Lytle’s Holden Premier on show at the Mangakino Lake Hop Saturday 8th July Club Night: Last Thursday of the Month (except December) at Whakatane Athletic Clubrooms, Short Street, Whakatane 7.00 pm Social get-together Branch Meeting starts at 7.30 pm Followed by Supper

Chairmans Report Winter motoring is sometimes a challenge and July has certainly proved this to be true. In July a small number of keen members made the trip over to the Mangakino Lake Hop event. I am sure the miserable weather here in the Eastern Bay of Plenty on Saturday morning kept most people at home warm by the fire, but it was good to see a few members turning on the wipers and demister fan and hitting the road all the same. Numbers at the event were certainly lower than normal but those who made the effort were rewarded with an excellent day of entertainment by the lake. The rain stayed away for most of the day and allowed us to enjoy a great display of interesting cars as well as plenty of action on the water with jet boats and hydroplanes putting on some spectacular displays. Finding my cars twin was amazing but for me the highlight of the event was two mad scientists that had built a home-made pulse jet and attached it to an old Austin chassis. That thing sounded amazing at full noise! James and I will be traveling to the national AGM in August and will be taking a keen interest in the discussions at the meeting. I am sure we will have plenty to report back to our members, especially on matters concerning the management structure of our club. During August our club will also host our annual Daffodil Rally in support of the Cancer Society. I am sure this event will be well supported by our members and with any luck the wider community will once again show plenty of support for our national day. Keep warm everyone and let’s look forward to spring!

Mangakino Lake Hop On Saturday 8 July Gail and I in the Capri headed off to the Mangakino Lake Hop in a wet dark morning, with Bevan some minutes behind us. We wondered if we were doing the right thing in such bad weather but a text to Lytle, convinced us it was okay at Mangakino, so we cruised on. By the time we got to the Lake Hop it had started raining there also, we parked the car and waited for the rain to stop but it didn’t, so what the hell we had our raincoats and hats. So off we went to view the vehicles, soon the rain stopped and out came the sun, what a great day to be at the Lake Hop. We wandered around the cars etc., not as many as usual but a great show all the same. th

We could hear the boats on the lake so went to see what was going on, just in time to see a couple of hydroplanes being dropped in the water by a crane. They gave some demo laps for our entertainment and they reckoned they were doing about 150km on the back straight. It was a great spectacle with the huge tail out the back and the musical sound of the V8 engines.

Boats being lifted into the water

Then there was the jet boat cruising along the lake front enticing people to take photo’s then did a 90 degree and drenched the lot, including Gail who got very wet but luckily still had her raincoat on. .5.

We saw a couple of people we knew and we caught up with Bevan, but didn’t see Lytle, we found his car in pride of place by the lake.

Lytle’s Holden Premier

On the way back to our car we viewed the cars in the car park and there were some very interesting cars to be seen there also, and there were the great bands there, playing the music we all like.

This very interesting 1965 Volvo We then headed off to the Whakamaru Dam Cafe for a late lunch before returning home. A great day out.

Rotorua Swapmeet Sunday 9th We woke to a fine day and decided to go to the Rotorua Swapmeet, we hadn’t been for a couple of years so we thought “it’s a nice day, let’s go”. It was fine until Tikitere, then it started to rain, it rained all the way to the Swapmeet, but once again we had our raincoats and gumboots and off we plodded through the mud, it didn’t stop raining (but only lightly) and we enjoyed the day. We met up with Phillip Cook from Gisborne who had bought some Ford Mudguards. Gail caught up with her cousin Garry, who she hadn’t seen for 3 or 4 years and we found Steve McCann drooling over a Ford Model A Pick-up (maybe his next project?)

We didn’t buy anything but it was good to catch up on people we know, some you only see at Swapmeet’s. Another good day, in fact it was a great weekend.

Mid-Week Club Run - Wednesday 12th July Mid-week Run this month, Harry and Gay decided we would go to a Cafe at Te Puke using the back roads.

We started at Matata, down the straight to Otamarakau Valley Road, then on to Hereford Park Road, then Johnson Road and right into Rotoehu Road and onto Old Coach Road until we reached Pongakawa where we stopped at the Hall for a re-group. Harry said we would be a bit early for lunch at Te Puke, so we set off on a tiki-tour to Maketu

where we had a pit stop and headed off to Te Puke for lunch. .9.

Interestingly Lesley McCann carried a duckling on her knee on the trip (it thinks Lesley is its mother).

She then locked it in Harry and Gay’s car at lunchtime so that no one would pinch it as the Landrover doesn’t lock. Anyway we got to the main street, looking for the Cafe but couldn’t find it, up and down asking people, who didn’t know, then some bright spark asked Harry what street number was it, off we went and found it, but it had a name change and now was a Fish and Chip Shop/Cafe, not a regular Cafe. You choose your fillet of fish out of the fridge cabinet and they cook it. Gail and I chose Kingfish “two fillets please”, they said “you will never eat all of this” each fillet was around 2 foot long so they cut one into 4 pieces for us and we still had to bring some home for dinner along with the huge amount of chips (one scoop) all for $28 as many others had to do also, a great fish shop and great value for money, well worth a stop if you are in Te Puke. As the fish shop didn’t have coffee, it was down the main street until we found a Cafe with coffee. Gisborne 50th Birthday Celebrations th

th

On the weekend of 14 – 16 July, Gisborne Branch celebrated their 50th Anniversary and they had invited our Branch attend, unfortunately only two cars from our Branch attended. Steve and Joy were able to travel over to Gisborne on the Friday, Gail and I (who have a 19 year old cat that needs regular medication and can only eat soft food) were able to travel over on the Saturday morning. The trip was slow because of damaged roads, pot holes and road works, but we arrived in time to have a bit of lunch with Steve and Joy and drop our gear off at the motel. Then off to Gisborne Clubrooms for the start of the Rally. The Rally consisted of a one and a half hour tour of Gisborne and district, showing us the historical places with an explanation of what was there and what is now using the site, or if the original area is still in use, what its current use is. Among other things we went past the Cemetery, which has been flooded and the water table is so high, there can be no burials until the water goes down, also a street of houses that may be uninhabitable. Gisborne has been hit so bad with the extreme weather, so sad. On a happier note, we all found our way back to the Clubrooms for afternoon tea and to answer some questions on the Run (you know Tony loves questions). Gail and I came 3rd in the questions, but as only 3 crews took part in the questions, I guess we actually came last. It was a great relaxing 50th Anniversary Rally. The Anniversary dinner was held at the RSA Forces Restaurant. As there were no winner’s or prizes’ for the Rally, the evening went on to celebrate Graeme Revell’s 50 year Service Badge, which was presented by Tony Bartlett as the Management Committee Representative. Graeme is a valued Member of the Gisborne Branch and is a very active Member and a great vehicle collector, having owned commercial vehicles as well as many cars etc. I think he started buying cars with his first pay packet as a Telegram Boy at the Gisborne Post Office. Graeme is a quiet unassuming person but once he opens up his story of life cars and the Vintage Car Club is a credit to him. On Sunday morning we went back to the Clubrooms for a great morning tea put on by the Club Members. We then headed for home, trying to avoid those dreaded pot holes. It was a very enjoyable weekend, with as always great hosts.
