Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone As we get a slight glimpse of what summer is going to bring and the days are getting longer we must reflect on the year we have all had. We have all got very busy with life, many have been overseas on holiday and some are still overseas. As a committee we have been trying to provide events that suit all peoples taste. Last month our Hillclimb and PV rally as main events and the Motorcycle Run followed by the Wednesday Wander as other events. A big thank you to all who organised these Event/Runs. Thanks to club members who helped out with baking for Hill climb. In November we have our Veteran Run, Wednesday Wander and our large fundraiser—the Karapiro Swap Meet. Jeremy is looking for volunteers so please contact him if you can help.

On a personal note I have managed to get my 1955 Chev Bel Air registered following a long compliance process. Now all we need is time to drive it and enjoy the new acquisition. C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter I am writing this early as Jenny and I head away in the morning for three weeks in our Perth Camper Van. By the time you read this we will be back and we will have a Government! Committee this month has committed to upgrade our Clubrooms sound system and hopefully this will make a difference and by re-arranging our existing speakers, make it easier to hear at the back. Our old microphones operated on an illegal frequency so nearly all of our old equipment is redundant. Christmas is approaching fast and we have all our Club activities planned for the balance of the year. Kevin Sweeney is our November Club Night Speaker. Kevin is a mechanical genius and a great story teller so I suggest the time spent will be well worthwhile. Finally, thanks to all those who helped or participated in the Hill Climb. The weather spoilt our day and the event did not feel as good as it had in the past. If it was easy everyone would be doing it and motorsport events are getting harder to find each year. Don’t forget to take a risk. IAN

Motorcycle Club Captain
Last month we had our annual visit to the Auckland M/C show, this year 6 of us in two cars meet as Mercer for coffee then traveled to Auckland but we meet the traffic at stand still at Drury, so trip was somewhat SLOW from then on, now you know why we left A/k. We caught up with a few other club member at the show which this year had a lot more trades people exhibiting, which was a pity as this was I am sure was at the expense of some of the Classic Clubs, overall it was very good event. There was a lucky door prize of a new Royal Enfield but none of us had a ring to say we had winner it. Pity as an electrical start bike would good, but in saying that the old BSA is starting well these days, nearly 1st kick most times. We had our South Waikato Run on the 14th October which all went off very well, more on what took place in next the next Venture. Our next major M/C outing is to the Auckland Rally on the 18th of November, this year it is being based at Pokeno, which means good county roads, I have entry forms if any one wishes to go. P V Rally About thirty cars assembled at Okoroire Hot Springs for the start. Two cars had problems starting, a Buick and a Triumph. We set off and went through Te Poi and on to the Old Te Aroha Road. The scenery was great with the Wairere Falls and all the beautiful cherry trees in full bloom. From there we continued on to Te Aroha with a most interesting stop at Adrian Worsley’s Sculpture Gallery. He does the most amazing sculptures with any old iron etc. he can lay his hands on. In the gallery part was a most amazing life size horse and in the workshop he has started on a huge bullock. His storage area is like a maze of passages with anything and everything stored on shelves each side and over your head. Next was the straight line through the back streets of Te Aroha, then onto the roads around Tauhei and on to Morrinsville for lunch at the Craft Bar and Eatery in Canada Street. After lunch we went through Whitikahu to Tenfoot Road then on to Gordonton Road to the Gordonton School for an amazing afternoon tea and the prize giving. The school are fundraising for a camp for the senior children before they go to High School. Thank you David, Lukas, Jeremy and Barbara for a most memorable run. Gerald Enright

Please bring a picnic lunch for Friday as no food will be available at lunch stop. You may also wish to bring your togs as there will be a stop at Awakeri Hot Springs. Stay at Ohiwa Beach Holiday Park, Ohiwa Harbour Road, R D 2, Opotiki – Phone: 07-315-4741 -Friday and Saturday nights. Check out their website – www.ohiwaholidays.co.nz. Make your own arrangements as there are a variety of types of cabins and units, but these are limited SO BE IN QUICK. We have negotiated a 10% discount for VCC members, so be sure to mention this when booking. We suggest you telephone them, so that they can advise what is available. We will have a ‘Pot Luck’ dinner on Friday night, following ‘Happy Hour’. A small gas barbecue is available and cooking facilities. Make your own arrangements for breakfasts and lunches. Saturday night will be a buffet dinner at the Opotiki Golf Club - $30 a head – there will be a bar available as well. We have tried to avoid the main roads as much as possible, but there will be some crossings and the run through the Mamakus cannot be avoided . Saturday outing is dependent on weather and will be confirmed at a later date – maybe over a 48km stretch of metal road. Alternatives will be organised. There will be another shorter run on the Sunday, after which we will disperse to make our own way home, taking whichever route you choose. Speed Steward Training We presently have an offer from Tony Haycock (National Speed Steward) to assist with Training a few people to become an Official Speed Steward for Vintage Race meetings. Kairangi Hill Climb As I enter the Kairangi Valley all seemed quiet and calm. Day was just breaking and it seemed fine and still. I went about preparing the “Road Closure” so we could prepare the course . Over the next 15 mins more volunteers showed up . It was all hands on deck preparing the course , many of those present having done this setup many times before. The course was all ready , Fire Extinguishers and gloves at all Marshal positions, Ambulance with Medic present and all our Officials ready to go. 8.30 saw an early cuppa and some of the weight watchers baking—thank you Ladies. This was followed by the Track Marshall briefing , then by the Driver briefing. Just as the drivers prepared to go to their cars the rain started. Dam Dam!!! We closed the tracked and commenced the recognisance run for all Drivers, then it was time for everyone to put their best foot forward (or down). Track conditions were wet but there was good traction even in the wet. All cars completed 4 runs before the discussion was made to stop, out of concern for the Marshalls getting very cold on the course. Lunch was far more than a sausage in bread and a very welcomed warm cuppa. All having filled their tummy’s it was time to move on, thank you again to the Ladies and Men in the kitchen. Midas Gold Mk3 KIT003 In the early 1980s, in the UK, my late father-in-law, John Maclaren was contemplating building his third kit car. Hence the Midas’ NZ registration KIT003. John had already built an Austin Seven special and a Gilbern Invader. He was looking for a sporty car that would be practical for 30 mile commuting over twisting English country lanes while fitting a bicycle in the back. John was a keen triathlete and need to get to training sessions. In the end he settled on a Midas Gold Mk3 kit which consisted of a partly equipped fibreglass monocoque body shell plus a comprehensive instructions. Alternative approaches for build were available: from the factory supplying all parts, to the purchaser buying a donor car and then using components from that car as the basis for the build. Each purchaser chose a variant of the BMC A+ engine and gearbox. John initially chose a 1275 engine and sourced many mechanicals from a damaged nearly new Austin Metro. Some parts used in the kit build were dealer spares from other vehicles including TR7 tail lamps and Renault 14 rear view mirrors. An article in Motor showed the enthusiasm of the motoring press for the vehicle. They pointed out it was not a cheap car option: a fully built version costing more than a new Mini 1275GT. The vehicle was carefully designed by a team that included an ex-Lotus Formula 1 designer and Brabham formula 1 chief designer Gordon Murray who included a flat underfloor for a smooth undercar profile. The car flew through the German national testing authority’s certificate of conformity test including a head on impact test. In 1984 John collected the vehicle shell from the factory resting on bales of hay on a trailer. Although very short build times could be achieved, John took much longer, carefully installing each part having made sure each component was as good as it could be and was treated with specialised greases etc. The car was used as intended on a daily basis up to the mid-1990s. It was then overhauled with the engine blueprinted and a five speed gearbox installed. There are many refinements and upgrades applied to the car. The engine is Oselli 1400 fast road specification tuned to 90BHP with a very flat torque curve. It was the wedding car for John’s daughter Frances in 1996. Two of John’s children moved to New Zealand in the 1990’s and in time John and Anne chose to follow and settled in Cambridge. 18
John also chose to bring the Midas over and in 2010 it was approved for NZ road use after a period of preparation that involved John and then teenage grandson Matthew working on the vehicle. John saw the finished car on the road just before he died in 2012. The car was left to his grandson Matthew who has passed ownership to his parents, Barry and Helen Vaughan. In time it is intended the vehicle will pass back to Matthew. Barry and Helen are intending to move to Cambridge in the next year or so and to join in club events using the Midas. Barry Vaughan
