Where has the year gone? November was another busy month for me, starting with the Far North Tour, then numerous projects and visits to attend. I finally managed to get the F.N down to Browns Bay for a WoF in readiness for January’s events. We were paid another visit by the Taggers who again decorated the side of the Restoration shed, before we had completed installing the security cameras. Thanks to Brian and Dick Andrews for repainting it the following day. In December we need to have a working bee to do some partial painting of the outside of the clubrooms and a general tidy up of the grounds in readiness for the BBQ, and hosting of entrants on the Parliamentary Tour in January. Our Gymkhana/xmas function on the 18 th December will round off our branch events for this year. We hope to see you all there for some festive enjoyment. Paul.
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT NOVEMBER 2016 The November run was the Westie Run organized by our father and son team, Peter and Andrew Lloyd. 12 cars and 19 members were in attendance as I was up north with family. Some members went from the Glenfield Xmas parade and then to the club rooms. They all had lunch and then left on the Westie Run which was a visit to David Grace’s place where there were many military and unusual automotive treasures on show. By all accounts everyone enjoyed themselves. As an aside, just recently several of our members’ cars have been involved in the Christmas parade in Orewa. Whilst up north in Kaitaia I visited the far North Wheels of Mayhem event, held in the town centre showgrounds. This event had several swap meet stalls, and over 120 cars on display ranging from restored vintage vehicles through to some hi-tech hot rods. This coming month’s event is our annual Xmas dinner and gymkhana to be held on 18th December. Meet at the club rooms around 2.30 p.m. and a pot luck dinner will follow the fun event. Neil

PARLIAMENTARY TOUR DAY 1 BBQ AT NSVCC The 2017 Far North Parliamentary Centenary Tour kicks off with a BBQ at our clubrooms on Saturday 28 January. The Tour entrants are paying to attend the BBQ which is being hosted by our Branch. They are being advised that the grounds and clubroom will be open from 3.30pm, and that a welcome coffee, tea or juice and nibbles will be available in the clubroom. The Parts, Restoration and Storage Sheds will be open from 4.00pm, and they are invited to have a look around. Formal proceedings will start at 5.00pm with welcome and introductory speeches and distribution of rally packs. The meal will be progressively served from 5.45pm. It is anticipated that the function will close by 8.00pm. We need members to volunteer to assist with the following. If you can assist please see John Higham. MG halts assembly of cars in Great Britain At its peak in the late 1960s, the automobile assembly plant in Longbridge, Birmingham, England, employed an estimated 25,000 workers, building a range of vehicles sold under the British Leyland banner. Today the plant occupies less than half of its former 400 acres and employs roughly 500 workers (including those in research and development), but it still handles final assembly of certain MG automobiles for parent company Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). At least it did until last month: As The Mirror (via Just British) reports, SAIC has moved all automotive production back to China. According to MG Motor UK sales and marketing head, Matthey Cheyne, the move is a “necessary business decision… (that) will allow faster access to product and help to meet ever-increasing customer demand, all while maintaining the highest levels of production quality.” Roughly 25 manufacturing employees are expected to lose their jobs, though sales and marketing staff not deemed redundant by the move will remain at the site. The announcement is hardly the first time the Longbridge plant staff has received bad news. Then-parent BMW sold the Rover Group, and with it the Longbridge Plant, to the Phoenix Consortium in 2000, resulting in a management buyout and the formation of MG Rover Group. By 2005, MG Rover Group was out of money, forced to shutter the factory and fire an estimated 6,000 workers. Just 90 days after the closure, MG Rover Group and the Longbridge plant were purchased by Chinese automaker Nanjing. Nanjing itself was bought by SAIC in late 2007, and in 2008 the plant resumed final assembly of the MG TF roadster. In 2011, the plant began producing the MG 6, a variant of the Chinese Roewe 550 sedan, from semiknocked-down kits shipped from China. The MG 3 subcompact entered production in Longbridge in 2012, and plans were in place to build a new MG SUV (again from semiknocked-down kits) at the plant this year. The shuttering of the Longbridge assembly line ends nearly 92 years of MG manufacturing history in England. The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said, 'If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you both to the electric chair. --------------Honesty My Favorite Animal----- Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken. She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most. I told her, "Colonel Sanders." Guess where I am now.
A recent study found the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a Year. That means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud. ------A husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses from a heart attack! "Help me dear," she groans to her husband. The husband calls 999 on his mobile, talks for a few minutes, picks up his putter, and lines up his putt. His wife raises her head off the green and stares at him. "I'm dying here, and you're putting?" "Don't worry dear," says the husband calmly, "they found a doctor on the second hole, and he's coming to help you. "Well, how long will it take for him to get here?" she asks feebly. "No time at all," says her husband. "Everybody's already agreed to let him play through." ___________________________ A gushy reporter told Phil Mickelson, "You are spectacular; your name is synonymous with the game of golf. He found his ball and saw an opening between two trees he thought he could hit through. Taking out his 3-wood, he took a mighty swing. The ball hit a tree, bounced back, hit him in the forehead, and killed him. As he approached the gates of Heaven, St. Peter asked, "Are you a good golfer?" The man replied: "Got here in two, didn't I? ___________________________ The bride was escorted down the aisle. When she reached the altar, the groom was standing there with his golf bag and clubs at his side. She said: "What are your golf clubs doing here?" He looked her right in the eye and said, "This isn't going to take all day, is it?"

RALPH NADER He may never have owned or driven a car, but Ralph Nader has had an undisputed influence on the development of the automobile over the last 50 years, and it’s for that influence the Automotive Hall of Fame has selected the automotive safety advocate as a member of its class of 2016. Automotive safety had certainly been a topic of concern for some going back as far as Henry Ford’s decision to use safety glass in his cars with the transition to the Model A (as well as all the non-Ford manufacturers that adopted the much safer hydraulic brakes around the same time). A renewed interest in the Fifties led to the creation of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. But it was a then-unknown 31-year-old staff attorney from Connecticut named Ralph Nader who became the face of automotive safety and consumer protection in 1965 with the publication of “Unsafe at Any Speed: The Designed-In Dangers of the American Automobile.” As many have pointed out, the book itself probably wouldn’t have had much impact had not General Motors attempted to spy on and discredit Nader, an attempt that backfired when it later became public and General Motors was forced to pay Nader $425,000 in restitution. Nader’s subsequent testimony in front of Congress helped lead to the passage of legislation that created the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the latter of which charged with implementing safety standards on every new car sold in the United States. Ironically, while Nader’s book is most famous for its criticism of first-generation Chevrolet Corvair rear suspensions, the NHTSA undertook a two-year study of the Corvair at Nader’s urging and, in results released in 1972, found that the Corvair’s rear suspension didn’t substantially lead to a loss of control nor did the Corvair pose any more of a risk for rollover accidents than comparable compact cars. Nader, who went on to a career in consumer advocacy and has run for president five times, most recently opened the American Museum of Tort Law in Winsted, Connecticut, a museum that includes a Corvair prominently displayed at its heart. He did not return a request for comment for this story.
Cord brand slated for revival, possibly as early as next year 1937 Cord 812. Eighty years ago, the Cord epitomized the car of the future. Now, thanks in part to legislation intended to encourage low-volume replica car builders, the Cord may once again have a future as a production car. As announced late last month, Houston area oil industry consultant Craig Corbell started to lay plans for a Cord revival following the passage of the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act, which passed Congress last December as part of a $305 billion highway funding bill. “Until now it was cost prohibitive to manufacture these cars profitably,” Corbell said in a press release announcing the plans. “But now that expensive high speed crash testing, for example, is no longer required to manufacture low runs of replicas, this makes tremendous sense.” The Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act, initially introduced on its own in June 2015, permitted low-volume replica carbuilders to sell as many as 325 turnkey cars using EPA or CARB-certified current model year engines without going through the same certification and testing processes other car manufacturers must complete before selling new cars. Previously, replica car builders could only offer complete cars minus drivetrains or cars in kit form. Corbell, who also recently founded the Everyone Loves Kids Charity Challenge, bought the rights to the Cord trademark after the Pray family decided to auction off those rights in 2014. Those trademark rights, which Glenn Pray re-registered in 1963 after the marque’s liquidator let them lapse decades prior, sold for $242,000 and had at one time allowed Pray to build his own replica Cord: the Royalite-bodied Corvair-engined 8/10. Other Cord 810 and 812 replicas followed, including the rear-wheel drive SAMCO, an Eighties-era Oldsmobile Cutlass-based version of the SAMCO, and an Oldsmobile Toronado-engined version built by Southeastern Replicars. No specifics on the revival Cord have yet been released, and Corbell did not return calls for details. According to the announcement, Corbell is currently discussing partnerships with manufacturers and may have a display vehicle ready by the fall of 2017. “We want to get this right to uphold the honor that people like E.L. Cord and Gordon M. Buehrig brought to this brand,” Corbell said. To date, two other companies have announced plans to take advantage of the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act: The De Lorean Motor Company, also based in Texas, intends to offer revival DMC-12s; and the revived British carmaker AC intends to offer MkIV Cobras powered by a 6.2-liter GM LS V-8.
