50th TAIERI TOUR 4th -6th November Please ensure you get your entries in asap for catering purposes 50th CLUTHARALLY 12th November – at Balclutha

I haven’t much to report this month other than to thank all Rally organisers for the time and effort they are putting into the events they are running. Particular thanks to Kevin Mason for his continued enthusiasm for the monthly Thursday runs. Without you there would no runs for the members to enjoy. Should anyone wish to organise an event please don’t be shy, any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

The rally season is now upon us starting with the 50th Dunvegan Motor Cycle Rally, the 50th Taieri Tour and the Veteran and Commercial Run.

The branch also put a display in the Autospectacular on 10 September and by all accounts this year’s Autospectacular was a success.

On 18 September the PWV, P60 and P80 run was held, this year it was open to some other invited car clubs. The run finished at the Otago Aero Club, Mosgiel and was followed by a visit through the Rescue Helicopter Base. Even though the wind was cold from comments heard this was well received. A report can be found in the Roadrunner.

Entries for Dunvegan at the time of writing were around 40 45 and also approximately 40 have been received for the Taieri Tour. Most of the Taieri Tour entries received to date are from other branches, so can I ask that if you are planning on attending- you please send in an entry form as soon as possible. A great weekend to celebrate both the 50th Dunvegan and 50Th Taieri Tour has been planned early lodgement of entries helps the organisers when planning for meals, number of rally packs etc.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for upcoming events in the magazine plus Eleanor would welcome any contributions you may wish to forward for publication.

And finally in the words of Dale Carnegie: Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.

PWV / P60 / P80 Run –18th September

This year’s run was held on a clear but windy day. Starting at the Village Green we travelled across and around the Taieri from the top of Saddle Hill through to Brighton, Taieri Mouth and then to Waihola where some pulled over for a pit stop. Once back on the road we headed north towards Dunedin before turning off the highway to head to Berwick. From here it was through to Woodside and then an acute left onto SH87 heading towards Middlemarch. At Lee Stream School it was a right turn onto George King Memorial Drive to head back towards Mosgiel finishing at the Otago Aero Club.

After lunch and prizegiving the highlight of the day was a tour around the Otago Rescue Chopper base. Otago has a largest and busiest base in New Zealand due to our geographical area which is borne out by the fact that they had attended 13 callouts the day before we arrived. They have 4 helicopters in service and have recently taken delivery of the 5th which is still to be put into service. Of the 4 in service, one was in the shop being serviced after 800 flying hours, two were out on calls which left just one in the hanger plus the new one. As well as watching a presentation on the Otago Rescue Choppers we were also able to see inside the chopper to see the equipment that they travel with. The Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust looks after the funding for base. The majority of funds come from the government however there is still a large reliance on community funding to help cover the costs of equipment, staffing plus IFR (Instrument Flying Rules) routes. These routes allow the choppers to respond to missions that would otherwise be impossible due to low cloud or freezing conditions plus reduce the time it takes to get there. They prebuilt routes allow the crew to respond more frequently and with greater safety for both the crew and patients by flying using GPS on these prebuilt routes that are not available to other aircraft.

We had a great turnout of 25 vehicles on the day including 4 guests from the Rootes Group, TR Register and Classic Motoring Club who accepted our invitation to join us on the day. Part of the entry fee was used to donate $280 to the trust.

TAIERI 50 TOUR YEARS 4 to 6 November 2022

Kindly supported by

Newsletter Number 6

It’s building up!

Entry forms are out. If you have not seen or got one you will do soon. You have a choice from three routes depending, basically, on the age and ability of your car. Remember, the medium and long ones involve some hill work.

The interest from outside of Dunedin has been most encouraging. There is a large contingent from Canterbury organising a hub rally to meet with the Taieri. There is news of some from the South joining as well. We have indications of over 30 coming from other branches. The whole event is promising to be a great weekend for the VCC movement and the city so get yourselves organised.

Everyone should wear name badges and the cars, where possible, should have their Vehicle Identity Card. Many people put these in a drawer and then forget which one. Then there is a mad scramble to hunt them out when they need them. So start looking now and get set up.

Now all the groundwork is done and confirmed, we move into the next phase of organising. Those of you in Dunedin who are not intending to take part in the activities of the event but wish to be there we need to know who you are. We are getting the marshals for the field tests and time keeping together and with the numbers expected, we need many people for these activities. If you are in that category and can help, contact David (email at the top of this or 027 222 4751) and we will start getting these set up as well.

It is promising to be a good weekend. We encourage you all to come along. Travis

Newsletter Number 7

We are now getting to the details and the call goes out now for the help. Some points to make first.

There are no gravel or shingle roads on any of the three routes mapped out. If you encounter any it will be you have made a wrong turn or there is inevitable road works that were not there when we laid the courses out.

16
Otago
… continued

If you know an older VCC member who has given up the club due to advanced years or illness, consider bringing them with you on part of the journey. There is no need to register them, but we will need the payment if they are to come to the dinner. We would love to have them as without their involvement in the past we would not be here today. It will not be long before we will not have this opportunity to see them again. If there are some problems with payments talk to David or me.

Dunedin members, this one is for you. The numbers expected are getting big. This will bring problems with the field test and parking. If you are one who does not wish to take part in the activities and could help us out on the Saturday, please contact us. You will have a different rally pack, badge and car number. Our big fear is cancelling these if the numbers are too great. We do not want lines of old cars steaming water, heating oil and burning clutches because we are too slow. Help at the start as well please.

We would like some help from a few who could get a wee team together to do some decoration of the Dunedin Rugby Club rooms. Nothing grand. We just need some floral or static displays that we can use for photo backdrops etc. If you could organise a small team to do that for us it would be most appreciated. In addition, if any of you have photos from Taieri Tours Past, copies to put up on a board would be great.

Travis Newsletter Number 8

There is a lot in this and some new information.

A reminder of the Friday Night programme. The venue is The Dunedin Rugby Football Club on Moana Rua Road. There is a large carpark opposite but security is not our responsibility. This is all off Victoria Road that runs between St Kilda and St Clair Beaches. We open at 4.30pm. You will check in there and receive your rally pack and there will be a major briefing at 7pm SHARP. Everything in your Rally pack is yours to keep, even the number for your car.

On the Saturday, we start from the same place opening the clubrooms at 9am. While starting is flexible from around 1015am, please make sure you do check in with the starting marshals. That way we will know who has actually turned up and ensure you get there. Make sure your provided number is prominently displayed on your car. This is so timekeepers and marshals can see you on the road. There is an emergency number on the bottom of the Rally sheet. Bring your picnic gear and food, as lunch is not provided. However, the local Lions Club at Outram are going to have a sausage sizzle and the Grid Coffee Company will have a wagon there.

On Saturday night, please be seated for start by 5.30pm. The pre dinner entertainment will begin then and they will not wait. Remember, it is BYO but glasses will be on the tables.

On Sunday, if you have any dietary requirements please attend to this yourself. Bring your picnic chairs and gear. We will provide a basic BBQ only but not plates cups etc.

Travis, the Otago Committee and I hope you enjoy this event. Covid has been a real damper so let us get out and enjoy things.

Autospectacular Report 10 September 2022

On the Friday evening there were the usual queues of all kinds of vehicles waiting their turn to be able to park up on their allocated sites within the Edgar Centre. We heard reports of approximately 300 vehicles on display. Then there were also a few sales sites running.

On Saturday morning there was a constant queue of people waiting to come in to view the displays that were on offer. Also, the food stalls were struggling to keep up at times. Which is all a good sign.

Walking around the displays it was great to see many more of our members’ vehicles displayed in sites highlighting one make groups and also supporting some of the commercial sites. The theme this year was “What I did in Lockdown!”. I am sure many of you would have learned about the vehicles that had been bought and sold and are still undergoing restoration.

Thank you to our members - Graeme Duthie, Travis Michelle, Basil North, Bruce Murray and Bruce Christie who ensured their cars and bikes were available for display on our branch site. Thank you also to the team who ensured everything was in place and looking the part, and who manned the site during the day answering questions and meeting up with current and prospective members.

Congratulations to Bruce Christie who received an award for Best Motorcycle in the show. The look on his face when he learned this was priceless. Well done Bruce.

Here’s looking forward to next years’ show.

Club night – 26th August 2022

Our guest speaker at the August Club night was one of our“newer” members Dean Turner who is a Signwriter for DLB Signwriters in Fox Street. Dean started his presentation with showing the different brushes that are used for pin striping and then gave a demonstration on a wheel that have been previously prepared after which members had the opportunity to have a go at it themselves. Approx. 30 members attended and as you can see from the photos those who tried out the pin striping were having so much fun that they were reluctant to stop for the meeting. Thanks Dean we will need to take you up on the offer for a site visit.

Daffodil Day thank you from the Cancer Society

Hi Marion,

I just wanted to thank you and your wonderful members for volunteering their time and their beautiful cars to help us deliver the fresh daffodils last week. Daffodil Day was a huge success and it got off to a wonderful start with you and your team. Your commitment and dedication to the Cancer Society over the years is unsurpassed and allows us to continue the work that we do!

Please pass on my thanks to all your drivers and runners, I loved meeting them all and hearing about their gorgeous cars! I can’t wait to see you all again next year!

Snippet from Bill Veitch: TAHUNA STADIUM SPEEDWAY RIDERS BULLETIN NO 7. 12 . 12 . 49 MECHANICS.

Following enquiries from several riders re the reasonable duties of a mechanic, we list below the more routine checks after each race if the rider is being properly looked after.

Check FUEL quantity. CHECK oil. CHECK caps are tight on Petrol and Oil Make sure the rider has turned off the FUEL TAPS

Clean riders goggles Check chain tension and links

Check Air Cleaner. Check Carb Nuts, base and induction. Also float top and petrol leads. Check Compression of Motor.

Has the tyre moved ? Check if the tyre valve is on an angle

Keep the riders gear tidy and always move around the pits alert in action

Advise rider how many races before he goes on again

FIRST TIME ON THE TRACK. To get an idea of your capabilities and the ease of sliding the bend, stop at the end of the straight and start your run at the beginning of the bend. Do this several times.

FOOT FORWARD and keep it there right from the start. Good toecap is essential.

Tired Leg or Arms are a sign of lack of fitness. You know the answer there.

Strengthen up those muscles with practise and exercise. Blipping. Foremost thought at all times is Keep the Throttle Steady When On The Bend and don't start off by blipping the throttle on and off and doing a series of Pig Jumps, Blipping is tough on both chains and frames.
