VCC ID CARDS RENEWAL APPLICATIONS Message from Head Office NZVCC

Please note that all VCC ID Cards have an expiry. This expiry is upon change of ownership, or 10 years from the issue date. Your vehicle must also be as described on the Card. A Renewal form personalised for each vehicle ID Card is distributed by the National Office to current financial members, approximately 3 months before the expiration. Even if your vehicle has had no changes, this form must be checked, signed and forwarded to your Branch, along with the ID Card (if the photo correctly shows your vehicle in its present state), or three new photos, as stated on the form. Upon receipt at the National Office, the ID Card will be reissued and will be valid for a further 10 years unless there is a change of ownership or major changes to the vehicle during that time. It is compulsory for all National and International VCC Rallies that vehicles entered must have a current valid ID Card.

Notes from the Chair Greetings everyone. August club night comprised of a meal and get together with Central Hawkes Bay Branch at Dannevirke. This was followed by a fantastic presentation by John Singer, a policeman who had spent a year as sole police officer on Pitcairn Island. His job covered everything from stamping visas to child protection. The presentation covered a brief history of the island, an introduction to the people, and videos of events attended including dramatic events in boats. Thank you to Central Hawkes Bay for organising this event. September Club night is a presentation about the Morgan factory by Stan Garmonsway. Please come along and hear this entertaining speaker. I will talk about the recent national VCC AGM and Executive

Meeting which Ian and I attended. Please see reports from both of these meetings elsewhere in this Tourer. The swapmeet is almost upon us. Please let Trevor Hardy know when you can help on the gate. We also need volunteers to clean up afterwards. Please contact Trevor if you can do this. Everyone is welcome to take part in the Vintage Rally on the 16th of September. Please come along in your modern if your VCC eligible car is not on the road. Sarah Howell

New York’s fire chief has just pranged his new Chevrolet Royal Mail roadster, much to the amusement of the locals.

VINTAGE RALLY - 16 September 2017 The Manawatu Branch VCC clubrooms will be open from 8.45 am to allow you and your crew to meet other rally participants and indulge in a hot drink and a biscuit or two before the 9.15 am briefing. As has been the case in recent years, the Vintage Rally will again be open to vehicles from VCC classification groups other than ‘Vintage’ - however vehicles from other classifications will be ‘non-competitive’ entries. Members who have only a veteran classification vehicle, or whose ‘vintage’ is currently off the road are more than welcome to participate in their ‘modern’ as a non-competitive entry if they wish. The morning section of the rally is approx. 75 miles (120 Kms) and is competitive for those who like a challenge – otherwise just follow the instructions and enjoy the scenery. The afternoon section is approx. 30 miles (45 Kms) and concludes at a nearby café. From the café there is approx. 15 miles (25 kms) of sealed road to return to Palmerston North. As with last year’s Vintage Rally, the route remains on the western side of the ranges so roads are relatively flat. There is only approx. ¾ mile (1.2 kms) of unsealed road on this rally. Bring your own picnic lunch, hot water, chairs etc., to help you settle in for an enjoyable lunch stop. If the weather is against us there is shelter at the destination. Entry Form Options : •

complete the form that is in this Tourer and mail it to the address on the form.

if you would like the form emailed to you to prevent you from having to cut into your Tourer, email the Rally Organiser ( bryana@xtra.co.nz ) requesting that a PDF version be emailed to you.

alternatively forget the form and just send an email to the Rally Organiser with all of the details that are requested on the form included in the email text.

Payment Options : • send a cheque in the post with your entry form ; •

pay on the day ; or

email the Rally Organiser ( bryana@xtra.co.nz ) requesting account details to enable you to pay by internet banking.

VCC Executive Meeting Blenheim 11 -12 August 2017 Matters arising from previous minutes: Membership form needs updating. Both Notices of Motion failed. Only 19% of members voted. Forty six Manawatu members voted which is 28% of our branch membership. The cost of postage of voting papers was discussed. One branch suggested having a box at the clubrooms for bulk mailing of voting envelopes. Correspondenceiuy: A letter requested clarification on when post 1980 vehicles are eligible to enter VCC events. It is one year after they become 30 years old, so a vehicle which was manufactured in 1986 becomes VCC eligible on the 1st of January 2017. There was a lot of discussion on this matter. The draft budget was approved. Changes to Club Bylaws: both of these were carried unanimously. A report was given on membership status. Calendar of Events: delegates were reminded to check for potential clashes with other branches. Matters pertaining to Health and Safety were reiterated. The meeting was reconvened after the AGM: 12 August 2017 Don Muller was re -appointed as archivist. Presentation: David Yorke “Membership Application Fees – A Discussion Paper” David had prepared graphs showing the different fees charged by each branch being the levy, in some cases a joining fee, and a charge for a membership badge. The overall cost varied quite widely across the country. In order to enable new members to join on line, David recommended a fee of $100.00 per year for the first year for all branches and advice to new members that in subsequent years the fee will be different. General Business: one branch suggested putting joining records onto computer. Julie showed delegates one very large handwritten book, of which there are The Tourer

many. She has photographed each page but it would be a mammoth task to digitalise these records.

A.G.M 12 August 2017

Reports were received from the Secretary / Treasurer, Club Captains, Beaded Wheels, Speed Steward, Archive, NZFOMOC, Registrar, 25 and 35 year badges, and Facebook page. The management committee was re-elected with the only change being a new North Island Club Captain. – Kaaren Smylie. Paul Collins was thanked for his work. The club has a new insurance broker. This insurance covers club assets such as buildings. If any member has a dispute with Vero the member must be willing to supply their name if the club is to act on their behalf. 2021 Rally: The Rally Director has resigned as he has not been able to get a team together. Presentation: David Yorke : “International Events: What does the future hold?” David presented data about three very successful national non-VCC events: Beach Hop, Americarna and Art Deco to show why these events are popular and to examine what VCC can learn from these events to attract more participation. Each of these events is held at the same venue each year and follows a set format. Participation is not restricted to any one club. Each event lasts no longer than five days. Discussion : Tony Haycock thought that 5 days should be maximum for the core event with extras added at each end for those who want a longer event. Roger White thought that the club should look at using Cutler Park and Mystery Creek for these events. A sub committee will be formed to look at the feasibility of future international rallies. General Business: The compiler of the VCC Facebook page needs more material. Short videos are good. 50 year badge nominations go to the management committee which needs a fair amount of time to check the validity. Next Executive Meeting will be held on the 24th of March at Wellington Airport Conference Centre. The management committee is looking at all branch constitutions. Tax

exemptions are to be included in Branch Constitutions. Julie has sample clauses. Revision of the Incorporated Societies Act seems to have gone to ground for political reasons. The delegate from South Canterbury Branch suggested making a TV programme about VCC eligible vehicles. Tony Haycock pointed out that producers of such programmes have to pay TV networks to get broadcast films produced and that if this idea went ahead that the club would need to find someone with expertise in the field. Waimate Branch enquired about the 400 members that we are losing nationally each year. Branches need to contact ex members to see why this is happening. It was pointed out that if a member resigns their insurance with Vero may automatically lapse. Twenty four branches are taking part in a Daffodil Day Rally. The John Goddard Trophy was awarded to the Beaded Wheels Committee.

Olive Tree Village are celebrating 25 years of being in business on 28 October 2017, from 2.00pm – 4.30pm. They would like some old cars for the residents to look at and maybe have a ride in around the complex. A special afternoon tea will be provided, and there will be other entertainment to keep you amused. Please phone Ron Persson if you are able to help – phone 354 5266

Club Captain’s Corner SUNDAY RUN TO THE HERB FARM AND CAFÉ – 30 July 2017 It was a pleasant run to the Herb Farm on a fine day for the nine cars that met outside Chesters in Tremaine Avenue. The nearly 40 mile route took the group out Rongotea Road to Green Road, onto Taipo Road, Fairfield Road, Penny Road, the Mt Stewart Halcombe Road,

Sandon Road, through Feilding onto SH54, then onto Colyton Road and Grove Road. Because the Café was busy that afternoon they had opened their conference room up for us with the tables set up in a ‘U’ shaped arrangement which made for a very comfortable afternoon tea stop for the 22 people who came on the run. MID MONTH MEANDER TO THE VINES CAFE – 9 August 2017 Eighteen people converged on the Vines Café on SH1 at Foxton after a pleasant drive along Lockwood Road, Main Drain Road, Himatangi Block Road, Motuiti Road, Hickford Road and Ridge Road to the Café. Unlike most runs this one was not uneventful – with one car needing to be parked up en-route and trailered home later because the gearbox wasn’t behaving as it was supposed to, one car having difficulty starting after lunch because the driver had a short term memory lapse and forgot to unset the ‘kill’ switch, and another needing some assistance with jumper leads to get mobile as the driver forgot to turn the headlights off when parking up before lunch.

But otherwise it was a very enjoyable outing and lunch which allowed a couple of hours of conversation in a spacious and comfortable café with good food, tea and coffee served up to the three tables that had been put aside for our group. Bryan and Catherine Abraham

SUNDAY RUN – 24 September 2017 Meet at 1.00 pm at the Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom carpark in Tremaine Avenue (Palmerston North) for a leisurely run on easy roads to a Café for afternoon tea and a chit-chat. The ABC of the Manawatu VCC O is for 1926 Oakland 54-C By Ian Rowden

In 1999 when Esmee had retired from managing the NZ Women’s Hockey team and was looking for a replacement activity I suggested a vintage car. We visited the Te Puke Autobarn in January 1999 and selected a good looking vintage tourer, a 1926 Oakland 54-C. We trucked it to Palmy and embarked on a steep learning curve. Fortunately Esmee knew Dot Martin and our friendship with the Martins has been the best feature of our vintage motoring. At our first meeting with Murray he lifted the bonnet and declared that it would need to be rewired. The car had presumably been sold in Auckland as it had been restored in Auckland in the 60s and again elsewhere in the 90s. The current registration papers commenced in the 90s. The body and interior were pretty good when we bought it but it was not mechanically sound. I played mechanic’s mate while Murray completed the restoration. It was rewired, an underseat tool chamber built and indicators, a tray and trunk, power cutoff switch and electric wiper added. The engine was a puzzle but it had a crack between two cylinders. With a replacement halfblock she was back on the road. Murray has continued providing all skilled maintenance required. Basil Shailer replaced carpets and The Tourer

19

added a tonneau for the rear which was the most useful feature we added. Oakland was formed in 1907 in Pontiac, Oakland County Michigan and in 1909 became part of GM. The 54 series went from 1924 (A) to 1927 (D). It had a new 3litre 6 cylinder L-head engine, four wheel brakes, centralized controls, and it introduced Duco paint. It was marketed as the “True Blue Oakland Six.” In 1926, Oakland also built the first Pontiac, “a quality six to sell at a four’s price.” This was an immediate success and the last Oakland was built in 1931 (with a new synchromesh with silent second.) In 1932 the name of the company was changed to Pontiac Motor Company. For some reason I immediately named her Betsy. It must have been ordained because I later learned that the (true blue) American patriot who sewed the first Stars and Stripes was named Betsy Ross. Betsy was a regular at Art Deco, with our friends Maureen and John Doolan leading us in dressing up, most recently as clowns.

20

The Tourer

She took us to the Invercargill International Rally in a tour group led by John and Judy Callesen , stumbling on Dot and Murray at Franz Josef. There was a lot of rain on the coast but no mishap. My worst breakdown was when I broke a half-shaft at Cheviot on the way back to PN and had her transported home. For years I had the problem of shearing of the valve on the right rear tyre. This was finally cured by injecting a sticky belt “additive.” A tyre supplier suggested that a larger tyre (by a different maker) might be needed. Old age caught up with me faster than Betsy and I became very sore after a few hours motoring. We sold her in 2016 to an Auckland group of VCC motor bikers. They are very pleased with her. She did the Far North Rally, won the last Easter Rally and travelled to and from Canterbury by coaster to do the last Irishman’s rally. We still have a 1935 Chrysler and a 1951 Sunbeam Talbot. Both are for sale!
