Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Well another month has escaped our grip. I am reminded that it is only 14 weeks till Xmas - what a scary thought. Daylight saving has started for another summer and the Elections have been with no obvious winner. There are plenty of events for members to get their teeth into from the Kairangi Hill Climb to the Swap meet or a Veteran Run . So get your “skates on”. Just make it happen ! Today saw 30 cars take part in our PV rally. A great run and it didn’t even rain. Well done to Dave, Jeremy and Team for a nice drive in the country to places most of us have never been. We had the pleasure of our Daughter (Sheree) and our Grandsons Jac and Zane on the Rally today. Hopefully I am planting a seed for the future of the club. A big thanks for the people who have decided to get their Venture by email this month as we know how slow the snail mail is getting even with their new Ecarts in Hamilton. You are creating a ground swell of members receiving electronically.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS CHATTER By the time you read this the election will be done. It looks like it is going to be a close contest so half the population will be happy and the other half not so happy. Nothing new in that! I personally will be pleased when it is over. Thank you Stan for getting together the run to Paeroa, I was surprised by the number and variety of cars there for the day. Last Club Night was special and it was a privilege to present those 25 and 35-year badges. There were a lot of lady recipients who we see a lot of and who support our Club so much. We had a lot of members present which helped make the night special. I will be away for the October meeting, traveling Western Australia in a campervan. As I write, entries are coming in for our Hillclimb and we have our fingers crossed for a fine day. I have asked Roy Riley and Anita to host a run - Sunday 29th October, it is a “Shark and Tatty” surprise run. Don and Colleen Roy are planning a run from the Club on the 5 th November after watching the Veterans depart on their rally. Peter Taylor has assembled a posse to plan our December Weekend away- 1st, 2nd, 3rd so easy to remember and the Opotiki and the Motu Road are in the mix. See you there.

S e c r e ta r y Assisi Home visit Firstly, thank you to those who helped make the visit to the Assisi Home such a success. This was really confirmed by the enthusiasm and joy of the men and women, some who came out with their walkers or in wheelchairs, to enjoy the cars and choose which vehicle they wanted to have a ride in. It may have taken a while to get them manoeuvred into position, but once seated the smiles were a mile wide. An open-air ride was also an exhilarating change for the staff. A very worthwhile visit.

Motorcycle Club Captain
Our run last month to Ken McGeady’s home was attended by 14 people. As the weather in the morning was very wet most turned up in cars but as we were about to leave after lunch two bikes turned up as the rain had stopped, you can’t win!! We had a great visit and Ken showed us his very interesting collection of Triumph bikes, some of which were very unusual in that not many had been made. He had searched the world for info and parts and it was fascinating hear some his stories and how parts and photos started turning up, Ken love this type of bike a bit different from the ordinary run of the mill. We also saw his full collection of Fun Ho Toys of which we only saw a small selection when he came to speak to us at one of our club nights and he has many other collectable items, in the toys range. I have been sending out entre forms by email for our next run on Saturday the 14th of October, but have had a few problems with my computer, so if you did not receive one and would like to come along please email me paspiller@xtra.co.nz and I will send you one. Assisi Home visit Jan's run out to Assisi Country Retirement Village may have cast a new light on the future of the Vintage Car Club. Of the people at the Village more Ladies than Men came out to view the cars. Ladies were interested in the vintage vehicles while the men concentrated on the 1950/60’s vehicles. Men requested that the bonnets be raised to view what was there. Time to go for a run down the road and back . Men packed out the 50’s vehicles while Ladies the Vintages. The day was enjoyed by all thanks to Jan for her efforts and may she get over a friends reaction when she told her she was going to check out a Retirement Village. Barrie Grant

Saturday night will be a buffet dinner at the Opotiki Golf Club - $30 a head – there will be a bar available as well. We have tried to avoid the main roads as much as possible, but there will be some crossings and the run through the Mamakus cannot be avoided . Saturday outing is dependent on weather and will be confirmed at a later date – maybe over a 48km stretch of metal road. Alternatives will be organised. There will be another shorter run on the Sunday, after which we will disperse to make our own way home, taking whicheverroute you choose. LETTER TO THE EDITOR DEAR SIR, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Judith and Georgia Van den Broek to thank the many fellow club members who attended the service to celebrate Snow’s life which was tragically cut short as a result of a car accident. It was a lovely celebration of Snow’s life and thanks to Graeme McKenzie Snow’s much loved Model “T” was at the service. Snow was a dedicated club member and will be sorely missed by many. Once again, on behalf of the family A BIG THANK-YOU for giving Snow such a great send off. Regards Graham Pate.

Passing Lane It is with considerable sadness that we have farewelled two of our valued Waikato Branch members, Snow van den Broek and Kelvern Spence. On behalf of the Committee and the membership of the Waikato Branch of the Vintage Car Club, we extend our most sincere condolences to Snow and Kelvern’s families. They will be very sadly missed, and we are very grateful for their past involvement in the Branch’s activities.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL DAY What am I talking about? The inaugural Classic Car Parade up Hamilton’s Victoria Street of course. So how did the Waikato Veteran and Vintage Car Club become a main contributor to this event? I suppose it’s called “networking”. Ian (Patton) recently attended the unveiling of Danny Ryan’s Hispano Suiza at the Classics Museum. While there, he happened to be talking to Hamilton’s illustrious Mayor, Andrew King. Now the Mayor being an ex-car dealer loves cars and happened to mention to Ian that, “Hamilton needs a car event”. Ian instantly came back with, “have I got a car event for you.” One thing led to another and the idea of a car parade was born. Let’s wind back to a couple of National AGM’s ago. Gaynor (Terrill) was given the responsibility to head a committee to come up with options that would promote the Vintage Car movement. One of the options was a national open day. March of this year our club received an email from “Head Office Christchurch” informing all that every VCC club in New Zealand on the 27th August 2017 would be invited to do something with their club that would not only promote their club but also benefit a good cause, which became The Cancer Society. Our first meeting was with Tracy Wood at the Hamilton City Council. Tracy is the council’s events co-ordinator in charge of, you guessed it, events!! It was pointed out very early by Tracy that Tom Andrews (owner of the Classics Museum) had also mentioned to the Mayor about a car parade for Hamilton a little bit earlier than Ian and to do the right thing he basically had first digs at the way it would be directed. We came out of the meeting with a basic route plan such as where the cars would gather, the time of the day etc. By the time the meeting concluded it was decided that all parties involved would have a meeting at the Classics Museum in the very near future. Ian and I along with Tracy from the council, Tom and his assistant (Toni) all gathered around the table at the Museum. The first item on the agenda was choosing a name for the event. We obviously wanted the name to represent (somehow) the Daffodil Rally that the VCC had created for the National Day. After a lengthy discussion we all agreed on the Classics Car Parade. We came away from the meeting with the route going up Victoria St, turning into Mill St along to the Fraser St overbridge and right along Lincoln Rd to the round-about by the museum. I must point out that Tom was extremely generous in his offer to do radio and newspaper advertising along with emailing over 800 individuals that they had on their data base. The council said they would do all the traffic management, which in itself is a major. Tracy also said she would get the council art department to create a poster. The meeting was concluded with all parties happy. Meanwhile, I contacted our web page man (Murray) and the club web page was altered to accept entries. It has been mentioned, “what did the club got out of the whole event??” We got exposure. Every person that registered had to do it via our web page, which in itself was exposure. Sure we could have handed out brochures and had the club gazeebo set up at the Museum. Maybe next year, it was the inaugural event so to a certain extent it was softly, softly. Talking of our web page, we have been into the back of our web page and the majority of individuals that registered also scrolled other pages of our website (other than the entry page), which is a good thing 14
In time an email arrived from the council with an attachment which was the Classic Car Parade Poster, excellent!! Another meeting at the Museum was arranged. Presented at the meeting was a map with the route of the parade in highlight pen. What!! Aren’t we going down Mill St to the Fraser St Bridge? A new route had been produced that showed us going up Victoria St turning into Maeroa Rd, along Maeroa Rd to Norton Rd, turning right into Norton and under the railway overbridge to the roundabout and then to the Museum. Hang on; this is not what we had discussed. After a lengthy discussion, Tracy said she would go back to traffic management and ask them why they changed it. Keep in mind the council have control of the traffic lights within Hamilton city but NOT on state highway one. Fraser St over bridge lights are on state highway one and cannot be controlled. I left the meeting and drove to the Fraser St lights and sat in the right lane turning into Lincoln St. Only four cars went through at any given light change. I presumed that was the main reason for the route change?? Meanwhile the entries were coming in via our web page. A little slow to begin with but towards the end we were getting 10 to 15 entries a day. The one thing we had no control over was the weather. I don’t think a day went by that Ian and I didn’t check the weather forecast. It looked bad, then it looked ok, then it looked good. The day before (Saturday) the forecast was, fine with occasional showers. We thought we could live with that. We had to, as we had no plan B. Sunday morning arrived with 155 entries having been registered through our web page. We were happy, a good controllable number for the first year. We arrive at Knox St at 8.20 thinking that we would be the first there. How wrong we were. Four cars were already lined up. The one thing that caught us unaware is when we were confronted with two rows of cones running the length of Knox St. The council had decided to only cut off half of Knox St so that the public could still use it. A slight panic set in, having only half the street meant we would run out of room for all the cars that had entered. Our concerns were abated when we were told by Chris (Traffic Security) that we had been given permission to use a 250 car carpark in Knox St if we required it (we eventually half-filled it). Dave (Nordell) arrived with cones and High Vis Vests etc etc. The entrants slowly arrived in dribs and drabs. A few of the ladies of the club were given the task of getting the $10 per car (a donation to the local branch of the Cancer Society) and tasked with giving the driver a “thank you” letter along with route instructions. A Daffodil Rally sticker (produced by the national body of the VCC) was stuck to the windscreen of each entrant to confirm they had entered and made a donation. By 11am we had well over a 155 cars all lined up. The weather was cloudy but fine. The first car away contained Tom Andrews and the Mayor. Slowly all cars proceeded up Victoria St, accompanied by waves from the public that line the street. I’ll take this opportunity to say a Big thanks to the Rotary Club members that carried Cancer Society buckers along the length of Victoria St, which allowed spectators to give donations also. The parade eventually turned left into Maeroa Rd. The intersection at Norton Rd was controlled by a council worker, so no problems there. I must admit we were a little concerned about the roundabout by the Museum. As it is state highway one and as mention earlier, cannot be controlled. But it was, (to a certain extent). One of the Police patrol cars slowly went round and round at the roundabout which allowed our cars to get through as it stopped (or slowed) state highway one cars from entering the roundabout from the North. 15
All cars arriving at the Classics Museum were lined up in tight rows. The weather was holding off, which was a blessing. The next couple of hours were made up of friends meeting friends, gathering for lunch at the café or using the free ticket to the Museum that Tom had generously donated to each driver. Meanwhile, in the background, the public were arriving in force. The Classics Museum was an extremely busy place for the next couple of hours. By 2.30 the drivers and their passengers had all but packed up, with a wave and a smile they drifted home. On reliving the event, was there any hiccups?? It took 45 minutes to get all the cars down Victoria St, which was acceptable. The Council road closures were not perfect and in some respect the parade was not a parade as the lights in Victoria Street were not controlled—we could improve on this next year? The other hiccup I heard of was that a couple of the drivers mislaid their instructions (or maybe never got them??). We had discussed this situation and never thought this would create a problem as we assumed it would be a “follow the leader” scenario. It was, until someone (without instructions) in the parade got a red light and lost the car in front, they didn’t know where to go from there. Problem solved. Next year, everyone that registers online will also get the route instructions. It was a great day. On talking to the Mayor, he is keen to see it become an annual event. If you missed the event, then I highly recommend you think “parade” when you see all the signage come out for Daffodil Day next year. So what was the dollar total of the Donations that would be going to the local branch of the Cancer Society? It was just short of $1900 (don’t hold me to it; I can’t remember the exact figure). Not bad for a Sunday morning eh, it can only get bigger and better from here on out. For the record a combined total of $38,000 was collected by all the Vintage Car Clubs across New Zealand. A grand effort. A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM HAWKES BAY BRANCH OF VCC TO EARLY VETERAN CARS (100 YEARS PLUS OLD)
Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for the 30th Anniversary of Art Deco Weekend from February 16th -18th 2018. We want to show the public what the earliest cars look like, how they perform and where it all started from. Our programme for 2018 has changed a bit as we have moved the annual rally from Saturday to Friday and plan to have a 3 or 4 hour run plus a picnic lunch at an historic Hawkes Bay homestead. There will be a special rally route for the early veterans (plotted by early veteran owners) to get you to the picnic on time. There will be a special prize draw ($250 of petrol vouchers) made from just the 100 year or older cars that enter and participate in the 2018 rally event. Come and join the other 200 plus club eligible vehicles we expect to enter the 2018 30th Anniversary Event. Hunua 100 Last year the organisers especially had the start point in South Auckland and it was disappointing to see only two Waikato Entrants. It was one of best Hunua 100’s I have been on, great vintage roads, easy to navigate and if you got off course you got back on course without even knowing you had gone wrong. If you don’t like competitive rallying just take the Touring option. Don’t complain if Aucklanders don’t support the Double 50 if you don’t support their Rally . Regular Hunua 100 Competator
