitfire twin carburettors, my son in-law took it into Weber specialty where the twin carburettors were over hauled and refitted. The difference is amazing, she starts easily now and is running very sweetly. Joyce Calder, Bleat Editor.
