VCC ID CARDS RENEWAL APPLICATIONS Message from Head Office NZVCC
Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.

Notes from the Chair Hello Everyone, Bryan Abraham plotted and ran a fantastic vintage rally. Unfortunately the weather was not the best. Congratulations to the winner Allan Hardacre, second place getter, Bob Pettigrew and third place getter Goff Bryant. The branch wishes to officially welcome Stan Garmonsway who has transferred from the Wellington Branch. The Manawatu Brach offers its sincere condolences to Linda Williams upon the recent loss of her mother and also to Jack Olynsma upon the recent loss of his brother. Our thoughts are with you both and your families. We are still in need of helpers for the swap meet on 14 October. Please get in touch with Trevor Hardy urgently if you can help on the gate. I have put Ian and myself down for two shifts each but would prefer if others could do one of these shifts. Each slot is an hour and a half. Thank you to those who have already put their names forward. There will be a working bee at the clubrooms on 4 November 8.00am
– 12 noon to tidy up the gardens and do some painting, fill pot holes and clear out the bunkhouse. Unfortunately we experienced technical difficulties at club night but eventually watched part of the Goodward Revival video brought along by Stan Garmonsway, and were entertained with stories of Vern Jensen’s recent trip to Europe. Next month we will talk about two issues raised at the national AGM – international rallies and membership fees. The speaker for November is yet to be confirmed. On 13 December we will have our Christmas Party. The club will partially subsidise this and the cost to members will be $25.00 per head for a catered three course meal. On 12 November the Manawatu Classic Motorcycle Club will hold a swap meet at the Grove. Happy Motoring Sarah

The ABC of the Manawatu VCC P is for 1935 Pontiac Coupe By Dian and David Buchanan
The first memory we have about the Pontiac is when we were renovating our home in 1987. David was talking to Dave Gifkins, a car enthusiast who was working here at the time and he mentioned a Pontiac he had heard of which was being completely rebuilt by Ross Lane of Blenheim. Ross sent us photos of when he bought it and it was just boxes of parts. After it was completed we had a couple of trips to Blenheim to see the finished product and David just had to have it. About 1991 we joined the Manawatu Vintage Car Club and our first rally was the Pan Pacific Rally, held in Palmerston North and had a fantastic time. We have had a holiday trip around the South Island, rallies in Taupo, Hamilton, Invercargill and many, many local rallies, night trials, brass monkey night trials and the car came through with flying colours. A memory of a brass monkey rally had us high in the hills behind Eketahuna at 1o’clock in the morning, thick fog, dim lights, narrow metal roads and everybody lost. Those were the days!! A few years ago we decided to take the Pontiac on a Ruahine Ramble which took us over to Pahiatua and driving

through Mangamaire the fan came off the water pump shaft and then went through the radiator so sadly we had to be towed home that day. A new radiator had to be rebuilt in Auckland because the water flow went crossways. A very expensive trip that was! In February 2012 PONTY was the bridal car for our grandson’s wedding which was held in our garden and she really looked the part. With age creeping upon us David found that it was too hard to steer all day. These days PONTY has been retired although we do take her out on New Year’s Day picnic for the annual run around Bulls which we still enjoy. Note from Editor According to my Standard Catalogue of American Cars 1805-1942, while the first Pontiac came out of the Oakland factory in 1926 it had its genesis in the early twenties. GM headquarters had the idea of a Chevrolet chassis with a six cylinder engine and it was sent to Chevrolet for final development but production was entrusted to the Oakland Motor Company because its sales were flagging. The car dominated the field of low priced sixes and set a sales record in its first year. While other solutions were considered, the impact of the Great Depression was that the Oakland was killed off in 1932 and the factory changed its name to Pontiac Motor Company. It remained a successful car and was a noted muscle car following World War 2.

Annual Vintage Rally On Saturday 16 September it was pretty obvious when dawn broke that the weather was going to be a mixed bag for the day of the Manawatu Vintage Rally. By the time Lynda and I arrived at the club rooms, with our two little grand-daughters, we had already driven though a heavy downpour and sunshine, and so the day continued. Cars leaving The Grove at start of rally:

After a quick cuppa, Rally organiser Bryan explained the rally route and rally pack details to the 22 entrants. It was good to see a couple of outside entrants, Murray and Penny Firth from Auckland in their 1931 Bedford, and Norman Willis and navigator Cristina Van Dam from Wellington in their 1925 Fiat. With two extra pairs of eyes in our car we hoped we could easily find all 30 of the photographic clues and be in contention for a prize, but little did we know we were much mistaken. One of the pairs of eyes almost went to sleep at about 50 miles into the morning run and the other was more interested in spotting animals. The rally route was almost 80 miles long and took in scenery around Bunnythorpe, Coylton, Feilding and Halcombe districts before ending up at the Pohangina Hall for lunch. Just as well Bryan had booked the Hall for lunch as it rained again during this stop. In the morning run we missed a couple of turns and had to back pedal only to see other entrants making the same mistake but not turning around. This we found to be confusing. Little did we know that there were A & B routes with subtle differences. Nice one Bryan!! After an enjoyable lunch, prize giving took place. 1st prize went to Allan & Suzanne Hardacre – they got 19 out of the 30 photographic clues. Whilst Suzanne was navigator and did the rally in the front passenger seat, Allan did take three of his students on the rally and one of them came up with him as navigator (suspect he had four navigators).
The Tourer
25
2nd prize went to Bob & Isabelle Pettigrew – they also got 19 out of 30, but a tie breaker ‘quiz sheet’ put Allan ahead. The quiz sheet was a page of 42 car logo/emblems and they were given just two or three minutes to name as many car makes as they could from the logos. 3rd prize went to Goff Bryant and his daughter Angela Cameron (who was his navigator) with 18 photographic clues correctly identified.
1st.
2nd.
The afternoon run had a few options to choose from including a short run on metal roads. Bryan was unsure as to exact numbers, as he was the ‘tail’ car, so he just tried to count the wheel tracks in the mud, Five or six cars took the unsealed road option in the afternoon which took them around Creamery Road, Ridge Road, Pollock Road, Finnis Road etc. and 3rd. which seemed to be enjoyed with the drivers grinning from ear to ear as they got back to Pohangina. Bryan had no idea how many did the sealed route afternoon option, but Dave Williams did the tail end Charlie thing and said he didn’t catch up with anyone so I guess only a small number took that option. From what I can gather approximately a dozen people – which would have been half a dozen cars or thereabouts -- went to Luttrells Pioneer Museum in Pohangina. A couple of groups just went and waited outside for the County Fayre Café to open at 2pm. Bryan was not aware of anyone doing the wetlands option – feedback was that it was too wet! (there were more squally showers in the afternoon) and a small number just headed away home after the lunch stop. Following the afternoon option everyone met back at County Fayre Café where tea, coffee and Devonshire scones were enjoyed around much conversation. A good day had by all. Bill Williams
