Neville Davidson, Temuka, 58 Berkley—58 Mistral Welcome to our club . ——————————————When you are travelling and you would like to know what other clubs are doing for rallies go to National website www.vcc.org.nz You might be able to join in events in other areas ———————————————Of particular note were the welcome addition of a contingent from Nelson for the Mt Cook rally, amongst them the Mercers, ex SCVCC members who were enthusiastic members of our club when in our area. I also knew Ron Johnson and his wife ex Canterbury VCC who also shifted to Nelson from Nth Canterbury, these two both motored Model a Fords, (one a coupe and the other a roadster) but I won’t hold that against them! It was great to have the Nelson group participate, we hope they enjoyed the weekend.

Brian joined the South Canterbury Branch of The V.C.C in January 1960 and was always an enthusiastic and hardworking member of the Branch. He served as a Committee member, Chairman, Treasurer, and Branch Delegate for several years. He was Chief Marshall for the 1968 National Rally, and Chairman for the 1981 National Rally in Timaru. He held the office of National Speed Steward 1980 –1995,and was National Vice Club Captain 1986-1989, and was committee member and Publicity Officer for the 100 year of the Car Celebration held in 1985. Brian owned many different makes and models of cars and motorcycles including Ansaldo, Clement Bayard ,Bentley ,Model T, Reliant, A.C.Sociable, Chevrolet, M.G.Midget, and several motorcycles namely Triumph, Harley Davidson, and B.S.A. He was a great supporter of Mt Cook and all local rallies, night trials, garage raids and organised many functions for the Branch including the first all night rally. One of the first cars he restored and rallied with brother Barry was a vintage Model T, but his favourite was his 3 litre Bentley which he and his brother Barry rebuilt starting with four pistons. He rallied this car extensively and even took it to South Africa to take part in a Bentley rally. He took part in the Bluff to Whangarei Rally held to Commemorate the 100th year of the motor car, and also competed in a rally in Australia and was a regular entrant in many rallies throughout New Zealand using both the Bentley and his 1930 Chevrolet roadster. Brian moved to Christchurch in 1986 and joined the Canterbury Branch and was an active member and Chairman of the organising committee for the 2010 National South Island Easter hosted by Canterbury. Brian will be sadly missed by his many friends in the V.C.C.and we extend our condolences to his wife Gay, his sons Jeremy, Hamish and Tim and their wives and families and his brothers Barry and Donald. No ,the Austin’s 1936 Morris Tourer has not had wide wheels fitted, this is the result of a broken axle and the wheel shifting out at Tekapo. The car was trailered home leaving Bob and June stranded at Tekapo. Your editors were phoned to pick them up in the 59 Chev. Firstly Bob had to apologise for calling the Chev a “YANK TANK” otherwise he was walking home! He did admit though that it cruised nicely.

HARD LUCK STORIES of the weekend Were John Lester’s 1926 Dodge Tourer which “faded out” on route to the Hermitage with ignition problems. Try as they might the team of experts could not revive the engine so John had the indignity of being towed back to Twizel behind the 57 Dodge piloted by club captain Darren, which John said frightened the s—t out of him ! SC VCC Mt Cook Run 2017 Club Captains Report Another Mt Cook run has come and gone a very enjoyable weekend away with fellow car enthusiasts made possible with the help and guidance of devoted club members that make my job a lot easier. Special tanks to Nola Day for her administrative help, Wayne Irving with route planning etc, John Foster, John Campbell, Alister Day, Jim Geddes, Janet Campbell & Gavin & Marilyn Ladbrook for their help with field tests and other tasks that presented themselves over the weekend. I would also like to thank the participants for their support of the event. With 69 entrants this year enjoying the sights of the MacKenzie area I’m sure this number will continue to grow as it is a thoroughly enjoyable weekend rally away. Thanks again to all involved. MT COOK RALLY 2017
Our annual event made an impressive start from the clubrooms with 70 entrants, the largest for several years, entrants had time for a “catch up” over morning tea while awaiting their start times. The morning was cool with a cold southerly coming through just as we were all starting out with a skiff of rain while travelling up A “gaggle of Model A’s at Cave. One under through Taiko, Cave, repair! Burnetts road (past the Cave church) down onto Mona Vale road, up to Albury then through the backroads to the MacKenzie Pass then out Haldon Road to pick up on the main highway to Tekapo for lunch. This run was great, traversing a lot of areas not normally travelled and after Albury the weather was very pleasant. Tekapo to Twizel of course is on the main highway, traffic was not too busy and I noticed all our slower vehicles pulled well over where possible to let

traffic past, well done folks. What a great show the field tests made conducted on the green out front of Twizel on a beautiful morning, Darren Ladbrook and his team doing a very efficient job, this was another opportunity to check out all the entrants vehicles.

Lunch Stop at Tekapo On up to the 9 Hermitage for lunch with all our usual parking area in front of the hotel full and overflowing. Westerly showers coming off the mountains dampened things a little but not too bad with tourists as usual fascinated by the rally vehicles. Prizegiving on Sunday evening was well run and chaired by John Foster, an interesting and lively event enjoyed by all with just about all the recipients of awards being present. Many thanks to Club Captain Darren and his team for putting a most enjoyable Mt Cook rally weekend. —————————————————— STOP PRESS Mt Cook Rally Alan Averis' daughter Robyn Lee sent through this shot of the Overland, being 'pulled over' by the cops. 10 The 2017 Mt Cook rally was a milestone for Derek Brownie as he attended his 50th event I gather. The Brownie 1925 Buick Tourer was motored by Dallas Brownie and Derek was most impressed I’m sure by son Dallas taking out most of the trophies for the vintage section of the 2017 rally. Here the Buick is photographed on Waratah Road en route to the MacKenzie Pass.
