Chairman’s Report On the afternoon of Sunday 15th, a function was held to award 50 year badges and certificates to Howard Kingsford-Smith, Barry Ryan, Robert Grant and Lyall Bailey. The presentations were made by the National Secretary/Treasurer Michael Lavender. The ceremony was followed by a lovely afternoon tea. The rallying season has started again with the Vintage/Post Vintage rally being held on Saturday 14th. The next rally is the Commercial Rally to be held on 4th November, followed a week later by the Arrowtown Motorcycle Rally. We have applied to the Invercargill Licensing Trust for a grant to assist with the development of the carpark. Once the carpark has been completed we will be calling for volunteers to help with tidying up the remainder of the next door section, repairing and replacing fences etc. The Club bar is still running successfully, bringing in quite a lot of money to the Club coffers. However we only have one member with a Bar Managers certificate. This could lead to problems with keeping the bar operating. Anyone who has a Bar Managers licence and is willing to help, or anyone who may be interested in obtaining a licence, please contact me or a committee member. Thankyou.

Russell’s Ramblings Panel Beater Dallas Ryan has the bodywork well on the way on the Transport World’s 1936 CW Chrysler Airflow Limousine. They were fortunate to obtain front mudguards from the Chrysler Airflow Club in the USA and have purchased a 1936 Imperial Saloon as a donor car for parts. These cars are rare with only three in the USA and one in the Philippines. This vehicle will complement the Texaco Tanker with some body similarities. Ray McCulloch is giving the 1938 Ford V8 Coupe the full monty. The motor is running and the upholstery finished. It will be ready for the Club’s South Island Easter Rally next year. A 12/50 Alvis, OK Supreme, AJS Twin and the usual Model A motors are being reconditioned at his workshop. Members are welcome to look at a collection of motorcycle magazines from the ‘70s to copy articles on bikes if they wish. The 1928 Model K9 AJS that Steven Winteringham has was discovered some years ago by John Patterson dismantled at the Bluff tip. It was one of the last motors that Syd Ayling did up. It has been going and is ready for painting. The Motorcycle Mecca’s 1905 Minerva would be the most significant bike to Otago and Southland. It came from Milton and belonged to three generations of the Hancock family before being purchased in 2011 by the museum. The Minerva is single cylinder, 3½HP with Bosch magneto, belt drive with starting/assist pedals with a lift up lever to use the pedals as a belt rim brake. It has Chater Lea sprung front forks. It was finely engineered as with many early motorcycles. This bike competed in Southland Vintage Car Club events in the early ‘60s. Don’t forget to get your entry in for the Arrowtown M/C Rally. If you need an entry form contact Janet or Ray on (03) 217 9667. Entries close on 3rd November.

2011 Nissan Leaf at September Meeting Mark Zwies brought his 2011 Nissan Leaf to the September meeting. The Nissan Leaf was the first totally electric car produced by a major manufacturer. This car has an 80kW electric motor and has a battery capacity of 24kWhr and has a range of 100km at 100km/hr. 80kW is about the same power as a modern 1.5 litre petrol engine (Toyota Yaris 1.5l) and 24kWhr will run a 1 bar heater for 24 hours. The car is bigger than I expected (certainly bigger than our Yaris) and weighs about 1500kg, about typical for a car this size these days but heavier than a 1970 Chrysler Valiant.

Getting a bit more technical, the battery is a lithium-ion battery operating at about 450 volts. The electric motor is a 3 phase AC motor with a permanent magnet rotor (just a bigger version of what you would find in a brushless battery drill or a radio control car). Something is water cooled as there are two radiator caps under the bonnet and I suspect it is both motor and the controller/inverter that controls the power to the motor. Mark told us all about the car (and I got a few extra details). He uses this car to commute from Browns to Invercargill every day. The car cruises at 100 km/hr easily and has a range of about 100km when cruising at this speed, meaning the commute is within range so he only needs to charge the car once per day.

Dave Under the bonnet of the Leaf. Note the 12volt battery to run the electrical accessories and a radiator cap in the foreground. Doesn’t look that different but that is the motor controller you can see not the top of the motor.

Wednesday Run 4th October The morning wasn't too bad when 30 people in 14 cars met at the race course gates for the monthly run. We headed off down Racecourse Road before turning left onto State Highway 1. We then turned right onto Mill Road South. After driving around different streets in South Invercargill we went out onto Bluff Road and on to Greenhills before turning right to go to Omaui. We had a nice trip into and out of Omaui. Once back in town we drove over the Stead Street bridge to Otatara. Once there we drove around the streets and had a good look at some of the lovely homes. From there it was over the bridge and into Fosbender park where we partook of our picnic lunch. Unfortunately the cloud came over and the wind picked up cutting the afternoon short. Thank you Lindsey and Chris for a lovely day out.

2018 Easter Rally Our request on the Easter Rally entry form for both the driver and navigators age has caused some comment so I want to reassure you that it is only so that we know who our eldest and youngest drivers and navigators are. Suffice to say we cannot judge peoples age based on appearance alone. The rally routes may have a short stretch of good unsealed road on them if required to get competitors from one tar sealed road to another. If we do use any unsealed roads they will be in good condition. With a shortage of volunteers for marshalling the rally routes have had to be timed from start to finish so please pick your average speed accordingly. Your rally routes will get you out of town fairly quickly and motoring throughout Southland’s beautiful countryside so a sensible cruising speed with allowance for the need to read signposts should be what you are aiming for. We have arranged for the three rally routes to converge on the same destination for lunch so that you can catch up with family and friends over lunch. On one Easter Rally my Dad, his crew, and the lunch box ended up in Winchester for the lunch break while Mum and I on a different route ended up lunch-less in Waimate, with slim pickings at the only dairy and garage open. We are still looking for volunteer marshals so if you are able to assist please let me know, 021 388 649.

Vintage/Post Vintage Rally With rain forecast and after a scrumptious morning tea provided by Louisa and friends, 21 vehicles sallied forth on the Vintage/Post Vintage rally. After a short time trial we headed out through lush farmland on a highway lined with dead flax bushes arriving in Riverton as participants in the Riviera Touring Car Show. This was a grand display of 416 classic cars, some old, some more modern. Petrol head heaven. Some were sporting huge souped up engines, some original versions and some with absolutely glorious paint jobs. The winner’s prize of $200 petrol would not take these very far. We all found a car we used to own in the past, great memories. All of our vintage models made it safely back home, although one had to make a spark plug change to do so. Nice to see entrants from as far away as Riversdale and Cromwell. The sun had come out and a good day was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Ray and Janet for organizing an interesting event.

Teretonga Park 60th Anniversary Way back in November 1957, after all the hard work had been done, Teretonga Park held its first race meeting on the newly completed circuit. On Saturday 25th November 2017 we would like to celebrate the circuit opening by holding a Standing 1/4 mile in the morning, a BBQ lunch followed by a Flying 1/10 mile in the afternoon. After that we will have a good old tradition of years ago, a “Social Hour. Social Hours were held at Teretonga Park for many years on a Saturday night from 5pm. At this social hour (or two) light food will be available to celebrate 60 years of our track. Everyone who is, or has been a member, competitor or official is welcome to have a go at these events, except in current competition cars. All that is required is a car with a current WOF, helmet and overalls (the club has these if required). The cost for the day is $25 for all events (including lunch), or $15 per event. Extra people requiring BBQ lunch, $5. As Ladies made a huge contribution to the club, we welcome you all to have a go FREE to try and get bragging rights. Suggested format for the day is: 9.30am Registrations for Standing 1/4 10.15am Standing 1/4 Starts 12.00 BBQ lunch 12.45pm Registrations for Flying 1/10 1.15pm Flying 1/10 Starts 4pm Social Hour Starts Everyone is welcome.
