From there we will travel to Whakamaramara, leaving the main road there, we will travel by an easy uphill drive to the Puketoki Reserve. This reserve is run by a volunteer group who have created some easy bush walks and is the site of a very early sawmill and railway, explanatory plaques outline the history of this interesting area. Chairman’s Chat by John Redding
Hello Club members, I hope you are all well and enjoying life. Another month has slipped by and spring is really here now. I know many members are working quietly away in their garages, some doing major work and others doing minor changes to their cars. A reminder to all for our Swap Meet which is only weeks away now and organisation is almost complete. Ken Frew and his team have been working very hard and hopefully it will turn out to be a great event, weather permitting. He has asked members to support him by bringing their cars for display as a large turnout will make this day a great success. Please support this swap meet as it is the only day set aside each year especially to raise money for our club.. Many members work away quietly behind the scenes doing things for our club and I thank them very much. Unfortunately it does always seem to be the same members so please offer your assistance as many hands make light work.
After last months club meeting a few of you came forward to offer their help doing end of month runs, and that was really appreciated. As I said at that meeting I would arrange the end of month run for September and I did. Unfortunately I made a few mistakes in the instructions and nearly caused some matrimonial disputes, however I think everyone drove home together at the end of the day. In fact I myself got lost on my own instructions. How bad is that!!! Anyway when we met for morning tea and lunch it was a bit of a topic of conversation and everyone seemed happy. So don't forget to polish up those cars ready for your swap meet and I will see you all soon. Cheers John.

As most of the club are aware, the Smylies, Staffords and Goldsmiths are traveling Route 66. They did want to take their model A’s over but proved too much of a task so hired Mustangs. Photos are arriving aplenty from Kaaren which are being put on the club facebook site. The latest is they have just arrived in Springfield where Abraham Lincoln lived and sent a group photo for the Klaxon.

Your Committee has been depleted and that will continue until such time as Kaaren, Jim, Brian and Linda return from overseas. A good number of you will be kept up to date by our illustrious Club Captain Kaaren. The information is coming in thick and fast on all their adventures in the U.S.A. At the present time, the group will be enjoying Route 66 in their Mustangs. The Ladies Luncheon at Linda and Doug’s home was attended by a small group of us who enjoyed the hospitality of this very nice couple. Doug has done some serious renovations to their warm and unique home. He has a museum of sorts out the back complete with the old cow bells that many of you will remember. While Linda is overseas, please be aware that Jill has taken over the sale of club apparel. “Folks we have a problem.” Julie in Head Office has reported several instances of club members paying their membership via internet banking and forgetting to identify themselves and as such are giving their money away. One person in particular just put “Transfer” What does that tell us? “Nothing.” Please be aware that if you do not receive your Klaxon or you feel you have been left out in the cold, you may be one of the dozens of members who have made a mistake. Welfare Report by Linda Downey The spring weather must be lifting everyone's spirits and making people feel so much better and brighter because this month I have been told of only one unwell person - Murray Tom's partner Joy. Hope you're feeling better now Joy. Some of our members may have known Rosalie Smith of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. Rosalie sadly passed away earlier this month. All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. Hi All, I am not sure what happened to September. It just seemed to arrive and before I realized we were at the end of the month and time to put out another mag. Yvonne and I attended the mid week run and really enjoyed it. While kiwifruit seems like a boring subject, it is one of the major industries in the BOP. Many pack houses I used to do work in have now disappeared leaving only major players and quite large equipment. I can remember this pack house being only a small establishment with 1 grader and store. Now multiple large graders and 33 stores. While we ourselves did not venture to the orchard, that too has advanced to being a covered orchard giving a longer and more reliable season. Was a bit mind numbing to me. I have been receiving several emails from the Smylies, Staffords and Goldsmiths this month doing the Route 66 tour in USA in almost new Mustang cars. Also visiting museums etc. as well. I would like to say a huge thankyou Kaaren for the photos and keeping in touch. I have been loading them on the Club Facebook site (accessible only to our members) and receiving a lot of likes. In a recent Club Captains report Kaaren had put 2 questions and the answers from The VCC head office. The one answer that concerned me was the attitude taken as regarding our vehicles participating in rallies. It goes as follows. Question: Some time ago the management committee instructed branches not to police cars wanting to participate in runs when they didn't have a WOF or Rego, therefore the question is has the official stance changed on this Answer: If branches write a requirement on an entry form or have it as a requirement , then the branch must administer it. So at scrutineering, all vehicles must be checked. As the law of the land stands, it is the responsibility of vehicle owners and drivers, if they are driving on public roads, they legally must have a WOF, Rego and a current drivers licence. Therefore it should not be placed as a requirement on an entry form, otherwise the branch will have to police it. Now during my time cruising around and taking photos of vehicles, I have become aware that some vehicles are carrying a number plate that does not belong to that vehicle. The owners are obviously using one number plate and Rego for more than one vehicle. It also means that vehicle HAS NOT undergone a WOF check. I do not for a minute believe that it is only happening in our club. While in legal terms the driver is breaking the law, and taking a chance that he wont be caught, the club has also taken it for granted that all vehicles comply and are road legal. So the above answer from the VCC to me is very unsatisfactory. Should an accident occur and the club is found to have been holding a rally in which that vehicle was participating, what answer could be given when asked “what steps or checks are taken to ensure that all participants are legally able to participate”. The answer would be an embarrassing, “no steps are taken or checks”. This needs attending to and if a check needs to be done, then so be it. However the Health and Safety Act applies itself to more than just our vehicles. Our members have in our branch yet to hear what progress is being made and not just a whitewash answer that a lot of work is being done. Paul

Have you transferred from another branch If you are a Vero member you will need to contact and advise Vero of your change of address and also change of VCC branch. All branches receive a small commission from Vero for members that hold policies with them. It is essential to notify Vero that you are a VCC member and have changed branches. This is so the commission goes to the correct branch. This is not automatically done by the VCC even if you have changed your address with them

The Years 1936 – 1937 1936 Jean Batten arrived at Mangere, Auckland after flying from Australia in a record 10 1/2 hours on the last leg of her 11 day journey from London. This was Reflections the first solo flight from England to NZ. 1936: The National Road Safety Council met for the first time. 1936: A 30mph speed limit is introduced for built up areas. 1936: The Ford Motor Co NZ began assembling vehicles in Lower Hutt. 1936: Construction began on the first 6 railcars destined for the Wairarapa line and the Road Services branch began expanding this year. 1936: The interislander ferry Rangatira was refloated after running aground west of Wellington Harbour entrance. 1936: The Union Airlines began regular service between Dunedin and Palmerston, and later from Wellington to Auckland via Palmerston Nth and New Plymouth using Lockheed Electras. 1937: The first Road Code was published and a WOF was required for all vehicles. 1937: The record was broken for Sydney to Auckland by the Union Steam Ship Company liner, The Awatea. Taking only 2 days 7 hours and 13 min. 1937: The Wellington Railway station was opened. 1937: Aviation history was made when flying boats from Southampton and San Francisco touch down on Auckland, Waitemata Harbour 24 hours apart. 1937: The Royal NZ Airforce became a separate branch of the defence force with 24 officers and 156 other ranks. 11
Mid-Week Run September 13th to Trevelyan’s Packhouse Complex, Te Puke.
The meeting place for September’s midweek run was Trevelyan’s packhouse in Te Puke. For nearly all the around 30 VCC folk who turned up, this was their first visit to a Kiwifruit Packhouse/ Coolstore Complex and it proved to be most educational. Over morning tea, Rachel Brodie, the Sustainability Manager, spoke to us about the beginnings, the ethos, the range of operations and growth of this premier establishment in the kiwifruit industry. We learned about their core values and the way they employ and treat their staff, about bio-security of their product and maintenance of their whole operation. We were told that Trevelyan’s is the largest single-site complex in the country and last year packed 33 million trays of kiwifruit (plus avocados in the ‘off season’). As an example of the way they treat their staff, all those working today were given extra time over morning tea to come out and have a look at the vintage and classic cars parked outside – some wanted a photo of themselves in the driving seat! Following that, we all donned hi-vis jackets and hair nets for our tour around the complex. With Rachel and Marie as our guides we walked carefully along the edges of the roadways where forklifts whizzed up and down at ‘breakneck’ speed. We went into a coolstore with giant fans keeping the temperature around 2 degrees Celsius (brrrrr!) then we listened as Donna showed us the recycling area and told us the remarkable progress the business has made in the last five years by reducing their landfill rubbish by 70% and by providing a recyclable market for a good deal of the huge volume of rubbish generated by a working packhouse.

Next was a walk through the packing area from the ‘bin dump’ area where fruit enters the processing chain to where it is packed and documented ready for export. At this time of the year, fruit from the coolstores is being checked to comply with industry standards and repacked where it is found to have failed. From there we returned to the canteen to thank Trevelyans staff and to get our instructions for the next stage of the run. Barry and Jenny handed out sheets with maps guiding us along Old Coach Road to our last stop at Ken Edkin’s Kiwifruit Orchard on SH2. We lost a few cars at this stage who somehow managed to ‘take a wrong turning’ and missed out on seeing the 34 hectares of ‘covered’ orchard managed by Ken and his son Paul. The sight of such a huge area under white netting cover was unusual and spectacular but we learned that the huge outlay in expense was amply rewarded with increased cropping and superior fruit quality. The cover protected the vines from both wind and hail and raised the temperature inside the enclosure by enough degrees to produce bettersized fruit and less damage from birds and the elements. Vines planted two years ago have already produced a reasonable crop and next April will carry 10,000 trays per hectare! The last stage of our run was back into Te Puke where at 1pm we rolled in to Molly’s Restaurant for lunch – we were ready for it after a busy and informative morning.

END OF MONTH RUN SUNDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 2017 Chairman John announced at the September club meeting that he would organise the end of the month run and that we would find out all about it in due course. With his Club Captain Kaaren Smiley currently away on a jaunt down Route 66 with husband Jim, Owen and Margaret Goldsmith and David & Val Stafford, there was no one to send out colourful reminders as to where what and how it would happen. There was nothing in the Klaxon. However, John did manage to delegate Bryce Strong to send out an email to all and sundry that we should meet up at the club house at 9am for the End of Month Run. Despite all this, fifteen cars turned up at the appointed time with their drivers and passengers still wiping the ‘sleepy man’ from their eyes (having had to get up an hour earlier than usual because the clocks went forward that night)! After a quick briefing, Chairman John presented us each with a chocolate fish and then waved us off advising that we had to follow the run instructions to the letter. This is what our predominantly female co-drivers were confronted with: HEAD SOUTH ON STATE HIGHWAY 29 TO RUAHIHI POWER STATION, THEN TAKE THE FIRST RIGHT AND DO NOT ENTER KUMIKUMI ROAD. DO NOT ENTER TEBBUTTS ACCESS EITHER. This was going to be fun (apparently there were a number of serious marital discussions as to which direction south was)! The sun shone; the cars purred along, and we found ourselves going up the back-country shingle road towards the Minden lookout. It was at this point that the clutch in Jack van den Hoven’s Studebaker decided to give up. Cars began to line up behind Jack’s. Heads were scratched. What to do? Eventually it was decided to call the AA and we left Jack in the company of Peter Woodend as he had a cell phone. Jenny van den Hoven wisely swapped cars and joined John Payne in his modern. Our morning tea was to be had at Omokoroa Domain. But because some of us weren’t sure where the domain was, cars bunched together in three different places – some by the dairy carpark, others on the sea front promenade, and the remainder in the sea front domain. It is such a lovely area and we all enjoyed the environment. The second half of our drive took us up the back country roads to Katikati and then onto Bowentown Beach Reserve where we gathered under some large trees near the beach and enjoyed our lunches. Of the fifteen cars present, the oldest was Allan and Dawn Webb’s 1930 Model A and the youngest was Colin and Mary Anderson’s 1982 Ford Capri – both Fords! Richard Salt from Te Puke travelled the furthest,

whilst Joe and Jill Scott and Margaret and Bob McGarva came from Welcome Bay. I believe that the rest of us were all local. Our thanks goes to John and Lindsay Redding for organising such a pleasant Sunday meander through the beautiful coastal scenery that we are blessed to have surrounding us. Chris Cole

2017 GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE
WEDNESDAY 20 DECEMBER Please mark this date in your diary.
Each year, the December “Glimpse of the Future” Mid-week Run allows us to bring a bit of CHRISTMAS CHEER to the residents of some of the numerous retirement facilities located in the Bay of Plenty. This year we will commence the run at Omokoroa Country Estate and then drive past Acacia Park Respite Care residents. We will then proceed onto Waipuna Hospice where we will enjoy a morning tea whilst the Fund Raising Manager explains the financial challenges of running this amazing facility. After our morning tea we will drive into Matua Life Care Village. Residents from the independent villas may join the occupants of Radius Matua’s rest home and hospital facilities where, once again, the staff will have their patients lined up in wheelchairs and beds to admire our cars. The run will end at Bob Owens Retirement Village where we will be hosted to a light Christmas lunch whilst some of the five hundred residents come to admire our cars and chat with us. The emphasis is on Christmas Cheer. Many of the residents and patients in these facilities spend Christmas alone and lonely. Let’s light up their lives by dressing up the cars, wearing funny hats, and having a chat with our more elderly residents. You never know, you may even meet the original owner of your car – as I did one year! At 9.45am on Wednesday 20 December, please line your cars up along Omokoroa Road just passed the second roundabout (about 3 kms from SH2). Joe & Jill Scott’s Old Ford Truck (Little Giant) In the mid 1980s our two children were young and I worked for the Ministry of Transport Heavy Motor Vehicle Testing Agency in Great North Road, Grey Lynn. Had rebuilt a friend’s MkII Jaguar along with a Model A Ford van. What a contrast. Now it is time to be selfish and do a project for myself. Time went by to 1986 and one of my work colleagues Bill Jongste told me about an old Ford truck on a farm in Redvale (Silverdale.) Kevin & I went out to have a look. The owner, Dennis Heaton, a truck dealer based on the Shore took us down to the old cow shed and we followed him into the disused separator room. There was a pile of Model A guards, radiator, bonnet etc. looking the worst for wear. Out the back Dennis lifted away two sheets of roofing iron. Behold the chassis, complete with Tinken diff, a 3 speed gearbox, a splitter box and behind, wheels still fitted with the original Michel high pressure tyres. The model A motor is all there but looks sad. Unlike the model A with rod brakes this AA truck was a much larger vehicle and it relied on one long cable with a series of jockey wheels to operate the brakes. I said to Kevin, “mate look at the size of that diff and brake drums.” The front brakes and axle look very light. When one thinks of the complexity of the Mercedes bus brakes that I was required to be familiar with (all part of the job) and this old truck, by God I was in love. “Okay Dennis, where is the rest of it?” The cabs up at my son’s house a few miles away. It will be a bit of a major to get it out, under a ton of hay bales. The big question, how much? $1900. Deal. It appears it came up by rail from a Feilding farm to Barry Phillips at Drury (South Auckland.) He sold it to Reg Nash out West Auckland. He stripped it down and promptly went bust. Somehow Dennis ended up with it. Now it’s time to pick it all up and bring it back home to Northcote. A band of merry men including Kevin, Phillip and I proceeded to recover the old cab complete with fuel tank. Sure enough 30 bales of hay and there it was. Cabs too far gone to use, but the rest looks okay. Load it up on the truck and go get the rest. Closer examination revealed that under the cow manure and mud, the rims and tyres were stuffed and all rusted together. Okay so it should all hold together if we tow the chassis home. Rope some planks across the frame, rope a transit seat onto that. Place all the guards etc. on Phillip’s truck and we towed the bugger along the major roads towards Auckland. Perched up on the seat clinging onto the wobbly steering wheel I was being pelted with manure, mud and rust. At major intersections hand signals were the order of the day. Boy, did we get some looks. Any Cops looking at this mob would turn their heads the other way. Too hard basket, besides, I know most of them anyway. Looking back, it was a bit naughty.

We stopped for a breather prior to turning into our street. “Kevin if I run out of something to say, you have to back me up.” He said, “that’s not likely to happen.” Up the driveway Jill and the mother-in-law are waiting. Good god all that junk and millions of spiders. Thankful that the wheels held together we proceeded upstairs. Jill come and give me a kiss, you’re now the proud owner of a 1929 Model AA Ford truck. Jill pulls a face and the mother-in-law moves in with, “What do you want an old thing like that for?” “It just so happens I like old things,” looking her straight in the eye. Anyway 1929 was a very important year as you know. God knows what she’s going to say. Then after thinking about it out comes her answer, “why that’s the year I got married.” “That’s it,” said I. That woman followed the restoration with avid interest. Sorry she passed away before it was completed. The solid steel centres were removed from the rusty rims. The old 1950 Crosscutter Ford had the same rims so I purchased one, sold it again, as long as I could flog the wheels off it. 126 hot rivets later we had nice safe solid wheels. The chassis was amazing. It was obvious she had not done a lot of hard work. The original rear spring shackles showed next to no wear. The lock tabs had never been opened out. The holes in the chassis indicated that it must have had a little giant hoist fitted in the past. These were very rare and took 2 years to find one. Cost an arm and a leg. Jill said it looked like a pile of junk and how would it get up the hills with all that extra weight. The word “piece of cake” was used again to smooth the waters. It was overhauled and works fine. As stated, the cab was rotted away in the normal places. As a matter of interest, the American all steel cabs imported into N.Z. were very expensive and rusted out in no time. The popular option was to import the chassis and fuel tank, plus running gear from Canada. A lot less tax involved. The local body builder or farmer brown built the wood cabs and tray. If you required a tip facility you cut out the last section of chassis and mounted your hinges. There was an option of single or dual wheels 1 ½ ton payload. The wood cab is similar to the original. It’s a bit cramped for today’s larger people. The seat is very comfortable with the back almost upright. Some comments we have received include, that can’t be leather on that seat. I say, “why not.” The tray had to be built from scratch. We both liked the look of the stake bed. A lot of kauri used in this restoration. Every nut and bolt removed. It was a 4 Year project to complete. I did not like the thought of removing the original crown wheel and pinion, however it was far too low at 6.6 to 1. Installed an Austin crown wheel and pinion, upgraded it to 4.5 to 1.

Jill chose the colour scheme, beige and green and along with the brass polished we think she has the Grandma Duck look. The very large windscreen provides good vision and the fold down side curtains keep the cold out. Easter of 1989 saw us off to Blenheim for the Model A Nationals. The kids rode on the back enclosed in a waterproof covered wagon canopy. That was a great trip. Years later Jill and I went down to Nelson, up over the hills to Golden Bay, slept on the back on a blow-up bed. Spent a night in a clothing optional camp, didn’t see the sign until the next day. Over the years it has been involved in several Farmers’ parades with Wal & Dog, Bananas in Pajamas, Whitbred parade and adds for beer products, heaps of Santa Clauses and weddings. When my mum passed away she was placed on the back with a non-skid mat and driven across Papatoetoe to the service. She had very fond memories of riding in this old truck. It seems that the same type of vehicles often owned by the local farmers would turn up with several hay bales on the back and pick up the young ones and take them to and from the local dance halls. An insight into their past, reveals they were used by farmers, general carriers, night carts and log trucks. “Yes, log trucks.” I have a picture that shows a 7ton kauri log super imposed on the rear and a wood wheel jinker trailer behind. Have to use your gears mate or you’re dead. They carried four cars at a time on semitrailers interstate America. Having the optional planetary box gives us 6 forward gears and 2 reverse speeds. This old girl turns heads. The kids love it and one only ever gets positive feedback which in this day and age is in short supply. However, on the down side you have to be aware that Al Capone used this same model of truck to haul away his ill-gotten gains, namely whisky. John Boy from Waltons Mountain was injured by one of the seat springs. Seems they only used coal sacks to cover them. The end result is a unique vehicle that drives very well and when you consider the weight of the entire truck the Model A motor provides enough power to enjoy very pleasant motoring.
