Notes from the Chair Hello Everyone, We have held yet another successful swap meet. A huge thanks to everyone who helped and a special thanks to Trevor and Sandy Hardy, Alistair Howard and Derek Haycock for all of their work. At Club Night we looked at the two proposals (a nationwide flat joining fee; and the future of international rallies) which David Yorke presented to the National AGM . Those present discussed these ideas. For November Club Night Stan Garmonsway will talk to us about his visit to the Morgan factory including some history of the Morgan. There will be a Morgan at the Clubrooms for us to admire. We have a Working Bee at the clubrooms on 4 November 8.00am to 12.00 noon and the plan is to do some exterior painting if the weather is suitable, replace one board of the decking, put up short piece of spouting, fill holes in the drive and trim back unwanted scrub on the bank. We will need trailers to take away green waste please. Also on 4 November the Manawatu Show is being held at Manfeild. We have been invited to display cars. This is for one day only 9.00am to 5.00pm. We have 6 cars already but need a couple more. If you are able to help, please get in touch with Bill Turner phone 06 328 7867

On 10 December the Feilding Christmas Parade and Carnival is being held. The parade starts at 2.00pm . Vehicles need to be at Kowhai Park at 1.00pm. Entry is via Rata St. We have supported this event for years. Please let me know if you can bring your car this year. On 13 December we have our Christmas Party at the clubrooms. There will be a catered meal at a subsidised cost of $25.00 per head. Creative Catering have put together a delicious menu for us. Please let me know if you are coming. Please pay when you register your intention to attend. (If paying by internet I will give you our account number when you register.) I have not had any response to this request for numbers in the last Tourer. If I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get any response by the end of November we will cancel the event. Bryan Abraham continues to plan and execute interesting runs which are increasing in popularity. We have had an email request for wedding cars for 25 November. If you are able to help, please contact me. We have managed to clear a blockage in the outlet pipe which drains the large grassed area. Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.

Burma Rally - 21st January 2018 The Burma Rally will take place over Wellington Anniversary weekend and Wanganui’s popular Vintage Weekend. VCC members and Burma Rally vehicles play an important part in the weekend. This will be acknowledged by Mainstreet Whanganui at the inaugural Vintage Weekend Launch Do. All VCC members are invited to this exclusive event. The rally programme also allows you time to enjoy other Vintage Weekend activities.

PROGRAMME Friday 19th January: 5:30-8:30pm Frank Bar, Victoria Ave. Dress up, display your vehicle, mix, mingle and celebrate the launch of Whanganui Vintage Weekend 2018. Full bar and menu available at own cost $10 per ticket.

Saturday 20th January: 8:30am Rivercity Market opens on the Riverbank. Vintage Weekend activities continue throughout the day. 12:00-4:00pm Victoria Avenue, park in especially designated areas for display. Follow instructions from the marshals. 8:45am Briefing, all drivers and navigators must attend. 9:00am First vehicles away, starting times as indicated on your rally pack. At the finish of the rally park in especially designated areas and display vehicles. Collect pre ordered lunch or enjoy your own picnic lunch. 1:00pm onward Watch Paddle Wars from the riverbank, (man power vs steam power), a variety of water craft racing from historical Dublin St Bridge to the Waimarie Riverboat Centre. Enjoy afternoon festivities on the riverside, bands, food stalls, buskers and more… 6:00pm Pre dinner drinks at the Laird Park Bowling Club (entrance from Blind Foundation and Netball Courts carpark off Peat St) 6:30pm Dinner and Prize Giving We encourage period costume to be worn at any time during the rally and to Vintage Weekend activities, however it is not essential. This rally is open to vehicles as defined in the rules of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) Eligible entrants must be current financial members of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.), or overseas residents who are members of a recognised Antique Motoring Club. The entrant must either be the driver/ rider, navigator or passenger of the vehicle entered. Invited guests are deemed Non Competitive and should not interfere with the competitive section of the rally. All vehicles must display current Vehicle Identity Certificate OR Statement of Authenticity. The ABC of the Manawatu VCC Q is for …what?

The Editor could not find any cars in our Branch whose name began with Q. Reluctantly she rejected the offer for one members’ car called Cutie . That set me wondering. How many Q cars are there? I turned to my 1536 page “Standard Catalogue of American Cars 1805 to 1942” (from which the following quotation is also taken). It devotes two pages to cars whose names commence with Q; the entry for Z also takes up two pages. But Z has 11 entries whereas there are only nine for Q. So Qs are rarer than Zs. These “Q cars” cover a narrow period, with eight between 1899 and 1906 and, in 1911, the Queen City Electric Automobile Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which did not manufacture a single vehicle! Similarly, the Quaker City Automobile Company 1900-1904 was not a manufacturer but became the largest dealership in Philadelphia, selling the vehicles of Oldsmobile, Pope-Toledo, Franklin and White. In 1900 a White was sold to John W Cassidy president of the Egg-O-See Cereal Company of Quincy, Illinois. In 1904 he bought the dealership and in 1906 had a large touring car built for himself. This 1906 Quincy was the only one built; the ultimate status symbol: a bespoke car. The Quakertown Buggy Works first produced a gasoline car in 1902 and is believed to have achieved a modest production , ending in 1904. No more details are available. The Queen 1904-1906 was built by the C H Blomstrom Motor Company of Detroit but the company was “defectively incorporated” and CHB dodged the consequence by merging with Car De Luxe, and promptly using the proceeds to start another company named after himself. The first Queen had a single pot engine, 5.5 by 6 inch, which achieved 8hp. There was also a horizontally opposed two pot 12hp engine. In 1905 a four cylinder 24hp was added 1905 at double the price for a two and the single cylinder car dropped. By 1906 when production ceased a total of 1500 units are estimated to have been built. The Queen appears to have been the most successful of the Q cars. The Tourer

“The only thing fast about the Quick was its run to obscurity.” H M Quick first produced bicycles and with partners developed an engine and a steering device. In December 1899 it was reported that after two years of trials and disappointments the company announced that it had commenced production of one car per day. This was a two seater buggy with tiller and single chain drive powered by a two cylinder water cooled engine which developed 4hp at 700 rpm. The factory in Paterson, New Jersey was shifted three times and, burdened by debt, the company was sold in autumn 1900 to Remington in a deal that was later declared fraudulent. J M Quinby and Company of Newark, New Jersey, was founded in 1834 as a carriage building firm and achieved a reputation for excellence. It had a brief foray in building automobiles commencing in 1899. Electric vehicles were custom built to order and many were exported. Shortly after the turn of the century this was abandoned and the firm turned to coachbuilding for the auto industry, becoming recognised as a leading maker in the east of the USA. In 1916 there was a rumour it was to build complete cars but nothing eventuated. It is not known with certainty whether a Quinlan automobile was ever built. Michael Quinlan had been making carriages before the turn of the century and he expanded into automobile repair and painting in addition to bodybuilding. While he may have built a car in 1904 he never became a manufacturer despite the business continuing in Brookline Massachusetts into the 1920’s. To me the mystery is how the Quinlan qualified for listing in the catalogue. The history of the Quinsler is without question. It was also made in Massachusetts, but in Boston. In November 1899 the firm of Quinsler and Company announced it had completed 20 hansom cab bodies for the Electric Vehicle Company, maker of the Columbia. The carriage business remained the main Quinsler trade, however. In 1904 only, Quinsler marketed a complete vehicle, a runabout with rumbleseat, powered by a single pot 7hp De Dion. It had a $950 price tag.

Club Captain’s Corner SUNDAY RUN TO THE WOOLSHED – 24 September 2017 Although the weather was overcast and drizzly, once the drive out through Rongotea Road, Leen Road, Kaimatarau Road, through Rongotea, Campion Road and Tangimoana Road to the Woolshed Café was behind the group, twenty two people headed indoors into the Woolshed Café to enjoy afternoon tea in the side room which staff had put aside for our group. As usual the café staff attended to our tables efficiently and in no time at all we were immersed in chatter, tea, coffee, and good food. Thanks to those who supported the outing. Bryan and Catherine Abraham MID MONTH MEANDER TO HANSENS CAFÉ AND STORE – 13 October 2017 The route from the Railway Station carpark in Matthews Avenue to Kimbolton was fairly direct – out through Bunnythorpe, Colyton, and 15 miles on Kimbolton Road (through Cheltenham and Kiwitea) to Hansens Café and Store in Kimbolton for lunch.

Seventeen people were grouped at two tables and enjoyed a two hour lunch before heading home. The menu had been revised since our May visit with some new dishes on offer. Like last time, the café handled the meal orders from the group well and the food was excellent. Thank you to all who came to support this mid-week run. Bryan and Catherine Abraham SUNDAY RUN - 26 November 2017 Meet at 1.00 pm at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Ave, Palm North for a 40 mile (65 km) drive to a café. There is an 8 km section of Highway driving (SH57) on this run (and the same again if you return to Palmerston North by the same route), so feel free to bring your modern if you would prefer to do so. MID MONTH MEANDER – 10 December 2017 The last Mid-Month Meander for the year is on Sunday 10 December and is an approx. 25 mile (40 km) run to ‘Flowers with Flair’ in Colyton. Meet at 1.00 pm at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Avenue (Palm Nth). ‘Flowers with Flair’ is a small business run by Julie O’Connor who uses imported silk flowers to create flower arrangements for Special Occasions ; Memorials and Gravesides ; Home & Office Décor ; Wedding Flowers ; Horseshoes & Garters ; Christmas Arrangements etc. While you may have seen Julies’ stall at a local market, Fete, or Expo, this run will let you look at the Floral Studio at her home and give you the opportunity to talk to her about her business and the goods that she makes and sells. The visit will probably only take half an hour so there will be time to take a 12 km run afterwards to the Herb Farm (or an 18 km to County Fayre in Pohangina) - for a tea or coffee.

Some weekend Touring By John Callesen I’m currently sitting with the Cadillac at Cobblestone Museum fete in Greytown Saturday of Labour weekend. They were wanting 100-year-old cars for their public day so the Hardacre’s in the ’15 Dodger Roadster and us in the ’18 Cadillac came down. Lots of families here educating their children in the ways of old. It is well done with many activities for the kids. Old style photography of children is popular. Am looking forward to the pie competition finishing! We are staying with our friends the Kennedy’s in Martinborough. Life has its twists as they have moved back to NZ from the UK and brought their 1922 RR silver Ghost with them which is the car we drove for 3300 kms on the Alpine tour around Europe in 2013. Seemed surreal to see it parked at our front door last weekend when they joined us in the ’29 Dodge Landau along with Alan and Suzanne in the ’15 DB to head to Taumarunui for King Country’s annual rally ‘Journey through Time’. Last year the theme was ‘The Blue Duck’ which we were disappointed to miss as we were too busy restoring the ’15 Roadster. This time the theme was ‘Mountain Views’. We assembled at the King County clubrooms on the outskirts of Taumaranui. 42 entries was impressive but this rally has been running for 23 years so is well known. Cars came from as far afield as Dargaville and Martinborough including Auckland, BOP, Eastern BOP, Waikato, Taranaki, Taupo, with 3 from Manawatu. Interestingly 44% were in the P60 era, ’61 – ’80 class. For those who have been in our branch for over 40 years like us on the rally were Mark and Karen Spackman from Eastern BOP in their ’65 Rambler Marlin. They still have their Hudson which we remember. Rain in the morning precluded mountain views but by midday when we parked up for lunch at the National Park School Hall. It was a beautiful clear blue-sky day with the mountains giving us magnificent views clad in snow. We had toured through small villages off the highway. The afternoon were choices of different routes to take in the Chateau, or Whakapapa Village or drive on back country roads to Taumarunui.

Dinner at the Cossy club where Hardacre’s picked up runner up in the veteran/ vintage class. (6 entries). In all reality everyone got something as the sponsors table was full of items. Headed back home on Sunday. North of Taihape we went across to the TaihapeNapier road then dropped south East to head to Pukeokahu, a solid half hours’ drive East of Taihape to #2 daughter, Jennie’s farm. Last Xmas I took the Cadi there to drive Father Xmas to the local Xmas function at the school which has 7 pupils. Lunch and then we drove the gravel road south down to Utiku. This is a relaxed event run with straight forward instructions and is of approximately 4 hours duration. We will cover sealed and some unsealed roads. A full tank of fuel is advised for a very scenic country drive. Entrants wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t require a cut lunch this year, a planned stop at a CafĂŠ will relieve you of the chore.
