CHAIRMAN’S REPORT//

CLUB CAPTAIN//

By Ian Elmsly

By Esther Smith

It feels like only yesterday that the AGM was held and through a slight of hand I found myself in the Chair! Followed equally quickly by the July meeting before fleeing the country for a six week holiday! I now ask “what holiday?” as it seems time has raced since our return. So now back into reality in terms of the Vintage Car Club, with the meetings and runs, maintaining cars, washing cars, organising things ( or trying) oh, and going to work! Bugger, but that is life. By the time this MAG has arrived in your inbox or letterbox, some of the issues of the month will have been solved, or life as we know changed and we can try and get on with normal things. With spring now here, and let’s hope we have some good settled weather and the chance to enjoy our old cars and visit places of interest. We started ok, with an interesting guest speaker in Marcus Hayes-Jones from the Napier Civil Defence unit and I’m sure we all learned a few things. Make sure you all have your get away bags and enough emergency supplies and particularly medication, just in case. A very informative night and many thanks to Marcus for giving up his time. Speaking of our meeting, we had the grand total of 37 members present! Roughly 10% of our membership. We better hope that the numbers start to pick up for both meetings and the Club Runs. Sunday the 18th proved to be yet another success at the hands of Barrie & Lyndsay Browne with 17 Cars and 36 members enjoying a great day. Starting at Humber St, travelling off to the morning tea stop, before the next leg to Ball’s clearing for October 2017

lunch. For those able bodied members the cricket challenge between the Chairman & Club Captain was great fun (not overly competitive –yeah right) but a trip back to our youth (still have the same hand eye coordination problems!) but good clean fun. To those who were in each team, I’m afraid to say don’t wait to be selected for higher honours with the bat & ball! Well done to the Browne’s and now the challenge is really there for futures runs. Coming up on Sunday 1st Oct we are having a Spring Cleaning Day at the club rooms starting at 10am so if you get this MAG in time, make sure you trundle along as many hands make light work. For those present at the meeting, you will recall I mentioned Art Deco 2018 and that registrations are now available on our WEB site, so if you are wanting to enter please move very quickly. Spots are selling rapidly, particularly for the Parade. Also note that the Rally has been moved to the Friday to allow more time for relaxed socialising on the Saturday. WE require the usual raft of volunteers so don’t be shy, you can all help so please call Steve Donovan for the Friday, Esther Smith for the Saturday and Malcolm Blair for the Sunday. We need a main man/ woman to coordinate for the Car Rides on Saturday/ Sunday so please give me call with your kind offer. So now that’s it, my first Chairman’s report. Hope you enjoy the blurb, the messages and the humour.

Yeah Ian’s back and fortunately he bought Kay back too, so now I can give back both the Chairman’s and Mag editor’s hats. We got a bit out of synch in August by delaying our monthly club run until the National VCC Day, which was held on Sunday the 27th, this was where we were aligning ourselves with the cancer Society and their National Daffodil day appeal. Malcolm and Lesley Blair took on organising this event at fairly short notice. They did a great job of bringing it all together, several other car clubs were asked to join in, so we had the Hot rod Club. The Model A Club, The British and European Car Club who all gave us great support on the day, this meant we ended up with 87 cars on the run. The entry fee was $10 per car, so with that money plus donations from others who were unable to attend, we were able to make a donation of over $1000.00 to the Cancer Society, so thank you to the organisers for a job well done and to all of you who supported the day. This National VCC Day will now be an annual event, I know not all the VCC branches around the country had a run organised, but it is such a great idea that I am sure that the whole event will only get bigger and better. In September we had Marcus Hayes-Jones from Napier Civil Defence as our guest speaker, and very interesting it was too, can you name the top 5 hazards that CD are most concerned about. Well here they are in no particular order, Volcano, Earthquake, Human Pandemic, Flooding and Tsunami, we have had a couple of those events in Hawke’s Bay within the past year which goes to show that we need to be aware and prepared. COMING EVENTS: Our upcoming events for October: • Club rooms Working Bee- Sunday 1st Oct 10am • Midweek run Wednesday 4th October • Club night 2nd Wednesday the 11th Oct

• Club Run of Sunday the 15th October (refer elsewhere in the Mag for Details) • Safari-20.23rd October. FUTURE EVENTS ARE: • Homestead Run in mid November • Children’s Christmas Party Saturday 2nd of December • Christmas Picnic Run Sunday 17th December Art Deco planning is well underway, so lots of volunteers are needed to assist. Each element of the weekend has a different person as the organiser. Friday night is Steve Donavan, Saturday Morning is Esther Smith, Car Rides Sat and Sun afternoon is Ian Elmsly and Sunday morning is Malcolm Blair Please let the various events organisers know that you are available. I would just like to note the passing of Ces Bishop who had been a long time member of the branch. I can clearly remember seeing him out on club runs in his 1930’s Lagonda and also displaying the veteran Rover delivery van that he had restored. Last Sunday we had a great run to Bulls clearing, with 17 cars present, this was a real country run taking us up through the Dartmoor Valley and onto Puketitiri Road. A cricket match was duly held between the Club captains and the Chairman’s teams. Talk about leading from behind, the Chairman wasn’t to be seen yet his team still won, maybe his absence was the reason they won. It was interesting looking at the age of the cars we now enjoy driving, I can clearly remember seems like just yesterday, that when we used to take our 1960 Humber Super Snipe on a run it was viewed as a modern that didn’t quite fit the bill, however on Sunday it was definitely in the mid age range. Anyway thanks to Barrie and Lyndsay Browne for organising a most enjoyable day out. 7

A COUNTRY LOOP//

UP AND COMING CLUB EVENTS//

By Lesley & Malcolm Blair

SUNDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER The morning started warm so we headed off to pick up our two passengers (Kevin & Kaye) and proceeded down to Humber Street where we were meeting up with the other club members. At about 10am we headed off and by this time the weather had taken a change and was a lot cooler. Our back seat passengers who were dressed in shorts and lighter clothing decided they needed something warm to wear, so did a detour back to their house. We carried on with the run which went up Puketitiri Road then into Apley Road ending up at Dartmoor Reserve where we put up our tables and chairs and had morning tea. Barrie & Lyndsay who organised the run gave us our 2nd sheet of driving instructions.

From our morning tea stop beside the river we crossed the bridge and processed to Balls Clearing at Puketitiri. We travelled along some dusty back country roads, admiring the lovely views, lambs and calves. Arrived at Balls Clearing and set up for a Picnic Lunch. After lunch there was a nice bush walk where you could see all the different native trees and spot the wild life. A game of cricket was organised between the Club Captain and the Chairman and their teams. There was some great hand/eye coordination on display with the Chairman’s team being triumphant. There was a great deal of friendly rivalry and very flexible rules but lots of fun!!

NATIONAL DAFFODIL RALLY AUGUST// It was a crisp late winters day on Sunday 27 August, with spring definitely in the air, when 87 vehicles of many makes, models and eras gathered at the club rooms. Vintage, Hot Rod, American Muscle cars, classics and moderns – some sporting the charity and seasons yellow – nice touch! A great rumble through Napier city, then out to the countryside with a few ‘yellow’ questions to keep us alert along the way. The mustard flowers should have provoked memories as both parents and grandparents used to grow and dig in these for soil condition – alas this memory didn’t appear until later and the 1st prize went to Peter Wills/Modern Vehicle. 2nd Prize Tony Diskin /Mustang. 3rd prize Graham & Rebecca Dockary/MK 2 Zephyr.

WEDNESDAY RUN// By Wendy

Two Boobie prizes went to Larry Dellimore & Bob Gordon. Well Done! A large number filled the colourful clubrooms for a social cuppa and catch-up among the daffodils and balloons, with the real winner of the day being the Cancer Society with over $1,000 raised from our local run and it was pleasing to know that events like this were happening nationwide for this worthy cause. Thanks to everyone involved; the organisers Malcolm & Lesley Blair, the prize sponsors, our Club Captain etc, for a great afternoon in our beautiful region. Helen & Steve Gray

Eight cars set off from the club rooms. Leader to meet us at the 'Stop' (frightened his little car would not make it all the way). Here we go again. Been this route before (not many to choose from). At least it's a nice sunny day. Turn here, turn there - Swamp Road, Ohiti Road, steady pace easy drive. Oh! Oh! Delayed. The backsides wobbled before us. The Moris 8 revved. The flock fled. But to no avail would they let us pass. Finally Matapiro Road. Could now make headway. Through the smoke would we find our smiling leader? Would he have waited for us? Now off the beaten track. Others waiting there. Nine cars now at the top. The children came out to play. Tyres rolling down the hill. Who can be near the edge? Who can be near the target? Dick got near, but Margaret hit it. Drive now to the bottom of the hill. No! We didn't have to roll those tyres back. Settled for lunch in the sheltered glen. Some picked daffodils. All went home. Thanks again to our mighty leaders. Derek of course and Bob and Trixie.

Ana @ Hooters

Hi Folks, Well spring has certainly begun and that lovely Hawke’s Bay sunshine is back! We are back in full swing with the new season with ‘Monte’ the vintage Bus doing two tours daily again. The team are mostly back, so we are full steam ahead with convoys, conferences and our first cruise ship of the season is less than a month away. Where did the winter go? As most of you know, David has been overseas and is due to head back next month just in time for the start of the ‘silly season’ as we call it. By the sounds of it he has been having a fantastic time going to lots of car events and most notably Goodwood, so we are looking forward to hearing all his tales on his return.

As always we are still looking for more drivers to join the team and we are also looking for a mechanic to come along and join the crew. Both positions are ideally part time but we would certainly look at taking on a full time mechanic if the right person came along so please do spread the word. We are looking forward to seeing you all out and about at the various events for this season and you can of course always drop by and see the team at the Hooters showroom, we are always happy to chat cars and do love it when we get some interesting cars calling round for a visit. Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

We have been busy in his absence and have added a couple of new additions for this season. A beautiful 1936 Chevrolet, in tan and cream, purchased from just up the road in Taupo. Some of you may have already seen this little beauty as she has attended Art Deco weekend a few times. Beautifully restored by a father and son duo. The other new addition may turn heads and divide opinions as we have also got ourselves a 1935 ‘yellow cab’ Chevrolet. That’s right a real bright New York style taxi that even has the number plate 35Taxi, a great find from Auckland. I’m sure she’ll enjoy leaving the big smoke and tootling around the lovely streets of Napier in the sunshine. Pics on right.
